Special Guest Blogger: Vicki Lewis Thompson!
How many of you have been suffering without your SoapBox Queen fix this week with their server down? I know I have! So I asked Queen Vicki, who has a book out this month, to come over and guest blog on a topic I just adore! Thanks, Vicki, for joining us in the jungle today!
BREAKING UP WITH YOUR STYLIST IS HARD TO DO
Hey, Plot Monkeys and jungle dwellers! It’s great to be back, and thanks for inviting me!
I love writing fiction because I get to make stuff up. In my past lives I’ve been a high school English teacher and a journalist. Trust me, neither my principal nor my editor wanted me making stuff up.
Fast forward to today, where I’m not only making stuff up, I’m pretending there are witches, wizards, dragons, and a lake monster, all living in an Indiana town called Big Knob, a town I created OUT OF THIN AIR. I’m coaxing people to come visit a place that doesn’t exist except in my mind and the pages of the hex series. Miracle of miracles, they’re going along with it! Plug: WILD & HEXY is out now.
When I built Big Knob, I had to decide what a small town, Pop. 949, would have in it. The Bob and Weave Hair Salon went up immediately. Duh. Gotta have it. It’s a lot like the salon I left when I realized I’d never get a different hairstyle if I stayed with that stylist, and Lord knows you can’t switch stylists in a salon. It just isn’t done, or at least not by me, the super-sensitive one.
Leaving that stylist was traumatic. I couldn’t face her in person or even on the phone, but I couldn’t just drop her like I didn’t care. I mean, I knew all about her kid, her two marriages, her mother, her dog, for God’s sake. So I wrote her a letter. Who knows what she thought of that.
I created a new stylist relationship and got a new hairstyle, and for now, I like it. I’ve been with this stylist for eight years, and I was with the other one for fourteen. Breaking up with a stylist can be worse than breaking up with a boyfriend.
Recently my new-ish stylist gave me a scare. The salon called and said “Jill doesn’t work here anymore.” Just like that. Gone. Fortunately I have a mole in the salon who slipped me Jill’s new location, and next week I’ll be beating feet to that salon. I’m not ready to break up yet.
What are your hair issues? Do you have a long relationship with a stylist, or do you take whoever’s available to cut (and maybe color – yikes) your hair? Can you switch stylists in a salon and not feel guilty?

Welcome Vicki! I hope the server is up and running soon. I don’t always post, but I lurk often at Soapbox. Love it there.
I am so bad, but I go to the Hair Cuttery and take whoever’s available. I know I should pay the extra money and stay with one person, but when I get sick of my hair, I need it done NOW. I hate waiting. Right now I’m trying to grow it out, so I go in for a trim every 6-8 weeks. Fairly low maintenance. I don’t color my hair either (thank God I don’t have to. My mom is 65 and still has her brown hair. I’m hoping it’s hereditary).
You, my dear, look simply fabulous.
Comment by Stacy ~ — June 11, 2008 @ 6:20 am
Vicki, I’d road trip to Big Knob…if it was just real! I love it there.
Oh, the hair stylist thing is very tricky. For the longest time I went to my husband’s best friend’s wife. Tell me that wasn’t awkward when I decided I needed to change. But I knew I’d made the right move when the new person did my hair and another of my husband’s friend’s gut reaction was, “Wow. That took ten years off you.” I’m still with THAT stylist.
Comment by Jen — June 11, 2008 @ 7:22 am
Oy, also meant to say your hair is fabulous. It even looks good when you don’t blow dry it.
Comment by Jen — June 11, 2008 @ 7:25 am
Oh, tell me about, Vicki! When my stylist left his salon, he called all his clients, Jerry-Maguire style. It was hilarious!
Comment by Diana Peterfreund — June 11, 2008 @ 8:20 am
Welcome to the jungle, Vicki! Congrats on the book release too

