An Unscientific Poll
A few weeks ago, I went to a “Science Night” at my daughter’s school. Apparently, our school is a “science fair” school this year. I don’t know what that means exactly, except that apparently for the next school year, I am going to be caught up in the scientific method in ways I really never wanted to. I love science, but not this controlled experiment, actually have-to-be-accurate way.
But I was wondering something yesterday when I was asked about the readership we have on Plotmonkeys and I truly couldn’t answer. From the stats, I know that most of you come to the site now through bookmarks that lead you directly to our website or by typing in the www.plotmonkeys.com url. This wasn’t always the case. In the beginning, we got more hits through our links at other sites (the most popular then–and now–is www.carlyphillips.com–yeah, Carly!)
I know that 99% of our readers come in through US servers. We clearly have foreign readers because they post here, but they are in the minority, for whatever reason.
I know that most of you start hitting the blog around 9am and continue through 3pm, though we do have some serious early birds and night owls, like me.
I know that the number of people who come here has grown steadily over the last year. Saturdays, which we’ve recently dubbed “Craft Days” have increased our traffic on that day exponentially.
I know that all of you are the absolute best readers in the romancelandia universe.
I don’t need science to tell me that!
BUT…
Here’s what I don’t know…and what I’d like to know. This is all very useful information for writers and hell, I thought it would be fun to see the answers.

None, they are all 45 minutes to an hour away
HOW MANY DISCOUNT STORES (that sell books) ARE WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF YOU?
If I could count these guys, there are four, Price Chopper and Stop & Shop (both supermarkets) Walmart and Sears Essentials.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU USE ONLINE BOOKSELLERS?
I don’t use them that often, but this summer I started to use Amazon.com and thriftbooks.com so I could buy books written by you guys and Robyn Carr. I rarely use B&N or Borders…I prefer to go to the brick and mortar buildings for these guys.
WHERE DO YOU BUY MOST OF YOUR BOOKS?
I buy most of my books at Walmart.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU BUY BOOKS PER MONTH?
I buy books about 3 or 4 times a month…each time I go to the store I always come home with about 2 or 4 books…I buy them in even numbers.

It really is a small one but they are able to import books written by you, the plotmonkeys and that’s why I love this bookstore
Every time I walk through the door, they ask: “Let me guess. It’s a English book, isn’t it?” And with every English book I order they get faster and faster. Meanwhile, they only need two weeks till I get it. That’s the practice. Have to order more LOL.

Even though my TBR is huge, I’ll still buy a new book if it catches my eye or is by an author I like. I think it’s Carly that said it’s really important to an author to sell books those first couple of weeks of release, so I’ll buy then, even if I don’t have time to read it yet.

I’m also becoming a fan of booksonboard.com - eBooks are more logical for me because I hate to wait a week for a book and with an ebook I can buy it and immediately read it! YAY!

Hi again everyone…talking a computer break before I have to go and coach my basketball team…everyone’s answers were very interesting…I learned a couple of things…especially Leslie being accident prone…
go figure…didn’t know that one…after looking at everything..For the last questions, I think I should have answered I am originally from Jamaica West Indies…that is what makes me me…I am alot like some of the other jungle buddies, which is cool…in the States, grew up in Brooklyn NY and I drive near Carly’s area when I go back to visit my mom…I love Tennessee…used to visit for Christmas…gotta go…talk to you guys later…

So.. when I order books for our trip home I’m from NJ 
I’m going to mix up your survey.. I’m an expat from NJ living in Melbourne Australia.

Well. here in Australia… we have a ton of small independent book stores on the main street several kilometers from our house and a large Borders at the mall.
In NJ .. I’m sad they closed down our Waldenbooks that was less than 5 minutes away from our house. If you go within 20 minutes … there are over 5 large chain bookstores but no independents. Very sad.

In Australia.. I get my Mills & Boon (Harlequin) from Target down by the main street.
In NJ several.. Walmart & Target but when I was in NJ I would get my books from my Waldenbook store.

Since I’ve been in Australia once every 6 weeks. I refuse to pay the price of books in Australia and even with the postage it works out to be less to order from the States.

WHAT STATE DO YOU LIVE IN? New Jersey
HOW MANY BRICK & MORTAR BOOKSTORES (That’s an industry term for a bookstore like Walden’s, Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc.) ARE WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF YOU? About 20 minutes away is a Barnes and Noble. That’s the only bookstore around. The next bookstore, a Borders, is about 35 minutes away.
HOW MANY DISCOUNT STORES (that sell books) ARE WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF YOU? Target and Walmart are on the same highway as the B&N and Borders. So it’s about 20 minutes away. Nothing closer.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU USE ONLINE BOOKSELLERS? I buy from Amazon all the time. I love it.
WHERE DO YOU BUY MOST OF YOUR BOOKS? B&N and Amazon
HOW OFTEN DO YOU BUY BOOKS PER MONTH? 4 or 5 times a month

There’s nothing that sounds better to me then the idea of being given a huge wad of cash and being sent on a book shopping spree in B&N. I also would love to be locked in a bookstore over night and have the whole night to browse all the books, lay around in the big chairs, and drink cold coffee drinks.
