What’s in YOUR Bag?
Early Sunday morning I was indulging in one of my favorite pastimes: reading a fashion magazine. This was September 2007 ALLURE. I came across an article on another of my favorite things: handbags.
This study is from ALLURE Magazine readers:
52 - Percent never go out without a handbag
10 – is the number of handbags owned by the average American woman
3.4 - is the average weight in pounds of the contents of a handbag
10 – Percentage of body weight your handbag should not exceed
It all got me thinking … I am a purse addict. I need to refresh my bag every season with something new. I need to match color scheme which means basically I need a black and a brown. I change my purse based on day or night. And I never have enough handbags.
What’s IN my bag? Well, that’s another story. So I decided to share a few tidbits with you and encourage you to do the same:
Do you use a handbag every day? Yes
Do you remember your first handbag? If so, what was it? I do. A LeSportsac classic rust, double handled bag. The fact that I remember tells you something about my obsession. Boy do I remember this bag fondly although at the time, when I carried it to school, I felt awkward and out of place, embarrassed (like if I were wearing a skirt and didn’t call my friends to ask one of them to wear one too!)
Big purse or small purse? Luggage size. Just kidding. But big. Definitely.
Now for the key question. What’s in your bag? In other words, what can you not live without? I admit to being anal. Totally. There are certain things that if I don’t have them, anxiety kicks in. This despite the fact that I might never use it.
1. Wallet – no small French Purse for me. A long, envelope shaped wallet filled with credit cards, license, health insurance card, and change. In the change purse part are my frequently used cards like the supermarket, Borders, etc.
2. Leather envelope – contains extra frequent buyer cards, coupons, etc.
3. Tissues
4. Pill case – I take the Fifth on what’s in there. If you know me well, you can answer this anyway.
5. Makeup case – must contain lip gloss, lip liner, a lipstick, cover up, and a mirror
6. Extra lip gloss that I can just reach in and pull out of bag
7. Mini calendar – I have a huge calendar at home that keeps track of the whole family but this one is to make dr. appts, etc. I have to synchronize the two a few times a week.
8. A (hopefully) mini water bottle – to take said pills – I hate when I have to use the 8 or 9 oz. water bottles because they’re extra heavy.
9. Pen – maybe two.
10. Sunglass case – with sunglasses inside so I can swap my real glasses for sunglasses and visa versa and have a place to put them without scratching them.
11. Hair tie and hair clip – not always but usually have one or the other … just in case.
12. Nail file
13. Cell Phone
14. Paperback book (sometimes)
15. Bandaids
16. Lipton Decaf Teabags and Equal – because don’t you know not everyone has the Lipton or Equal brand?
17. Digital camera (sometimes)
18. iPod Nano
WEIGHT of my bag? I don’t want to know.
Clearly I don’t know how to pare down to the bare minimum. So what’s in YOUR bag? Inquiring minds want to know!

This is such a great blog for you, Carly, and you know I’m rolling on the floor laughing my butt off just reading this blog!
Whenever Carly and I get together, I’m always teasing her about her luggage sized purse, and she shudders at my “mini” size purse I carry! However, I do have to (sheepishly) admit that during this past RWA conference I of course took one of my small purses and had to stuff extra things in CARLY’S purse when we went out because it wouldn’t fit in mine! That goes to show you how big Carly’s purse really is — she had all the above in it (almost), and some of my stuff, too!
I used to be a one purse girl, meaning I carried one purse until it fell apart. Then I met Carly, who showed me the finer side of handbags, and I have to admit that now I have quite a few, and I do switch them out at least 2-3 times a year. My favorite purses are Brighton purses — love their designs, real leather, and they last forever if you take care of them.
Q: Do you use a handbag every day? Yep!
Q: Do you remember your first handbag? If so, what was it? Nope, I can’t even remember my first handbag — it was probably something from Wal-mart! :o
Q: Big purse or small purse? A regular sized purse for everyday. Small for when i travel.
As for what’s in my bag, I’m a “basics” kind of girl. I only take what I absolutely need. A regular sized wallet for cash, credit cards, and the like. It absolutely has to have a zip compartment for coins! 1 shade of lipstick that I use all the time (Unlike Julie and Carly, I don’t switch out shades of lipstick to what I’m wearing. It’s the same color for everything!), lip balm, (no other make-up — once I’m done in the morning putting on my make-up, that’s it!), tissues, car/house keys, cellphone, at least two pens, a very small vial of Advil, sunglasses, and that’s it!

