ALL I WANT TO DO IS EAT

Carly Icon

Did you ever notice that when you’re forbidden from doing something, you want to do it that much more? So much so that you can’t stop thinking about it? It becomes an obsession. It started as a “get healthy” thing. I was going to lose weight just because I was going on a low cholesterol diet. It happened of necessity at first. And the exercise was going well. Well, going well for me, which meant I was doing the treadmill thing a few times a week. Then something bad happened. Something self-defeating.

First, after three months of the good food, my cholesterol came back with no change. My LDL (the bad goopy stuff in my arteries) is bad. Thank you heredity. And of course, I began to feel like, then why am I bothering to do all these good things for my body? Well the answer :lightbulb:came to me after a week of wallowing in MnM’s and no exercise. (OK so I was in Aruba and who wants to be a good girl there?). The answer was simple: Imagine how bad my blood work and cholesterol and body would be without good food and exercise? It was time to go back to being good.

Except that I developed some bad habits  that I need you to help me break. Janelle already made me promise to up my fruit and vegetable intake and I will. I promise. Maybe by the time this posts, I already have. But that won’t solve the things that are affecting my waistline.

Thing 1 – The desire for sweets after every meal
Thing 2 – Instead of eating one 100 calorie pack, I eat two. Or more. At one time.
Thing 3 – When I bring my daughter her cup of cereal and water (no she’s not in prison) snack at night, I fill up a cup of Frosted Flakes for me too (and that’s not a measured cup it’s bigger)
Thing 4 – When I am home writing, I am hungrier than when I am out running errands and so I keep going to the fridge for food every hour. :wallbash:
Thing 5 – My lunches suck. Think big calorie cinammon raisin bagel and then the sweet thing craving and you get the picture.
Thing 6 – Can’t stop thinking about food. :wallbash:
Thing 7 - I really HATE exercise.

I need to say I bought new exercise clothes to up my desire to exercise. (I’m hiding from Janelle) but all that’s done is make me look sorta cute but still lacking in desire to get on the treadmill!

I need suggestions to stop these self-sabotaging THINGS. Can you help me? (And while you are posting to help poor pathetic me, care to share what self-sabotaging habits YOU have? Doesn’t have to be diet. Can be anything!)

  1. My biggest help in keeping my weight (somewhat) stable is water. I am more of a drinker than an eater, so I usually have several beverages at my desk at work - water, coffee, milk. And water is what I mostly drink. Not only is it good for you, but it also comes in flavors so it doesn’t have to have that “blah” taste, though I drink plain water too. Of course then I’m writing to the bathroom a lot, but at least I don’t feel (as) guilty.

    Good luck Carly!

  2. I have the hugest sweet tooth in the world, as well. Which is totally self-defeating. Frankly, I’ve been off the wagon of eating right lately and as of today I told myself I’m getting back on and eating right and exercising. I have found that one of the only ways to stop the craving for sugar is to go cold turkey for awhile with no sweets. Otherwise once you have one sweet thing, then you want another sweet thing, and another, until you’ve eaten a slice a cake, a mini package of cookies, tea with 3 tsps of sugar, some m&ms, etc., etc. Just as writing begets writing, sugar begets sugar.

Also, when I have a lot of nervous energy (esp. when I’m working on my writing a lot) I also find I want to keep eating. I keep gum on hand — all that chewing helps. Still has calories, but not nearly as many as what is waiting in the frig. It can also satisfy that craving for something sweet. And I agree about the water — sometimes when you think you’re hungry you’re actually just dehydrated.

    Good luck!

  3. Stacy, I ‘ve tried water but got lax with that too. Going to start drinking more water. I walked on the treadmill for 20 minutes today too.

