Music and Lyrics
aka a feel good movie I highly recommend
:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:

I took my ten year old to see this movie and I LOVED it. Maybe it was the 80’s videos and the 80’s hair, but I was smiling
from the very beginning of this movie to the end. Okay of course the romance writer in me wanted them to make Drew Barrymore’s character stronger by the end. If you haven’t seen the movie I won’t ruin it but suffice it to say that she couldn’t confront her ex who wronged her and they never rectified this in a satisfying way with her character.
Other than that, I loved it. I :love2: Hugh Grant. Now I’ve never seen him in a movie before (Yes, shocking) but he was awesome. My daughter asked if I could put him on my WALL and I wanted to say yes, but I couldn’t get the hooker out of my mind.
(Remember David Letterman: WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?) ![]()
But the movie and the man: So cute. Enough that my daughter and I downloaded the entire music album from iTunes. Another set of embarrassing songs on my iPod.
Who cares! It was a love story and you all know I love those.
Has anyone seen this and did you love it as much as I did? Any Hugh Grant (happy ending) movies you can recommend since I’ve never seen him in a movie before this one? Or any other good romantic comedies out there lately? (Not oldies, new ones!)

Haven’t seen this one yet, but I want to. I liked him in “Two Weeks’ Notice” with Sandra Bullock and in “Love Actually”. He’s very likeable in both.

Are those happy ending romance movies Stacy?
Comment by Carly — March 13, 2007 @ 6:50 am
Carly,
Love Actually has a happy ending for Hugh, but it’s also an anthology with a few risque parts (not for your daughter to watch) and some not so happy endings (Emma Thompson has a heart breaking role in this movie). I had my 17 yr old daughter watch Notting Hill (HG & Julia Roberts) and she loved it - added it to her collection. Good movie & happy ending! And two weeks notice is good as well with a happy ending. Don’t forget the two Bridget Jone’s Diary movies (he was the bad boy and did a great job in those movies!) and I loved him in About a Boy - a heartwrenching movie, but very good. Four Weddings & A Funeral is another one to watch. Can you tell I like Hugh Grant - despite the hooker moment, he’s got the charming bad boy bit down pat!

He played in NINE MONTHS which was hilarious!!! A great romantic movie, as well. If you haven’t seen it, do so NOW.

I loved Music an Lyrics and just have to laugh because I too downloaded the soundtrack from itunes. My brother talked me into seeing it when he came in for a visit. I loved all the 80’s music, and POP made me think of WHAM. I was also pretty impressed that Hugh did all his own singing. I love every Hugh Grant movie of his that I’ve seen. 4 weddings and a funeral is so funny(but there are lots of f-bombs in this movie). Notting Hill is still my fav movie of his. Great happy ending movies!!!

OK soo I have a list. I’m going to get Holiday today - unHugh Grant related but highly recommended by a friend - and Nine Months maybe as a start! Keep going Ladies.
Comment by Carly — March 13, 2007 @ 9:04 am
YES! POP reminded me of WHAM! too! All good memories and just so much fun. :thumbsup2:
My daughter plays that song all the time! (POP Goes my Heart)
Comment by Carly — March 13, 2007 @ 9:06 am
The Holiday was good. Saw that in the theaters. Jude Law (sigh). Happy ending, though they could have done more with it IMO. (Come back and tell us what you thought after you’ve seen it).
And if you’ve never seen Hugh, that means you’ve never seen Bridget Jones Diary??
Comment by Lori Borrill — March 13, 2007 @ 9:24 am
Everyone has named all the ones I can think of. Hugh is a cutie (hooker moment not with standing). I still melt when I think of his “To Quote David Partridge” moment from “Four Weddings”.
Comment by katie — March 13, 2007 @ 9:37 am
I LOVE HUGH! He’s just so darn adorable and irresistible, despite that hooker OOPS! What was he thinking? I think that was the moment I realized that a man could have the most gorgeous woman (in looks and body w/ Elizabeth Hurley!) and still cheat (though WHY, I haven’t a clue! Maybe he wasn’t getting any from EH, LOL!).
My top favorites of his are Love Actually (I bought the DVD on this one, I loved it so much!), Two Weeks Notice (with Sandra Bullock, who I also love!), Notting Hill (with Julie Roberts) and Both of the Bridget Jones Diaries! I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those — though I do have to agree with the person who said that Love Actually does have a “risque” storyline line to it — but it was cute. Just not appropriate for an eleven year old!
Comment by Janelle — March 13, 2007 @ 9:38 am
To quote David Partridge moment? I’m so going to have to see Four Weddings!
Comment by Carly — March 13, 2007 @ 9:41 am
Actually I have seen Bridget Jones. I just never got into the chick lit thing and so it wasn’t a stick with me movie!