The FUNNIEST story was the year Janelle bought a suede hot pink Coach purse and our editor at the DAllas RWA conference had us take the train to the restaurant and the skies opened up (not this past Dallas but the first Dallas RWA) and Janelle’s hot pink purse SUEDE got DRENCHED. She’s STILL crying about it.

LOL Carly!
My purse is actually a purse within a purse. I have a clutch that is magnetized so the two halves stick together and it’s real handy when I need to grab something. In this are my drivers license, credit card, ATM card, insurance card, grocery store cards, ulta beauty supply card, tip card because I can’t figure it out in my head, cash, change, my harp teacher’s business card so I have her phone number in case I need to call and tell her I’m going to be late getting to her house for my lesson that day, my husband’s business card, health insurance card, B&N card, any gift cards I might have received for birthday or Christmas etc.
In the larger bag which is really not very big sort of medium sized at the moment–I had this one with me at our lunch at national–I have my clutch purse, a pen, a mechanical pencil, sometimes my check book, lip gloss, tea bags usually Lady Grey and Splenda–I’m a tea drinker and they don’t always have what I like so… And that’s about it. Oh, I almost forgot, reading glasses. I have a pair in nearly every room in the house too including my car.
My shades live on the counter in the hall where my purse lives. I just grab them as I’m leaving and when I’m in a store or something and take them off I hook them over the front of my shirt/blouse or whatever. I don’t put them in my purse because there isn’t any room with my clutch in there.
I take some of my pills in the morning with my vitamins and other supplements and the rest at night before bed. So I don’t need to take meds with me. I have chewable Pepto, Tylenol, lipstick, Gas X, 2 bottles of hand sanitizer and gum in my car along with at least 30 CD’s.

Cher, you sound like a girl after my own heart. :love2: Tea bags (even if not my brand); splenda (even if not equal) and other things. Awesome.

I’m not a bag girl…BUT I do have a neighbor who gets great designer knock-offs and I’m crazy for those. I get more compliments on my “Chanel” purse than any other! Right now, my purse is the one I brought to National (that’s the last time I’ve changed it!) and it’s by Sears. :-) I did get a new Dolce & Gabbana knock-off. I know, I shouldn’t buy them. It’s wrong. But my purses go through hell and I can’t justify spending so much money on them for everyday use! Maybe if I’m going somewhere nice…
In my purse…I have my Mickey Mouse wallet (which sounds hokey, but you can’t really tell it’s Mickey unless you look carefully…it’s black with silver studs and matches my purse), my sunglass case, my cell phone, my checkbook and about three thousand receipts dating back to May, my Advil, Neosporin & Bandaids (I do have an active kid), at least three lipsticks, a lip pencil and a powder compact.
I don’t seem to keep anything interesting in my purse!
Comment by Julie Leto — August 20, 2007 @ 8:22 am
Carly: I had a navy LeSportsac purse. It must be our generation.
Last year, hubby got me a black Kate Spade ‘mini tote’ for a handbag (I asked for it). A departure from only Coaches. I decided to branch out. Anyway, I have a million lip glosses, wallet as big as yours (and I cleaned it out a couple of months ago!), cell, reciepts, mirror and various and sundry other stuff.