Kelly, I tried going cold turkey once and I couldn’t handle it. I was like an addict in withdrawal. Headache, shaking, I swear I almost killed myself until my mom dragged me into a diner and made me order real food. Could be because it was like no carbs too, but I really do think it was the no sweets, sugar. I’m also very stubborn about my habits. :wallbash:

  4. I sympathize!!!! I am a huge junk food addict (sweets and chips) and I know how hard it is to deal with this sort of eating habit when you’re home all day. I go to the kitchen every hour when I break from writing and have to have sugar. I’ve tried cold turkey, but that just doesn’t work for me. I HAVE to have my sugar. So I eat sugar, just in very small portions. Also, I eat low fat sugar, meaning stuff like sugar babies and candy corn. Basically, I go through one bag of sugar babies a day (that’s 190 calories). I grab a few every time I go into the kitchen. This helps the sweet tooth. For the chips, I buy baked and actually count them out. Five chips every trip to the kitchen. And I drink diet Rock Star energy drinks. Not very tasty, but they help with metabolism and they help me to focus while I’m writing. I find that if I can make it until 4, I’m usually home free. Evenings are fast and crazy with the kids. But every day is a challenge. I know these are wierd tips, but they work for me. I’ve been the same size for the past ten years with only a 2-3 pound fluctuation every now and then. As for exercise, I do curves. I tried exercising at home, but I just wasn’t as committed. With Curves, the workout goes so fast that it’s over before I really start to hate it. I do it 3 times a week (unless I’m on a hellacious deadline and then I fudge). But it helps to drag my sorry butt out of the house. Good luck!!!

  5. Poor Carly,
Maybe when you get your daughter cereal, maybe you can pour yourself some Cheerios? I keep seeing on tv that Cheerios helps lower the bad cholestrol.
And I want to know who is sending this food to Carly??? No wonder her energy bars go uneaten, its because people are sneaking food in. tsk tsk gonna have to get my whip out.

  6. boy can i sympathize with you on this one.. after new years the school staff where i work started a biggest loser competition. I needed to lose weight anyway, and its been a big struggle, especially with 3 kids and a junk food junkie husband. My biggest fault is chocolate. I went cold turkey for about a month to try and knock the cravings. And lots and lots of water. When i want sweets now i reach for an apple, grapes, or sugar free jello cups with the fruit in them.. i also introduced back into my life the hundred calorie snack packs. the trick there is to just have one … and not every day. I also buy the baked chips for real cravings, and every once in a while i treat myself to a dove dark chocolate.. not very often but enough to keep myself from quitting. I have lost 8 pounds in the last 2 months… and i have a bit to go yet to reach my goal.. good luck with all the food issues.. i know how hard it is..
i had to just eliminate it from the house to begin with to get past the wanting cravings..

  7. I’ve had a tough couple of months and my diet has been horrible. My unhealthy addiction is sugar, also. I have found, though that I love soy cream at night with sprinkles and that satisfies. It’s so yummy. That’s my evening snack or a caffeine free diet coke (pathetic). I love ice water, so the cooler the better.

  8. You know the funny thing is that my kids’ friends, when they come over, say what happened? This used to be the junk food house! Now everything here is 100 cal or low fat. WE are SO much better. Yet it doesn’t come off of ME!

  9. I feel your pain Carly!! I’m in your shoes right now!! My biggest problem is wine. I love to have a glass of wine at the end of the day, which is sort of defeating the yogurt for breakfast and weight watchers for lunch.:wallbash: I miss the days when I could pretty much do and eat whatever I wanted.
I know you have said that you had problems with the cholesterol lowering med’s, but I have to tell you Carly, Zocor has done wonders for me, with very little side effects. I do try to watch what I eat, but like you it’s more heredity than anything else. Here are a few suggestions:
Choose Cheerios instead of frosted flakes (i like the ones with yogurt), try to keep cut up veggies in the fridge for afternoon snacking, I use light ranch dressing to kill the taste…lol Also, suger free jello or pudding made with low fat milk can do wonders for that sweet tooth.
Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up, just try to get back on track. When I have a bad food day, I try to remind myself that I’m getting healthy not just for me, but for my family, I want to be around to see my future grandkids, and enjoy retirement!
    Good Luck!

