Am I Not Enough?

Carly Icon

A Note From Buddy:

My parents brought in a new puppy. Meet Bailey Drogin. It was bad enough that last year I had to put up with a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel named Dylan for a week – before my father got an asthma attack and sent her packing. I thought that was the end of the newbies. After all, I’ve been here 9 years. Why would they want a high maintenance puppy to drive them insane when I’m so good?

But this weekend, in came a puppy named Bailey. She looks like me . . . sort of . . . when I was a puppy. She’s darker but she’ll lose her dark coloring and end up just like me. I wanted to hate her. I planned on ignoring her the way I ignored Dylan until they took her away.

But something funny happened and it happened quickly. Maybe it was because she did look like me. Maybe it was because she tried hard to be my friend while the other dog just walked in and thought she owned the place. Maybe it was because my parents named her Bailey because it went good with my name – Buddy. Bailey and Buddy. Or maybe it’s because they said they brought her home to keep me happy and young at heart. But I like her.

It helps that she’s trouble with a capital T. A holy terror. The first night she screamed ALL NIGHT so much that my parents finally took pity on me and brought me into their bed to sleep. That’s a good thing. My sister Jackie says Bailey sounds like a Child of the Corn when she’s wailing. Whatever that means, but they all found it funny. Mom had to already buy new food/water bowls because she lifted hers up and dumped out her food and dragged the bowls around the kitchen. Mom had to clean it up. Jen says I have a shadow. She’s smaller but I’m still cuter.

Then there’s her eating habits. She’s a piglet. When she eats, she eats ALL over the place and leaves a trail across the kitchen. It got so bad Mom started to feed her in her crate. The first time she knocked her food all over. Then mom got the new bowl which was more weighted at the bottom and now she eats better. It’s better for me because they tried to lock me out of my own kitchen so I wouldn’t steal her food. Is it my fault she eats too slow?

But they bought me new food when I stopped eating mine last week (pre-puppy) because after 9 years, I got sick and tired of Fish and Potato food. Do you blame me? Venison and Sweet Potato is so much better. They also bought me new biscuits. Yum. And I get lots of attention now that the puppy is here. More than she gets. That’s a good thing, right?

So I have a new little sister. She has to go to puppy obedience training with mom. They said she has the same teacher I had and that made them happy because they think I’m such a good boy. The vet said I have a lot to teach the little runt. I’m important.

And that’s always a good thing. So what I discovered is that they got the puppy not because I’m not enough but because they love me so much, they wanted even more of me. Even if it means more work for them.

I’m a lucky boy. Woof!

  1. Aw, Bailey is just too cute! Love her different-colored eyes. I can see her and Buddy will be life-long friends.

I love animals, especially dogs, and if I were home more, I’d love to have one (or more). They bring such joy and fun to life.

  2. Thanks, stacy. Her eyes photograph funny. They are both brown! I have a video I can’t figure out how to get up here … I have a Mac and the video is on the computer. I’m working on it, LOL.

  3. She’s cute. It’s good they are getting along well. I don’t think I could do 2 dogs. 1 is plenty.

    Comment by Stacy S — May 8, 2007 @ 6:44 am

  4. I have the movie on quicktime. If someone can email me directions, I can get this up.

  5. Sorry, no idea how to do the video but I’ll come back later today and see if it’s up.

When we got our 2nd dog she worried the crap out of our oldest (his name was Bailey too). But he was so patient with her. He let her lay on him, she’d grab hold and pull on his long, floppy ears like he was a chew toy. And when he’d had enough he’d growl and she’d flop down and sleep with him.

They became inseperable. Especially when she went into heat before we had her fixed.

  6. You’re asking the person who has 2 dogs :doggie:and 2 cats and 1 part-time dog (my grandson)?

At one time my parents had 3 dogs and 18 or so cats. I can’t imagine living without animals. When our last cat died, dh said no more. Then we got the dog, another cat, the other cat moved back from his daddy’s place cause he had more attention here and then dh went and got the other dog.

Poor Buddy- Bailey will keep him on the move. Which is a good thing. On the other hand, Carly you will need plenty of :cocktail::cocktail::cocktail:!!!

  8. Bailey is so cute and Buddy looks like a great big brother. I would have a dog if I had a house. So I just have to count my dad’s 4th child as my dog too. Lizzie is a huge chocolate lab who still thinks she is the tiny puppy she was 9 years ago. She is so sweet, but I will get a little bit smaller dog when I finally get a dog.

  9. Oh my Gosh…Bailey is adorable with those beautiful eyes! I’m glad to hear that Buddy has accepted her.
I have a yorkie named Macbeth, who is more baby than dog and I would love to get another so that he has a friend, but then I would have to hear hubby complain that he’s the only one who walks him, and vactioning has gotten difficult because I won’t leave him with anyone…I know I’ve become a crazy:doggie:lady…I’m not sure when that happened
Anyway, Congratulations on your new addition…and enjoy!