I love handbags! I love to look at all the handbags, on the rare occassions I go shopping. Why, I don’t know because…I have a total of 4, usually only swap out for special reasons (going on vacation I’ll use the palm tree one; racing I take my checkered flag one; formal events I use the small clutch). I’m always running late so I just don’t have time to swap out.
My everyday purse has a strap that can be unzipped and it turns into a backpack. Basic black leather and I’ve had it for yeeearrrs! I always have it with me because I ususally just leave it in the car (I live way out in the country and am way too trusting).
In it: my wallet, keys, wax for braces, pens, highlighter, chapstick, usually a book **btw - Julie, I loved Stripped!!!!** And that’s about it. My cell phone is on a clip on my waist and my glasses are on a strap around my neck. Oh, I do have a ton of receipts, too. Mostly because I always leave it in my car and so I don’t ever think to take them out.
Fun question. Hope everyone has a great start to the week!!!

Oh, I’m so not really a purse girl but would love to have such good taste!
I mostly carry purses/bags that are big enough to haul my stuff and the kids’ too (aka diaper/snack bags), so definitely NOT small. And I do carry one everywhere.
Can’t remember my first purse, although LeSportsacs were very popular then. A friend had a leather Roots purse that I remember admiring, too.
As for what’s inside–usually wallet, sunglasses (prescription–I’m blind and don’t do contacts), cell phone (unless it’s in my pocket), pocket calendar and pen, gum, granola bar, diaper, lip gloss, mints, Dramamine (from our latest vacation–haven’t gotten around to taking it back out yet), Bandaids, some crumpled tissues, and often a digital camera.

Do you use a handbag every day? Yes
Do you remember your first handbag? If so, what was it?
I got an all leather saddle bag purse from Ladybug/casual corner.
I had it for years.
Big purse or small purse? Once a huge purse person now medium (ok large but not suitcase).
I couldn’t even think to carry the bags I did when I was younger.
I’d have a heart attack or something.
Now for the key question. What’s in your bag?
1. Wallet – A long, envelope shaped wallet filled with credit cards, license, health insurance card, and change. Money I hope.
2.Glasses
3. Tissues
4. Pill case – BP and aleve (don’t leave home without it.
5. brush, comb and scrungie
6. Lip gloss
7. travel dog leash, dog treats and collapsable bowl & disposeable gloves
8. A (hopefully) mini water bottle – to take said pills – and for dog
9. Pen – maybe two.
10. Lots of keys (way to many)
11.book and book light
12. Nail file and clippers
13. Cell Phone
14. Paperback book (always)
15. Bandaids and afterbite (if it bites it loves my hubby)
16. Decaf green tea Teabags and splenda – because green tea keeps the weight off
17 last but not least “Zoey” (sometimes) She loves to ride in my bag.

My purse is a leather Tommy Hilfiger I’d have to say small. With my leather wallet ,m&m’s,excedrin for migrains, pamperin, iron med for my son(it’s 2 yrs old or+ lol)eye ointment for youngest son. and reciepts I have lip gloss too but I’d say thats about it.I never was big on carring purses because I never put anything in them.

My first bag was macrame. My second was Le Sportsac. I like the idea of a small one but life requires a big bag.
Contents:
1. Two wallets
2. Cell Phone
3. Kleenex
4. Pen
5. Grocery list–from last week with a chicken recipe from a chef I met at the checkout scribbled on the margin
6. Comb
7. Glucose tablets
8. Hand sanitizer
9. A tape measure in case I see pants that look like they may fit the munchkin’s tiny waist and long legs