  10. Did I write this post? I’m amost certain I didn’t, but I could have. Sweets and portion control are my biggest downfalls. That and I HATE exercise. Unfortunately, I’ve got no suggestions for you but I can say I’ll be spending my lunch hour today reading all the wisdom generated here, and hoping someone has answers for us both. I’ve GOT to do something. I’m hoping to meet agents and new editors at National this year to pump an ST idea that’s been nagging to be written, and I know if I go looking like Humpty Dumpty, I’ll never have the confidence. Ugh, just thinking about it makes me want to reach for a Hershey bar.

  11. I’m a huge sugar addict and love all junk foods. I gave up all fast food for Lent(which is up in about 3 weeks), and that helps some. I buy the 100 cal snacks and try to not buy any sugary snacks. I drink water as much as possible everyday and limit my soft drink intake to 1 a day. I do eat some cereal at night, however not only are cheerios more filling than any other and they are best for lowering cholesterol. I think even the honey-nut and the yogurt ones are good for you too(still get a touch of sugar without all the extra fat and calories).

    Comment by Liza — March 19, 2007 @ 9:56 am

  12. Carly,

My doc explained sugar cravings to me. Sugar runs in a circle in your body. once you take a bite, you digest it, and you circle back around for more! It’s a never ending cycle.

I got on a bad sugar crave during my 36th week of pregnancy and packed on 5lbs in one week. a big no-no considering I had been doing excellent where my weight was concerned. This would be when I learned about the sugar circle.

So to break the sugar circle, I started feeding my sweet tooth natural sugar from fruits and such (even 100% juices). And I was left satisfied. (did I mention I also lost a pound in my 37th week when I broke the sugar off?) Also, white bread turns to sugar in your body, so switch to wheat. It’s actually more filling and I end up eating A LOT less if I eat a sandwhich on wheat.

And on a side note with water: If you aren’t getting enough, it’ll slow your metabolism (hm, sp?) down.

  13. Carly… Boy, can I relate! But I’m afraid you are asking the wrong gal… I’m eating a slice of cold pizza as I type this (washed down with Diet Coke, of course!). :wallbash:

I find inspiration in the comic posted today! That’s a wake up!

  14. Carly, I completely understand about the 100 calorie packs. They are so addictive. I tell myself it’s okay to eat more than one . . . I mean atleast I know exactly how many calories I am eating . . . right?

I find it hard to keep motivated to exercise. So, to ensure that I exercise somewhere between 3 and 4 times a week I will treat myself for the exercising (and no the treats are typically not food related).

It is always hard to make changes to your lifestyle. I wish everyone who is trying to make changes the best of luck!

  15. Kimberly, I was wondering how you like Curves? I was considering it, but after going to their website changed my mind. I’m not sure I can work out in a circle like that, and I’m sort of skeeved about using exercise equipment right after a sweaty woman just used it, they described the work out as a circle of activities that you switch after a certain amount of time, is there time to wipe down the equipment? Do I have the wrong impression?

    Comment by Tina Martinesi — March 19, 2007 @ 11:53 am

  16. I agree with drinking LOTS of water — it helps keep your metabolism running, but it also flushes out a lot of CRAP your body doesn’t need. I drink at least 8-10 glasses a day. Sometimes more. I don’t drink diet sodas anymore, either — just one coffee in the morning and water the rest of the day.

Carly: Fruit, fruit, fruit! You MUST incorporate fruit and veggies into your diet! And not just bananas, apples and oranges (which is what most people eat), but go for the fiber healthy berries: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries. Oh, and they’re low in fat and calories! When I’m being good (as I currently am ) I eat three servings of fruit AND vegetables a day. That definitely helps me not to overdo the snacking.

But man, those 100 calorie packs can be a killer, LOL! Everything is coming in 100 calorie packs, and I think they’ve taken over my cupboard! The trick is not to eat FIVE of them a day, Carly!