  10. That video is adorable. She’s a smart dog, she’s already figured out she can fit under the chairs and he can’t. Wait until the first time she runs under that chair and beats her head on the rung!!

  11. Baily is so cute and I’m so glad that Buddy had decided to like her. When Science Guy bought my babies for my b-day last year he said we had to have 2 so that they would have company during the day. Now at 8 months one weighs 5 lbs and the other is 16 lbs. I’m not sure what I did with out them.

  12. Awwww, so adorable! Let me tell you, that puppy must be keeping Carly plenty busy because she doesn’t even have time to talk to ME on the phone!

  13. Buddy,

You are so lucky to get a new sister. You are very nice to her, I can tell from the video. Don’t you feel younger already?

I had no idea you were so tall. Wow!

I have two kids ages 7 and 8 and the 7 yr old has two fish. He is so good with them. The other day Daddy dropped Pebbles (the girl) on the floor and I had to sweep in and rescue and resesitate her. Boy, was I ever the hero for all of 5 seconds.

So, I have been thinking of adding an older trained doggy to our home, what do you think? The only thing is we are gone from 6:00 Am until like 4:00 PM. Is that too much alone time for a doggie? Although, if we got one over the summer while we are all out of school maybe that would help. HMMMM

Anyways, you having been a family dog for so long seems to me just like the expert I need to be asking. So, if you have any advice Buddy—please impart the wisdom. I’m beggging you. (What a switch, since I hear you are really good at begging).

Thank you in advance and have a great day—enjoy Bailey, I predict you will be closer than you think.:love2:

  14. Ohhh…so so cute!

I would really love to get another dog, but Cassie would NOT be happy about it. She hates other dogs…remember her going after Killian (the beast) last summer? She’s fierce for a little runt.

    Comment by Leslie — May 8, 2007 @ 10:29 am

  15. Oh Buddy, your new friend is so cute just like you. What fun the two of you seem to have. Enjoy the days ahead.

  16. Bailey is SOO cute….We don’t have any pets. Three boys and a hubby are enough at the moment….LOL!

  17. my family has a sassy dog. I dont get to see her much because I’m away at college most of the times. Shes so spoiled its not even funny. She has this section of the couch and if you sit in that part and she wants to sit there too, she will make you move. Its like we wont be sitting there, she just comes up and sits on your face practically. Thats HER spot. But we all love her to death so we dont mind that shes a brat most of the time. She’d kill those evil rabbits that lurk outside our homes. Its like she knows I’m allergic to them and if they even think about coming in our yard she has a field day barking the crap out of them. She once collided with a rabbit in our backyard. We were all outside on this warm summer day just playing and all of a sudden she runs and then a bunny is flying in the air and savannah (our dog) is flipping around trying to find it again. I’d hate to of seen if she had actually captured it *shudder*. I cant see my parents having two dogs at once, we’ve had several dogs in the past but we never kept them long because they were too much to take care of for my parents. They already had 4 maniacs running around their house. But this time we picked the best dog ever. We didnt even tell my dad we bought her because he has always been so against pets in our house. We called him at work that day that my mom brought her home. He was PISSED

  18. OOPS didnt finish but i swear its not much longer lol. Anywho he was pissed with a capital P. But the minute he saw her, he fell in love. More in love then i think he loves his family lol.

  19. Buddy,
You are going to be a wonderful big brother. My baby, Misty, is an only child but she has lots of cousins who come over and play. She says two paws up for being so understanding of the new baby!:doggie::love2:

  20. Buddy, your such a sweetie treating Bailey like a member of the family already! You deserve all the extra attention they give you.

  21. Awe Buddy thnks for sharing the news of your new sister.

She looks like she is going to wear Mommy out.

Have fun and we always knew you were loved.

    The video is so cute.

My dog is in her last days and my hubby and I are struggling with the idea.

I would like to get another but we’re not sure it is wise as we are older

now. Oh hum we’ll see. I’ve never been without a pet and fish and birds

    aren’t going to cut it.

  22. What a beautiful Puppy!!! It is funny, how animals can be, whether they are new to the family or not. I have two Wonderful cats and couldn’t have just one because it was just too lonely without having someone to play and chase around with. It is cool that Buddy has a playmate now. I would recommend getting a second pet, if you only have one, or if you were pondering a new pet get two. It is always said if there are two of them, they are less likely to cause trouble when you are away:doggie:

  23. Bailey is so cute, but Buddy is adorable. I have three dogs and one is brand new. The other two dogs still don’t like her, but they will.

