Well, I was going to write about make-up…

Julie Icon

But then Leslie and Carly had such fascinating posts this week, how could I possibly measure up?

Still…

You see, I have this very odd fascination with make-up. I realized this as I was packing for my trip last week to Laguna Beach and had to consolidate all the makeup I have into one manageable bag…a task I undertake before every trip. Trouble is, no matter how many times I consolidate, I still have to tussle with a great big collection of eye shadows, lips sticks, lip pencils, brushes, etc. I’m a makeup junkie. Estee Lauder is my dealer.

But here’s the funny thing–I hardly EVER wear the stuff.

I knew I’d need it for this trip because the journey was on behalf of my husband’s company. If I have to be around work people, I do the full warpaint thing. Okay, one day I fudged and didn’t wear base/foundation. Hey, I was hanging out by the pool. Can’t go overboard.

The rest of the time, I had the full regalia of color. As little as I wear the stuff during my normal life, I love applying it. I think it’s the artist in me. (Yes, I used to draw and paint…but I was never very good, so I dropped it.) Anyway, I love watching makeover shows and going and having my makeup done by professionals so I can learn all the tricks that really transform me. I mean, if you look the same with makeup and without, then what’s the point?!

I’m lucky that Carly shares my love of makeup, even though she won’t leave the house without looking fabulous while 99% of the time, I look like I just rolled out of bed. When we go on Plotmonkey retreats, we check out each other’s collections and write down colors and such. It’s very girly and very fun. Then I’ll go out and buy more stuff that I don’t need and likely won’t wear.

But I have to have it!

I mean, what if I’m finally getting dressed for some big to-do and I don’t have the precise shade of purple eye shadow BASE that I need for the fabulous purple eye shadow I just bought? And what if I’m wearing cool colors and all I have in my purse are warm lipsticks? Isn’t this a reason for a major upheaval? I have to avoid it. Have to, have to. I mean, this sort of crisis sends me straight to Macy’s.

Okay, I’m sort of kidding. Sort of.

My husband says I wear too much makeup…but I think that’s only because I take so long to put it on. Trust me, he’d faint dead away if I tried to go to church without make-up on. It’s the one time a week you can count on seeing me look like I’m not dead. Even at school, if I wear makeup, the other moms comment on it. They ask me where I’ve been or where I’m going because they know some special occasion must be afoot. I get more compliments at school before and after I go to funerals. Isn’t that sad?

But I have to say, I was always this way with makeup, even back when I had to wear it every day. Although, my poor students who had me first period. I’m not a morning person. Chances are, all they saw was base. I did the rest of my makeup during homeroom. Did I mention I was a teacher then and not a student? Needless to say, none of my female students got demerits from me for putting on makeup during homeroom.

My obsession with makeup is a lot like my need to buy books. I buy entirely more than I will ever read and I can’t go into a bookstore without a paperback charged to the Am Ex before I leave. And if freebies are involved? Well, that’s all she wrote. No one can go hog wild over a “free gift with purchase” from Estee Lauder like I can. Hell, I fall for the “purchase with purchase.” It’s a sickness. It really is.

But you know what? My eyeshadow will always either coordinate with what I’m wearing or with my eye color (hazel.) My blush will always be bronzer. My lips will usually be lined and the color filled and glossed…unless it’s after I’ve eaten, then all bets are off. See, I’m really good at putting on the makeup, but I nearly always forget to touch it up.

It’s like I’m half girly-girl and half obsessive-compulsive.

So, anyone out there that shares my weird love of warpaint? Or is there something else that you simply must buy even if you will rarely use it and already have too much of it anyway?

  1. All I can say, is looking at those lipsticks give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. I like those brown/pink shades. Love to shop for lipsticks. I esp like Revlon, Maybelline and Cover Girl. Hate lipstick that have a flavor or leave an odd taste on your lips. CG and Maybelline have no taste; Revlon has a nice taste - cant describe it, but I like it. Like all 3 of those brands.

    Happy Hump Day!

  2. Laura Mercier brand lipstick rocks.
You can so believe I will be back later with a longer makeup post!

  3. I used to love not wearing makeup–just get a tan in the summer and wear nothing but mascara and lipstick. Can’t do that anymore–I have red and brown splotches and have to wear foundation.

I do love Estee Lauder, Julie, and wear it exclusively, but I’m not quite as worried about the colors and warm/cool shades as you. But you and Carly did convince me to try searching out my favorite shade of lipstick on eBay…and I found it!! Woohoo!

