Got Gas?
Okay, let’s see a show of hands (
) of how many of you read today’s subject and thought we’d be discussing flatulence and farting?
Well, that’s definitely a topic I’m sure would make for an interesting day, but the kind of gas I’m talking about is fuel for a vehicle.
I was running near empty and needed to get some gas for my car. So, I pull into the nearest Shell/Texaco station and start filling up, without paying much attention to the cost of gas, until the nozzle shuts off. That’s when I had to do a double take at the amount I owed to fill my gas tank . . . over $80.00! And that was for REGULAR unleaded gas. Just regular, I tell you – not even SUPREME! ![]()
That’s when I finally take a look at the price of gas . . . $3.78 a gallon for regular unleaded gas! (Premium/Surpreme was OVER $4.00 gallon!
) I have a Chevy Tahoe (which I love and won’t part with!) with a 24 gallon gas tank, and well, you do the math. Unbelievable! I’m honestly still in shock, but grateful that I only fill up once every week and a half to two weeks. What about those people who commute 40-60 miles each way into Los Angeles EVERY DAY for work and fill up twice a week? I can’t even imagine how much their fuel bill is! ![]()
Anyway, a day or two later I’m watching a news segment about the cost of gas throughout the United States, and how it is the HIGHEST in California (and will probably hit well over $4.00 a gallon by summertime), and has even surpassed Hawaii in cost, which is shocking since they have to have their fuel shipped to them. So how in the world did California become the most expensive place to purchase gas for a car?
And why is there such a huge discrepancy in cost from state to state for fuel?
So, my inquiring mind wants to know: where do you live and what is the current cost of regular unleaded gas per gallon?

Here in the Chicago ‘burbs, I got gas last Thursday at it was $2.78/gallon for regular.
Comment by Stacy ~ — April 5, 2007 @ 6:28 am
Here in Albany, NY area it is running about $3.85/gal. I am close to the Vermont border, so sometimes i go there and it is about .20 cheaper. And that was a full serve station.
California has all these wonderful additives that their special emmissions systems have to have which is why they are so high. NY is high because so much of it is taxes.
Gas is high everywhere because of the Oil companies greed and ridiculously high salaries for the execs and the profits they make. Someone is obviously lying about why it is so high when companies like Exxon/Mobile are making insanly obscene profits like they have been.

