Bad Hair Day

Carly Icon

I know, I know, you all thought this was going to be yet another post about Carly and her hair. Curly hair, straight hair, blonde hair, brown hair, red hair. At least she has hair. Because this post isn’t from Carly. It’s from me. Buddy. The dog she claims to love. Well if she loved me, would she let me walk out of the hair salon looking like this?

BEFORE

AFTER

Well this hairdo was a mistake and I (Buddy) was too stupid to say anything.

What about you pet owners out there? Have you ever tortured your beloved pet/best friend with bad hair and lived to regret it?

  1. Yikes! Poor Buddy. Is it bad that I like the “before” picture much better? He looks so cute with long hair. :doggie:

  2. My dog before Lady was a chow-lab mix named Buggabear. He was a mean dog. Not “mean” mean, but well, he was half chow, so he was ultra-protective and he was a mass of black fur with the chow “mane” so it was ultra intimidating looking. After we moved back from Atlanta, my husband decided to have him shaved. He went from 100% chow looking to 100% lab looking in one shot. He HATED it and frankly, he looked stupid. BUT it was a lot cooler in our hot Florida weather. I only did it a few times and once he became a house dog, tried not to do it very often. One time at the start of summer. So I know what poor Buddy is going through (though he looks better than Bugga ever did.)

BTW, used to have my Persian lion-cut in the summer, too. Man, she wouldn’t look at me for a week every time we did it.

  3. Oh this was so unintentional. He looked so good before. What happened was that as you all know, the man who groomed him passed away, and his assistant took over. All is fine except he doesn’t cut. The first person he hired gave a great haircut but she wasn’t reliable. The second person he hired was trained by Mike, so we thought “no problem!” Obviously we thought wrong. We all wanted to cry when they brought him out! It wasn’t even like Janelle’s cat where you could laugh too. This was pure “Are you sure that’s my dog” and “can we leave him until it grows back?”

  4. Walking out of the kennel is something i will never forget, and i say never because at the time he looked like a hairless rodent! I was not laughing at the situation because my puppy dog looks like A HAIRLESS RODENT! I went into the kennel all excited because he was getting cut by a new girl. And he come out and NONE of us move to pet him. I think he felt sad  bu i felt stunned . But i gave him a break and now i think he doesn’t notice
it. Only when Jackie comes in and tortures him and calls him UGLY! :doggie::doggie: :doggie:

  5. Oh, Buddy, I’m sorry. But she does love you because you’ll be so much more comfortable this summer when it’s really hot.

We had a golden retriever that we gave a summer cut to every year. He hated it and he’d walk around the back yard and hide because he was so humiliated. But last year we didn’t cut him. And during the heat wave at the end of July he had a heat stroke and died.

We still haven’t forgiven ourselves for that, and I’m sure we never will. So this summer, when it’s very hot, you’ll be glad she did this horrible, nasty, degrading thing to you.

  6. Oh, Jodie that is so sad.
We didn’t even do this for comfort but you’re right. He may be happier … when the family stops giving him a hard time, that is.
Isn’t it funny that they DO get humiliated and hide and do things that show they KNOW they look bad or different, LOL!

  7. mom, i am sorry i made that comment but he was UGLY, and TERRIFYING MY POOR BUDDY  and on my part i said that he was now even!! trying to make Alex ( groomer) feel better after some comments made :doggie:

  8. Yes! Very recently!

Cassie has very soft fur that mats up when she gets too long, and I let her go between groomings for far longer than I should have last fall. Wanting her to look nice at Christmas time, I took her to the groomers on 12/23, but they said she was so matted & knotted up at the very base of her fur that they had to completely shave her.

She was NOT PLEASED. We had a bare rat instead of a pouffy dog for a couple of weeks.

  9. I’ve got a Bichon which I absolutely love, but the skin allergies that go along with the breed are pretty daunting. Every time he grows out all fluffy and curly, he’ll get a flea bite–which he’s allergic to–which will promptly turn into a hot spot. It’s terrible. He’s just gotten beautiful again from the last time I had to have him shaved and he’s got a new hot spot on his jaw. I’ve already made an appt with the groomer and mourning the loss of his pretty curly coat.

To make matters worse, there’s really nothing I can do to make sure it doesn’t happen anymore. I’ve treated the yard for fleas and he’s on Frontline Plus. Frontline Plus kills the fleas *after* they bite. And with Ollie, after he’s been bitten it’s too late. Grrr!!!