  4. I love makeup although on Saturdays I tend to not put it on even though I will be out running errands. For some reason when I’m out running errands early on a Saturday morning makeup is not on the agenda. Unless I’m going to get my hair done…then it’s the full makeup deal.

I love Lancome and even when I don’t need anything I have to go and buy something when they have their buy something and get something going on. I can however put on my makeup in about 10 minutes. I’ve done the same thing for so long now that it’s kinda second nature. I do love to change the shades to match but I’m more into changing to match the season then anything else.

I’ve bought some stuff from Sephora through work (HSN) and everything has been great. Now that we have the Sephora line I think that I’ll have to get yet another makeup bag to hold all the new stuff though

Love the post Julie except now I think I’ll have to run out at lunch and buy something.

  5. I have always loved to wear make up. I have two younger sisters who both have two children. My dh, daughter and I went away with all of them and their respective husbands last summer. Neither of my sisters wear make up and one of my nieces would come into my room every morning without fail and ask me if she could watch me put on my makeup. LOL! My sister keeps telling her she doesn’t wear it because she is beautiful without it. Which I know is a slight dig at me, but hey…you never know when you might run into someone from Nickelback or Bon Jovi. LMAO!

  6. What, no controvesy?!

I never wore makup until I became a Mary Kay consultant. Then it sortof became a requirement. Now, as a stay at home mom - I never wear makeup. Well, I too have sun spots from too much baking, so I do always have on foundation, but very seldom do I go fo the eyes and lips.

My downfall is books. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m avoiding B&N because of the TBR pile and my guilt at adding to it. But I KNOW if I’m in a bookstore I won’t be walking out empty handed. I know if I go near the bookstore I’ll have to go in it. And then I won’t walk out empty handed!

But there are worse things, right?

  7. I don’t really wear makeup that often, in fact I usually only wear it if I’m going out at night with my friends. That being said, I have 2 drawers of makeup. You would think I owned stock in Clinique I have so much. I’m such a sucker for the free gift with purchase(or Bonus Time as Clinique says), that I go buy something just to get the free stuff. I do love lipsticks and have so many that I couldn’t wear them all in my lifetime. Good to know it’s not just me.

  8. I have an addiction to MAC cosmetics. I get giddy just walking into the department at my Dillard’s. I have every shade of eye shadow, from lime green to glitter silver. Do I wear lime green eye shadow? Uh, no. But it’s such a cool color. I have every shade of bronzer. And then there’s the bronzer blush. And the bronzer powder, not to be confused with the regular powder. I don’t go for the makeovers because I like to do things myself (I have all this makeup and I seem to wear the same shades over and over). I even have lime green lipstick. I feel totally cool. I think that’s part of the obsession . . . I get to feel trendy and hold onto my youth just a little bit longer by shopping at the hot, hip MAC counter. And they play the coolest music. And put everything in the coolest bags. Just talking about it makes me want to head to the mall. Unfortunately, I’m in deadline hell and am chained to the computer. But another month and I’m free!!!!!!

  9. The older I get, the less makeup I wear. For some reason, it’s just not looking right on me anymore, and my greatest fear is ending up like one of those old ladies with wrinkly lips who still puts on the bright red stuff even though within the hour it looks more like an earthquake on a richter scale than something hot and sexy.

Or in my age, am I just getting lazy?

    Hmmm…lazy is a definite possibility.

  10. I love the Bare Escentuals stuff. (Discovered it last year.) I feel positively glam in the metallic gold eyeshadow. :-) ) Like Julie, I don’t usually wear it through the week. I’ve got to be going somewhere important to go to the trouble.

    Comment by Rhonda Nelson — March 21, 2007 @ 9:40 am

  11. I am with Lori. Hubby likes me to wear more makeup, but I don’t really have the time, sometimes. I do adore lip gloss. Did you know that Prescriptives allows you to make your own lip gloss (you can choose everything from colors to flavors to sheen). It was so much fun!

  12. I used to — about a year ago — never wear makeup. Ever. Then I went to get my publicity shots and the photographer was like, “Where is your makeup?” and I didn’t have any and I was really embarrassed. So I bought some. And I put it on when I went on TV that summer. And then since I had all this makeup (and wow, is it expensive to buy a whole face full of makeup) I started wearing it on occassion. It’s so weird to see pictures of me with makeup on. It does indeed change things.