  24. I have a and he would freak if I brought in someone to play with him. He is king of the apartment.

My cat is a big fat male named Heidi. Yes a male named Heidi. He was named Heidi when he was born cause we couldn’t tell what sex he was. My mom kept saying a boy and everyone kept saying a girl. So we gave him to my oldest nephew’s mom who brought him back a week later and said it was a she and didn’t want to keep him. Well about a week or so later it became apparent she was a he but unfortunately the name stuck.

  25. Jodie- I had to laugh when you said that about beating her head on the rung. Our Lab was chasing his rope outside the other day and it went under and through and gardening stool I have out there. Charlie tried to run under it (all 80lbs of him) and hit his head. You could hear the stool twang, or maybe that was his skull. I half expected to see little cartoon birds swirling around his head. He just sat down and looked pitiful. On the other hand, we got a great laugh out of it!!

  26. jeannie- if there is a breed you like, check around to see if there is a rescue organization in the area. We got our doxie that way. She is older too and her owner had died. Next to Charlie, Isis is the best dog. Housebroken already, which was great.

I think pets of any kind are always a plus to families and to older people. When dad was still in the nursing home I used to take mine to visit. All the residents loved them. The adult home across from me spoils my two terribly. They love to go and sit and get petted. The dogs that is!!

  27. Buddy, your new sister is so cute. :doggie: You are being such a good big brother. Thanks for sharing the pictures & video with us.
Currently I do not have any pets as we are not allowed to have them where I live. Most of my married life & even after the divorce I had pets. I no longer miss them cause it is an expense I can’t afford & after raising two daughters & having pets for many years I like just taking care of myself! There are three couples that I animal/house sit for so I get my dog & cat fix from their pets!

  28. Oooh Bailey is so cute!! Buddy you are going to be a great big brother!
I have a 10 month old black lab. I got Jack when he was 9week old. As soon as I saw him it was love at first sight:love2: I never had a dog so when he was crying in his create at 3am and eating my favorite and of course most expensive shoes I thought I was going to pull my hair out. Thankfully he is past that stage, kind of and I can’t imagine not haing him. When Jack gets a bit older I’ll get another puppy, and all the newspapers in my town will once again be on my kitchen floor

  29. I had my skinny little black cat Jarren for about two years when I started bugging my husband for a kitten for her to play with. He finally relented shortly after his birthday last year so we went to the pound to pick one up. I wasn’t too impressed with the kittens and neither was he…. but they did have a huge orange cat that LOVED to be petted and cuddled. Needless to say, we brought her home to my beloved Jarren who thinks she’s Queen of the House. Jarren HATED Sunshine with a passion for about 2 and half months, then just when I thought Jarren would hate her (Sunshine loves everyone and everything) forever they started wrestling and playing. Now they’ll even clean each other!
Little Jarren still rules the roost and when they’re playing she has to win (even though Sunshine outweighs her by at least 10lbs, Jarren still thinks she’s the bigger cat) or she’ll be grouchy for hours. Naturally, Sunshine complies with the little tyrant’s demands!

  30. I have to tell you that my boys ‘adopted’ my mom’s (their Nana’s) dog as their own…….we are a collie extended family with my mom having a collie, my brother’s family has a collie (and an Alaskan Malamute…they love big dogs!)….when we get a dog in the distant future, it’s a collie for us. I already have plans to get this mythical dog certified as a helper dog for my son with autism (like a ’seeing eye dog’, but you can get them for special needs children). He’ll probably give her french kisses like he gives all other dogs french kisses (I wish I was kidding).

  31. Really cute video. Bailey and Buddy will be great together I believe. Have loved dogs all my life and always had one. My last dog was also named Bayle (different spelling), but she was a Bedlington Terrier…a real charmer and my best friend.

  34. Awww how cute - love the video! My Buddy is almost 8 months old and my husband just said he needs a playmate. Maybe if it was the same time but to do “puppy training” all over again - yikes! Right now I say no because of the 24 dirty paw prints I have all over my family room carpeting but had to leave for work for a meeting so couldn’t clean them up. Have fun Buddy and Bailey.

  35. Buddy, you have such a cute sister. I’m certain you are the “good son” to your new sister…LOL.

No pets for me, as my daughter’s medical problems takes almost all my time. Always had an asthmatic son who was allergic, but, even if not, couldn’t have afforded to have pets anyway.

Buddy’s mom, have a great getaway with your hubby. Marriages always need them. *See* you when you return.

  36. What a cutey!!!! Crate training is best, but I don’t suggest feeding her in the crate. Give her an alotted time to eat then pick up the dish. The crating will save on any destruction especially when you go out - leave her plenty of toys and chewys. Also the potty traing works well with crating. This all worked well with my Sweetheart, we even crated her in our motorhome, and she is the best behaved dog(unless you dropped a dirty sock in front of her then it was tug of war, but she got over that when she turned 1 year old). Lots of luck - dogs are the best. Suzanne
