The Book is DONE & Giveaway
Yes, the book is done, done, done!
Yeah! It’s always such an euphoric feeling to finish a book and send it off, yet I know when that happens I have about a week of stuff to do that was neglected while I was spending every spare moment writing.
The laundry pile is HUGE, and there are probably enough dog and cat hairballs rolling around on the floor to make a pillow out of. I’m sure there are gross things growing in my refrigerator that needs to be cleaned out, and the dust has to be an inch thick on all my furniture. Oh, and I’m surprised that my electricity and phone haven’t been shut off, because somewhere I know there are a few unpaid utility bills just waiting to surprise me when I start cleaning and going through stuff. ![]()
I think the absolute worst thing is my office. (Yes, that picture is what I call “my office on deadline”. Pretty horrific, huh? I mean, my cat could be buried beneath all that and I’d never know!) Anyway, my office seems to be the “catch-all” during deadline, and everything gets dumped on my desk, credenza, floor – well, you get the picture. There are piles and piles of stuff all around my desk, and only my keyboard and monitor are visible. That’s all I need to write, so who cares about the rest of the space! But now I’m starting that cleaning process that for me, comes after finishing a book. In fact, I can’t start the next book until everything is clean and organized again, though I know over the course of weeks and months that I’m writing it’ll all pile up again. It’s a vicious cycle, but one I’ve grown used to. And, thank God, my husband has come to expect this, as well – and accepts it as part of the writing process. ![]()
Now, the good part is, while cleaning my office, I came across five ARC’s of BAD BOYS WITH RED ROSES, my May 2007 Brava anthology. For those of you who don’t know what an ARC is, it’s an “Advanced Reading Copy”, that is sent to booksellers and reviewers for advanced reading and reviewing. It’s a plain covered book, with uncorrected page proofs inside – meaning, any mistakes I might have made, or the editor might have made, haven’t been corrected yet. But, they do this months ahead of the book being released, before any changes can be made to the manuscript, to start a “buzz” about the book.
Anyway, like I said, I have FIVE of them, and I’d like to give them away here, to our loyal blog
readers. The book won’t be in stores for another month, so this is your chance to get a sneak peek of my story before anyone else gets the chance to read it! The only thing is, like I said, the cover is plain, and the pages inside are uncorrected and there might be a few mistakes here and there. (In the picture, you will receive the book on the right – without a hunky cover) But hey, it’s a FREE book, so who cares? Well, if you do care, then you don’t have to enter this giveaway and you can wait for the actual book to hit the stores, LOL!
All you have to do to be eligible to win is post anything today and I will draw five winners late tonight. The winners will then be posted at the END of Julie’s blog tomorrow, so be sure to check back to see if you’ve won!

Congratulations on finishing your book! My house is looking pretty bad right now and I have no excuse.

Yay on finishing the book, Janelle! I’m with Maureen - I hate cleaning yet there’s no reason I shouldn’t be. I wish I was one of those people who cleanred with they were stressed. I don’t get stressed too often, but hey, at least I’d clean from time to time LOL.

Congrats on a new book!

)! Bad Boys with Red Roses looks fabulous! I can’t wait to read it.

Okay, I know there is a huge difference between writing a book and doing taxes. But your desk looks like mine did up until last night. I finished my last tax return and now have everything packed up and ready to return to the lucky owner. LOL!!
Congrats on finishing your new book….is this new book the one you where you are trying your hand at a new genre?
Good luck everyone.

Thank you for validating my claim that I’m not the only one who “loses” their desk from time to time. I work the same way. Everything gets dropped on my desk until I’m ready to “deal” with it (usually around the time the stacks of paper begin to fall over onto the floor and I can no longer find my chair)
Good luck on tackling your clean up. Love the title of your book!
Comment by Dayle — March 28, 2007 @ 8:37 am
Congrats on finishing the book!!! I spent all day Saturday cleaning my house, so I wish you luck. I had been moved things from room to room for too long and it took all day to get everything how I like it again.
Comment by Liza — March 28, 2007 @ 8:42 am
Congrats on finishing your book! It is hard to keep a house clean, especially if you have something more important to do like write your book. I dread cleaning the house, but it looks so much better clean and clutter free. Oh well good luck on cleaning.
Comment by Mary — March 28, 2007 @ 8:43 am
Congrats on finishing your book.
Thanks for sharing the picture of your office. My desk looks so much like that
Last night I was moving things to the floor so that I could spread out the next phase of stuff

Congrats on getting the book done!
That looks like my space before I get the urge to clean it up, and I am one of those who really do not have a good excuse so I won’t even try! Can’t wait to get my hands on the book either way!
Comment by Shannon T. — March 28, 2007 @ 9:09 am
Janelle, I do the same thing. Everything piles up to the point that, after I finish the book and look around, I think I’m going to need to rent a backhoe to clean it all out again. Like yours, my dh seems to have accepted it.
Comment by Rhonda Nelson — March 28, 2007 @ 9:20 am
Congrats on the book Janelle! Hope to get lucky with your giveaway!
Comment by Michelle — March 28, 2007 @ 9:23 am
Congrats on finishing the book! Yes, I know that feeling. It’s one of the best. I always tell myself I’m going to take a break when I finish. In my mind, I’m envisioning several weeks off, maybe a month of no book thoughts whatsoever. Just reading other people’s stuff, relaxing and enjoying the family. I usually last about 3 days before an idea pops in my head and my break is over.
But, I’ve got to ask…How can you write in the clutter? I actually wish I could. For my mind to stay creative (at home and at the office) I can’t have a smidgen of anything out of place. Not even a crooked picture on the wall. I’ve got one in-basket that holds miscellaneous clutter and that’s it. People tease me about it, but seriously, I get anxious and uptight if I’m in the midst of piles of stuff. I can’t think straight, worrying about what’s in there that I’m forgetting. I guess that’s part blessing/part curse.
Comment by Lori Borrill — March 28, 2007 @ 9:24 am
I’m a clutter writer too. ONly difference is I do a cleaning monthly and immediately watch it pile up again but getting to the end of the book is always the worst when it comes to mess. Too funny. Love pics like this.
Comment by Carly — March 28, 2007 @ 9:26 am
Yay, congrats on finishing!
What a satisfying feeling that must be. And an ARC, how cool. I read an article in RWR about them, and what should be done with all of them, but I’ve never seen one. I had wondered about the cover too, so thanks for the pics and explaining it.
I think someone else asked this, but which book did you just finish? Is it Joel’s story? and when will it be out (his story)?
BTW - Julie/Leslie - I read “Private Lessons” and “Night Whispers” over the weekend and loved both of them!
Comment by Jodie — March 28, 2007 @ 9:47 am

Congrats on finishing the book. I wouln’t mind to read an ARC, your writting is so good that I wouldn’t notice mistypes. You developed your characters so well that I don’t think that I need a picture to imagine a Hunk-Sexy hero.

You all have been so busy chatting this morning, and here I am, finally checking in, LOL. The nice thing about not being on a tight deadline is sleeping in
Thanks everyone for the “Congrats” on finishing the book. It’s a relief, I tell ya! I have about another week before I have to jump into the next book, though, so I’m trying to enough the down time while getting things cleaned up!
Dayle — I’m glad I’m not the only one that works with piles of stuff around me, LOL! It gets so bad sometimes that when my cat tries to jump onto my desk, she makes the attempt, then everyone comes crashing down on her and she BOLTS back out of the office with a
kind of look on her face!
Nina — I’m right there with you. I don’t want to take that chance either, LOL. Or at least not until it’s absolutely necessary!
Rhonda — I think it’s the way of most writers. The office becomes our cave until the book is done.
Lori — I used to be that way, too. Then I had kids and they shot that need to have “everything in its place” straight to hell. So, working among clutter has become a necessity!
Comment by Janelle — March 28, 2007 @ 10:51 am
Jodie — Yes, I JUST finished Joel’s story - BORN TO BE WILDE. It will be out in September! I have the cover and it’s GORGEOUS, and I’ll probably post it on an upcoming blog for you all to see!
Comment by Janelle — March 28, 2007 @ 10:53 am
Kelly — You asked if the book I just finished was one I wrote for a new genre. I think you’re thinking of Julie, who is writing a paranormal. Me, I stick with the sexy contemporary single titles. I’ve yet to stray.
Comment by Janelle — March 28, 2007 @ 10:55 am
Leslie/Bruce - I just read your latest comments on yesterday’s blog. Thanks for the info. Bruce. A quick funny story for you, Leslie.
My hair used to be down to my waist. I had wanted it cut for years but the girl who did my hair wouldn’t cut it. So, I went to a guy who cut my friend’s hair. I told him I wanted it short, up off my neck, over my ears short. He tentatively cut it into a bob.
I told him it was fine, but that I’d be back in 4 weeks and that I wanted it SHORT! He took a deep breath, went and smoked a cigerette and came back to cut it for the 2nd time that day. Short, the way I wanted it.
Half way through that cutting I told him that my husband really didn’t want me to get it cut, that he liked it long. At that point he asked me what my husband did and when I told him every ounce of color drained from his face. He stopped, went and smoked another cigerette and then got up the nerve to come back and finish.
That was about 8 years ago and he’s still alive and well!!!!! (And my hair is halfway down my back again!).

