Lately I’ve been on a historical fiction kick. Not romance, necessarily (although one series I’m into reads like romance) but really fascinating historical stuff nonetheless.
First off, I’m totally digging Hillary Mantel’s series about Thomas Cromwell, from whose point of view you see the Henry VIII story. The first book, Wolf Hall, won all kinds of awards, but I found it a bit awkward in places. The second book, though, Bring Up The Bodies, was fabulous! Having played Anne Boleyn on stage, I’ve always had an affinity for her story, but seeing her through Cromwell’s eyes was just fascinating.
I’ve also been reading Elizabeth Chadwick’s series about William Marshal, who was a famous knight in the Henry II/Eleanor of Acquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, John I era. The first book, The Greatest Knight, was really good. The sequel, The Scarlet Lion, was super good and very romantic, detailing Marshal’s marriage to the beautiful Isabelle.
So what about you? Do you like historical fiction?
What are you reading?

:hide: Sorry I don’t like historical anything. My daughter on the other hand is a history buff.
I just finished Jill Shalvis’s Head Over Heels now I am reading Carolyn Brown’s One Red Hot Cowboy Wedding. :readbook2:
Hello! Happy Saturday!!! I like to read historical fiction, especially when it is set around King Henry VIII’s family. The books you mentioned are going on my “To Read” list now. I have read two of Barbara Kyle’s books, that center around King Henry VIII’s family. My favorite out of the two was The King’s Daughter, it had a fast pace, and a hint of romance. I think the author that stands out the most for me, in the historical fiction category, is Carlos Ruiz Zafón. I discovered his book The Shadow of the Wind, many years ago shortly after it had been translated to English, at the local bookstore. I am addicted to his books. The series is set in Spain during the Inquistion, war, and just after the war. He is an amazing author. Well I have rambled too much, so I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Thanks for the recs Nicole!
Sure thing. I hope you enjoy. Have a good rest of your weekend!
Just picked up 24 paperback romances for $2- gotta love garage sales! Will keep me busy for awhile.
 Way to go!!!
Lucky you! That reminds me the local library is having a book sale!!! Not that I need books!!!
Yes, just remember you need books for your mental health. Escapism for even a few minutes is a daily mustfor everyone.
Yes, I do need books for my mental health but I have many!!!! :D I spend a lot of time reading when I could be doing other things, like weeding out, organizing things long overdue!!! But there is always a book or a TV program calling to me.
Happy Saturday. I am also a fan of Historical Fiction. I can’t wait for book number four in the Trace Of Smoke Series by Rebecca Cantrall to come out. The first book starts out in Germany just before the rise of Hitler. Excellent stories so far. The last book was set when the Olympics were in Germany. It is a must read series for history buff.
I just started reading Shawdow of Night by Deborah Harkness. Book number two in the Discovery of Witches. The second book is set in the 15 century England. Shakespeare is just starting to write. I hope I can just some reading time in this weekend while puppy sitting.
Not really into the historicals. Give me a guy in uniform, sigh. I am halfway.through Under Fire by Catherine Mann. It has it all. Great weekend ahead.
I’m reading Taking Chase by Lauren Dane a new to me author. Very good!!
I’m reading Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost. I happen to love historicals. its nice to switch it up. :D
I am a romance reader all the way. This week I’ve read Wildfire, Echoes at Dawn ( love Maya Banks books) and currently on Roses and Rodeo.
I love historical romances… they got me hooked on reading. As for what I have been reading lately… alot of Ellora’s Cave books, wide variety of authors.
Love historicals… finished The White Queen by Philippa Gregory
If you like the Tudor era… check her out..
I have liked a lot of Gregory’s books, but wasn’t totally crazy about The White Queen. I didn’t read the second one…will get to it someday I’m sure.
only historical I like to read is historical romance….I am not sure what to start reading cuz the tbr list is never ending:) I have had a really bad headache which has kept me from reading today…maybe when it goes away i will read the fifth favor by shelby reed.
Always enjoy a good historical. Thanks for the recommendations! Right now I am reading The Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
I just finished reading At Last by Jill Shalvis. Love this Lucky Harbor series & her “chocolate” quotes at the beginning of each chapter.
:waving: Hi Leslie,
I don’t read much in the historical category but when I do it is a romance. I don’t care for the era you are talking about although I’ve read historical romances from that era that were good. I mostly stick to contemporaries & some non-fiction. Before Jill’s book I read, Key West by Stella Cameron. I enjoyed it but it rambled a bit in a few places. It is one of her older books. If I have read her before I think it was in an anthology. I wanted to see what I thought of her writing.
Tell Harlequin sent out a survey on Fifty Shades of Gray. I thought that was rather interesting. I gave them my opinion!! :D No, I haven’t read them.
Everyone enjoy the day! :flag: :flag: :flag: :flag:
That is REALLY interesting about the survey!
Today I am starting Rescue Me by Rachel Gibson. I love historical romance. I’ve read lots of it. Julia Quinn, Kieran Kramer, Eloisa James, Samantha James, Connie Brockway, Sabrina Jeffries, Victoria Alexander, Karen Hawkins, Loretta Chase, Sophie Barnes, Jade Lee. Does Jane Austin count? I love contemporary romance also.
I do like historical fiction, but read a lot more historical romance – plus all the other subgenres of romance that I read. I’ve always loved history, so reading historical fiction is fascinating to me. Right now I’m reading Gini Koch’s Alien Diplomacy, not historical at all (it’s scifi romance), but funny and full of action and an all around great time.
I just started reading Christina Brook’s Heiress in Love from her Ministry of Marriage series and it’s impossible to put down! I was up until 3:00 this morning reading it and plan on having another long night tonight to finish it.
No reading today because I’ve got my rambunctious grandson with me all day (he finally went down for a nap so I had a chance to stop by!).
I downloaded an oldie but goodie “Caroline” by Cynthia Wright for free, I think, yesterday from Amazon. I’m sort of on a mystery kick, I just finished Janet Evanovich’s Wicked Business will start Jennifer Chiaverni”s The Wedding Quilt. Never read her before, but it sounded good. I also picked up a bunch of Susan Elizabeth Phillip’s older books that I haven’t yet read from the library.
Nightshifted by Cassie Alexander, so far so good!
Currently reading Jill Shalvis’ Wilder Brothers series….on last one.
I have read some historical romances. One that stands out above the rest is Sabrina Jeffries The Hellions of Halstead series. Great stories…funny…sexy!
Back Fire by Catherine Coulter and The Reluctant Matchmaker by Shobhan Bantwal.
I don’t really like historical romance. I have read Sarah McCarthy’s Hell’s Eight and they are pretty good.
I think I am going to start Shannon Mckenna’s Tasting Fear. It is suppose to be pretty good.
I used to read a lot of it but I find that I love the paranormals and mysteries. Tonight I am reading Book 2 Grave dance by Kalayna Price. Hubby is working, too bad I don’t have any bon bon’s. I wonder do they still even make them anymore. LOL
The Calling
I like some historical but not lately. I just finished the Calaminty Janye series by Kathleen Backus. The first one was free and I feel in love with it so ended up buying the 6 book box series.
:ohno: :dart: :readbook2: I started historical books ages ago and then contempory and erotic so historical is the past and cannot ever think again to read. Shanna was the first and you can see that was like a century ago. I will pass on hisorical booksl.
marciab
I am reading Summer Days by Susan Mallery..
I like historical’s. I try to read one or two every month, but I really have more contemporary and woman’s fiction on my book shelves.