My favorite Hugh movies were 4 weddings, two weeks notice, and nine months, all very funny.
I just this weekend saw Little Miss Sunshine, which wasn’t romantic, but it was laugh out loud funny!! We loved it…although some strong language so use caution with children, we watched it with my son who is 13 and he loved it too.
Another movie we recently watched was Click with Adam Sandler:thumbsup2::thumbsup2:Just great!
I’m hoping to see Hog Wild this weekend…I love love love John Travolta:love2: Has anyone seen it?
Comment by Tina Martinesi — March 13, 2007 @ 10:38 am
Carly, I love HG and have to second the rec on About a Boy, which I think is Hugh’s best movie ever — I rewatch it often. It’s hysterical, fun, touching, and romantic in a sideways kind of way — and he’s sexy as hell in it. I love anything he’s in (well, not American Dreamz — hated that, and doesn’t have a good ending), but About a Boy and Love Actually would be my two favorites.

I have to agree with all the Notting Hill people, that one was a great one. I haven’t seen it yet, but I have the DVD coming of Holiday. I heard it was great.
The other two that come to mind but aren’t new are “The Wedding Date” and “Monster In Law” I laughed so hard with Jane Fonda and JLo’s scenes in Monster In law…and I am sure you must have seen it Carly seeing that Michael Vartan is the leading man. *sigh* he is HOT

I :love2: Hugh Grant, too, and can’t wait to see Music and Lyrics. Like others have posted, I really enjoyed Love, Actually. It’s probably my favorite Hugh movie. Enjoyed Notting Hill, too, but didn’t particularly care for Julia Robert’s character. She wasn’t deserving of him, IMO. :-)
I actually saw Hugh in Chicago at Uno’s Pizzeria. RWA, 1999? The year could be off, but he was in town promoting Mickey Blue Eyes. (Didn’t like that one.) Anyway, he and a few friends walked into Uno’s and were escorted to a table in the back. Naturally some fool hollered out “Where’s Divine?” as he walked past.
Comment by Rhonda Nelson — March 13, 2007 @ 11:35 am
I also saw this one this weekend, and, as Carly knows, was going to blog about how much I loved it, too! Smart minds and all, right? lol! Totally got the “Wham” connection and I just kept hoping Colin (aka the George Michael character) would be caught naked with a guy in a CA men’s room…
This was such a feel-good movie, and yet another example of how the movie-going public really likes romantic comedies…so why aren’t they selling so well in book form???? Just don’t get that.
I really liked Hugh in Notting Hill (even if the “I’m just a girl, looking at a boy…” line Julia Roberts says almost made me barf because it’s so cheesy…lol!) And loved him in Two Weeks Notice and 9 Months! He’s such a charming rogue…my favorite kind of guy!
I have to second the :thumbsup2: on The Wedding Date, too! A very sexy romantic comedy. Would be great as a romance novel, if the hero weren’t a gigolo..

I loved ‘Music and Lyrics’ too. I cried with laughter when I saw the music video for Hugh Grant’s group. It was hilaroius.
Other Hugh Grant movies I would recommend are everything he’s done. Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones 1 and 2, Two Weeks Notice and SEnse & Sensibility
Comment by Maria Duncan — March 13, 2007 @ 11:46 am
Love, Actually really isn’t appropriate for your daughter…unless you can edit through the storyline about the porno stand-in actors, which really went over the top. Without that storyline, I can’t think of anything else inappropriate. She’ll fall in love with the little boy who plays Liam Neeson’s step-son, that’s for sure. And the movie has Colin Firth…and well, every movie is better with Colin Firth. (Or is that Alan Rickman…wait! He’s in the movie, too!) Honestly, Hugh’s storyline was the best one of the bunch, IMO.
I loved Two Weeks Notice…but the only Hugh movie not mentioned (unless I missed it) is my favorite…Sense and Sensibility. While it does not have Colin Firth, it does have Alan Rickman! Hugh’s acting in this one is superb. He plays a man torn by love and honor to great effect. And then there’s Alan Rickman.
I haven’t seen Music and Lyrics and have no idea if/when I’ll get to until it comes on video.

Thanks to all of you I have Four Weddings and a Funeral in my hot little hands. Now to find time to watch it. And Holiday. And then to move on to the others! Thanks!