Tampa, Florida reports in at $2.67 yesterday morning…and $2.69 by yesterday afternoon. I knew Janelle’s post was coming up, so I checked! I hate when they change the price in the middle of the day. When we were in California last month, we were shocked by the higher prices. I’ll remember not to complain too loudly when I fill up today.
Comment by Julie Leto — April 5, 2007 @ 6:50 am
I paid $2.52 yesterday and I’m in Georgia. After seeing these other prices I’m not going to complain about ours anymore.
Comment by Suz — April 5, 2007 @ 7:01 am
Our gas is $2.39 in South Carolina. And that’s in large part because our state has a low sales tax on gas.
Comment by Theresa N. — April 5, 2007 @ 7:19 am
In Massachusetts it ranges depending on what city you drive to to get it. If you get here at the end of 128 then you are going to pay $2.79 a gallan. But I got some closer towards Boston and it was $2.65. I won’t go to Full serve anymore because it is even more expensive than the self serve. And I am in the same boat as you. I drive a Ddge Durango with a V8 engine. So you just think about stepping on the gas pedal and the gas gauge goes down!
But I love my car and feel safe driving in the snow with my daughter. And yes ut us April 5th and we got SNOW last night. LOL!
Comment by Kelly F. — April 5, 2007 @ 7:31 am
Hi,
I don’t drive (who can afford it?) Here in Canada gas is about $98.9 a litre. That was this morning around 7am. I anticipate it will be over a dollar a litre by days end due to the holiday. It has long been proven that the gas companies (in Canada anyhow) raise their prices just before the weekend.
A US gallon is about 3.79 litres so we’re looking at about $3.75 a gallon right now. I’m about half-way between Toronto and Ottawa Ontario so our city is likely a bit lower.
Comment by Dayle — April 5, 2007 @ 7:40 am
I filled up yesterday, too. Here in Alabama it’s 2.59. Several months ago, for about a day, we dropped down to 1.98. I should have taken a picture.
Comment by Rhonda Nelson — April 5, 2007 @ 7:54 am
I’m in northeastern Ohio and it was $2.65 a gallon yesterday.
Comment by Cheryl S. — April 5, 2007 @ 7:57 am
I miss Tampa … but that’s off-topic.
Gas in NJ was around 2.60 something this morning and we don’t have to pump it. (Everyone made fun of me when I went to college and said I pumped my own gas today … until they realized where I was from.) But, it makes no sense that it’s going up and varies vastly … I hate when I have to fill it up on the NY Thruway, it’s vastly higher.
But, unfortunately, that beats pushing my car circa Fred Flinstone.
Comment by Yolanda — April 5, 2007 @ 7:57 am
In Southern Indiana gas is $2.69 for the cheap stuff. Miss the days of when it was like 1.29
Comment by Stacy S — April 5, 2007 @ 8:04 am
You mean some of you still have the choice of full service gas????
I’m shocked! Honestly, I had no idea this still existed. There are NO full service stations here anymore. The last one switched over the self serve only about seven years ago. I remember because I’d drive there especially when I was pregnant and when my daughter was an infant. Alas, no more.
Yolanda, are you originally from here?
Comment by Julie Leto — April 5, 2007 @ 8:09 am
I’m in NC, by the coast, and it was $2.69 yesterday when I got gas. I use my debit card and the tanks automatically shut off at $50. I can’t get a full tank of gas anymore, so I don’t end up with the shock factor Janelle has.
The thing I don’t understand is the headline I saw on Yahoo a week or two ago that said gas prices were down to $59/barrel. Down - doesn’t that mean at the pumps it should be going down instead of up?
I think Dayle’s right though. Around here they definitely jack up the prices during holiday and we have spring break this week and next. I’ll be traveling to Ohio and I’m always amazed - and ticked - and how the prices go up on the interstate. They know you’re stuck - what are you gonna do - drive 30 miles off the beaten path to find a cheaper price? - so they take advantage.
The headline did make me think of a gas station around here that has a billboard that reads: Eat Here Get Gas. I have yet to figure out if they meant it to read that way or if it was a huge oversight and they don’t want to pay to have it changed (lol).
Comment by Jodie — April 5, 2007 @ 8:12 am
It is about $2.59 here in North Carolina(Raleigh area). That was two days ago when I went to the grocery store, I am sure with the holiday weekend it will be going up.
Comment by Shannon T. — April 5, 2007 @ 8:31 am
I didn’t know full service station existed anymore either. I remember loving it when I was a kid. Here is St Petersburg the gas did the same thing as Julie saw. It was $2.65 yesterday morning and $2.69 by the time I left work.
I recently bought a Ford Escape LTD and I love it. The gas to fill it up cost me much more then my little Saturn did but I wouldn’t want to go back.
At the rate it’s going this summer we’ll all have to communicate by phone and emails cause it’ll cost to much to drive anywhere.
All I can say is thank god for online shopping!!!
Comment by Vicki — April 5, 2007 @ 8:40 am
I live on the east coast as of yesterday haven’t been out yet this morning it was $ 2. 75 Man when will it stop
Comment by Sue — April 5, 2007 @ 8:44 am
Last I saw a few days ago, gas was 2.67, it could be more.
When ever the price of gas goes up, I am thankful I catch the bus.