I’ve had the same stylist for over twelve years. I let someone else touch me once (last year) in all that time and I regretted it, and had to fess up and beg her to take me back, LOL! But I never look the same, so hopefully I am not (too) dated! Just pathetic.
Comment by Carly — June 11, 2008 @ 8:24 am
When I married and moved here 10 years ago it was harder to find a new stylist than change drs.
Since I tend to keep my hair very short, I hate dealing with it, and there isn’t much I can do with it anyway, I have been happy with my stylist. She was the 3rd one I went to when I moved. In fact I have an appt today.
I can’t wait to read the new book. I love quirky towns, real or in someone else’s mind.
Did you all know that this is the 50th anniversary of velcro?? Just thought I would throw that random trivia in.
Comment by ev — June 11, 2008 @ 8:37 am
Welcome Vicki! I’ve had the same stylist since I was 13(almost 24 years). I drive 2 hours to my hometown and will do so until Margaret retires…which I’ve told her she can never do. My dad laughs that I plan my visits home around when I can get my hair colored, but he really isn’t off the mark. I always call Margaret first to get an appointment and then let my dad and grandmother know I’m coming for a visit.
Wild and Hexy is at the top of my TBR pile right after I finish Wild for Him! I love reading about all the adventures in Big Knob. I too would visit if it were real.
Comment by Liza — June 11, 2008 @ 8:54 am
Hey, everybody! Thanks, Julie, for letting me come over and get my blog fix. It seems the Soapbox Queens site is sort of up — my blog post went up, but I’ve only been able to comment once, and I think nobody else has been able to comment because I’m the only one so far. :monkee2: Ah, technology!
Stacy, I confess I used to cut my own hair. My mother used to cut hers, so I thought that was the thrifty way to go. It’s quite a trick, especially the back! Finally I faced the fact that my hair looked like
and I broke down and started going to the pros. I never looked back!
Jen, honey, you have hair to die for. Thick, with some wave to it. You need to treat that hair with the respect it deserves, always! I’m glad you worked up the courage to switch stylists, which couldn’t have been easy.
Comment by Vicki Lewis Thompson — June 11, 2008 @ 8:57 am
Diana, it gets to be high drama when stylists leave salons! Oh, and I just figured out that I used the wrong monkey icon for my previous post. She’s putting on mascara, not banging her head against the wall!
It’s still early in Arizona.
Carly, your hair always looks fabulous, so if the stylist is experimenting every month, she’s obviously a hair genius. Just give her her head, or your head, or your hair . . . whatever.
Comment by Vicki Lewis Thompson — June 11, 2008 @ 9:02 am
Hi Vicki,
I’ve followed my guy (my stylist) to two salons after getting that first wonderful haircut. He understands my hair, which few do. I think losing my stylist would be more traumatic than having my doctor retire.

Comment by Jeannie Watt — June 11, 2008 @ 9:03 am
Hey Vicki! PJ told me you be over hear today, so I just had to drop in and “chat”.
I’m getting ready to start WILD AND HEXY today. I loved my first visit to Big Knob with OVER HEXED, so I’m looking forward to going back.
Oh, hair stylists. A good stylist is as important as a good doctor! My dh was in the Navy for 21 years (just retired last year), so we moved around often. I constantly had to search for a reliable stylists, and fortunately for me, I always found one. Now we live in a relatively small town and if I ever left my stylist, I would, no doubt, run in to her around town. Horrors! Lucky for me, I love me stylist.
Comment by Gannon — June 11, 2008 @ 9:03 am
Ev, as a short hair person, myself, I get that whole issue. You don’t want to look like a peeled onion, so you have to make sure they don’t cut it too much, but then in two weeks it’s too long.
Velcro, huh? What did we ever do without it? I hope the inventors got tons of money for it.
Liza, I’ll bet that stylist loves you like a daughter, too!
for picking up a copy of Wild & Hexy. I appreciate it!
Comment by Vicki Lewis Thompson — June 11, 2008 @ 9:08 am
Jeannie, a stylist who understands your hair is pure gold! I hope he at least stays within a 50-mile radius.
Gannon!
I’ve only met you once, at Celebrate Romance, and your hair looked terrific all weekend. I think you’re safe to stay with that one, in my humble opinion! Have fun with Wild & Hexy!
Comment by Vicki Lewis Thompson — June 11, 2008 @ 9:15 am
Oh my gosh, my relationship with my hair stylist is almost after the one with my husband and family…very important! She changed salons twice until she bought her own place and I followed her to each one. We know each other’s life history and discuss just about everything. I find it very difficult to have someone else do my hair and when I am on vacation it is a big event for me to try someone new if I am gone for any length of time…major decision! Have someone else hi-lite my hair…don’t think I could handle that. If my hairdresser moves or retires before me I don’t know what I will do…can’t even imagine it happening.
Comment by Shari C — June 11, 2008 @ 9:28 am
Thanks, Vicki, for your compliment on my hair. Your hair always looked maahvelous, as well! One day, when I cut my hair short, I hope I can look as fab as you.

