Goodreads . . .

Posted by at Feb 18, 2013 6:00 am

Today I’d like to talk about Goodreads.  Personally, I don’t know a whole lot about it — I have an author account, but I really don’t know how to REALLY utilize Goodreads.  I’m hoping you all can give me some insight to Goodreads, and how I might be able to use it as an AUTHOR tool.  Here’s some questions for those of you who do use Goodreads:

1.  If you use Goodreads, what do you use it for (beyond listing the books you’ve read/want to read, and reviews)?

2.  If you’re a reader, how do you like to see an author’s involvement with Goodreads?  (Are there contests authors do?  Author/reader forums you visit? Etc.)

3.  As an author (me), I would like to get more involved with Goodreads — what do you suggest I do?

I’m hoping you all can offer some helpful suggestions about Goodreads — Please share whatever knowledge you have about the site!

I use Goodreads to post reviews and keep up with books I’ve read. I also look at books read by my friends on Goodreads to get ideas for new authors. I like to see authors on Goodreads and especially love when they post which books they are reading. Don’t even have to rate them, but like to see a list of books read. Biggest thing is not to spam readers. I’ve had to block a few authors for spamming me non-stop to read their books.

I know Goodreads host contest all the time, and I’ve entered many. Setting up a fan club group is fun. I’m in a couple where the author gives away one book a month and there is a month-long group discussion about a topic related to that book. Usually goes into everyone suggesting other books like it or movies and tv shows. Author participates as well and it is so much fun.

Liza said it well. I use goodreads to track my books and post reviews. I like to read what others are reading also. the few authors I follow host contest/giveaways for upcoming books by just commenting. I also attended a few audioconferences when authors discuss their upcoming books. questions are asked beforehand and they author tries to answer them from an interviewer.

I also like to see what authors are reading too.

What Liza said pretty much. I think for authors it’s a great tool as long as you don’t overkill it. I know of one author in my opinion who over promotes and not just on goodreads for that matter. I’m in a couple author groups there that are fun.

    Good Morning!

I am on Goodreads all the time. I can keep track of my books, plus I add my reviews there too. There are several options available for authors like you. There are contests/giveaways, that I like to participate in and there are discussion forums. In those groups the authors can interact with the readers. Pretty much, everything that Liza said. Also people can like book reviews and discuss that way, too.

Goodreads is a lot of fun, once you get the hang of it.

    Have a wonderful day everyone!

I’m on Goodreads, but I just get the updates from people like Carly and other friends of mine. I don’t really have the time to update my page or anything.

It’s pretty much been said above for me. I use it to keep track of what I”ve read, when I remember. I also like to see what others are reading, especially authors and what’s new out there.

It will sound simplistic but Goodreads is ,to me, like a book buffet! I do list books I’ve read and reviews but I get a lot of ideas of new books and authors to try from it!

My plotmonkey blog feeds to Goodreads. I WANT to remember to post books but it’s not automatic from the iPad Kindle app and so I don’t. :( If I have news that I want to promote, I’ll go in and add a blog. If I get a notification that someone answered on my Goodreads Blog feed (like once or twice a week max) I’ll go in and directly reply to let people know I’m not just feeding there, but you can actually reach me. But other than that, I’m kinda blank on author use. I’ve contemplated a contest for my next book – and maybe I’ll do that w/ARC’s.

Carly, I use my Goodreads app on my iPad and iPhone all the time. It’s great for posting reviews and keeping the progress of my books.

        Peace and love,

I’m not on Goodreads so I am no help at all. Although I sometimes write reviews it is not my favorite thing! Another reason is that I spend to much time on the computer as it is!!! :D Keep us posted if you go on Goodreads.

I agree with everyone – Lisa said it well. I use Goodreads to track the books I read and want to read. I used to post reviews of the books I read until I hit a brick wall and can’t seem to write them anymore. I also enter the giveaways and have even won some really good books. I’m fans and friends with a number of authors. Unfortunately, I haven’t availed myself of any of the other features. Yet. It’s on my to do list. Can’t help with the author features, sorry.

I have an account but haven’t used it in a long while. I’m bad that way. I’m not even sure i remember my password. Or Signon. LOL

My goal when I got it was to put all my books in it. I like the option of using the SKU number to do it. One of these days I will. It’s on the list.

Maybe by then I will have time for it, but now with work, and what little time I get on the internet at home, i just can’t do it all.

Hi Janelle, I use Goodreads strictly for posting reviews and keeping tracks of the books I read. I also use it for poetry groups, contests and getting possible ARCs for reviewing…that part is new. I don’t really know much about the author side of it though. However, I know there are contests, which can be fun!

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

I have a whole list of books that I have read & rated (90), and a list of books I want to read(106). It doesn’t incorporate all of the books I have read or want to read, though. There are contests sometimes – I have gotten author updates about particular books & you click on it, it brings you to the book on the Goodreads page with an option to sign up for the contest. I don’t really use this as a tool to figure out if I want to read something – usually I go by author recommendations & blogs to try new authors. You can put up an author’s name on Goodreads & come up with all of the books they have & that is convenient.

I use goodreads to keep track of my books, to enter contest, and to leave reviews for what I have read. I also track the author blogs on there that it lets me track.

I currently use Goodreads to track the books I have read, am reading and want to read. I hadn’t realised that it was possible to enter contests but will now be looking into that.
I have the Goodreads app on my phone (Android) and in addition to easily being able to update what I’m reading, I find it really good for being able to scan the barcode of print books that I’m reading so that I can easily add them to my shelves.

    Anne says:

While I occasionally write reviews on Goodreads (which I also post on Amazon), I rarely read reviews (I get those from Amazon usually). I primarily enter the giveaways and I haven’t won a book once in over 2 years of trying.

I use goodreads to track what I’m reading, what’s up and coming from my favourite authors, to enter competitions, to join in chats with fellow readers, to join webchats with authors and other readers and to post my reviews.

I agree with what the others have commented. I also use it while I’m out in the store & looking for another book to read/purchase. (Like I really need to do that!) You have no idea how many paperbacks I stillhave to read & the # of books on my Kindle. But I like having the feature of searching a book title & reading some of the reviews on it. I love the moblity of having the app on my iPhone.