Haven’t seen this yet but want to & also want to see Hog Wild! It looks to be very funny! I think I’ll have to go request a couple of the Hugh movies I haven’t seen on Netflix!!
Have a great day everyone.

Love, actually has become one of my fav, must watch movies at Xmas. I love HG, who cares about the hooker.
I can’t wait to see the new one.
Did you know he had the make up artist bring him booze so he could get through the singing and dancing in the new movie? He said it was the only way he could relax and do the scenes.
We are off to go see The 300. I also have to go pick up Caino Royale which came out today. Liked it much better than I thought I would.

Carly: The Keith Partridge moment is not that exciting, just a momentary thing. I told my husband (I think we were still ‘dating’ at the time), if he ever came up with a line like that, I would melt. So corny, but, yet, so adorable!
Comment by katie — March 13, 2007 @ 5:38 pm
I too love Hugh Grant :love2:
My favorite HG movies are Love Actually & Notting Hill.
We really want to see Music & Lyrics ~ thanks for the good reviews!!
Comment by Shelley — March 13, 2007 @ 5:42 pm
Ev, no clue he had to drink before singing. That is hysterical. Can’t say I blame him. He’s so quick witted in his dialogue. I just love it.
Katie, I’ll still watch for the Keith Partridge moment.
This has been fun … helped during a long day home with my daughter who has a migraine. I feel so bad she inherited them from me.

Karen, HG is great, even in not-so-good movies. My faves are: NOTTING HILL, 4 WEDDINGS (not for the young kid) & LOVE ACTUALLY (very unusual movie with scenes that surprised me).
I have a home video recommendation. It’s not a comedy, but, I think, is the best family movie I’ve ever seen. It’s called SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER, about a young man who learns to play competitive chess in the park, his parents pay for him to take lessons, &, subsequently, he joins kids’ chess competitions. I know, it sounds weird, but, I found it fascinating, & it has great “life lessons” in it. I loved it, & always recommend it to families looking for a wonderful film.
I echo Leslie about books that are romantic comedies: why aren’t they selling? However, SEP’s books seem to do well. Honestly, I feel that the weirdo paranormals are just a fad, &, except for Feehan & a few others, will be gone quickly. At the Celebrate Romance! conference only a few of us read them, &, many, still like Regencies, Category & Historicals, so, I can’t believe we are all that unique.

I have been wanting to see this one. Thanks for posting about it. My favorite movie with him is probably NOTTING HILL, I love that movie.
Comment by Kris — March 13, 2007 @ 6:39 pm
Patricia, I hope the bottom doesn’t fall out of paranormals just yet…I have two coming out this year and two more the year after! I love paranormals…always have. I’ve been dying to write these books for so long and I’m just glad the market finally opened up.
Comment by Julie Leto — March 13, 2007 @ 6:48 pm
My favorite one is Two Weeks Notice. He’s cute and funny.
Comment by Stacy S — March 13, 2007 @ 7:36 pm
My favorites are also LOVE ACTUALLY (great ensemble cast) and TWO WEEKS NOTICE. The actress that plays the girl after Sandra Bullock’s job is the same one that portrayed the heroine in Nora Robert’s BLUE SMOKE on Lifetime.
Hugh is such a sweet slimeball in some of his movies. You can’t help but love him.

Well, Julie, hope your paranormals are successful–the others can tank!

Love Actually is good but as mentioned by another poster, not suitable for minors. I would recommend Notting Hill, About A Boy and if you don’t mind seeing him play the villain, Bridget Jones’s Diary.
Comment by Jennybrat — March 13, 2007 @ 10:46 pm
Carly, I saw this movie the day it came out. I’m a big Drew Barrymore fan and usually enjoy movies with Hugh Grant, so Music and Lyrics was on my list of must-see films. I really liked this movie, and the songs were very catchy. The video featuring Hugh Grant at the beginning of the movie cracked me up. I agree with you about Drew’s character and her inability to confront her ex.
Other movies featuring Hugh Grant that I recommend are: Love Actually, Notting Hill (sort of a modern day Roman Holiday), About a Boy, and the Bridget Jones flicks. This isn’t a Hugh Grant movie, but have you ever seen Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan (hottie)? It’s one of my favorite movies. It’s from 1999, so it’s not that old, but it’s not a new romantic comedy either.
Comment by Diana — March 13, 2007 @ 11:36 pm
In my HG recommendations, forgot to add ABOUT A BOY. This was different, enjoyable & included a storyline with surprises (I expected a relationship to go one way; it went completely the other), not an easy circumstance to find in films. I think I liked this better than LOVE, ACTUALLY, also a different type film.