Carly, I remember that when I was a little girl, I used to carry around my aunt’s or my mom’s handbag…it didn’t have to have anything in it though but I always filled it up throughout the day. I continued to carry a purse around throughout elementary and middle school, but once I hit high school, I became really active in sports, so I had to ditch the purse/handbag for an athletic bag…didn’t really go out much, so I didn’t need it, right? It wasn’t until recently that I started carrying a handbag again. My mom is a serious handbagaholic AND she must match bags with shoes…does anyone else do that? Well, now that I am back in the handbag carrying business I have a medium size bag…and yes, it must match my shoes/outfit. I must thank my mom because she is the source of my handbags…they make wonderful gifts…In it I carry:
1. chapstick (my lipgloss)
2. paperback- two or more
3. pens- several and a pencil or two
4. small notebook or lined paper- for when I am inspired to write some poetry
5. cell phone and charger- yep it’s small enough
6. wallet- filled with mostly bookstore gift cards
7. tissue
8. Wrigley’s spearmint gum- the big pack
9. necessary feminine products- maybe too much info here, but you never know when you will need it…I am not that organized
10. shades- no case…I should look into getting one of those
I have no idea how much it weighs, but I feel if I can still carry it around for hours without a ache in my shoulder, the weight is fine…
I hope that everyone had a great start to the week…
I heard from some of my relatives in Jamaica, so they are doing fine after Dean tore through there…it’s just the ones that I haven’t heard from yet that I worry about…
See you guys tomorrow…
A whole other topic: I will apologize now…
Has anyone read anything by Robyn Carr? I LOVE her Virgin River series…if not, check it out…

Jeannie — It sounds as though you need a SUITCASE to carry around, not a purse!
And I can just see Zoey poking her head out of your purse. Too Cute!

Janelle,

Zoey is becoming quite an attention getter. She comes to work with me and has been adopted by everyone in the shopping plaza.
She loves the attention and people get a kick out of her antics.
This week she had a bath in strawberry/kiwi no tears shampoo so she smells yummy too. We won’t even discuss the toy box that goes wherever
she does.
Carly,
I love Stone Mountain bags.:love2:
My husband darn near went into cardiac arrest when I cut
a hole for Zoey to pop her head out of one.
She looks great in it though and the cut is on a seam so it looks like it was made for her. I know I am spoiling her.
Hugs to everyone, after all we all need a hug no and then.

I love purses, but don’t like to carry them (is that an oxymoron)? If I can get away without one, I will. But when I do carry one, it’s on the smaller side. Only need my wallet, cell phone, sunglasses and chapstick. That’s it. Sometimes, I will change it up and carry something bigger, but it doesn’t last long. Carly, I think my first purse was a LeSportsac too. OMG, they were so popular!
Comment by Robin — August 20, 2007 @ 11:47 am
Janelle - the seats of our Cobra are suede…talk about stressful!! They look really cool with the Cobra stitched into the back but, Jeez. Things I had never paid much attention to before, now matter a lot. Can’t leave the pool with wet clothes, can’t let a drink sweat on the seat, can’t put grocery bags on the seat because the cold stuff in them sweats. And of course, a few innocent rain drops strike terror in me!
But..I love the car so I’ve learned to deal with the suede seats!
And for a really disgusting bit of information. Did you know that the bottom of a ladies purse is one of the nastiest things ever? I read an article about it, where they talked about all the places women sit their purses: bathroom floors/counters, floors in restaurants, etc. then they set them on their kitchen counters or tables.
(we need a barfing icon!)

2. Change purse
3.my glasses
4. lipstick

6. face powder
7. bottle of advil
8. packets of splenda
9. keys to work and home
10. A copy of Donna Kauffman’s The Black Sheep and the Princess

14. a bottle of clear nail polish
15. nail file
16. maxi pad

I also found on the very bottom, a crumpled tissue, a gum wrapper, a tic-tac, a paper clip, a movie ticket stub from Pirates of the Caribbean At world’s end, and 35 cents change.

Jodie — I’m glad you feel my pain about suede!
As for the bottom of purses — I read the same thing. I NEVER put my purse down on a bathroom floor, and I always try to hang my purse across the back of my seat when I’m in a restaurant. But, yeah, that info was GROSS!
We’ll be updating our icons soon with lots of fun ones, and I do believe there is a barfing icon included!

Okay, with everyone digging through their purses to see what’s inside, did anyone CLEAN OUT your purses while you were at it?
Comment by Janelle — August 20, 2007 @ 11:57 am
I’m a small purse fan. I used to carry big purses and would find myself digging forever trying to find things like keys and wallet when I needed them. So I really pared down–carry a very small clutch bag. Mini wallet, a small hairbrush, checkbook and cell phone. In the zip pocket are lipstick, Blistex, a few receipts that I don’t want to lose and an emergency tampon. That’s it!
Comment by Leslie — August 20, 2007 @ 11:59 am
Jeannie, I love that you take Zoey in your bag! My yorkie doesn’t like it one bit and he makes sure everyone knows it too, so I only take him on his leash.