I’m in Texas and we were at $2.58 a day or so ago when I got gas. And yes, we’re bitching about it. I guess we should shut up. That’s so ridiculous, Janelle. I can’t believe gas is that high. I’m so thankful I don’t commute. My hubby drives @50-100 miles per day, but his company foots the bill for the gas. I guess we’re lucky. I drive through the express lane at three different schools, but everything’s near my house so I don’t use much gas. I guess no RV trips for awhile (this is a joke because I HATE RV’s and would rather cut off my fingers than be stuck in one. It goes back to a hellacious spring break where me, the three kids and hubby got stuck in my parents RV with them for four days–it was storming outside. Anyhow, it was horrible. I remembered every reason why I’d moved out of the house in the first place and vowed never, NEVER to spend four days cooped up with my mother again. Then again, I guess fate has a twisted sense of humor because now that my father’s passed on, she lives with me). Anyway, NO RVS EVER!
Comment by Kimberly Raye — April 5, 2007 @ 8:53 am
I, like Kelly F. live in Massachusetts, about 20 minutes North of Boston. As of yesterday, gas was $2.68 for regular. We still have full service stations around too!
Comment by Barbara-Jo — April 5, 2007 @ 8:57 am
In Nashville this morning it ranged from $2.43 to 2.54 depending on which part of town you are in…it’s usually cheaper to buy near work, so I missed out on the cheaper gas. I know that in Nashville the gas is more expensive than in the burbs because we have higher emmission requirements. In fact to get your car tags your car has to pass emmission testing before you can even pay for your tags. But after seeing the CA prices, I feel like I didn’t pay anything for gas this morning.
Comment by Liza — April 5, 2007 @ 9:06 am
Well i live in North Iowa.. and yesterday was 2.59 for ethanol blend unleaded which i use to 2.62 for regular unleaded.. who can afford premium..lol..
I too just last july bought a GMC Envoy 4wheel drive but i wont part with it.. i drive about 20 miles a day round trip to work, and hubby has a truch that he drives about 50 miles round trip to work, and with a daughter driving we buy alot of gas…more than i want to at times…
with my school salary and his military salary… it takes a good chunk just to get to work..
Comment by Jolene — April 5, 2007 @ 9:18 am
In TX, we’re at about $2.50 a gallon. I can’t believe how outrageous the price of gas is in CA! I didn’t think anyone’s gas was more expensive than Hawaii! How absurd is that?!
Comment by Lara — April 5, 2007 @ 9:20 am
Melbourne, FL - $2.67
And I drive a Ford Expedition and I’m not about to get rid of it either. I consider it my shopping bag on wheels. It’s the best accessory I’ve ever bought!

I’m in Tampa like Julie, so I won’t duplicate her numbers. =)
Just wanted to say that California always seems to be a dollar more. Way back in the dark ages, when gas was still just over a dollar, my other half and I visited an friend in L.A. and saw a Texaco selling regular fuel for $2.69. It was so *crazy* that we took a photo to show all our friends when we got home. Now $2.69 is normal!
*sighs*
Comment by Erica Ridley — April 5, 2007 @ 9:47 am
I think the last I saw we were about 2.39 in South Arkansas (but we have been over 3.00 in the past) and we complain about it being high here. But the reason being is, we have a HUGE oil refinery right here in town that makes gas and desiel all day long, and yet, the farther away from my town you get, gas gets a little bit cheaper and cheaper.
Comment by Keri Ford — April 5, 2007 @ 10:11 am
I’m in northeastern Pennsylvania and it’s $2.56 here.
Julie, you would love the small town I live in, all the stations are full service and best of all at no extra charge!
Comment by Susan — April 5, 2007 @ 10:24 am
I’m about 20 miles south of Richmond, Va. and gas prices average around 2.50 a gallon. But the further north I go (towards D.C.) it seem’s to go up about every ten miles. I love to drive and unless I have to take out a loan to put gas in my car I’m going to keep filling up.
Comment by Carol R — April 5, 2007 @ 10:37 am
I envy all of you who have gas prices BELOW $3.00 a gallon. Geez, don’t I wish!
No full service stations around here, either! Then again, I cringe to think how much they’d charge per gallon to pump your gas!
I’m lucky in as that I live about five miles from a major shopping center, so I don’t have to travel far for shopping. However, I do try to have a “shopping/errand day” once a week. I make lists of everything I need to do, and try to get it done all in one day. I even plan out where to go first to be more gas efficient! It’s crazy, but it’s starting to become a habit and the only way I know of to try and conserve gas!
After driving down to Newport Beach yesterday (60 plus miles from where I live), I’m going to have to fill up the Tahoe again today, and I’m dreading it.