    Comment by Rhonda Nelson — April 3, 2007 @ 8:11 am

  10. Rhonda- my dog also gets hot spots. I have found that Tea Tree Oil, applied to the bite or hot spot actually helps. I use it for my excema (I cna’t spell today) and it is amazing how it works. I get it at the local beauty supply store. They sell 2 bottle types and I get the one for nails (it’s all 100% so who cares- the nail one has an applicator and usually more in the bottle for a cheaper price- go figure). It stops the itching and heals the area. Plus, Charlie doesn’t lick or dig at it the way he does with the medicine the vet gives me. Heals way quicker.

  11. Hmmm….Carly, I think I’d stick with the we-did-this-because-we-love-you and it’s better for you story.

  12. Hi Buddy, my name is Isis and I feel your pain.

Daddy insists I get a hair cut and mommy is putting it off as long as she can. Mommy wouldn’t do it during the cold weather- I had never seen snow before this year, so I really needed the extra warmth!

You see I am a wired haired doxie mix and my coat gets all curly and pretty but then it also gets snarls in it. Daddy says I have to get it done cause I don’t look pretty.

Mommy just calls me a furry sausage. (don’t tell Daddy, but even though I am supposed to be his dog, I love mommy best. She feeds me and walks me and plays with me. He brushes me, which I love, but I will defend mommy from any bad person. Including daddy when he tries to kiss her goodbye in the morning. I follow her from room to room all day long, and if she is late getting home, I wait up for her while daddy goes upstairs to bed. Of course, she is also the one that hears me in the middle of the night if I have to go out.)

When I get my haircut, we can have a pity party together. And pooh on those people who say we are ugly. It’s not like we have opposable thumbs and can cut our own hair, is it??

  13. Poor Buddy…but he still looks like the sweetest dog in the world(other than my Lizzie dog). My friends shave their airdale twice a year and she hides for a week every time.

  14. Thanks, Ev! I’ll try that.

  17. Poor Buddy!:doggie: We feel your pain!

I don’t have animals, but I have kids who I have given horrible hair cuts to. After the last one, I cried:cry:then turned to my dh and said, “You know I can’t cut hair yet you let me think I can and watch me get the sciccors, shaver…and don’t stop me?!!?”

Therefore, I say Buddy at least your own mommy didn’t do this to you.

    We love you no matter!!!!:love2::love2:

  19. Hey Buddy, it’s Meisha, I’m a 7 month old Shih-Tzu. Mom read the post to me this morning and I feel for you. I’ve only been groomed twice so far and it’s not been to bad but let me tell you some of those dogs I see coming out of there…whoa. I hate that mom takes me and leaves me there too. It’s scary.

Just wanted to tell you that your family loves you even if they tease you. Have you ever really listened to the teasing they do to each other? Hmmmm…if I spoke to them that way I’d get in trouble.

Best thing is it will grow man. It will grow. Now the next time your mom says it’s time to go get groomed, hide. Don’t come out from under the bed unless she promises to take you to another groomer. She will anyway cause she loves you bunches. My mom says that she talks about you a lot and it always makes the plotmonkey readers smile. Plotmonkeys are the best.

I can’t wait to see your pic when your hair grows out some. And hey, a new cut is the freedom to roll around all over the carpet and really get those itchy places scratched.

  20. Buddy, you still rock! I have a sheltie mix and she has extremely long hair. The first and last time I ever took Misty to a groomer she was so traumatized that she ran away from me while we were leaving the groomer. I was traumatized because she ran away! But she came back and I vowed that I would never put her through that again (or me).
I do all her “hair care” now and that makes us both happy.

  21. Awe Carly, I just cut my Yorkie and although smaller she has the same look. LOL Maine here I come. I hear tell we have still got 2 feet of snow up north. My hubby says it isn’t fair. I only seem to cut the dog’s hair before we go to Maine where it is always colder. Actually I do it so she won’t matte when I put her in the oh so mortifying sweaters and coats. Bad Mommy that I am.
Carly I hope you and your family enjoy Passover together. God Bless.

  22. Carly a little secret I learned from my yorkie:

When she is freshly cut, although embarrassed for a short while,

she starts to realize she can feel it better when she is pet.

