Weather High & Lows . . .

Posted by at Aug 20, 2012 6:00 am

If you’ve been on my Facebook page this past week, I’ve done a lot of complaining about the weather.  I live in the Portland, Oregon area, and I absolutely love it here — rain and all.  Mostly BECAUSE of the rain.  Seriously.  While some people have to have sun, I’m a rain girl.  It could rain for months and I’d be happy.

The summers here in Oregon aren’t really so bad — not compared to where I used to live in Southern California, where every summer day was in the 100′s.  That heat was killer.  For the most part, there is really only one month a year that is really bad for us, heat wise, and that’s August.  And it’s especially horrible because we don’t have an air conditioner in the house we’re living in.  We don’t really need one . . . expect for those few weeks in August that make us feel as though we’re broiling.

Just like every other year, the past two weeks have been in the 90′s, and some days even reaching the 100′s.  I was DYING.  On the really hot days I pack up my laptop and spend from breakfast until after dinner at Panera, borrowing their wi-fi and air conditioning and getting lots of writing done while enjoying three great meals a day, LOL.

This week, it’s dropped into the 70′s, which a clear sign that our August heat wave is over and Fall is just around the corner.  YAHOO!!!  I cannot wait.  Fall is my favorite time of year here in Oregon, followed closely by Spring.

So, how has your summer been?  Cooler than normal?  Hotter than usual?  And what’s YOUR favorite time of the year — Summer, Fall, Winter, or Spring?

I would have to say that it has been cooler than normal here on the east coast. we’ve had our hot days but nothing too terribel and it didn’t last long. Lately we’ve been under clouds and dealing with rain. Didn’t use the pool much this summer now that August is 1/2 over and it will be closing on Labor Day. :? Oh well. But I would have to say that I love the upcoming season for all reasons in your picture. Can’t wait!!

We’ve had a hotter than normal spring/summer. Our hottest temps were actually before the official start of summer, but summer hasn’t been much cooler. We are starting to have some cooler temps and I’m so ready for them. Fall and Spring are my favorite times of the year. Usually cool enough for me to sleep with my windows open at night. Love getting to pile on the blankets to go to sleep. I sleep much better when my house is cooler.

Hi Janelle, the summer has been pretty busy for me. I had to get a job, which limited my time to do a lot of the things I can’t wait to do once school is out. I am taking my national certification in Spanish in a couple of months, so I am taking some Spanish classes, travelled to conferences and a friend’s wedding, administrative meetings for work, writing curriculum, and not as much reading or writing as I would have liked. It’s winding down though, so I can get back to my usual schedule. My favorite season is Summertime. I love the sun…I am an island child after all…lol! I just love the fact that the sun is out for longer periods of time. I do so much outside during that time too, and I am generally happier. The summer here in Northeast Connecticut has been varied: Hot, then really cold, rain and tornado-like conditions, then cool.

Have a great rest of the day everyone. I’ll try to swing by later.

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

    Hi Janelle,
I love this topic. I used to live in Va until I moved to SC in Jan 2011, to take care of my grandfather. This year, the weather has broken several records due to the ridiculous heat. I have NEVER been a hot weather girl. My favorite season is winter!!! To give you an idea of just how hot and humid the weather has been this past year, I have had the AC on since Christmas time. We had turned the AC off and opened all the windows, but when I was baking cookies, the dough was very thin. So we closed everything, flipped the switch for the AC and the next batch of cookies were wonderful. I dream about the day when my feet can touch Montana soil, and I can live in a place that has snow! Enjoy the cooler weather. P.S. I like rain too, because it is the warmer sister to snow! Have a great day everyone!

I’m from the Cleveland, OH area and we have had a record breaking HOT, yes…. :hothot: :onfire1: :onfire: summer! For vacation we went to South Carolina where it was even hotter!

For about the past 2 years, I have been always hot due to that wonderful thing called menopause! Even in the winter.

Spring has always been my favorite season. I love when everything starts over new.

