Ice Cream and Cheese . . .

Posted by at Aug 13, 2012 6:00 am

I’m sure you’re wondering what today’s blog is about, and yes, it has to do with ice cream and cheese, LOL.  This weekend, in order to keep cool (we were back up in the high 90′s again with no air conditioning), Me, Don and the girls decided to drive down to the coast, and when we do that we usually go through Tillamook and stop at the Tillamook cheese factory on the way home.  I really love this place . . . especially because it’s the only place where I can buy cheese curds (cheese curds don’t have a long shelf life, so you normally can’t find them in a regular grocery store).

For those of you who aren’t familiar with cheese curds, they are small chunks of cheese solids which have been separated from the natural whey present in milk, but not yet pressed into molds to make cheese.  The flavor is mild, with the same firmness of regular cheese, but they are kind of light and springy and the cheese “squeaks” when you bite into it.  At the Tillamook factory, they call it “the squeaky cheese”, and it’s really fun (and tasty) to eat!

The Tillamook factory also has a gift shop, a cafe, and an ice cream shop with all their flavors of ice cream.  Of course, we always have to get an ice cream cone — and we all go for different flavors.  One daughter likes plain chocolate, and the other likes plain coffee.  I always get their espresso mocha and Don goes for the toffee almond crunch.  It’s a great way to end a fun day.

So, how many of you have tried “cheese curds” before?  And if you were in an ice cream shop and could choose any flavor, what would you pick?

Good morning Janelle! Hey everybody, hope all is well with you all. I miss swinging in the vines everyday. Soon, i will be able to again.

I have tried cheese curds, and they are tasty. We used to eat it a lot in Jamaica, and I also had it again once when I was in Wisconsin several years ago. However, it is an acquired taste…that’s your warning.

If I was in a ice cream shop, the flavour I would choose is cake batter. I fell in love with this flavour a few years ago when I went to our local homemade ice cream spot. It was so delicious!

    Have a great day everyone!

    Peace and love,

        Peace and love,

I could never work in an ice cream shop. They would lose money since I would eat all the product. Couldn’t work in a chocolate factory or store either…lol!

Cheese curds seem to be a popular choice here in Minnesota. They are sold in lots of places, even the grocery store. But they are the #1 buy at the Minnesota State Fair! and many other local fairs. When my kids were younger we would stop at a cheese factory across the river in Wisconsin and they also sold ice cream. My favorite flavor is chocolate or chocolate mixed with orange sherbet. I just like the combo of those 2 flavors.

    Hey Janelle,

If you like cheese curds, you’ve got to try poutine. It’s a Canadian Classic, right from Quebec. It’s made up of french fries, covered with cheese curds, covered with gravy. We won’t talk about the calorie count, but it tastes incredible.

It has been awhile since I was in an ice cream store. These days I usually go for the serve yourself non-fat yogurt with both hot fudge sauce & warm caramel sauce. Yummmmm!! 8) For ice cream at the store my favorite it Trader Joe’s Coffee Blast ice cream. Haven’t had it in awhile as the cholesterol count is way high!!! Darn. Ice cream is one of my favorite things. I broke down at Safeway the other day when Starbucks ice cream was on sale. My choice of flavors was Mocha Frappacino & Caramel Macchiato both very tasty. :applause: I splurged as a birthday treat to myself!!!

I’ve never seen cheese curds or tried them. If I see them I will give them a try. I do like cheese & I like cottage cheese.

Glad to hear you and your family had a nice trip.
I have never tried cheese curds, and had never heard about them until your post. As for ice cream, we have a shope down here in SC called Painter’s. They make several homemade ice cream varieties. As a young girl, it was tradition to stop there while we were on vacation, and I always choose the Cookies N’ Cream flavor made from crushed Oreos. Now that I live here, I have only been once, and it was a special request I made for my birthday. All of the local family gathered, and I had Ice Cream cake ice cream with whipped cream and Sprinkl, Mom has Butterfinger, Grandfather and the rest of the family had either chocolate or banana splits. It was yummy!!!
    Happy Monday Everyone!

I grew up in Wisconsin and I absolutely LOVE cheese curds…especially the squeaky ones! Everytime we come home to visit, we have to purchase some at the cheese factory. They don’t even make it to the frig or last as we drive home. LOL!

My favorite ice cream is Blue Moon icecream but I haven’t seen it in a VERY long time so I would choose mint chocolate chip :bananaangel:
