Seemingly out of the blue this weekend, I caught a really nasty cold. Â Worse than any I’ve had in years — and before anyone asks, no, I NEVER get a flu shot. Â I probably should, but I don’t. Â But I have a feeling this cold/flu is a result of my traveling last week and being on a plane and running myself down (and not taking my vitamins — my bad!).
Saturday I woke up feeling a little “BLAH”, and by Saturday night I had a full blown head cold. Â The kind that comes with a headache, congestion, stuffy head/nos,e, not being able to breath — the whole enchilada. Â Sunday was even worse, and I spent the day medicated and sleeping. Â So, as a result, my head just can’t come up with any kind of blog — sorry for the let down.
But I can ask you all a question — how many of you got a flu shot this year? Â And has it worked for you? Â Would you recommend a flu shot, or not?

I’m sorry that you got sick this weekend. My sister also got under the weather over the weekend and missed two big family get togethers.
I do get a flu shot to answer your question. I’ve been getting them since I worked at a middle school and then got a job at a hospital, where it is mandatory. I feel it helps myself. My daughter got the flu, even with the flu shot, but her symptoms were less. Only lasted a few days too.
Get better soon. No fun being sick.
I’m so sorry you are under the weather. Since I am a high school teacher, with asthma, I do get a flu shot each year. Most years it really does help. However, it doesn’t help when you get those nasty colds that become sinus infections. Hope you feel better soon.
That stinks!
I do not get a flu shot. I have bad allergies and one of them is egg yolks which are found in the flu shot so my doctor says it is not worth risking it….or I would get the shot.
I hope you feel better soon.
I get a flu shot every year. I am a Type I Diabetic and a kidney transplant patient so it’s vital that I get one. It has worked for me so far(knock on wood).
Hugs, Janelle. I don’t get a flu shot (lots of reasons, I’m sure it’s a fine shot), but my husband does. Works for him. I was just telling him last night at dinner how I seem to have escaped (knock on wood) the flu this year (the boys had a total of 9 days of it). I just used Mio (like a kool aid flavoring) with Vitamin B and took Vitamin D. I guess they worked.
Take care! No flu shot yet and I’m not planning on them either.
Ugh, Janelle! I’ve just recovered–mostly–from the same head cold. It sucks but took about four days. I NEVER get a flu shot. The one time I did, I was sick all winter. REALLY sick. Like almost ended up in the hospital sick. I don’t take them any more and other than a few colds over a period of about ten years, I’ve been fine.
Get well soon!
I hope you feel better Janelle!!! I do get a Flu shot every year. First my company brings in Nurses so the employee’s don’t have to go to the Doctors office or walk in clinic to get the shot and second I’m a Type 1 diabetic.
Hubby and the kids didn’t get one this year, they all got hit with some form of the Flu. Me, knock on wood have been lucky.
Janelle,
Feel better soon. I dont’ think getting a flu sot prevents you from getting a cold…I DO NOT GET THE FLU SHOT but would recommend the shingles vaccine got shingles in December and still recovering…
I know people that got the flu shot and were sick all winter I didn’thave a cole in 3 1/2 years so will take my chances….
Donna
I hope you’re feeling better. I get a flu shot.
My doctor makes me get one every year because I was getting pneumonia or bronchitis. Knock on wood, none of that in the six years I have been getting the shot.
Sorry to here you are sick. I did get a flu shot this year and no I haven’t been sick at all, knock on wood.
Janelle, Sorry about your cold. I don’t want to throw hot water re any flu shot enthusiasts, but, I had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (couldn’t stand or walk for 8 l/2 weeks) 15 YO, & research shows that if one has a flu shot (which I had not), you might contract GBS as a result. Even its ads now say to see your doctor before getting one if you have a history of GBS. Just a note of caution.
Feel better.