I think this year I am looking forward to any temps where I don’t have to run my A/C….I don’t even care if it is because of snow! :snowguy: <===this would be a nice change!

I love the rain, too! While everyone else is complaining, I’m loving it. not a fan of this heat. Our a/c went out on Friday night (I had a party here on Saturday). Us nw westerners complain if it goes over 80…lol.

We’ve had lots of hot weather, sun and quite frankly I love it. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite season but choosing between heat and freezing my butt of along with shoveling 4 ft of snow, I’ll choose summer!

I am a so cal girl and hating the heat. It’s been triple digits here for weeks and finally they say we should only hit the 90′s. I love summer storms but the weather stays in the surrounding mountains and high desert area and we just get the humidity. It does make coming to work a little easier since I only have a swamp cooler at home.
I love spring and fall weather. Not too hot or cold. Spring mornings have just a hint of a chill and the weather is pretty mild. Fall we get the Santa Anas to blow all the brown air out of the valley and everything is so clear. The down side is the fire danger from the winds.

Considering I am having my boiler replaced as I type- winter. I can never afford to go anywhere else any more. :groan:

It’s been hotter than heck here most of the summer which started way to early and we skipped spring. And until recently, way down on rain.

I will be glad to see autumn get here. It’s my favorite, followed by spring.

:onfire: :hairpull: Hey there; it’s been really hot here in Ks till this last week. Plus no rain in months…the poor trees are so sad they are losing their leaves!! I love summer but this year was really hot and dry. We didn’t go anywhere this summer too busy taking care of my mom and my granddaughter. My vacation starts every night around 10 when everyone is asleep & I get to read!!!

    Have a great week!!

:coffee: We have had our share of heat this summer but that is pretty normal. This morning we had that lovely bay area fog, nature’s air conditioning! I love it. Fall is also my favorite time of year. Here in wine country there is a smell in the air due to picking, crushing & starting the process of making wine, that lets you know fall is on the way. Some of the earliest varities are ready to pick in August & the season lasts until late October or early November depending on the weather! Fall is also the best time on our coast, that is when the weather is at its best. I’m ready!! Rain can come as soon as all the grapes are picked!! Sometimes it comes sooner. I love the rain, listening to it, curling up with a good book on a rainy day. The best!! :reading:

Its been very hot and dry here this year. This past week has been cooler but still no rain. Its going to heat back up in the 90′s so they are saying but I was enjoying the cooler days. I guess the 90′s is better then when we were hitting 100 every day. Please send some of your rain to my town in KY

Hi Janelle, I think I’ve covered all the different temps this summer. We started out moving from NC (where it was about 110 degrees with 95% humidity; seriously) and drove cross country to NV. We went thru the hot/hot/hot weather and when we hit Oklahoma? Those poor folks were experiencing the 120 degrees and fires! It was horrible, but at least we only stayed overnight. New Mexico and Arizona driving was great — in the high 60′s and 70′s for a very long time! Why? Who knows but we were NOT complaining. And then AZ to NV was back in the 100′s…and it’s been hot here ever since we arrived. It’s been raining at least once a day for the two weeks we’ve been here. And it’s monsoon season so lots of flash flooding. But that’s how our summer and August has been so far! All that’s left is unpacking the boxes… :groan:

We could have use some of that rain here on the East Coast. This has been the hottest July, 2nd hottest June and I don’t want to think about May. This has been the 1st week in 2 months that we didn’t have the air conditioner on. My favorite time of the year is the Spring. That is when I am outside planting tomatoes, peppers, herbs, cucumbers, etc. It’s a rebirth and I love it. :cooldance:

    Hi Janelle,

I live in that Southern California were this summer has been much hotter than usual. And we don’t have A/C either. So the Pacific Northwest is sounding wonderful. I would love some rain. I don’t do heat well at all any more!

Spring because winter is over and long warm months ahead with time to wear sandals, no coats, and more daylight.