Hi All,
It’s been a while.
After years of carrying very large diaper bags with everything inside, I no longer carry anything in a bag!!
My cell is attached to my waist, my keys in my hand with debit card & drivers license in my pocket.

Hi Tina,
So far she seems game for anything.
She is bound to get into trouble sooner or later.
For all 2 lbs of her she sure is adventurous.
She loves to climb. I think she is part billy goat.
She loves to play in the grass.
It’s fun to watch her cause she looks like she’s jumping hurdles.
I’ve been thinking, maybe I should write a childrens book.
The adventures of “Zoey” could be fun.
I’ll leave the romance writing to the experts.
I’ve been reading several books by Lora Leigh.
Wow, Very Spic-E-y stuff but she is an excellent writer.
I recently read “Safe Harbor” by Christine Feehan’s
and enjoyed the continuing Drake sisters book.
Comment by jeannie — August 20, 2007 @ 1:31 pm
I carry a medium to large purse. Seems like if I try to carry a small purse I have to leave something important behind. Right now I have the following in my purse: wallet, cell phone, day diary, Kidnapped by Jo Leigh, checkbook, 1 savings account book, coupons, ipod, emergency tampons, sunglasses, lipstick, chapstick, advil, 1 pen, 2 pencils, and misc receipts. Doesn’t seem like much, but takes up a good bit of room.
I’m pretty sure my grandmother gave me my first purse when I was 12, and I’ve carried one almost everyday since(in college I lived with a backpack, so no purse).

Carly, what a fun subject! I used to always carry a handbag but don’t much anymore! When I am running around town here I usually just take my fanny pack, which is so cute as it is a tapestry fabric with bunnies all over it. One of my friends brought it back to me from a trip to Jackson, WY., at that time I was still collecting bunnies. I get lots of comments on it. In my fanny pack is my keys, some loose change, my check book which has my ID, credit card, ATM card, insurance, etc., pictures of the grandkids & I tuck any paper money in there that is going with me. When I do carry a handbag it is medium size & must have compartments for necessary items. The one I have now is not real leather but a decent imitation & has pockets on the outside that hold my cell phone & another pocket for my keys & chapstick so I can just reach in their to grab either. The purse has compartments and I carry my checkbook, wallet, pens, list if I need it, mini phone/address book in case I need someone’s number that is not programmed into my cell, sometimes I take my small date book with me, nail clippers, emery board, Tylenol in a little tin, small pen light in case I need to see in the dark!, napkins from stopping at Starbucks or ??, a book if I am going to doctor, dentist or the airport, spare keys, and I think that is about it. Lots of times when I travel I trade the purse for my backpack which holds it all including camera, book, water, snack, tissues, anything I might need! I also take my fanny pack which has just the basics & is easy to carry around or I can wear it for hands free. For years I had a purse by Ameribag that is designed so take to weight off the shoulder & distribute it so your shoulder doesn’t get sore from the weight of all we have to carry. They are a great bag with many compartments that are designed to hold anything you might need. I want another one but just haven’t had the money. The one I have is of some indestructable material that never wears out, they also come in leather and I love these bags. The reason I quite carrying it is because I was at the movies & in the dark some gum got on it (better than on me!) & I didn’t discover it right away. The gum sort of melted into the fabric & it has this ugly spot on it so I no longer use the bag!

Okay, sorry to go on so long. Thanks for listening.
Love the idea of new emoticons, even a barfing one!

Jeannine: I can’t believe you cut a hole in your Stone Mountain purse. My hubby would literally have a COW (he would, too). He is SO afraid of my purse. He hates it when I have to pawn it on him (he picks it up like it has some infectious disease and barely carries it). TOO FUNNY!

