Black Friday Carly Style

Who wants to hit stores and make yourself crazy shopping these next few weeks? The economy is a mess, there is less money to spend, and shopping will be very thought out this year, for all of us. I hope you were able to put all that aside and enjoy Thanksgiving with someone you care about, friends, family or pets!

Because I’m grateful for the following things: my family; my dogs; my friends; and my readers;
one lucky person is going to have $100 to spend this holiday season.

I like to choose Amazon because it lets you buy books which we all love, or something else that you may want or need. I hope whoever wins, you’ll spend it on yourself but if it just helps ease the holiday crunch in general, I’ll be happy!

So tell me what you’re thankful for this day after Thanksgiving and I’ll randomly pick a winner and post on Sunday!

Note from Julie: While your out shopping for all your loved ones, don’t forget to pick up a little something for yourself…like a copy of Phantom’s Touch! Or, are you like me and would rather pull out your fingernails with pliers than shop on Black Friday? The bookstores shouldn’t be too busy…do a quick run and get yourself a copy of Phantom’s Touch for a little weekend reading! I’m thankful for all the Plotmonkey readers, who have been instrumental in keeping all of us in the book business. We’re all very thankful for you.

Warm wishes for a Happy Birthday go out to Plotmonkey pals Georganna Palmer, Catslady, and Kim H. today! We hope you have a fabulous, fun-filled day!

It’s That Time Again

Thursday, November 20th, 2008
Carly Icon

Trust me, nobody will know what I’m talking about, so I’ll just spell it out. I am already writing the LAST book of my LUCKY series. It doesn’t seem possible, but it’s true. And that means it is time for me to begin thinking about WHAT COMES NEXT.

Another series. Where do I begin? Do I center it around three women? Three men? One man, one woman? Brothers, sisters, both? Cousins? Friends?

In some ways this is the most fun part about writing, since its all about WHAT IF. Writers love the game, WHAT IF. It lets us play all possibilities and pick the ones that fit the best.

Except right now, I am blank. Blank is fine until the plotmonkeys go away on their January retreat. By then I want to know a general idea of SOMETHING so we can do the detailed plotting.

So I’m going to toss it out there. What do you like best about my books? What do you want to see from me next? The Lucky series was guy centric. The Hot Zone series was sister centric and also sports centric. Boardwalk and Summer Lovin’ were also sisters.

HELP! No I don’t want you to plot. Just tell me what you like best about my work, and maybe it’ll trigger an idea!

I’m Sorry

Thursday, November 13th, 2008
Carly Icon

Three little words. So why are they so hard to say? Sometimes, it’s hard because we don’t think we’re wrong. We don’t think they need to be said. We think they’re obvious; so why say the words? I think that “I’m Sorry” is so hard because it forces us to look inside ourselves and admit a few things:
~ we’re not always right
~ we’re not always perfect
~ we’re human
~ we’re fallible
And admitting these things about ourselves hurts. But you know the great thing about I’m Sorry? The way you feel afterwards. Relieved. Unburdened. Happier.

I recently had a reason to use these three words. It came after some huge introspection and guess what? It feels good.

Does the apology have to be accepted for you to feel better? I don’t know. But it I’m guessing that if you can look in the mirror and feel good about yourself, you’ve done something right for yourself.

What’s the purpose of today’s post? I’m not sure. I guess I’m feeling good and encouraging others to do the same.

Happy Thursday!

Saturday Guest Blogger: Michele Bardsley!

In my search for fun contemporaries in today’s paranormal flooded market, I found myself reaching for something I didn’t think I’d like to read. It was a paranormal but it was comedy. Romantic comedy. It was called I’M THE VAMPIRE, THAT’S WHY by Michele Bardsley. I laughed and I loved and I was hooked. Then (and Michele can correct me if I’m wrong, the memory went a long time ago) I did something that I do … not often but every once in awhile when a book strikes me as special - I wrote a note to the author. Or I posted on her blog. I can’t remember, LOL. Michele wrote back and next thing I knew, I was reading an ARC of the second Broken Heart book. Michele is one of those ultra talented ladies who makes you wonder just how they do it. Her Broken Heart Vampire books are special. They bring you into a new world, but it’s a contemporary world … and yet it’s not. You’ll have to read it to see what I mean - and I highly recommend you RUN not walk to the store, or get that finger clicking online to pick up one of Michele’s books to see what I mean.