Vicki….
I SO need my SQ fix…augh…(I have one very sick oldest boy and can’t leave the house)….about hair…I only let my hair stylist from when I was growing up (her shop is 3 1/2 hours from my house, so not exactly convienent) color my hair…however, I just go to Great Clips for trims (I have a bob, so they can’t mess it up too much!).
Comment by katie — June 11, 2008 @ 9:40 am
Shari, I’m with you, girl! I’m following my stylist and just hoping she doesn’t move to Costa Rica! She went on vacation there and said she and her husband loved it so much they talked about moving. I may have to increase the size of my tips.
Thank you, Gannon! I owe it all to my clever stylist.
Comment by Vicki Lewis Thompson — June 11, 2008 @ 9:43 am
Katie! Yep, I’m afraid SBQs aren’t totally fixed yet. Sorry about your sick kiddo. Oh, coloring is another major thing.
Comment by Vicki Lewis Thompson — June 11, 2008 @ 9:46 am
Hi Vicki!
Sorry to hear you’re having server problems but nice to see you over here today. When I moved here 12 years ago it took me two tries to find a GYN but SIX to find a hair stylist! Fortunately, my hair grows like a weed so I didn’t have to endure the bad cuts for long. I finally found a terrific woman who owned her own shop and I loved the way she cut my hair. Four years later I wasn’t so crazy about the cuts anymore but didn’t want to face a new search. She scheduled a vacation at the same time I had an appt. scheduled and asked me if I would mind having another stylist in the shop cut my hair that one time. You can guess what’s coming. I LOVED the new stylist! Yikes! What to do? I couldn’t stand the thought of hurting her feelings so I’d wait until I knew she’d be booked up and then schedule an appt. with Stephen. “Oh, I’m sooo sorry. You didn’t have any openings so I scheduled with Stephen just this one time.” Yep, I’m officially a wimp. That went on for about a year until she closed the shop and moved to California. I’ve been with Stephen through 8 years and four shops and am a very happy customer. I’ve already told him he’s not allowed to move away and, if I move, I’m coming back every six weeks to see him!
By the way, I agree with the others. You have beautiful hair!

Hi, Vicki!
I hope the castle is up and running again soon. I’ve been with my hairstylist for over 20 years! She did my hair for my wedding. And now she cuts my son’s hair. I hope she never retires! You, by the way, always look great!
Comment by Robin — June 11, 2008 @ 10:21 am
Good Morning Plotmonkeys and Jungle Babes,
Hi Miss Thompson! So great to have you in the jungle today. You have great hair and you look fabulous.
I agree with PJ when I moved to Colorado in 1987 it was easier to find a Gynecologist than a stylist. And it took one disaster of a try before I found my doctor. And I’ve been going to him for 20 years now, he delivered my daughter….I go for my annual tomorrow morning. If anyone out there hasn’t been in to their doc in over a year, make an appointment today! Don’t take chances with your health!
My stylist is another story. I went through several including a few awful trips to Great Clips and Fantastic Sams. Aack! Then I found my stylist at Ulta. She has since left there and moved twice. I of course have moved with her. She is awesome. I’ve been with her about 12 years now.
I tried coloring my hair once back in high school–when the dinosaurs roamed–and it turned a lovely shade of deep forest green. I looked like a pine tree. Scary stuff. I won’t even go into the time I used Nair on my eyebrows–in high school as well–I’ll never live that one down. :giggle: Oh, the things we do in our youth.
If I went to another stylist I would feel terribly, terribly guilty. The place she is in now has two floors with a bunch of other stylists, massage therapists, nail people…so it might be easier to not be seen. But I’m a brutally honest person and I just couldn’t sneak around like that. I would probably just tell her that I really wanted a change in regard to my hair and talk to her about it. If she was against me making that change, I would tell her that I was sorry but it was time for me to move on. My stylist is really great when I tell her I want something different. We talk about it, look at some pictures and go from there.
I had an awful dream last night that Spike died…(shuddering) It was so real. In my dream I could remember what it felt like to hold him and stroke his paws….Sorry for the off topic. He’s laying on his pillow in my office now as I write this and I keep turning to look at him to make sure he’s there….
Anyway, have a great day all,
Cher