Patricia
My youngest (16) is the only one who got a flu shot – and the only one who got the flu over Christmas break on vacation
She went on Tamiflu, so did we (lesser dose) on dr’s recommendation as a precaution. FEEL BETTER!
Hey Janelle, I hope you feel better. I have NEVER GOTTEN A FLU SHOT,AND I NEVER WILL. After watching 60 Minutes last night about the report on fungus infection and how our very own FDA dropped the MAJOR BALL on investigating this company that supplied the medicine that ended up KILLING PEOPLE whom got a shot of this stuff, that would be a HUGE NO. Please look for natural alternatives to the usual suspects for medicine. Ask Questions. Considering what they charge you in med bills by all means speak up and speak out. Feel Better and I have a question…are you going to write again about the book series set in Las Vegas? I want to know I love that series.
:flowers4you: :praying:
If you watched the 60 Minutes program on the company that didn’t take proper care of the way they prepared the medicine it was not from one of the major drug companies. It was a company that compounds the medicine & is not controlled as much by the FDA. I don’t remember all the details.
I have gotten a flu shot every year for the last probably 15 years or even longer. I cannot remember the last time I got sick. Lucky me, I tend to be very healthy. The flu shot cannot make you sick as it is a dead virus. That fact has been told to me by a pharmacist & my doctor. You are getting sick from something else. All this said each of us is going to believe what we do. The flu shots do not cover all strains. If you do get sick after having the shot usually the illness is less severe.
Janelle, so sorry to hear you are sick. You probably were exposed to something in your travels. A good rule of thumb is to remember to always take good care of yourself, eat well, get enough rest, we all know what needs to be done. Recover quickly, feel better. :flowers4you:
Sorry you’re sick… I always get a flu shot.. While I can’t remember where I read it, airplanes & hotel rooms are noted for being germy! The fold-down tables, insides of seat pocket and all it’s contents, armrests… hotel light switches, remotes, info packets.. And I’m not OCD about this stuff.. but I do carry disinfectant wipes when I travel [now it does sound like I'm OCD] .. but my mom still travelled some as she got frailer..and I would be extra careful for her.
Sorry you aren’t well. Hope youget better soon.
As to the flu jab, my husband and I have ours every year. I am asthmathic and he has diabetes, Heart problems and a whole lot of other stuff going on, so neither of us can afford to risk getting flu. Touch wood but neither of us has had any bad side effects from having it and it’s been years now :D
Oh Janelle I’m so sorry
I am a firm believer in “Airborn” and “Zicam”. Both are natural products that WORK probably because of the Zinc. The trick is catching the cold when you first suspect you might be getting sick!!! I am a Type 1 insulin dependent Diabetic and I have high blood pressure so I can’t take many over the counter cold remedies… Take a nice steamy shower to open your sinuses and use a saline nasal spray with menthol & eucalyptus (4-Way Brand has one) to keep them openish. I also use “Vicks” in your nose at night. I hope this helps, it’s what I do. :flowers4you:
And yes, I am a firm believer in flu shots. I’ve avoided most of them and I get sick easily (compromised immune system). The shot each year only has the virus for 3-4 per year and have to predict which ones will sweep the nation a year in advance. Some years they guess better than others. Sometimes they pick the wrong ones from thousands of options, and we get sick cause we weren’t inoculated with the flu we came down with. :hugging:
Thanks everyone for the good wishes. Feeling slightly better today, but the congestion in my nose was so bad that I couldn’t breath without my mouth being open, so I went and got some nasal spray — which means I’m desperate because I HATE nasal sprays! But it did help and now at least I can breath through my nose!
Did you give it to me or did I give it to you??? I have the same thing. ugh. Need to find my Vicks Nasal Spray so I can breathe. Although, with the dogs down by my feet and they way they like to send up “smoke” signals, maybe I’ll wait.
I always get a flu shot, now that they use a dead virus and it doesn’t make me sick. I haven’t had the flu, and this is the first cold in a long time. But, since my job brings me into contact with a lot of people, many of whom show up sick or not, I’m not surprised.
