True Colors

Leslie Icon

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it on here, but I am a big game player. I love playing board games or party games. I have been known to instigate a rousing game of charades and you just don’t want to play a trivia game against a team comprised of me and my hubby.

I have a new favorite game that has had me thinking a lot. My equally game-nutty brother got this very cool game for Christmas and I liked it so much I bought myself a copy of it from Amazon. It’s called TRUE COLORS.

Anyway, Sunday was one of those days when my family all gets together, drinks a lot of beer, does stupid stuff like going out sledding–make that “icing” on the 2 inches of ice covering my sister’s lawn–and gets loud and obnoxious playing games. So we dug out this game and it sparked some really interesting–hilarious–conversations.

Here’s how the game works: Everyone has a color. A question is read and each person has to vote–using the colors–on who the question most applies to. Then you try to guess how people will vote for you…whether you’ll get the most votes, none at all, or “some.”

For instance, a question might be something like, “Who here could talk their way out of a speeding ticket?” Easy, right? But some of the questions are a little more insulting: Who’d be most likely to commit a crime? Who always thinks they’re right? Who’s the least honest? Who’s the cheapest? (They’re not worded exactly that way, but that’s the gist.)

Well, I have to say it was quite eye opening to say the least. Who knew I am the one who never shuts up during movies? (My 15 year old did a cutting impression of me critically analyzing everything I watch.) Or that I would be the most likely to scream obscenities at a visiting sports team? (Per my 11 year old…who justified that by pointing to my potty mouth when I’m behind the wheel.) Or that I am the worst driver? (Okay…I guess I can see that one. Sigh.) My nephew got very offended when he got zero votes for the question “Who here would you most like to have as your child?” (Uh…his Mother was playing…ahem…)

Anyway, if you’re ever looking for a fun game that can inspire some raucous debate, be sure to check this one out!

Or if you just want to have a conversation where you learn more about somebody else. Like, umh, this:

Which Plotmonkey is willing to arm wrestle for crème brulee?
Which Plotmonkey would be best to have at your back in a fight?
Which Plotmonkey won’t stay at a place that doesn’t have room service?
Which Plotmonkey lives life as a musical?

Any answers…or more questions? I bet some of our Plotmonkeys regulars could play this game together and have a ball!

PS: I’ll be doing an online chat (my first in ages!) tonight at www.eharlequin.com. It’s at 8pm EST. As of right now there’s a link to the chatroom on the bottom of the main page at eHarlequin. If you’ve never shopped or chatted there before, you might want to arrive a few minutes early to set up an id/password. PLEASE JOIN ME (I do hate to chat alone. ) I’m sure I’ll be giving away stuff.

  2. Hmmm, I know that these have been talked about before…but I am only guessing here. LOL!!

Which Plotmonkey is willing to arm wrestle for crème brulee? Leslie

Which Plotmonkey would be best to have at your back in a fight? This one I am thinking is Julie, but I think the next question is Julie too. LOL!! Gosh this is too confusing.

Which Plotmonkey won’t stay at a place that doesn’t have room service? Carly

Which Plotmonkey lives life as a musical? Janelle

    Okay, how’d I do??

  3. Who is jealous because Leslie has a family that does fun things, like drink beer, ice sled and play silly games together???

I have a feeling my poor daughter would be right there with your nephew.

  4. I am so bad at remembering that stuff. Except for the fighting one, I believe that’s definitely Julie LOL. She’s one tough monkey, and I’d want her on my side *g*

Sounds like a fun game. I have friends who love finding new games - I’ll have to mention this one to them.

    Comment by Stacy ~ — February 19, 2007 @ 9:57 am

  5. Ditto on Kelly’s answers. Although, I think I could see Julie fighting over creme brulee, as well. Who in their right mind wouldn’t slug it out over dessert?

    Kim–who LOVES dessert

  6. I meant arm wrestling–not fighting. But competition is competition. WANT CREME BRULEE!

  7. Leslie thank you for telling us about the game.I’ll be looking for it the next time I go to the store. Friday is our Family game night. Apples to apples (card game) has been a huge hit. My girlfriends love getting together and playing Loaded Questions.