  17. OK I’m back. Had to do some writing before I replied to all these great posts!
Kim - I tried to do what you did - and the handful added up! Plus then I read that sugar accumulates around the middle which is the one place I can’t lose, so I figured, go with the 100 cal stuff. Janelle and I share food cross country and we’ve found amazing new things that way. Problem is like I said, I like it TOO much.

Barb - YOU SHOWED UP, HURRAY! I added Cheerios to my to buy list. Thank you. As for the closet, puhleeze, do you really think I eat that garbage you send under the door?

Jolene, GREAT job, losing the weight! I’m a chocolate addict too. It’s HARD not to have it. I’m a milk chocolate addict.

    Katie, what is soy cream?

Keri, for the sugar craving explanation I say :biteme: Just kidding. I just can’t live on fruit alone. I won’t. I feel like part of life is enjoying. OK I just like it. but like you, I’ve heard all that too and it’s true. IT’s just hard to cut things out. And with kids around, there just are going to be bad things. Not all good. And even if the kids were out of the house, I’d have to have something good … sigh.

Tina - I’m not a wine person. Never have been. I think the migraines account for that. Imagine if I had to add alcohol to the do not list! But I miss the old days too …. when nothing gathered anywhere.

Lori - maybe find someone to split the Hershey bar with. I find I say I’m going to have part not all but if it’s here I eat it but if I can pawn it off on the kids …

Wow, Liza, let us know how you do giving it up!

Oh, Lara, LOLOL Cold pizza and soda. YUM!

Stephanie, I really did buy the excercise clothes for a reason - My trainer said on days I don’t want to do anything but write, get up, shower and put on exercise clothes Then if I get my pages finished, or before I sit down to write, walk for 20 minutes. I did that today. So I wrote and I walked. So what if I didn’t sweat? I walked. Got the blood circulating. I say that has to count for something, right? Maybe???

I have a cardiologist appointment in April …

I started Curves on 9/11. I kid you not. I gave it up after awhile b/c I hated driving there and yes, the boredom got to me. I’m doing better at home when I keep at it. I’m on a new kick as of TODAY.

Keep the suggestions coming. I’m enjoying today!

  22. Chocolate will lure me to the computer. I love those, Teresa. But the peanut ones…my major downfall. And Smarties! And sour gummy bears. Oh, heck, promise me sweets and I’ll do anything.

I just saw your post about Richard Simmons. I want to Sweat with the Oldies! Do they make those on DVD?

Of course, I *could* pressure my husband into hooking up the VCR/DVD player that’s been sitting in a box for two months, LOL!

  23. Soy Cream (that’s what I call it) is ice cream made with soy milk. they have super yummy flavors (think Ben and Jerry’s type flavors). It has sugar, but I portion it out in a SMALL tea cup (I can’t overdo). Delish. I have to fight hubby not to eat it (he’ll eat it by the half gallon-full, if I let him). That’s my reward for being good

    Comment by katie — March 19, 2007 @ 1:34 pm

  24. Carly, your note to Janelle had me rolling in the floor!!! The sad thing is, she’s so right. I can’t stand fruit, can’t stand a whole lot of vegies so I’m with you there.

One thing that does work for me is World’s Finest Chcocolate Chocolate Covered Almonds. Almonds are good, right? I have a terrible sweet tooth and that is a huge weekness for me. I keep them up on the fridge so I have to really work to get to them. And I limit myself to 4 or 5 at a time, usually only after a meal to satisfy that sweet craving, then slide it far back out of reach again. A dumb game I play with myself but it works.

For the Curves question - no, you don’t have time to wipe the machine down. You switch every 2 minutes and you go from a machine to a mat for cardio then to the next machine. You do that 30 minutes, which if I remember right is 3X around the circle. I have lots of friends who have done it with great success. It didn’t work for me because I got bored too easily.

Good luck to everyone. Nice to know I’m not the only one who keeps getting bruises for falling off the wagon!