Well to our surprise we arrived in Maine to a huge snow storm. Yup April 5th and we are looking at snow higher than the windowsill by about a foot.
I have some great pics it’s like being surrounded by a picture postcard.
Now to gas. It’s at about 2,80 here in Maine and that is the same as RI.
The kicker here is that there is a strike of some kind in Canada and mst of our propane comes from there. Are you ready $4.00 a gallon for heat and cooking. Ouch! Wel this is a chuckle for the day. It’s one of those you knoe men roll your eyes moments. I wanted to take the Element (4 wheel drive)
but “Noooo!” Hubby (the love of my life) decides it’s nly going to be flurries so we can take the two wheel drive truck. Why? So he can bring his tools and a few plants. We have had approximately 20 ” and it’s still coming down. We could stop for food cause theroads were getting bad so we have:
Rice, Cheerios and complete pancake mix until we can get a plow out here.
Oh yeah and thank goodness for Tea. Melting snow for water is fun! :*)
Anyway I had intended to read and have plenty of time now. Heck I may be snowed in for weeks and then I could really diet. Hugs to all.
Enjoy your Holiday!

But you can always come visit!
Comment by Julie Leto — April 5, 2007 @ 11:35 am
Hi Janelle….where I live, near Oregon, it is $2.79 (with my store discount)when I filled up last week. Here in Seattle, WA (where I am visiting) it is OVER $3 (about $3.15 or so) for regular. I about died. I drive a minivan, combine errands, don’t do unnecessary stuff, etc.
I think another reason why it is higher in some places, like California, is about demand. California has a lot of demand (you have to drive everywhere, the nature of the beast). Just trying to give an economic reason. I also think that the oil companies have a willing market. I am a little concerned about California’s prices (we are going to be visiting there in the summer).

Janelle, I feel you pain.
It’s $3.21 in Reno, but by the time I get off work today, if true to form, it should be $3.24. But since it is a holiday weekend the price should go up another $0.06 by Saturday.
Comment by Ardie — April 5, 2007 @ 12:40 pm
Gas in the twin cities of Minnesota is $2.49/gal. At least it was when I returned this morning from running a few errands. They change the price of gas more often than a teenager changes their clothes…and that can be quite often. I guess the record billions the oil companies make are not enough…hard to believe.

ACK! I forgot about this weekend being a holiday weekend! I’m definitely filling up today before prices go up tonight or tomorrow!!!
Comment by Janelle — April 5, 2007 @ 12:52 pm
You know, the cost of living in general is so HIGH in California, above and beyond having the highest gas prices, and it’s absolutely ridiculous because people’s wages have NOT increased with the price hikes from everything to milk and bread, to gas, to housing.
I’ve told my husband that in order for my daughters to continue living in California after they’re married, they’re going to need to marry someone rich, LOL. Seriously, though, the AVERAGE cost of a home here in Southern California is $500,000. And that’s in a middle class neighborhood.
My husband and I have lived in our current home for 17 years come June, and even we couldn’t afford to sell and move somewhere else in California. It’s AWFUL!
Comment by Janelle — April 5, 2007 @ 12:56 pm
Janelle, $3.19 (regular) in the San Fernando Valley area of L.A. (&, that’s knowing what station to go for the cheapest). Like you, I plan errands in order to get the best mileage. Somehow, amazingly, no one is complaining (I think it’s because we remember when gas was rationed, where we had to fill up on every-other-days at 5 A.M.) In addition, alternative modes of transportation don’t work in L.A., with differences in working hours & very spread-out living locations. Like ev stated, I’ve heard the high prices are tied to the additives that must be added to CA gas for environmental reasons. Articles also quote the lousy & very old oil refineries.