Hi Vicki! So glad to have you hear today….was lost without the castle
I have just found a new hairdresser, which was a little scary but she came very highly recommended, she does both of my sister’s hair and I was so glad I gave her a try!
I am LOVING
Wild & Hexy…it is so much fun!

I wait until the last moment to get my hair done. Then I need immediate attention. I use whatever stylist is available.
Comment by flip — June 11, 2008 @ 11:06 am
Oh, PJ, I so get your dilemma! How nice of your former stylist to close the shop and move so you could finally have Stephen to yourself.
Thanks on the hair compliment. I’m going to tell my stylist all about all these wonderful comments. Maybe then she won’t move to Costa Rica.
Hi, Robin! Your hair looks *wonderful* so
to your stylist.
Cher, hugs to you and your puppy. As for the *experiments* we try in our youth, I tried to bleach my own hair — wanted it to be the same color as it had been when I was five. Instead it was the same color it might be when I’m seventy-five. And like straw. I’m lucky it didn’t all fall out.
Comment by Vicki Lewis Thompson — June 11, 2008 @ 11:10 am
Morning, everyone! Sorry about the trouble at soapboxqueens. I think we’re slowly but surely getting sorted out.
Vicki, am reading Wild and Hexy now and LOVING it!
And you are absolutely right about the stylist. I stayed with my first guy 12 years. Loved him, had gone school with him. I went in for a perm, he let someone else roll my hair because he was too busy with a more important client and my hair broke off at the root, leaving little straight lines of stubble all over my scalp. Not good. I never went back. My new stylist is WONDERFUL. The first time I walked into his salon, he took one look at my hair and said, “That perm’s got to go.” Then he spent 2 hours working on it. The next time I walked in he said, “I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to make you beautiful today.” Well, hot damn! I like the idea that he’s thinking about making me look good.
Comment by Rhonda Nelson — June 11, 2008 @ 11:13 am
Too funny about bleaching your hair! :giggle:
I definitely learned my lesson. I do envy people who can go to the drug store, pick out a box of haircolor, use it and have their hair look great! I would have no clue which shade to choose.
Thanks for the hugs about Spike. Just an icky dream but I do hate those..
Cher
Comment by Cher — June 11, 2008 @ 11:15 am
Oh. My. God. Ms. Nelson, that is HORRIBLE what happened to your hair. How awful! I had some bad hair cuts before but never anything like that.
Comment by Cher — June 11, 2008 @ 11:18 am
I have had the same hair dresser for years. I am very particular about my hair and I won’t let just any person cut/color my hair.
Comment by Crystal B. — June 11, 2008 @ 11:25 am
I can honestly say I don’t care who does my hair. We visit the Mitchell’s school for hairstyling and since I usually just get a trim, maybe get an inch cut off, I think one time I got 6inches cut and 6mths before that I think I got like 8 or something cut(the amount needed for the wigs thing). Otherwise I don’t “do” anything to my hair. Sad to say. I was never into hair and stuff and still aren’t. I only keep it long because hubby loves it that way. Otherwise it’d be shorter than it is.
So sad, now I feel ungirly.

Welcome Viki! It’s exciting to have you here! I was over at the Soapbox stie yesterday morning and was sad to see it down for the moment. But it’s definitely better now that you’re hanging with us for the day!
And good morning Plotmonkeys and jungle chics! Looking to be a beautiful day here in Oklahoma.
Awesome topic today! I have to say that even living in a small town, I’ve never created any kind of special bond with my hairdresser. I usually see one in particular, but if she’s unavailable, I’ll definitely try to see someone else. I find that when I make a plan for something, I get impatient if it can’t be carried out soon. lol. So I don’t think twice about going to someone else. But I can definitely how a girl can get attached to her hair dresser. I mean, and tell me if I’m right ladies, that when you go to a hair dresser to get a color or cut, you’re putting yourself in that person’s hands and trusting them to make you look good. For me, when I sit in that chair, even for just a cut, I feel a little vulnerable because my hair is one of my vanities, I suppose. We all feel fabulous or horrible, after a haircut, am I right? That gives the hairdresser a lot of power over your emotions. So it’s all about finding the one that does the best job and makes you feel like a million bucks.