  27. You really don’t HAVE to wipe down the machines. They aren’t the type that accumulate a lot of sweat. And my Curves has a bottle of anti-bacterial over by the “lockers” so you can use that as often as you like.

I liked Curves but I haven’t been able to go because of their hours. Ours is closed from 11:30am until 3:30pm, which is when I would be most likely to go.

    Comment by Julie Leto — March 19, 2007 @ 3:01 pm

  28. It wasn’t too hard to stop eating fast food, the big deal is not to go back to old habits after Lent is over. I too tried Curves a couple of years ago. I liked it at first, but it got old fast and I was tired of having to workout after work. I’m best working out first thing in the morning. I get on my exercise bike every morning before work and every afternoon after work. I’m working up to 1 hour total a day. Not fun to do, but I have high cholesterol too and I’m not giving up red meat, so the exercise allows me to eat red meat. An idea to get fruit in your diet is to cover it with fat free cool whip…you can even buy the sugar free kind(I think it has splenda in it) and all you will taste is the cool whip.

    Comment by Liza — March 19, 2007 @ 3:10 pm

  29. Julie, I wonder if it is Curves policy to close in the middle of the day like that or if it’s up to the individual owners. The one here was the same way and I always thought it was really odd. Although, I do think the one here maybe opens back up at 1:30.

    Comment by Jodie — March 19, 2007 @ 3:29 pm

  30. So I guess now would be a bad time to fess up that I just bought a bag of Dove chocolates at the store, after having snarfed down a fast food lunch. :wallbash: I’ll freely admit.. I’m a “stress” eater. And the past 2 weeks have been killer, due to remodeling disasters. My pantry and fridge were stocked in advance with healthy snacks (yes I was semi-prepared for disaster! LoL) but today my little stress gremlins were chanting CHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE! and I caved. But on the up side I’m stretching each day, and 3 x a week I’m doing weights (Smart Women Stay Strong book). So yes i fell off the wagon today. I’m sure the repercussion was felt up and down the Eastern seaboard. But now that the gremlins have been appeased, it’s a grilled chicken salad for me tonight, and back to the stretching and weights tomorrow. And I gotta look into the Richard Simmons tapes. I loved those! So the moral of this confession–realize you might slip now and then, be kind enough to forgive yourself, and then get right back on track. We’re only human, but we’re also females doing 3 and 4 jobs at the same time. Who wouldn’t crack under that kinda stress! Climbing down now… Good luck Carly and everyone!

  33. Julie,
Might also want to stock up on lots of zip lok bags for your Pernigotti Black. I’ve discovered that drywall dust permeates everything, including cabinets, refrigerator, and rooms that are closed off! And I’m nibbling a Dove chocolate at the moment, cuz I just had the painters redo an entire room. The cream colored faux finish was to be ragged onto a deep gold wall. What I saw when i went down was sponged on snowflakes! ARGHHHH :wallbash: So in my nicest “let me not kill you now” voice I managed to convince them to repaint said room all over again. Thankfully, the error was their boss’s and not mine, cuz they weren’t real happy! I knew I should have taken that break before I started the new chapter! Good luck on your project!

  36. Why oh why is it so easy to gain weight & so hard to loose!! Life can be so unfair sometimes. My cholesterol is good, which I am thankful for. My oldest daughter has high cholesterol as did my Mom. Glad that so far mine is okay. I try to walk everyday. Right now that is a piece of cake as I am taking care of Max, a German shephard, while his people are on vacation. Once I’m in the habit it is easy. I love walking & right now there are flowers, trees & lots of things blooming & it is all Spring green & pretty in my corner of the world. I don’t drink soda but drink lots of water, tea sometimes & I have a weakness for Starbucks Mocha’s. I eat fruit everyday & usualy veggies also but I love them so not a problem for me. For fiber I eat raw almonds, love them. Sugar is one of my bad habits, chocolate, ice cream, cookies yum! I try keeping myself under control when it comes to the sweets. If it isn’t in the house you won’t eat it!! Also if your girls grow up with healthy eating habits they might escape having problems later in life.
That probably wasn’t a whole lot of help but it is the best I can do!!
Good luck Carly, Healthy isn’t always easy but it is worth the effort. :love2:

  37. Carly, I can sympathize with you. Six years ago, I found out I had diabetes, type II. At the time, my favorite snack was a big ol’ piece of birthday cake…and yes, I threatened to stab anyone with my fork if they took the roses. My favorite holiday was Valentine’s Day…all that chocolate calling out to me!! I weighed in at 238…definitely not a healthy weight for me. I started drinking more water. I’ve tried them all, and my favorite is Dasani. I just like the way it tastes when it’s ice cold. I started drinking a regular size before every meal, and got fuller faster. I still ate chocolate, but I eat it in the form of Kisses. One piece a day, maybe every other day. I’ve tried the sugar-free stuff out there now, and I’ve made the decision that if I’m going to eat chocolate, I want the real thing. Giving up fast food also helped. I have never been much of a veggie eater, but I eat salads more often now. Especially grilled chicken caesar salads.
I’m down to 160 now, and I wear about a size 12 or 14, depending on the manufacturer. The one thing I learned over the past 6 years is that the weight will not come off until I quit eating more calories that I’m going to burn in a day. I work at a doctor’s office and I’m constantly running.

Oh, and having your thyroid checked couldn’t hurt, either. Good luck!

Thanks, Donna. I can’t walk outside here yet, it’s COLD in NY!

Leslie, hugs on the Diabetes. Sounds like you have a system that works for you though! I did try the thyroid thing. I convinced myself that was it. That’s when I found out it was the cholesterol meds I was on m aking me feel sluggish and exhausted. The extra weight was all me.

    More water
    Cheerios instead of Frosted Flakes
Allowing myself SOME degree of leeway because that’s who I am and what I need
If I fall off, get right back on but don’t beat myself up!
Richard Simmons - I hope to try it when it arrives.
    HANGING OUT HERE A LOT!

  40. I personally love fruit, but don’t always have it on hand. I am one of those wierd people that love red grapefruit. I gave some to my nephew yesterday at Country Buffet, took him and Nataia for breakfast and he liked it too.

Now if you had eaten the crap I send under the door you wouldn’t be in this predicament.

  50. You wanna’ hear about self sabotage??? :wallbash: I was doing really well. I had lost 20 lbs, but had been stuck there for a few months and it wasn’t budging! I was getting up at 5AM every morning and going to the gym for an hour, too! So, along about Memorial Day, I went to my nephew’s graduation and to see my mom. The last totally stressed me out and the situation lasted for 3 months, and now it still nags (big family problem). So STRESS is my downfall. I am a total stress eater. It’s not that I eat so much, as what I crave - ice cream, cookies, some chocolate, but more the and cookie type thing. Let’s just say, I gained it all back in 6 weeks! Then, I couldn’t get myself back into the routine. I think Winter came along. Yea, that’s it. Winter - Seasonal Defective Disorder… I like it!

Well, my doctor yelled at me (ok, maybe he didn’t raise his voice, but it felt like it). How can they make you feel so ashamed of yourself I wonder??? The SDD didn’t fly for him either.

So, I totally understand your issues. Good thing is though, I have lost 14 of the 20 since mid-January. Too bad the shape isn’t the same as I shrink this time…

  52. Too funny! You know, you can always count on kids to keep ya humble. At least in my house that’s the way it works!

  53. First of all our daughter’s are the exact same age and even share the same birthday !! Very cool.

But anyway, water and walking are the best thing to do. If it’s cold outside then bundle up and do it anyway. I did it all winter and now I’m used to it and I do it everyday. And remember you want to do a life style change not just a diet to lose a few pounds so do some stuff that you can LIVE with.