Comment by Patricia — April 5, 2007 @ 1:25 pm
No clue. I live in NYC, don’t own a car and use public transit. I know it’s not an option in lots of parts of the country, but not having to deal with car payments, insurance and the vagaries of gas prices makes my rent look almost rational.
It’s very, very nice not to have to care about gas prices.
Comment by romblogreader — April 5, 2007 @ 2:34 pm
Hi Janelle,
Also, Spring break is this week & next week so of course we have to pay more! Again, why? Cause we are being ripped off by the oil companies & dear old California has so many taxes on gas it is pitiful & we voted some of it in to pay for highway improvements!! Oh yea, I’m in northern California, Sonoma county. Here is my small, tourist town gas at the stations I saw was $3.25. I filled up in Santa Rosa which is bigger & therefore a little cheaper. The only way the gas companies will quite gouging us is if we lower our demand & consumption. We are all addicted to our cars, we complain & keep driving!!
I’m as guilty as everyone else! Since I’m not working & can walk most everywhere here in town sometimes a tank of gas lasts me a month & I get good mileage on my small car, thank heavens!
I filled up Tuesday at Costco, at that time it was $3.13 for regular unleaded. This time of year the refineries are switching over to summer blend so there is less gas being produced. Why we have to pay more at that time is beyond my understanding!
In about a week & a half I’m going to Oregon where gas is still under $3 a gallon & you are not allowed to pump your own. There are attendants that pump gas & will wash your windows if you ask. I love it! I always fill up in Grants Pass before heading home as I don’t have to buy gas again. Yea, for good gas mileage!
Comment by Donna M — April 5, 2007 @ 3:19 pm
Hi all:
I filled up over the weekend and paid $2.46 for regular unleaded. But that was for my truck. My car needs premium and I hate to think about how much I’ll end up paying tonight or tomorrow
. Around here premium adds about 25 cents to a gallon.
But check out http://www.gasbuddy.com . Click on a state and then click on a town (if you’re lucky) and you can see what gas prices might be in your neighborhood without driving around.
Take care………Wayne
Comment by Wayne (aka Trybble) — April 5, 2007 @ 3:39 pm
I just filled up in upstate South Carolina and I paid 2.56 a gallon for it. This time last week it was about 2.30!! What most people don’t know is it is against the law for gas prices to raise unless you receive a gasoline delivery. You can not charge more for gasoline that the federal government allows because the nice little invoice informs them how much the company charged them. If they are profiting more than 10 cents per gallon, then the federal government can raise their taxes on that delivery. What sucks is for those of us that work for little more than minimum wage, those gas increases almos make going to work a moot point. I mean, if your bring home pay is 200 bucks a week and you are spending 125 on gasoline and car upkeep, then what are you working for?
I just had this very conversation with my boss….for all the good it did *sigh*

It’s about a dollar cheaper in PA. Seems like it’s the cheapest in the south. I’m guessing it’s all relative to income. In other words, how much you’d be willing to pay considering what you make. It still sucks.

NJ is mandatory full service, and they are still cheaper than NY.
I have a small SUV- Toyota Rav4 and get about 25-30/mpg. I love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Hubby has a Chrysler 300C with a 5.7 hemi. It gets about the same as mine, but a lot bigger tank!!
Comment by ev — April 5, 2007 @ 4:44 pm
I’m curious - why is full service mandatory?
The last full service station here just quit selling gas about 6 months ago because it was just too expensive for them to be able to operate that way. They’re now just a service station for inspections and repairs, that type of thing.