Great topic, Vicki! I’ve been with my stylist (who is also a neighbor, and
for over ten years. This month we’re moving to Oregon and me and my girls are already panicing about finding a new hair stylist that can do all three of us just the way we like our hair to be done. She’s so great with cut and color and keeping our styles “fresh”, and I’m gonna HATE the process of trying to find someone who is as good as she is!
I’m Godmother to her two German Sheperds :giggle
Katie — how is everything on the home front?
Cher — what an awful dream!!! I’m so glad that spike is okay.
Comment by Janelle Denison — June 11, 2008 @ 11:56 am
Crystal, I’m getting more particular every day! If you don’t have a good haircut (and a good color job if you’re adding that) then every time you get ready to go anywhere it’s a struggle.
Wendy, I sorta envy you that attitude about your hair, because it’s one less thing to stress about.
More time to live your life!
Alicia, you’re right! If a hairdresser makes you look awful, and it’s nearly impossible to tell until you’re done, then what? If you’re lucky, you can go somewhere else and have it fixed. Maybe. Or maybe not!
Janelle,
!! I heard you were moving to Oregon. Wow, what a change for all of you. Here’s what I’d do — get your hair done right before you leave and take pictures of what you look like (all three of you). Then you have that to show, because you won’t look the same a few weeks after the move, for various reasons. Like moving. :wallbash: I’d also look around whenever you’re out in public in the new town and if you see a good cut or color job, walk right up and ask where they get their hair done. Good luck on the salon search, and on your move, in general!

Hi Vicki, Welcome. I just finished reading WILD and HEXY and I can’t wait for the next big adventure in Big Knob.
I have been with my haridress for about 4 years. I found her by accident when my old haridresser ended up with surgery. She is wonderful and I would follow her any where.
My hair is in the official growing out stage. Yuk! I have my good days and bad days. I just wish you could put something on your hair so that you didn’t have to wait month after to month to get to your new and improved hairstyle.
Comment by Ardie — June 11, 2008 @ 12:47 pm
For the longest time I grew my hair out, but with the way my life is now, it’s too much bother to keep it long. so i keep it about chin length. The last time i got it cut super short, i remember the girl turned me around to face the mirror, and i swear my eyes must have popped out to the floor. it was the most terrible short cut i’d ever had! I have an inverted bob(long in front and very short in back) and i dont know how it got miscommunicated, even WITH showing her a picture, but she almost had me bald! my hair was shorter than yours vicki. And suffice it to say, it was NOT a good look for me! And the only way you can hide something that hideous is by wearing a lot of hats. I tell you I got strange looks at my job for two months until my hair was long enough to grow back for me to take it off. lol

Janelle…took oldest to the pediatrician (okay, can’t spell, been home too long) yesterday…she gave me an antibiotic for oldest…I had a bad feeling about it and oldest ended up
…I have a phone call into her to get a new antibiotic today…he’s missing field day today…he still won’t eat, but is drinking water (doctor is worried about dehydration, me too!). I am hoping new antibiotic will make him better….good news is that he screamed at me this morning “I HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL AND LEARN”. We ran into a couple of his teachers while my youngest (who is fine) was screaming at drop off and they miss him so much and talked to him a little, but are also worried about him..he is up and playing on the computer, but he did a little homework (Wednesday is family journal day, you know :giggle
….nothing like a boy with autism to know what day it is and what work you do on that day….
Middle boy is celebrating his birthday at school (he is a summer baby); hopefully youngest has stopped screaming at preschool.
That’s probably more than you needed to know…I am praying oldest will be back at school by Friday because middle boy has kindergarten graduation (I told middle boy’s teacher oldest may be sitting in the corner, since hubby will be out of town on Friday, I HAVE to be there!)