I love eyeliner though. Always have. Are there classes somewhere that will teach me to put on eyeliner? Because I love it and I wish I knew better how to wear it.

    Anyone want to teach me?

  13. Oh moses…I am the same way but with books. I can NOT go in a book store without buying at least one book. I mostly go to borders because I have their rewards card which gets me tons of savings, but it only promotes me to spend more. Dang those people. And you know whats funny, this obsession didnt happen till the last year and a half. I used to HATE reading. I mean I loathed it. I always had trouble in school, me and reading were like cake and onions:thumbsdown:. But then my cousin gave me a romance novel and I fell madly in love with the characters and have since then been on a path of destruction at the book stores buying romance novels right and left. I will even go out of my way to drive to a books store that is an hour away just to get a book that they didnt have at the store near me. I cant wait to order it…that takes too long. I’ll die of anticipation.

As for me an makeup, meh, i never got along with the stuff. I grew up part tom-boy part girly-girl. I tend to be lazy when it comes to putting all of it on and I especially HATE taking it all of at the end of the day. I wear the basics: eye liner, mascara, and blush. Thats it. I’m okay with my natural looks so I dont cake anything on. Which is good cause I would probably drive myself in sane taking it all off every night. I’m very much like you when it comes to packing for trips though I have issues with my cloths. How am I supposed to know what I am going to feel like wearing each day. :lightbulb:I need a marry poppins bag so I can stow my whole closet in it when I leave. For one week, I usually pack for three. I could never plan the night before what I was going to wear. My hair has a mind of its own and what one day I would look good in one shirt, the next day I may not because my hair is doing something totally different. My friends think I’m wack:biteme:…but I blame it on the polish in me (its an inside joke). So I cant just pack a weeks worth of close because what if one day, I dont look good in any of the cloths I brought…well then I’m not leaving the house at ALL!! Granted, I probably dont look as horrible as I think but our brains play tricks on us. Oh well, I guess we all learn to deal with our crazy ways. Glad to know I’m not the only one with weird quirks.

  14. Diana, I’ll teach you! But you just have to watch me do it. While I love putting on makeup, I suck at putting it on other people. I also can’t blow dry anyone else’s hair…much to my daughter’s chagrin. Maybe I need to go to beauty school and learn how to do it all backwards!

    Comment by Julie Leto — March 21, 2007 @ 10:53 am

  15. Oh, Emily…don’t get me (or my husband!) started on my way of packing…he keeps hovering over my suitcase saying, “we’re only going to be gone four days, remember?” But how am I supposed to know what I feel like wearing two days from now? And what if it rains? Or gets suddenly cold? Choices. It’s all about choices.

I don’t know where I got that from…my mother packed for two weeks in Italy in one carry-on bag. ONE! And this is a woman who is always impeccably dressed (with makeup!) and has her hair done twice a week. I swear she had her clothes shipped ahead of time and simply wouldn’t admit it.

  18. I used to never wear makeup….until I became a Mary Kay consultant. Now I love it! I really like the way the women love their “new” looks.

But for me….I always buy books, doesn’t matter what store I’m at. And the other thing is pink trinkets. If it is PINK and cute I am so buying it.

But now that I’m writing, I realized I also buy alot of cleaning products. I never use them, I never install them, like my Mr. Bubbles shower thing and my new toilet cleaner that goes in the tank. But I buy them and forget where I pu them…….I really do need to get organized.

    Have a super day.

  19. I have this weird addiction to nail polish. I can’t walk by a cosmetics counter without buying nail polish. I now have a seperate wall cabinet just for NAIL POLISH! I think I have a problem. I come home with a color that I really like only to discover the reason that I like it. I already have it! I quit smoking 4 years ago so I like to think that I substituted the habit with nail polish and food(which sucks!) Oh, did I mention that my toes like great.

  20. OK I’m so happy to be back to post. I’ve spent the last three days knee deep in SASE’s for people who sent them to get the goodies If you missed it: http://www.plotmonkeys.com/364/carlys-special-for-plotmonkeys-news-and-giveaway/

And now I can talk about my favorite thing. Makeup. First, I’ve been wearing makeup since I was 13. I want to say that I probably started with Clinique b/c my mom was one of those, “it has to be real makeup and good for your skin” people, something I pass on to my girls. But who’s to say what’s a real brand anyway, LOL. My first REAL MAKEOVER was Estee Lauder, hear that Julie? Light lavender sparkly in a tube with a wand eyeshadow. I’ll never forget it!