  8. Leslie,
It sound wonderful. I haven’t played a board game since the girls were younger.
Once they hit the Nintedo 64 age, then the game cube and game boy now they play with the Wii all the tiime.
I’ve always been a big fan of Monopoly. I love counting money:doggie:

    Here are my guesses:
Which Plotmonkey is willing to arm wrestle for crème brulee?Leslie
Which Plotmonkey would be best to have at your back in a fight? Julie
Which Plotmonkey won’t stay at a place that doesn’t have room service?Carly
Which Plotmonkey lives life as a musical? Janelle
I also think Janelle would have your back in a fight.

    Comment by Gigi — February 19, 2007 @ 10:21 am

  9. Well, to be honest, *any* of us would have your back in a fight.

I think my brother and I are so into games because we were raised that way. Our Dad was/is/will always be the world’s most aggressive Monopoly/Risk game player. We’d play games that would last for DAYS and he was utterly ruthless. My girls heard so many stories about it that they refused to play Monopoly with me until about a year ago. When they finally did, they discovered I am not like their Papa…lolol…and actually enjoyed it!

PS: For those who didn’t see it, I just added a note to the bottom of my blog post. Please come to my chat tonight at 8pm EST at http://www.eharlequin.com. I have visions of myself at a chat listening to crickets in an empty auditorium like that old Looney Tunes cartoon.

  10. I have to say my friends and I would get the biggest kick out of playing this game. I’ll have to get it before I host our Yaya get together next month…I also don’t know of anyone who wouldn’t “fight” for the creme brulee. My fav of all times!!! My friends can’t even take it off their menu it is so popular.

    Comment by Liza — February 19, 2007 @ 11:38 am

  11. Just to show how much I have in common with my Plotmonkeys, I could actually be the answer to all four questions…it’s a question of degrees.

    Comment by Julie Leto — February 19, 2007 @ 12:44 pm

  12. Games can be so much fun. I think this game sounds like a riot. I am off now to google “Creme Brulee” since I have no clue as to what it is…….I somehow think I might be missing out on something………

    Comment by Cryna — February 19, 2007 @ 12:49 pm

  13. That sounds like a great game!

    Comment by Susan — February 19, 2007 @ 1:07 pm

  14. Which Plotmonkey is willing to arm wrestle for crème brulee?
This has to be Leslie Couldn’t be Janelle she’s dieting
Which Plotmonkey would be best to have at your back in a fight?
I’ll take Julie. I remember those garbage men.
Which Plotmonkey won’t stay at a place that doesn’t have room service?
    Carly & Janelle
Which Plotmonkey lives life as a musical? Well Leslie is more serious, Julie is into marisela adventure/romance, Janelle maybe depending on the musical. I’m thinking Carly with that gypsy troupe and all that monkey businessl. Wasn’t it Carly playing the piano in one of the plotmonkey picks?

EV what did you buy for your B-day How’s hubby?

    Comment by jeannie — February 19, 2007 @ 1:32 pm

  15. I picked Carly for all the questions except the Creme burlee, only because I know she’s trying to do the healthy eating thing….Sounds like a fun game.

    Comment by Tina Martinesi — February 19, 2007 @ 2:10 pm

  16. I’m so glad that your family can get together and play that kind of game. I don’t have a very big family, and we’re spread out, so I don’t see my family playing it. And my husband’s family….we’d end up in a huge fight! We all think we’re right all the time. Each person has the moto: “It’s my way or the wrong way,” so I just don’t see that being a “fun” game. It would segue into Family Feud - and that game would last for decades!!!

    Comment by Jodie — February 19, 2007 @ 2:36 pm

  17. You know, my family is so used to throwing out insults at each other. My 11 year old got so frustrated with one of my sisters harassing her one night that she turned to me, said, “Mom, can I *please* cuss?” And I kinda gave her this, “Oooo-kaaaaay” response, wondering what the heck she was going to do, and she looked my sister in the eye and said, “You are such a beeeee-yotch!”