Janelle, also check with the newspaper in your new town and see if they have a “best of” reader’s poll each year. That’s how I finally ended up at the salon where I found my stylist.
Comment by PJ — June 11, 2008 @ 12:57 pm
I started going to my stylist when I was 13 yrs. old and have now been with him for 15 yrs. A few months ago, I decided that I really needed to find someone cheaper to cut my hair. I was nervous about using someone new but had heard good things about this woman and it would be a lot cheaper. About 4 weeks later, I went back to my regular stylist and decided that the money was well worth it. And I won’t be suprised if the prices have gone up when I go back. His wife just had their 5th child and the price goes up everytime they have another one.

Oh Katie, I hope your son stops
and goes back to school by Friday. It’s been a long week for you!
Comment by Tina Martinesi — June 11, 2008 @ 1:52 pm
Rhonda, how did I miss your post?
for the comment on Wild & Hexy! Good luck with your activities and workshop this weekend!
Ardie, I’m glad you had fun with the book! Yes, we should have something like SuperGro that we can sprinkle on our hair. If anybody invented it, it would be more popular than Velcro.
Alicia, I’m sure it wasn’t funny at the time, but I’m
picturing the parade of hats.
Hugs on the kiddos, Katie!
Claudia, I know exactly what you mean! You pay an arm and a leg for a haircut, and keep wondering if it’s too much . . . until you go to the cheaper place, and then you’ll pay whatever the good stylist charges. I hope they never figure out how dependent we are on them, or the prices will go up even more!

Hi, Vicki! I’m a sad case when it comes to hair–I basically pull it back in a ponytail almost all the time, and then every few years, I have it chopped off and start over again. There’s a stylist who lives near my parents that I go to if it happens to be convenient; otherwise, I’ll make do–my last haircut was from a talented friend of mine who trimmed my daughter’s hair and mine in one fell swoop. And Big Knob sounds like a fun place to visit!
Comment by Fedora — June 11, 2008 @ 2:32 pm
Vicki! So GREAT to have you here in the jungle today!

Honestly, I can only say GO to your hairdresser because I absolutely love your hair. It suits you perfectly and is so sexy and stylish.
I’m a non-stylist person. I get the occasional trim, otherwise, my hair is in a ponytail on top of my head. lol!
Thanks again for being here!
Katie: Sorry about your
kid woes. I’m thinking that after this week we might have to retire

I really don’t worry about my hair. My mom trims it when she doesn’t like the way it looks!
Comment by Susan — June 11, 2008 @ 4:01 pm
I don’t have a stylist. I have very long hair and a friend trims it for me.
I picked up Wild and Hexy last week.
Comment by Estella — June 11, 2008 @ 4:38 pm
I’m soooooo not a girly girl, so actually, I don’t care too much who does my hair. Why? Because I always make sure it’s long enough to be pulled up [or at least I try to make sure that's possible] - and just put my hair up.
For sure I don’t do my hair. First of all, I don’t care to. Next, I don’t have the time. Third, and possibly most importantly, I wouldn’t know what to do!
What I do, however, is grow my hair out, and donate it. So every year or so, I’ll get 12-16″ of hair cut off, at a *really* nice salon. You can ask for a certain level of stylist [someone who has X # of years of experience, and who has been to Y number of places to train). I generally trust them with my hair. Once while out of the country, I got a haircut, which will live in memory forever as being one of the most horrible experiences. I ended up with a puffy mullet thing... and oh it was bad. [I also had like 20" of hair cut off. Not good. I was actually glad I was going to be out of the country for 4 more weeks so I wouldn't have to see anyone I knew.]

I, too, am one of those who is rather low maintenance when it comes to hair care. I get it trimmed every few months or so. I don’t even own a hair dryer. My routine is that I wash it when I shower at night, brush it, sleep on it, and brush it in the morning. It’s been that way since middle school and it’s worked for the last 13 years.
Comment by Karin — June 11, 2008 @ 5:15 pm
Wow I don’t feel so alone now, with my ideas on hair.LOL I actually grew up with 5 cousins, all boys(one girl who was older and didn’t want to be around me until I was grown really) so I was the tomboy and never really got the clothes and hair thing.
I’m like others, usually my hair is in a ponytail. My son, 6, actually did a Mother’s Day book for school and when asked when he thought I looked the most beautiful, he said “when she wears her hair very very very long” Ie. not in the ponytail.LOL Hubby just laughed over it. But then he also said I was 80yrs old but only weighed 48lbs. Gotta love him.
This is a great post and really shows how different but the same we all are, huh?
I love the sound of these books btw Vicki. I haven’t had the pleasure to read them yet but will.
hugs,
WendyK