At any rate, in my linen closet is a shopping bag of makeup. Colors and colors of things I bought, don’t like, but might someday use. And that never stops me from buy new every time I go into a department store or Sephora’s.

You all also know by now that I change my hair color often, and those of you who color know that it doesn’t always come out the same, especially reds. So each time I get my hair done, what do I realize? My makeup is “off”. My face doesn’t look “quite right” and back to the store I go for more makeup.

Like Kim, (who is also one of the most gorgeous people I know) I end up in mostly the same things … and I do go back to the deep purples because I like it best with my coloring. And I only wear Clinique eye liners because I have bad, itchy, dry, can’t wear contact lenses anymore, eyes. So I think that I may do an eyeglass blog soon.

What I was getting at was that you need to do your eyemakeup so you can see it with your glasses. I recently bought funky glasses with black rims. LOVE them. Of course, that meant a trip back to the store for makeup.

Julie, is the most gorgeous makeuped person. When she does it, I’m always in awe. I wish she lived here to do my makeup every day because hers is gorgeous and never looks the same when I try to duplicate it after I’ve seen her. She may not wear makeup daily, but when she does, WATCH OUT!

I don’t leave the house without it, as Julie said. NORMALLY. But today because Julie made that comment, I woke up with a cold and too tired to shower yet, and so I drove my daughter to school and had to go in and make a payment somewhere, WITH NO MAKEUP and UNSHOWERED and MY HAIR UNDONE. For those of you close to me, you know this is quite traumatizing for me.

I love makeup because it absolutely makes me feel like I LIKE ME. Silly but there you go.

Told you I love this topic. Could have been MY blog!

  21. What I love in makeup:
DON’T FORGET TO MOISTURIZE FIRST and then:
    1. Foundation - must even my skin tone - I’m freckled - Laura Mercier - I mix a light and dark shade
    2. Eye shadow base - Lancome Ombre Perfecteur
    3. Laura Mercier eye shadow (or Clinique) - shimmery pink all over, lavender in the crease; black/brown liner or navy liner always Clinique liner - and RARELY do I wear mascara. I need it, but I hate it.
    4. Concealer under the eyes = mine are BLACK - laura mercier and clinique
    5. lip liner and lipstick - Laura Mercier or Clinique CS

HOWEVER iF Julie ever takes me shopping to Estee Lauder, I can see buying an entire face of makeup at her say so and suggestions!

Like any of you cared or asked about this from me.

  22. Hi Julie!

Those of you who have met, know I really don’t wear that much if any makeup. But I have started wearing it some now. They recently put a Sephora in our store, and I have had 2 makeovers already (one of the girls uses me as her personal guinea pig. ) and I really like the stuff. It doesn’t feel like I am wearing anything. Sephora is expensive so I only have bought concealer and eye shadow so far, but will be buying the foundation and blusher they used on me too.

  24. I would LOVE to go makeup shopping with you, Carly! You’re so sweet with all your compliments. I know about the eyeglasses, too, since I wear them. I do go a little nuts on my eyes simply so they’ll be seen. While my eyes are just hazel, I really like the color. I’ve found that a combination of lavendar and green eyeshadows with a wine colored liner really brings out the green in my eyes. Figured it out when Almay did a collection for green eyes…but I adapted it using Estee Lauder, LOL!

I’m going to have to try this Sephora and Laura Mercier. I’m loyal to Estee because like Carly, I’m allergic to a lot of eye makeup. BTW, my obsession with makeup started when my SIL started selling Mary Kay! And I’d still be using it if I wasn’t such a last minute shopper. I was tired of having to chase down a salesperson when I just wanted to run to the mall and get what I needed (clearly AFTER my SIL stopped selling!)

I’m afraid if I find a new manufacturer, I’ll have to buy everything all over again!

And talking of skin care…my miracle find to date is by Dermatologica, which you can buy in salons and on the Internet. It’s a rice-based gentle facial scrub that has cleared up my acne (yes, at 40+, I have acne!) like nothing else has. It’s miracle stuff and gentle enough to use everyday!

  27. I think one of the reasons I don’t wear makeup is because I don’t really know how to apply makeup correctly. I do have to admit that I would rather spend any extra money I have on books instead of makeup, but I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet pretty soon and learn how to apply my makeup. I was never the super girly girl growing up(but did fight to get to wear makeup at 13), so it’s never been a big deal to me. As I get older(almost 36), I’m starting to need something…just not sure what.