I’ve read Michele’s blog and I am floored by the insight. I hope you will be too. She’s great! And she’s in the jungle, so please make her feel welcome! Just don’t throw any bananas!

Five Ways to Stay Inspired to Write
By Michele Bardsley

When I started writing with the intention of being a published author, I read books, I joined organizations, I took classes, and I went to a weekly critique group. I did it all. I wanted to learn everything I could about writing and I somehow hoped that I would discover some magic or secret way to get published.

I found myself following advice that didn’t fit me or my personality or my habits. I found myself trying to find the Way of the Published Author through the methods that had worked for other writers. And I failed to use those tools effectively. We all know that the truth about publishing. The only way to get there is to write and to submit and to never give up.

How you choose to bring your dream into reality … how you choose to write, to submit, and to stay inspired, is up to you. Trust yourself. Sometimes, it’s difficult to hear the inner voice. We let everything and everyone outside of us influence our decisions because we fear we’re making the wrong choices.

Sophocles said, “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.” I interpret that as we should always be a blank slate. We should always be open to learning and to new ideas and to be unafraid to question established ways of doing things. Just because it’s right for someone else, doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Most writers say they write because they have stories to tell and they want to share these stories with readers. This may be true, but it is not the only truth. Most writers write because they are intimately connected with the process of creating and expressing through the written word.

When we admit, “This is what I want,” we have to prepare for two things. First, we have to work toward that goal. As my grandma used to say, “If you pray for potatoes, you better grab a hoe.” Second, we have to accept that how that desire is achieved may not fall within our current expectations.

Benjamin Franklin said, “Never confuse motion with action.” We all tend to hang on to things, material and emotional. We all have our “thin” jeans hanging in the closet. Oh, one day I’m going to fit into those jeans again. No, you’re not. Let the jeans go. Buy beautiful, comfortable clothes that fit you and get rid of those “thin” jeans. They are the past. They are the reminder of things you did and of who you were. Those thin jeans are not you anymore. They are a connection to a place you have traveled to and passed through and aren’t going to return.

In your mind, there is a closet and there are a lot of thin jeans hanging in there. You gotta give up the thin jeans so that you can you make room for new clothes. And you gotta give up those thoughts, expectations, and old goals so you can make room for the new thoughts and new goals. It’s okay to stop wanting something. It’s okay to say, “You know what? I’m never gonna do that.” It’s okay to let go.

I don’t believe confusion exists. I think we cloud our minds with pros and cons and guilt and worry because we don’t want to make hard decisions. I have found in my own experience that any time I claimed “confusion” about a decision, it was only because I knew the choice I had to make and I didn’t want to make it. Only it’s not confusion. It’s fear.

In Lessons of Love, Melanie Beattie wrote, “Change is constant. But change wrought by some moments, is more profound than others. Sometimes we turn a corner. Sometimes we’re pushed off a cliff.”

We hate change. Change is uncomfortable, sometimes difficult, nearly always unwelcome. We need the jolt out of our complacency so that we can progress in life and in writing. We cannot escape that life carries sorrow and pain and terrible, terrible things.

Epicurus was a Greek philosopher born in 342 BCE, about seven years after Artistotle died. His core belief was that people should be happy. He thought that the way to achieve lifelong happiness was to avoid pain and he said we should do that by living simply, limiting our desires, banishing fear about death, and not worrying about what the gods think. In a way, I think many of us are Epicureans.

Recognizing and actively appreciating the blessings and the people in your life inspires you. Commit to starting your day by acknowledging the positive aspects of your life—write down one “blessing” every morning or search out a daily affirmation. When you get frustrated, depressed, or angry, write a gratitude list. There’s nothing like counting your blessings to find that moment of clarity.

