When I was a kid, we always prepared for the new school year by really digging in and cleaning our rooms. (Mainly so we could do the big hand-me-down shuffle, which I always loved, since I was the youngest of five girls!)
I never really did that with my kids, mainly because I’m a lazy slob. :-)
But this past weekend, my sixteen year old shamed me into it. She came down the other day looking for garbage bags because she (gasp!) WANTED to clean her room. EIGHT (not kidding) garbage bags later, she had a completely empty closet in which she could finally hang all the clothes that had lived on the floor and in laundry baskets. She was very proud of herself…lol! Anyway, she inspired me to get to work on my big nightmare room: my office. I spent all day yesterday working in there, doing a ton of filing, throwing away and shredding old docs, finding places to put things. It’s not 100% yet, and I certainly didn’t fill up 8 trash bags (only 2) but it’s a lot better than it was.
As I was cleaning, I couldn’t stop thinking about one of my favorite George Carlin sketches…where he talks about all our “stuff”. I sought it out and watched it again, and, uh, yeah, he could have been talking right to me. Check it out!

There must be something in the air. I took a vacation day this Friday to organize my books and clean out my spare room. I’m afraid I might top 8 trash bags of garbage. Also will have at least 2-3 bags for Goodwill drop. My spare room has become a junk room and I’m starting to freak if I have to walk in there for anything.
Of those 8 bags, 5 were for Goodwill, 3 for trash. I know I have much more Goodwill stuff in my own closet…that’s next! Feels good to divest, doesn’t it?
:yourock
You rock because you made time to clean out your office. Congrats! I have “third bedroom” nightmares and for some reason there is never enough time in the day to go clean it out. The third bedroom contains: a couple of our boxes from Va were stored after we moved, most of my grandfather’s house items from when he moved in with us, and then because I gave up my bedroom so he could have his own bathroom, it contains all of my stuff. I tried several times to empty it out, but my grandfather wants to keep everything, and now I just leave the door shut. I hope that time will allow me to work in there again, because I am in the mood to toss everything but the basics. Congrats again!!!
Thanks–good luck with that third room! I know that temptation to just “close the door and forget it’s all there.”
Congratulations!!! Wish I had your energy though I do try to go through my closets once a year, even kitchen cabinets and linen closets; it should be done at least twice a year though….time gets away from me, time and good books.
I don’t even wanna think about my kitchen cabinets. Oy…
When the boys are in school, I have been cleaning out (my main motivation is I want furniture…now, I really want a dining room table for Thanksgiving and then living room furniture). So, when the boys go back to school next week, I have a ton of stuff to clear out of the dining room and then it’s furniture!!!
YAY! for new furniture!
One of my motivations for the office clean-out was furniture. I bought a beautiful bookcase to match my pretty office furniture that I got last year, but I never had Bruce put it together. That’s what he’s doing right now!!
I know…Furniture is a great thing…that’s what my Pinterest board is full of. Hub doesn’t know it, but the longer we wait (he wanted to wait until we finish the outside of the house, which is his responsiblity), the more I want!
Congralations.
Maybe your sixteen year old could talk to my seventeen year old daughter and get her to do that too! Only kid I know that can spend hours cleaning her room because it’s so bad she isn’t allowed to do anything else until it’s done and then the next day it’s a mess again!
I’m really impressed with your daughter! I also feel better after reading the comments… I think I will top 8 bags, too! Our monster room is our basement (a walk out so it would be a fabulous addition to the house haha) But, no. It’s piled high with things… such as boxes and bags full of “that stuff we stick somewhere because it is almost time for the party.”
Yay on the clean office!!!
I was so excited to move back up here to MD where we would have a basement (unlike Florida.) The house we bought has a gorgeous “finished” basement with a huge rec room, a full bedroom, bath, and spare “craft” room. There’s about an 8 x 8 section of actual “basement.”
It is JAM PACKED.
My basement is a nightmare!!! Lol. There are books everywhere…that’s the good stuff the rest is stuff that’s been down there for a while. Our son has moved in n out of one side of it probably 4 times the last 5 yrs…I’m not cleaning his mess!! I also have an office that needs “help”…it’s got lots of books too!!!!
Contests on getting yours started!! :cooldance:
I have a spare room that really need cleaning. I don’t think you can see the bed since I have books and boxes of books all over it. I think I just need to invest in another bookcase and maybe downsize the bed. There may even be some clothes left over in the closet from when the kids lived at home. I can plan and organize in my head just fine, it’s actually getting up and doing it that I have a problem with.
Love George Carlin!
I have the extra bedroom where the monsters live. If you open the closet, be prepared to duck. Why do we keep so much *stuff*. I know when I finally clean it out I will throw most of it out .. why did I save it in the first place. Oh, yeah, I might *need* it one day. Enjoy.your nice clean office!!!
I loved George Carlin, especially his routine on ‘stuff – it is oh, so true!! I’m still working on getting motivated to do the office clean thing – it’s a struggle….
Move is a 4 letter word! The one thing good about a move is that you are forced to throw out, give away, etc. I don’t seem to get motivated once the move is complete. It still looks like I moved recently but I didn’t!!!
Congratulations on organizing & cleaning the office. I bet you feel soooo good now that you have done that.
The table where my computer sits is in dire need of organizing, throwing out, filing, etc.
I love George Carlin, his humor was so wise.
Hi Les, I have to go through that whole shredding and throwing out stuff too. I dread it. One day! Hope all is well. It’s Orientation time for me…and so it begins.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
I do a lot of thinking about cleaning and decluttering, but it doesn’t get done! I applaud you! I think I spend too much time on the internet. LOL!
Just finished a major clean. Nothing movates then moving your Mother into your home. Between her apartment, our home and a storage unit it has been a nightmare. I have never thrown, stored and donated so much in my life. It has been an adventure. :drama:
I had forgotten just how funny George was!
It must be a sign of the apocalypse because my daughter did the same thing! Took her the whole day but she did it. I’ve seen that skit and I do remember laughing thru that one.
Thanks for the laugh – guess it begs the question – Do we have stuff or does stuff have us?