Jodie — that is a funny story. I just went through that exact same thing with my 16 year old daughter this past summer. Her hair was down to the middle of her back, and she wanted it cut SHORT — shorter than mine — and I was SURE she’d regret it. So, we went to our girl who has been cutting our hair for over 10 years, and I told her to cut it up to Danielle’s shoulders, which Bev did. My daughter was NOT happy, and two weeks later we were back, with her wanting it even shorter.
Well, needless to say it took three haircuts to get it as short as Danielle wanted it. I just thought the process would be so much easier for HER if we did it a little at a time so she could adjust to her hair getting shorter and shorter. But this is my daughter who doesn’t give a rip what anyone else thinks — she does things because she WANTS to, and has never done things because it’s in style or what everyone else does. And I absolutely LOVE that quality about her.
Anyways, her hair is short and spikey and absolutely adorable. She’s petite (I’m 5′8″, and she’s 5′4″
and she truly looks like a cute little pixie. The hair suits her so well, and I’ve learned that if she wants something to just let her do it, because she’s her own person. She loves the short hair (takes her five minutes in the morning to “mess up”, LOL!) and it suits her so well. She’s never once regretted cutting it so short.
Speaking of hair . . . what the heck is up with Sanjaya’s faux hawk on American Idol last night?

I wish there was a way to vote Sanjaya OFF of American Idol. It’s getting ridiculous. And I hate that good singers have gone home while he’s stayed. I’ll be screaming if he stays again another week!

Hi Janelle:
How do you manage to keep your office so neat? My office is so bad, I had to set up an eight foot table to hold some of the junk and now that surface is full too.
But I know when I clean it, it’ll take me weeks to find things again.
Congrats on finishing your book!
Take care…………Wayne
Comment by Wayne (aka Trybble) — March 28, 2007 @ 2:13 pm
Janelle - your daughter is lucky that she has your support and that you recognize she is her own person and allow her to do her own thing. Both of my boys are very independent and free-spirited. Sometimes it’s a great thing. Sometimes it’s not so great (especially when I’m telling them to do something important and they’re not listening).
But I just keep reminding myself that they will, someday, do great things because of that spirit and determination (what I now call hard-headed stubborness and strongwill!)
BTW - Aren’t there some lost Wilde cousins out there somewhere?!? I just love those guys. I read “Wilde Thing” and “Wild Side” again last week and they’re just as good the 2nd (and 3rd) time around as they were the first! Thank you for writing such great books and creating such great heros!!

I don’t want to talk about the state of my office. I will say that I can’t make it to deadline when it’s a mess. About 30 pages from teh end, I have to stop and clean. It’s procrastination!
Comment by Julie Leto — March 28, 2007 @ 9:28 pm
Wayne, if I had a 8 foot table in my office, it would undoubtedly be piled with even MORE junk. Or, at least the junk on the floor would have a place to go!
Comment by Janelle — March 28, 2007 @ 9:32 pm
Jodie — The bad news is, after Joel, there are no more Wilde stories left to write. The brothers and cousins all got their stories, and there aren’t any lost Wilde cousins out there.
The good news . . . in Joel’s story, BORN TO BE WILDE, he works with four of his ex-Marine buddies at a security firm, and I’m now writing THEIR stories. So, while you won’t be getting any more Wilde stories, you’ll definitely get some more hunky men and glimpses into the lives of the Wildes now that they’re all taken. The first book is going to be called WILD FOR HIM (No “e” in the Wilde).
Comment by Janelle — March 28, 2007 @ 9:35 pm
My desk always looks like that and I can’t blame it on a writing deadline. I could, however, blame it on my kids. You think I could get away with that excuse?
:
Anyway, congratulations on finishing the book.