All that hair can take away from the enjoyment of petting and

    massaging. :*)

  24. Carly, we used to have a poodle (pedigreed, descendent of prize winning show dogs) who thought he was a mutt. Every time he went to the groomers (and he got a nice cut, not that frilly poodle cut), he would come home, race out into the back yard and roll around in the grass over the septic tank!!! I guess he didn’t like the “smell” of the groomer’s shampoo, or something! It upset my mother to no end! Of course, I cried after his first cut because he went from my little fluffy ball of fur to this “strange” dog, but I eventually got used to his look. I don’t think he ever got used to going to the groomer!

    Comment by Lis — April 3, 2007 @ 12:59 pm

  25. We used to have a dog name Millie that was a poodle mix, her hair would get matted & nasty so when the weather started getting warmer I would take her to the groomer’s for a hair cut. Millie loved it, she would come home with attitude about how pretty she was! She would prance & preen & she felt so soft & nice when I would pet her. She was a lovely little dog. We aquired her, she followed my daughter one day & stayed. :love2:
Rhonda, we moved into a house once that had a flea problem left my former residents! This is an old time home remedy that worked well. We could not get rid of the fleas, we tried everything. Finally, someone gave us this idea: you get Eucalyptus oil, soak cotton balls with it & put them under your house. We tried it & it worked well, it is worth a try & you used to be able to get the oil at a pharmacy, we had to sign for it. I’ve forgotten why. It is much better than using harmful sprays that smell bad & that didn’t work anyway in our case.
Love the dog stories! Buddy, you are still cute & I know your family loves you.

  26. Poor Buddy. Here’s hoping that the weather gets warm REALLY quick where you’re at and it will be a good excuse. And I would find the Yellow Pages and help Carly to find you another pet groomer.

  27. People are always asking about whether I’m going to shave my dog because we live in Florida and she is v. fury — a Keeshond. But with this breed, from what I UNDERSTAND, you are absolutely NOT supposed to shave them. Their thick coat acts as an insulator — to keep them warm during winter and cool during summer. She’s v. high maintenance–we’ve been brushing her like fiends lately because she’s in one of her molting states–but all that fur gives her a snuggability factor of 20 out of 10.

    Comment by Kelly R. — April 3, 2007 @ 1:52 pm

  28. UNDERSTAND in that last paragraph should not have been captalized — little glitch — I didn’t mean to emphasize it and shout at everyone.

    Comment by Kelly R. — April 3, 2007 @ 1:53 pm

  29. Rhonda, Buddy has skin allergies too. Wheatens do. Did you try Derm Caps? It’s a vitamin that helps.

Isis, I think you are a smart dog. Buddy likes you and he really isn’t a dog person, he’s a people person. Liking mommy best is always smart.

I think it’s so sad that we do things that make our dogs cringe and hide. How funny is it, really that they know enough to do that?

    Comment by Carly — April 3, 2007 @ 2:16 pm

  30. Jolene, Buddy is a house dog too, which makes this even harder!

  31. Hey, Meisha. Thanks for feeling my pain. Someone has to!

No, Mommy is going to go back to that groomer but make sure she has a talk with that lady first. I really do like it there.

  32. Buddy LOVES the groomer and he loves going there. I hope this hasn’t traumatized him too badly!

Poor Millie. I never did understand the Poodle cut. Good that she didn’t have it!

    Comment by Carly — April 3, 2007 @ 2:20 pm

  33. My pooch has short hair and doesnt get hair cuts. BUT, my poor little baby hates baths. When you even mention the word to her she runs to the couch and lays on her back to get you to rub her tummy, she thinks shes done something bad. I just have to snuggle with my smumkin after she is dried off just to remind her how much I love her. She gets LOT of peanut butter when given a bath to remind her that she is a good pup and doing a wonderful job staying still.

    Comment by Emily — April 3, 2007 @ 6:31 pm

  34. Well, as my husband pointed out, we won’t have to worry about who will cut Buddy’s hair again for quite a long time.

    Comment by Carly — April 3, 2007 @ 7:54 pm

  35. He also pointed out that he looks just like himself now, short hair, takes forever to grow “blah blah blah” I dont think buddy wants to look like him though**

  36. Isis has a t-shirt that says Bad Hair Day. For a reason. When her hair gets to long, we put it into a Mohawk. Talk about giving us dirty looks. But she looked so cute at holloween with her witche’s hat on. I may have to try and post the pic one of these days- I am technically challanged.