Daily, we receive messages from the media and society and businesses that we must have more, better, bigger. If we only have more then we will be fulfilled. The truth is that we are failing to enjoy the quality of every experience. More will not bring us enlightenment or fulfillment.

What we must learn to do is savor the moment, be mindful of the present, and learn satisfaction is about quality, not quantity. Even if we could do this two or three times, or heck once a day, we might feel less stressed and more joyful.

Sometimes, it’s difficult to hear the inner voice. We let everything and everyone outside of us influence our decisions because we fear we’re making the wrong choices. Sometimes, you gotta make a leap of faith … you may fall or you may fly, but you’ll never know until you jump.

The following steps can be done as journaling exercises. The goal is to help you figure out how you can stay inspired to reach your writing dreams.

1. Admit what writing means to you.
Albert Einstein said, “The tragedy of life is what dies in the hearts and souls of people while they live.” Take a few minutes to explore what writing means to you.

2. Determine what you want to achieve as a writer.
Write down one thing that you want from your writing or from yourself as a writer. It can be big or small, general or specific, fantastic or realistic. Remember, nothing is set in stone. What you decide now is what you need or want at this moment.

3. Let go of the conditions attached to your desire.
Write about your fixated hopes, write about letting those fears go, and how it feels to let go of your expectations.

4. Set two goals to accomplish in the next 30 days.
Write down at least two actions you can take in the next month that will help you toward your writing goal.

5. Rearrange, delegate, or let go.
Write down at least three tasks that you’re willing to give up or to change for your writing.

Daily Inspiration

To bring daily inspiration in your writing and in your life, I encourage you to take seven minutes in the morning to do the following exercises. I know you can find a way to squeeze seven minutes into your morning routine to open your heart and mind to living an inspired day. And you can certainly spend as much time as you want on each task if you have more than seven minutes to devote to these exercises.

1. Meditate/breathe for two minutes.

2. Free write or journal for two minutes.

3. Take two minutes to answer the following questions:
Today, the one thing I want to accomplish is ______.
Today, I will not fear ______.
Today, I am grateful for ______.
Today, I will write ______ number of pages.

4. Spend one minute visualizing white light and love surrounding you, supporting you, opening your mind and heart to the experiences that await you.

Old Friends

Admission - I kinda left high school and never looked back. I guess college happened and then the rest of my life! And then I joined FACEBOOK, the social networking sight. I joined as Carly Phillips as a means of book/name brand recognition. Most of my friends were authors and readers. I built up friends quickly.

And then a funny thing happened. Some old high school friends found me. I’m not sure how since I’m listed as Carly Phillips, a pseudonym. It was fun to reconnect. And then some more friends found me. It reached the point where I now regret doing a Carly Phillips Facebook because I have over 1,000 friends there and it’s hard to sort through for people who know ME from days gone by! So now from a person who left and never looked back, I bought a scanner and I scanned pics from 1979 to share with these old friends! Of course one of them started it!

So I was wondering, as you got older, did you embrace your past or sort of run from it? Because I have to tell you, it’s been fun looking over my shoulder again!

The NonBlog Blog

I definitely have a lot to say and I’m too exhausted and too tired to say it. My mother in law is in the hospital; my daughter has had an ongoing migraine; I’m revising my heroine’s personality and keep getting interrupted by life; I loved Janelle’s cat post and all of your replies! : The new icons are fantastic! My Halloween party was cancelled and we already bought the costumes and costumes are nonrefundable! But I’m picking up my new car tomorrow and I am NOT looking forward to my dogs barking from their crates on Halloween every time the doorbell rings!

I think you get my gist.. Good things, bad things, all add up to BUSY things! I’m sorry, no good blog for today. Instead, I will leave you with a joke.

He Said, I Said

He said to me . . . I don’t know why you wear a bra; you’ve got nothing to put in it.
I said to him . . . You wear pants don’t you?