I see the non-salon crowd has arrived!! I envy you who can just let your hair do whatever and it looks fine. I never looked good in a ponytail, or long hair, for that matter. It doesn’t suit the shape of my face.
I’ve never met Fedora, but I’m sure she looks gorgeous without having to get fussy with her hair. I *have* met Leslie, oodles of times, and her hair always looks glamorous, whether it’s up or down. Leslie, it’s true. I have face and hair envy.
Susan, it’s nice to have a talented mom with a sharp pair of scissors!
Estella, how lucky that you don’t have to mess with your hair, and thank you for picking up a copy of Wild & Hexy!
limecello, that’s so cool that you donate your hair. I have a niece who does that, too. Great plan!
Karin and Wendy don’t spend long hours in a salon, either! Think of all the other things you can accomplish that way. And hugs backatcha, Wendy, for considering visiting Big Knob.

Welcome to the Jungle Vicki
OMG I hate my hair right I had gotten to where I liked it so I go for a haircut and my hairdreser did a number on me
so now I don’t know what to do because my sister in law also went to her a week later and she did the same thing to my sister in just kept chopping away even after my sister in law said something.
I did go to someone else a couple of times and she even sent me a letter saying call her so maybe I will go back to her, but on my conditions since it is my hair and I have to wear.

Wow, what a great day I’ve had here in the jungle talking about hair! Thank you again, Plot Monkeys and Jungle Babes, for inviting me here today and giving me such a warm welcome. Also thanks for the support while the Soapbox Queens recovered from that nasty Internet situation!
Have a great evening, everyone!

I love that fact that my hair is so short the only thing I do after I get out of the shower is finger style it. It’s dry in 5 minutes. Literally.
When it is this short all the body and wave is there and it just hides what little blonde, I mean gray, that I have. I can’t be bothered to color it. I earned every one of those blonde, I mean gray, hairs. Dang, I am color blind.
Daughter just got hers chopped right off, even shorter than mine. She had had it bleached in places so we can color it. Now it is bright purple and spiky. I love it. It looks so great on her I am jealous.

I can tell you from a stylist view that we couldn’t live without you the client. we also would like to break up with some clients lol but for the most part you are like a part of our family. When we moved to Florida 2 years ago I had to let go 13 years worth of clients. On the flip side after moving I had to find someone to do my hair since all my co workers were 3000 miles away I can be one of the pickiest clients since I know exactly what I want down to how to mix the color it took a long time to find someone who would listen to me. which would bring me to my last tip if you don’t feel like you are getting what you want start by telling the stylist we would like you to talk to us.

WOW! Talk about hair and look how many comments we get…wait it’s talk about hair with VICKI LEWIS THOMPSON…that’s the ticket!
Vicki, thanks again for blogging with us today. You and the Queens are welcome here anytime!
My stylist is one I’ve been with for over 10 years. He’s the kind of guy who would come to my house if I was sick or had a special event…he’s awesome. He does my hair, my mom, my SIL (who somehow gets the best cut, but I think she just has the best hair!) and my daughter. He’s never charged me for her since her first cut at 6 months…I tip well.
Before him, I went to this very handsome stylist… man, was he dreamy. I was there the day he got fired from one salon and I literally followed him in my car to a friends’ place where he did my hair! Great guy. Terrible allergies. I remember I stopped wearing perfume regularly because of him. Being in the salon killed him with all the chemicals. Had his own place for a while, then retired to do other things after his ex-wife took her half of the business in the divorce. Really sad. Talented guy. But he’s not my Roberto! Love him! Am seeing him tomorrow!

Hey, Vicki,
What a lovely treat to find you here today! It’s nice to know someone else has the same sytlist breakup issues that I have!
Okay, back to work for me. If I take another freelance gig like this one… shoot me!