My Purse?? You mean my ever changing suitcase, as my daughter calls it. Although, since I have been dealing with a herniated disc in my back, I am carrying a smaller one-for now.
For basics I must have- my wallet with all my id and cards in it, cash if I have any. A small bag that carries personal items and my epi-pen (NEVER leave home without it); cell phone, ipod (when I can get it), glasses case, a book, calendar and coupons for DSW, Borders (not that I use them with my emp discount) Hallmark and Bed, Bath and Beyond. I never have them when I need them if I don’t carry them.
I have sooo many purses it is asinine. Not as many as I do pairs of shoes, but, I can work on that. Hubby just calls me Imelda.
I was just shopping online at Shoebuy.com yesterday for some, and purses too.
I have been carrying a purse for as long as I can remember. I was just commenting to myself today that mine needs cleaning out- again.:wallbash:

Do you use a handbag every day? Yes
Do you remember your first handbag? If so, what was it?
Afraid I do not remember my first purse.
Big purse or small purse? Big, but not huge. A typical Mom purse.
My current purse is a burgundy leather Liz Claiborne I got at Marshall’s for $25. I love Marshall’s. I buy all my purses there.
Now for the key question. What’s in your bag?
1. Wallet – Small, folding kind with license, credit card, membership cards, health insurance card, and medical info card. Most of the time there is money in there.
2. Cell Phone
3. Paperback book
4. Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Maxalt, Inhaler
5. Comb, ponytail holder and hair barettes for daughter
6. Lip gloss, chap stick
7. Checkbook and pen
8. Change of clothes for daughter and plastic bag (still the occassional potty training accident)
9. Water bottle
10. Keys
11. Lotion
12. Purell
13. Bandaids
14. Crystal Light to Go
15. Toys (cars, little horses, coloring book and crayons)
16. Compact
I think that’s it. I have enjoyed reading that I’m not the only loaded purse person around.

My bag is huge. It defiantely has stickies in it. But, my favorite thing inside of it is the wristlet! carries the cards and money. I’m I’m lucky i can sqeeze a lip stick in it so if I don’t want to lug the big bag to the cafeteria to get coffe … I can just bring money. Of course the wirstlet is also great for a night out:cocktail:

I love this topic! I am not a shoe-aholic but I adore purses. I buy them at thrift stores and yard sales. At the momrnt I have about 20ish but I regularly use about three of them.
.My purse always has a few stray pennies floating around in it, my mom used to call it “gluck money”( luck) so that I would always be prosperous.( nice thought!) Cool subject.
Yes, I remember my first hand bag. My mom bought me a beaded blue and black long strap bag that was all the rage in the mid- seventies when I was a teen. I STILL have it but itis not at all wearable.
I always carry a purse with me when I go out except when I am just walking my dog.
I always carry my wallet with my atm card and i.d and pictures of my son ( and a really sexy shot of my husband from over 20 years ago! )and family. I carry an Advil bottle with various meds inside, a pony tail holder or three, a hair clip, a big brush, a mini purse that holds several lip balms, an eye liner, and two pens. I also have stashed in there a small snack, sometimes a water bottle, a small calender with various dr’s cards in it. Sometimes I tie a scarf around the handle of the purse. Oh and yes it is usually a fairly large bag

Janelle, I haven’t heard from anyone else yet, but I hope to in the next couple of days…I am sure that in certain parts of the island, there is no power…It’s just scary not knowing…they are all probably fine though…at least that is what the optimist in me says…
I loved today’s discussion…it is interesting to see what people lug around with them everyday…I forgot to add that I also have a mini flashlight for those times when I have to go to my car in the dark…I didn’t do any cleaning out of my purse either…the receipts need to be there right?
I love the idea of new emoticons…the barfing one would be great…are there any for optimists and pessimists or happy go lucky?
Jeannie you are too much…you have me rolling over LMAO…

…
talk to you guys in the a.m.

I buy one purse every 3 or 4 years. Something at Wal-Mart $15 or less. Usually black. Small. That’s it. When the purse gets too worn, I go buy another.
I must be a freak….