He said to me . . ….. Shall we try swapping positions tonight?
She said . That’s a good idea - you stand by the ironing board while I sit on the sofa and fart!

He said to me. … What have you been doing with all the grocery money I gave you?
I said to him . ….Turn sideways and look in the mirror!

He said to me. ….. Why don’t women blink during foreplay?
I said to him .. . They don’t have time

He said to me. . How many men does it take to change a roll of toilet paper?
I said to him .. . We don’t know; it has never happened.

He said to me. . Why is it difficult to find men who are sensitive, caring and Good- looking?
I said to him .. . They already have boyfriends.

I said…What do you call a woman who knows where her husband is every night?
He said. . . A widow.

He said to me . .. . Why are married women heavier than single women?
I said to him . . . Single women come home, see what’s in the fridge and go to bed. Married women come home, see what’s in bed and go to the fridge.

FORGIVE ME FOR NOT POSTING A REAL/GOOD BLOG TODAY?

Ten Reasons Why Your Dog’s Haircut Costs More Than Yours

10. Your hairdresser doesn’t wash and clean your rear end.

9. You don’t go for 8 weeks without washing or brushing your hair.

8. Your hairdresser doesn’t have to give you a sanitary trim.

7. Your hairdresser doesn’t have to clean your ears.

6. Your hairdresser doesn’t have to clean boogies from your eyes.

5. You sit still for your hairdresser.

4. Your haircut doesn’t include a manicure or pedicure.

3. Your hairdresser only washes and cuts the hair on your head.

2. You don’t bite or scratch your hairdresser.

And the Number 1 reason your dog’s haircut costs more than yours….

1. The likelihood of you pooping or peeing while your hair is being cut is extremely slim.

HAPPY SUNDAY!

Jungle Madness - Carly Style

Friday, October 24th, 2008
Carly Icon

The Plotmonkeys are all over the place, swapping days this month. Since Julie is in The Happiest Place on Earth (aka Disney World), I’m taking this Friday and she’s taking next Friday. So I thought to myself, what can I do that’s different? And then I realized, it’s still Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so I am going to introduce one lucky person to my favorite site on the Internet, Designergals.com

Every purchase here gives 5 % of the money to support Stage IV Breast Cancer patients via the Gal to Gal Foundation. Gal to Gal recently lost their President, Dorit Shapiro to this disease and you can read about Dorit and her letter here.

Even if you don’t win, I hope you can spare $ 5 to join the Gal to Gal Walk. Celebrities like Larry King and Gwyneth Paltrow already have. So have I. If you can’t, don’t worry, you can help for free, by going to The Breast Cancer Site and clicking. It’s that easy!

And NOW on to your prize for the day:
a $50 Gift Certificate to Design Her Gals where you can go in and create your own Design Her Gal (beware this is time consuming and FREE!) and then with your gift card, purchase stationary, labels, or whatever you choose. I LOVE this place! And I hope you will too.

Here’s the drill. Normally it’s just post to win, but I’m going to make you work for it. This month is also HALLOWEEN. My hubby and I are going to the same party we went to last year. Do you remember who we dressed up as last year? You can post that answer; OR you can guess who we’re dressing up as this year? The party is November 1 and I’ll blog about it the following Thursday. But I’ll let you know on Sunday who we’re going as. So for fun, who did hubby and I dress up as last year? And/or who are we dressing up as this year? (Hint: It wasn’t Carly’s idea or choice, she wanted hubby to be happy and I refuse to wear heavy plastic long sleeve clothing and sweat all evening. Hubby on the other hand, is going to spend the knight sweating in his costume).

Oh. You don’t have to guess correctly to win, but I thought it would make for some fun today!

See you Sunday!

… not just for kids! I am so excited that MADAGASCAR II is out November 7th.

Yes, I am like a child and I really want to see this movie! The good news is, my girls will go with me. My brother loves the Lemur King. I have a soft spot for the penguins:

Anyone else dying to see Madagascar? Who’s your favorite character?
