A few weeks ago, while I was on vacation in California visiting family, my mother (who is all about household tips, tricks, and shortcuts) shared a few new “tips” she’d come across. Here are a few of my favorites that I’ve used many times with great success.
To keep your plastic containers from getting stained from tomato based foods, rub the inside with vegetable oil before placing the food in the container.
Ant Repellant: To keep ants out of the house, find where the ants are entering the house and sprinkle a “barrier” of cinnamon or any type of ground pepper to block their way. The spices are too hot for the ants to cross
Removing Ink Stains: The best way to get out ink stains is to put rubbing alcohol on the stain – it disappears! This needs to be done BEFORE washing.
Smelly Cooking Hands: Simply rub your hands over a stainless steel utensil under running water. This works especially well for the odor of garlic, onions or fish.
This past trip my mom told me that the best way to clean and disinfect countertops was to use Vodka in a spray bottle. Though I find this particular tip interesting, I think I’ll stick to my 409. However, I did come across this funny graphic that I sent to my mother. LOL.

So, what about you? Do you have any nifty household tips or tricks that you use? Any good ones you can share with us?

I always use a “paste” of borax, sugar and water to kill ants.
My mother always killed ant beds by pouring Cream Of Wheat on the bed. It is safe for your pets
but deadly to ants. :boxer:
I put hydroxide periode on fresh blood stains (before washing)
Good one! I also use hydrogen peroxide on carpet stains. Takes them right out, better than any carpet cleaner I’ve used. learned that tip from a guy who cleaned carpets!
I have a stainless steel “bar of soap” I bought just for washing off onion odors on my hands. It works. Bay leaves are supposed to keep roaches out of cabinets. I guess it works. I put leaves in the kitchen cabinets when we first moved in (the house had been empty for almost a year) and I never did see a roach. To get ground-in dirt stains out of clothes, use Gold Dial soap. The Only, as a fast-pitch softball catcher, would come in from games with really nasty uniforms and socks. One team even had white uniforms. We have red dirt here. Red dirt that is used to DYE clothing. I used Dial soap and then washed her uniforms with regular detergent in the washing machine. The stains came out.
I like that graphic!
Those dry wipe cleaning cloths (think Swifter) make great dust cloths. Dust, then throw them away. To keep your toothbrush clean put it in a cup of peroide, when it quits bubbling the toothbrush is clean.
I love the funny! So well said. I can’t see wasting Vodka to clean counters! I keep a solution of Clorox & water in a spray bottle for cleaning in the kitchen. Works great.
Great subject for today. I love the variety that is here at the Plotmonkeys blog. Thanks to all of you.
Great tip on cleaning toothbrushes!!! I’m going to do that to mine tonight!
Make a small dish of baking soda and water and put near every door for ants; my husband does this for us, told by his Dad.
Also to get smells like onion off of your hands, wash them with table salt. works every time. Also to get rid of yucky morning breath or to freshen your breath in general, get a hint of lemon or lime juice to cleanse your palate. Sprinkling baking soda also helps with ants.
Oxyclean is fantastic :dancebanana: on grass stains (mom’s with football and baseball players
). It works on blood too :threecheers
I will never be without a Mr Clean Magic Sponge again. I use it for stuff even 409 won’t get off. I have no idea what they are made of, but they work.
Use sea salt to clean cast iron cookwear- keeps the seasoning intact and comes out better than soap
The only household hint that comes to mind, is using rubbing alcohol to remove film on glass table tops.
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser will take permanent marker off a leather sofa. Youngest niece went thu a stage with markers when she was 4. Wrote her name on their new sofa and it came right off.
LOL! Glad the marks came off!!!
Thanks for the hints. my less expensive way to keep out bugs and ants is to buy Doublemint gum, unwrap and lay on your counters or where you have ants. makes your kitchen smell good too
Those dryer sheets that make your clothes static free and smell good-clean your tv screen and then rub the sheet over it. dust will not cling to it.
my grandmother always said you only 3 items for cleaning anything and they are good for the environment too. They are lemon juice, baking soda, and vinegar.
if anyone can help me every time I clean the mirrors it looks even worse then before with streaks…and it drives me NUTS… :*&#!:
I use baking soda & vinegar to unclog the drain. Glad people brought up the magic erase sponge. I forgot about that!