Totally cracked me up. (Mother of the year that I am!) Because my 4 sisters and I call each other that all the time…lol! (Our only brother, the baby, is affectionally called a little shit.)

  18. Cryna–creme brulee is this really interesting custard type dish with a hard, caramelized sugar coating on the top. Very good…but here’s a hint–I am NOT the creme brulee addict of the bunch.

And obviously if you’ve been a plotmonkey visitor from day one, you’ll know which one of us lives life as a Broadway musical…there was a whole blog with that title way back when.

    Comment by Leslie — February 19, 2007 @ 3:03 pm

  19. Oh my so sorry Leslie. So your not the creme brulee plotmonkey huh?

Hmmm let me rethink this. I haven’t been a plotmonkey poster as long as

I guess I should have been. I don’t like creme brulee either.

I’m more a hot fudge chewie brownie sundae kinda gal.

    Comment by jeannie — February 19, 2007 @ 3:21 pm

  20. Leslie, that sounds like a really fun game!

I’m enjoying everyone trying to guess which Plotmonkey goes with what question. Interesting answers! Although it does seem that two specific Plotmonkeys are easy to identify, LOL!

Everyone will have to check back later tonight to find out the REAL answers to those Plotmonkey questions!

  21. Hmm! Just a wild guess; are you the “musical”

Oh my word, it’s you isn’t it.

    Well I’ll be danged.

Hey I have never read some of the archives, no time like the present.

Julie you may love Creme Brulee (as does dieting Janelle)

But I think you’d be great as back up.

  26. Ok so Leslie is the Musical lover. Pie is good Leslie.

    I like Cherry & Blueberry

Julie is the Creme Brullee lover.:cocktail:

    Geech this one is tough…Hmmm!

I’m betting both Janelle and Carly love room service and as for my

back I’d take them both. Oh my but this is tough.

Which Plotmonkey won’t stay at a place that doesn’t have room service?
    Carly and Julie
Which Plotmonkey lives life as a musical?
    Janelle

I do think Julie could be answered for anyone of those as well. But if I had to pick one for me to have her in…oh yeah, no contest, for her to have my back in a fight.

I love that game. My daughter got it when she went away to college and everytime I went to visist we would play it with her roommates and friends. I knew a lot of them so it was fun.

How fun your game time with your familty sounds. I used to do that with my ex’s family all the time. It was so much fun. I do miss that part.

  44. Okay, I guess I’ll give the answers.

A lot of you were right in thinking several of these things would apply to multiple monkeys…

Julie and Janelle both love Creme Brulee, but Janelle is the Creme Brulee QUEEN!

Julie and I are probably both the fighters, but she’s WAY tougher than me.

Carly and Janelle are both room service requirees…but I would have to say Carly takes the cake on this one.

And Julie and I are both musical mamas…but I am the one who tends to equate my life to a musical!

This was fun! Hope you all enjoyed it too…now go get the game and torment your family members!

    Comment by Leslie — February 19, 2007 @ 11:12 pm

  45. Ah, yes. Janelle and I have bonded over many a creme brulee. I think it was one of the first things we found we had in common. But if it’s on the menu, Janelle will order it. Diet or not, she will not pass up a good creme brulee!

I appreciate Carly’s need for room service and frankly, am thankful we have to make sure this is part of our hotel experience. I always volunteer to cook at our plotting weekends and they always say no and deep down, I’m glad I don’t have to do dishes! For the record, my idea of “roughing it” is a Holiday Inn. Another thing Carly and I have in common.

I learn so much about musical theater from Leslie! She’s the real afficianado…I’m just a fan. I always check with her before I see any show because she’s already seen it–probably more than once–and can give me all the scoop! Whoever guessed Carly loved musicals cracked me up…despite her proximity to Broadway, she HATES them. Janelle also loves musicals, so we’re three out of four.

And yeah, I’m the fighter. It’s in the blood.

    Comment by Julie Leto — February 20, 2007 @ 12:47 am

  46. Diet or no diet, I :love2: Creme Brulee! I will wrestle anyone to the ground for it!

When we were in New Orleans for the annual RWA Conference, I had Creme Brulee every night at different restaurants.
