Working out at Home

Posted by at Jan 14, 2013 6:00 am

So, in my attempt to “get healthy”, I’ve adjusted my eating habits and now must incorporate “exercise”. UGH. I hate to exercise. HATE IT. I’m not the type of person to go to a gym, but I do like to walk, but that gets boring, so I thought I’d try some working out DVD’s to switch things up. I’m hoping you all might be able to help me pick a few that will keep me motivated.

I’ve done the Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred, and while it does give a great work out, it’s BORING. It just feels too much like exercise and I DREAD doing it. I know there are dance exercise videos that give a great work-out while keeping things interesting and fun, but what ones are good? Does anyone know?

If you have a “at home” exercise video you enjoy — please share!

Best thing i ever did was get Zumba for Wii. The kids have a Wii so at first i rented one of their games from the library later i bought one. Watching what i eat and how i cook things etc and doing the Zumba and i lost 35 lbs in in 6 months. Around 5 lbs a month. It’s fun and you can do at your own level in your own house with no one to point and laugh. lol Overall i ended up losing 45 lbs total.

Good luck. Don’t give yourself time to think about doing exercise just do it or you’ll talk yourself out of it. Even 20 minutes helps.

    Good Luck,

I have no fancy consoles, so I can just use DVDs. Gotta say, I still use and like Richard Simmons various Sweatin’ to the Oldies. Might not be the most vigorous workout, but you can add to the movements and do more of them and I enjoy the music. (Richard can be a bit much but his comments are usually minimal.)

I have a Susan Powter (remember her?) tape which sounds a lot like Jillian Michaels. Bland music and the same old, same old for each part of the workout, but you feel like you’ve really worked out.

I’m the same way. I got the “dancing with the stars” workout DVDs. I thought they weren’t working after trying them once and I woke up sore the next day. They are pretty fun, but I use them in conjunction with walking (not on the same day) and yoga (again not on the same day, just on days that I can’t do those (so if my boys are sick). Good luck!

:boxer: Richard Simmons was always one of my favorites. It doesn’t matter which one you pick. They are all good. Just pick the type of music you want to sweat to and get going. LOL Good luck with it all. :cheer:

Richard Simmons was always my favorite. I was walking two miles a day and I always listen to mp3′s while I walked and that helped a lot. Now the doctor tells me not to walk now because my hip is worn out. He tell me to ride my exercise bike twenty min. a day and that is so boring. I hate it.

I’m with you about exercise but unfortunately I HAVE TO with my Type I Diabetes and by body’s tendency to freeze up. I do deep water aerobics 3 times a week to stay limber and walk 3 miles afterwards to loose weight. The treadmill I use allows me to prop my latest book so I can read while I walk. It’s all the reward/incentive I need to put in the walking ;-). I hate exercise but I’ll do it if I get to read a good book! Good luck with finding what works for you :cheer:

I’m no help to you on which DVD’s to try. I have been walking since sometime in the 80′s & so far I’m not bored. Right now I can’t seem to get out there!! I don’t do the same walk everyday & there is always something to look at as the town I live in has some beautiful residential areas, pretty yards, there is always something I like seeing. I also sometimes take my camera so I look at things in a different way, sometimes I drive over to the coast to walk on a trail or go up to an open space here in town that I like. All of that keeps it interesting. When I do walk I always feel much better.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I was totally going to suggest Sweating to the Oldies. Really great workout and you can make it more high impact. I love my wii fit and wii sports. Just learning wii Zumba, but not very good at it yet. Also love to walk and hope to get back to running by the summer.

I love working out at home. I’ve been doing it for over 10 years and haven’t gotten bored yet. I started with and still use Firm workouts. I have used Denise Austin (perky but you do burn calories), Leslie Sansone, Cathe Freidrich (just got her xtrain set and LOVE it, though it’s advanced and I wouldn’t recommend for someone just starting a routine. Turbo jam is fun, Zumba is fun and burns tons of calories. I can go on and on…but these are a few of my favorite workouts. CollageVideo.com has clips so you can preview workouts before you buy which I do all the time.

Janelle, like you, I hate to exercise. I have to do something that is physical and enjoyable. That’s why I play basketball or do martial arts. I go for bike rides sometimes too, but it gets boring. I hear that the Zumba videos are great. I haven’t done them, but the people who do them LOVE it. They love going o the actual Zumba classes more though. Maybe you could look into doing that. Or you could go swimming at your local YMCA or YWCA.

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

I hate to exercise too, but Zumba is fun and I have a yoga DVD done by Diamond Dallas Page, the ex-wrestler. Which is yoga moves with a twist and an intensity like you would believe. If you’ve ever seen that youtube video of Arthur that goes from crutches to running, this is the program he used. http://www.ddpyoga.com/site/index.php/en/