Oregon has miniserve (I live near Oregon). They passed a law a LONG time ago making it so you can’t pump your own gas (I have heard it is for safety, but I think it is to save jobs). It annoys my dad and hubby. They always get out anyway. LOL!
Comment by katie — April 5, 2007 @ 7:08 pm
I live near Syracuse, NY, and at my last fill up, it was $2.83. There is an indian reservation nearby that owns several gas stations, and gas is usually 10-12 cents less per gallon. Their station that is full service charges a penny more per gallon than their others. I don’t mind pumping my own gas, but on those cold, wintry days, I’ll pay the extra penny.
I’m fortunate to be able to walk to work, but the shopping in my small college town is extremely limited. Our grocery store prices are ridiculous. It’s worth it (or at least it was!) to drive the 25 miles to Walmart to get groceries.
Comment by Shari — April 5, 2007 @ 7:15 pm
Hey Shari- that’s where I am from and I know exactly where you get your gas. I used to too.
I usually end up at BJ’s where gas is usually cheaper than anywhere else, and I drive by it almost daily. Unfortunately ours only takes credit/debit cards, but it is worth my membership.
I also check albanygasprices.com to see who around me or where I will be is charging. Most areas have a …gasprices.com or cheapgas.com (I think) link.
NJ has a law that says no self-pump of gas. Saves idiots from leaving the hose in their tank and driving off or just driving off without paying.

West Haven, Connecticut I saw a gas station tonight 2.79 that I usually go to, but if Sam’s is cheaper I go there. I have an Hyundai Sante Fe and I try not to let it go past 1/2 or of I do

I live in West Virginia and filled up this morning at $2.75 a gallon. After reading everyone elses response I won’t complain about our price anymore. The varrying prices by state and even stations across the street from eachother is a very intersting question. We may never have the answer.

So now you are near Albany, Ev? Do you miss Central NY? I love small town living (population 2,500) but I miss the amenities of living in a more metropolitan area. Last year, when gas was $3.25/gallon, it was hard to justify driving 40 minutes to shop. And I love to shop; even just window shopping. Window shopping on the internet doesn’t have the same zing. I like to pick things up and study them, touch them, smell them (when appropriate, of course
), etc. I love going to the mall. I took my niece to the mall last weekend; a 70 mile round trip outing. I didn’t mind spending the extra money on gas to have quality time with one of my favorite persons in the world.

I’m in the Ft.Worth area of Texas. In my neighborhood the price of gas is around $2.70/gal. In Dallas (just because they are Dallas I suppose) the price is closer to $3/gal if not over.
I think I’ll keep filling up at my grocery store’s station - where I get 10cents off a gal!

I’m guessing it has something to do with population/consumption. Or not.
The prices have been inching upward over the past few weeks. I freaking hate OPEC.

Im in Laurel, MD and i filled up on Tuesday night and it was $2.59, today it was at $2.79. Just remember pumping gas during the day the prices are higher than at night too…

I had to fill up yesterday to take my daughter to see her specialist who is out of town. Filling up I paid $2.59.9 by the time we came back home the price had risen to $2.69.9.
Gas started going up the first week of March when the Spring Breaks started all around the country. Then with Easter this weekend . Heaven help us.
I live 12 miles out in the country. Just traveling to town and around the entire trip is probably 30 miles. Makes me want to move to town.
I have a friend who lives in town doesn’t travel but about 30 miles a week taking her kids to school. She doesn’t realize just how much the price of gas effects my pocketbook.:doggie:

We’re in the California Bay Area, and I think the cheapest unleaded these days is something like $3.29/gallon. I’ve been putting off refilling the tank but can’t hold off any longer… sigh

Wow! I am amazed at all the different prices! Well I live in Chesterton, Indiana which is an hour away from Chicago. Our gas ranges from $2.60 to $2.85.
Oh my gosh, there are full-service gas stations still in existence?! I thought that dissappeared a long time ago.
Happy Easter every one!

I only skimmed comments because I was curious about the costs, so someone else may have beat me to it, but there are two states where it’s against the law to pump your own gas, Oregon being one. I’m pretty sure New Jersey is the other. Yeah, this article mentions both but it’s a few years old.

I live in PA and it differes where you go — Our highest here is 2.60
But we use the giant Eagle advantage card and get about 1.00 or 1.10 off from gas and it really helps