I have the same cold. I’ve spent the entire day in bed sleeping and taking cold meds. Heading back to work tomorrow, but will go back to bed as soon as I get home. Hope you feel better soon!
Working in the medical field, I get a flu shot every year. The last time I had the flu was about four years ago. Get well soon, Janelle.
Get well soon Janelle, getting sick stinks.
I don’t get flu shots, mainly because I can’t justify the cost. I’m more prone to cold viruses and resultant, in my case, throat infections. As a result, its probably not worth me getting a flu shot even if I could justify the shot.
My husband and I get the “flu” shot every year, and have for the last 10 years. I am in my mid 50′s now and even if the shot helps me have a lesser case of the flu, it is worth it to us. A couple of year ago we put off getting our shots and in November of that year we got the flu from a 4 yr old grandchild
She was pretty sick and wanted Papa to hold her. Well, “Papa” got sick and then Grandma got sick and it wasn’t pretty. When we recovered, we made a trip to the Dr and got shots. We have 13 grandchildren and most are young enough to sit on your lap when they are sick. Never again will we put off those stupid shots. We recommend them to everyone. And we don’t argue about their effectiveness- LOL. We know what has worked for us
I get the flu shot every year and normally get sick. Knock on wood, I have not since I got the shot this time. Hope you feel better soon Janelle!
I received the flu shot this year and knock on wood I haven’t gotten sick. Feel better soon.
I always get the flu shot and have never had the flu (colds yes) when I’ve gotten the shot. This year I just never fit it in. (I was kinda hoping 15+ years of the flu shot would give me a cumulative protection.) I’ve lucked out so far and just had a cold in Dec. Despite how bad the news reports were on the flu, no one I knew or worked with actually had the flu so that’s why I think I didn’t get it despite not having the shot. I will get off my duff and get one next year because the last time I had the real flu it was miserable. My throat was so sore, I would lean over the side of my bed with my mouth open hoping any liquid would drain out so I wouldn’t have to swallow. TMI?!?
The older one is the more important the shot is.
I get a flu shot every year and this is the first winter, touch wood, that I have not had the flu. I have had a head cold, but that was nothing compared to how sick I was last year.. Twice with the flu… was awful… So I am crossing my fingers that I will not be sick.
Hope you feel better soon…
:yuk: Hope you are feeling better. I had a flu shot. My husband has not and has been fine. But we mostly stay home. Hope he does not get it after I say he is fine. :flag: :flag:
Sorry you are not feeling well. I get the flu shot every year because I have asthma.
I haven’t had the flu since I have been getting the shot and very rarely have a cold.
Mary Ann
I have had the flu twice and it is very different from having just a cold, at least in my case it was. Funny thing, both times I had the flu was immediately after having the shot. Oh yes, I know, but here is the deal ,when I quit getting the shot, i also stopped having the flu. Might be because I wasn’t being exposed to other flu viruses present in the waiting rooms or even the virus i was being given a shot for since even this year , they were forced to admit this years shots might not be able to fight off the virus but they were still encouraging the elderly and infants to squeeze into those waiting rooms and expose themselves to the flu virus. Influenza is something to take very seriously but a little common sense when it comes to fighting exposure might also be called for.
My husband and I got a flu shot…so far it’s worked for us…knock wood…My dad can’t get one cause it makes him very sick!
I hope you feel better soon! I got my flu shot this year and so far so good. I didn’t get it last year and did OK too. I got it the year before and got the flu anyway. I like to hope it’s really working.
Get well soon
My husband and I got the flu shot, but only because we were going on a cruise at Thanksgiving. We were afraid that we might get it from someone who didn’t want to stay home when they had paid a big deposit to go on a cruise. We were lucky then, and have been lucky since.
I hope you are feeling better. That whole mouth breathing business makes getting any rest difficult.
Amazing Post.thanks for share..more wait ..