  54. I am so sorry I missed this topic today!! I sabatoge myself constantly. I finally bought some decent cookbooks, set Heather down with them and told her to mark the recipies that sounded good to her. She is a picky eater so I hoped that if she choose them, I would cook better meals. So far it is working

But it is the snacking that kills me. I have gone back to eating 5 small meals a day instead of the usual 3 and sneaking stuff. Lots of ice water too. It has to be really cold. I also quit sitting at the puter all day. I found I was eating more that way then getting exercise. Go figure. So thankfully, the snow has kept me outside shoveling and blowing.

Now I need to get on the cleaning and re-organizing of this house from hell!!That should keep me away.

AND QUIT THE DANGED SNACKING ALL THE TIME. JUST CAUSE YOU CAN DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD!! (those 100 calorie packs are just plain dangerous. Especially the Oreo ones!!!)

  55. This is so late, but I was working all day yesterday and couldn’t get back to the conversation!!!

ABOUT CURVES: I love it because it goes so fast that I’m done before I have time to dread it. I HATE to exercise. I mean, really and truly HATE it. But you’re switching every thirty seconds at Curves so before I can start to hate, I’m moving on. That’s why I really love it. Also, my Curves is open at 6 a.m. and stays open until 8 pm. I can drop by any time, on the way to pick up my boy at pre-school, or early in the morning. I know it’s a franchise and they are individually owned, which means that each probably keeps their own hours. But I live in the country and there are actually two within my driving range (that is, 30 minutes from me), so maybe you could find a different one, Julie? Also, I don’t know about sweaty machines, but I pick up after the kids all day, so needless to say, nothing scares me. I wipe up after I’m done.

  56. Water, water, and more water.

Also, I’ve noticed that if I eat more during the day–regular meals with small, light, snacks, like hard cheese, pickles, yogurt, or a few low-fat pretzels in between–I’m a lot less hungry in the evening. (This is my DAILY challenge. If I don’t I go home ravenous and pig out on anything crunchy I can find!)

To satisfy my sweet tooth, I allow myself no more than half a bar of Hershey’s Special Dark chocolate bar. Yummy. Has sugar and fat yes, but knocks the edge off without knocking me off diet. Can’t do this everyday but a couple of times a week is not bad.

Small salad before lunch and again before dinner. About the size of a fast-food side salad. The fiber helps fill you up.

Finally, and this may sound crazy, but when I had gestatational diabetes, I learned that what I put in my mouth last during a meal made a difference. Maybe it’s psychological but it was months before I noticed it. If the last thing in my mouth is carbs — rice, vegetables, sweet potato, whatever–my craving for sweets and other carbs would be stronger than if I saved a small portion of my protein to be my last bite.

Hang in there! Tell yourself you can win and you will win. You will!

  57. Carly said: “That’s when I found out it was the cholesterol meds I was on making me feel sluggish and exhausted. The extra weight was all me.”

The extra weight is all me, too, (around the middle, “When is your baby due?” I’m 50 freakin’ years old! ARGH!!, and not YET on cholesterol med’s. I have to take an a.m. combo of blood pressure, fluid, and, Ahem, ‘happy’ pills.

I’ve started eating flavored oatmeal (just one pack!) like banana bread, for breakfast, and if I have them, I add 2 of the Dark-contains-anti-oxidents-Hersey kisses in after micro’ing, and stir it all up.

Supper is changing effective this week to less red meat and more skinless chicken, turkey, pork. I love my mashed potatoes with gravy and angel hair pasta - gonna substitute summer squash and green beans for starters. Damned triglicerydes!! :unlove: Only kind of fruit I can bear is fruit cocktail in a jar or can, and bananas.

And, I, too, for all my good intentions, usually eat 2 instead of 1 100 calorie pack of Oreos or Chips Ahoy at night with my cup of Sanka.

Doc also told me to start walking at least 30 min.’s a day, even if in 10 minute increments. Like Carly said, it’s TOO COLD in New England for that. Hm…where DID I put that Walk Away The Pounds video…?