  28. Oh great subject because I absolutely love makeup! I have worn it ever since high school and it is now 40 years later. I can not go anywhere without lipstick, blush, and foundation on. I usually always put on eye makeup but lately on have been forgoing mascara. I just use an eye pencil to line my eyes and then put on shadow using a brush.

My favorite makeup right now is Benefit. I love the powdered self tanner. Great for a fake tan! I have some other stuff by them also. It might be more expensive than others but it sure does last long time! I have oily, sensitive skin so it is perfect for me. I use Maybellines shine free foundation, Neutrogena’s powdered compact for problem skin, and a lot of different blushes and eye shadows.

Oh and I discoved a new lipgloss that I love by Milani. It smells really good, doesn’t taste waxy, and they have beautiful colors.

My favorite eye shadow right now is dark gray. Love it! What are everybody elses favorite colors?

  29. Liza, honestly, go to the counters at the department store and have them do your makeup for free. Be clear that you haven’t worn a lot of makeup most of your life, so they need to go for a natural look. Then see what you like. If they have a specialist coming in, sign up! I learn the most from them.

Michele, for eye color, I’m favoring lilacs for cool and coppers for warm. They go the best with my coloring and my hair!

I am lazy. I am also a Maybelline/Cover Girl girl. I always use moisturizer and never leave without mascara on. Since I am basically a red head type, I have never suntanned, so I don’t have blotches and wrinkles which makes me very, very happy. Bags under the eyes are another story, so now I am putting on foundation at 5 in the morning and a little blush. I have a drawer full of eye shadows and lipsticks- I wear eyeliner on occasion and use chapstick, maybe with a tint. Go figure.

Books and shoes are a whole nother story. I came home with the ARC for SEP’s new one today. And I get to keep it!!:thumbsup2:

  36. What a fun post, Julie!

Well, I used to be just like Carly, where I couldn’t leave the house without make-up, but in the past five years, I’ve been going without, unless I know I’m going somewhere and I need to look ALIVE.

But I still love buying make-up — it’s all those colors and shades and all the ways you can mix them and match them. ::sigh:: On our last plotmonkey retreat Carly and I went into a Sephora and I bought over $100 of new Stila eyeshadows. They were rich and gorgeous and I just wanted to play with them all! Have I used them? A few. As much as I love buying make-up, I seem to always go back to the same ‘ol, same ‘ol. Maybe because it’s easy and familiar.

As for brand, I’m all over the place — really. Foundation and concealer is MAC, face foundation powder is Merle Norman, eye shadow, brows, & blush are MAC, eye liner is “Flirt” from the Kohl’s department store, mascara is Loreal, and lipstick is Estee Lauder. That’s my daily face make-up. If find something I like, I stick with it.

  40. Julie - thanks for the tip on Dermatologica. I’ll have to give it a try. The College where I work just started an esthetician course and they sell and promote the stuff (at good prices I’m told) We have a “Spa” on campus. (manicures, pedicures, artificial nails, facials, etc.) For some reason, I have yet to take advantage of it. Definitely worth a shot. I just turned 34 and am still battling acne. As for makeup, I generally just wear foundation and powder. I wear eyeliner and mascara on special occasions (too lazy to get up early and put it all on.)

I also use the Dermatalogica wipes that have witch hazel for those days when I’m not wearing makeup (most days!) and I just want to refresh my face and remove excess oils. It’s a great product, but the rice powder is a miracle! Do let me know if it works for you. I still can’t believe how fabulous it is.

And yes, you do need to start availing yourself of that spa! I mean…I’d get pedicures weekly if they were cheap!

Who mentioned nail polish? I don’t paint (or cut or file) my nails…it’s hopeless. But I love toenails and I love me some OPI!

  42. For me it is books and nail polish. I might be make-up if I didn’t fight with my contacts so much. But…I think I own every OPI three pack ever sold. I mean…it’s practically half price that way! And pedicures are my crack. I try to do them myself, but it is just not the same. Plus…pedis are great because you can be WILD with toe color. Mine are green with gold sparkles right now…GO DUCKS! The nails? French manicure in Sally Hansen Ideal. Yes, I know that. I have a signature nail for each book. Now THAT is TMI!

  43. The thing I like about Sephora is that it doesn’t feel like your wearing anything, plus I get discount there too.

I did my hair last week, went for a light ash blonde look, but it just lightened my hair a little but put in reddish highlights which I like. I seriously need a haircut though. Now that it is getting a little warmer I may just get it next week.
