Hair Nation

So I’m finishing up my novella for an upcoming release and my hero is a musician. He plays bluesy rock n’ roll, but for some reason, I needed to listen to the kind of music that I like in order to write him. (I’m not opposed to bluesy rock-n-roll, but I don’t know enough about it to pick out what to listen to.)

So I turned to my Sirius XM radio. I ended up on Hair Nation, which is a station devoted to the “hair” bands of the 80s and 90s. My favorite band, Styx, qualified and they get a little airplay, though my second favorite band, Damn Yankees (featuring Tommy Shaw, who plays in both) gets a little more. I’d play my favorite song here, “High Enough,” but it has a nonsensical video that I’m not a big fan of!

As I’m getting to the love scene, I decided that the raucous rock-n-roll of White Stripes, Twister Sister and Aerosmith weren’t cutting it. I needed ballads. POWER ballads. So I bought POWER BALLADS GOLD, a collection of all the best (relatively speaking) power ballads of some of this era’s best bands. For instance, as I type this blog, “Amanda,” by Boston is playing. I love that song.

It’s hard to pick my favorite of this collection…but this one gets me right in the heart every single time.

This is the Glee version, obviously, because I couldn’t find a decent one actually sung by KISS. How weird is that?

Other favorites:

“When the Children Cry” by White Lion
“Love is on the Way” by Saigon Kick
“Is This Love” by Whitesnake
“Carrie” by Europe

And many more!

So…what do you think about this era in music? Did you listen? What is your favorite ballad? (Doesn’t have to be by a hair band, LOL!)

Beth is one of my favorite songs ever. Love Puck’s version from Glee so much. I listened too all the hair bands in the 80′s and 90′s, and still really love that music. One of the reasons I want to see Rock of Ages is the music…think I’ll wait for the play to come to Nashville next Spring.

I thought the Puck version was particularly good. So emotional. That was a really great episode with all the Lady Gaga songs, too. One of my favorites. (Except for Indina/Lea doing Poker Face…that was probably the stupidest moment in Glee history.)

Wait for the play. Do not see the movie. Other than the music there is not much there. I have seen the musical on Broadway (with Constantine Marioulous from idol) and the touring show. It’s fantastic. They encourage you to get up and dance and sing. We did in NYC. And they made the whole theater like a night club and went around getting drinks for you.

Beth is so emotional too and yet such a simple tune! It gets me everytime too. Probably because of the words.

I was not a ‘hair band’ person during the time of “hair bands”…I love them now, after I saw the musical “Rock of Ages”. I can’t bring myself to see the movie (I cannot stand Tom Cruise and, frankly, I have seen clips of him singing and he can’t sing, no matter what anyone says).

Such a waste of an awesome movie.

I really wanted to see the play before the movie came out, but it never came here. I will probably see the movie. I like Tom Cruise…it’s Alec Baldwin that I don’t like, LOL! But I still want to see it.

YES, Beth by KISS is up there at the top of my list. I grew up listening to those type of songs. My mom took me to my first KISS concert when I was a teen. That being said I listened to a lot of country as well. It was a big toss up.
Some of my other favs were Sister Christian by Knight Rider. Styx and Journey were up there too. :bananaangel:

My Sirus is permanently set on Hair Nation for the most part. I love what they play. I love Poison, Styx, Journey, Kansas, Kiss. I could go on and on. And I have seen most of them in concert.

I’ve been introduced to bands that I missed, like Lita Ford, who will be here this summer with Poison and Def Lepprd. She has a new album out and I can’t wait to go get it.

My fave ballad tho? The River by Garth Brooks, tied with The Dance, which is hubby’s and my song.

I grew up in that era. Love all the songs. Every Rose…by Poison, Love Bites by Def Leppard, Silent Lucidity by Queensriche, Open Arms by Journey, Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi…etc….

I think ballads seem to be more powerful to me when sung by a band that traditionally plays harder, rougher music. Because they step out of their ellement, these songs are more noticed. I also think it psychologically appeals to us the same way a “bad boy” hero in a story does: someone who is characteristically rough around the edges can soften up for love.
