The one thing Don and I haven’t been able to find since moving to Oregon two years ago is a really good Japanese restaurant. We love tempura, California rolls, and tofu and edamame. Especially when it’s well prepared and tastes amazing. About six months ago a new Japanese restaurant opened about a mile away from where we live. We’d talked about giving the place a try, and after reading some great reviews online about the restaurant and the food, we decided to give it a try this weekend.
I’m so glad we did! This restaurant, Yuki Sushi, was AMAZING. We ordered our favorites: miso soup, vegetable tempura, a lobster roll and a salmon roll. They were made to order, tasted fresh and delicious, and made us very happy! We’ll definitely be back for more!
The one thing we’ve never tried before that we finally took the plunge and ordered is sashimi (raw fish). The thought of eating any kind of meat raw just has never set well with me, but I know a lot of people who eat, and love, sashimi. So, we ordered a side of tuna sashimi. Honestly, I was kind of squeamish taking the first bite, but once I got used to the pleasant taste (and different kind of texture), I decided it was quite good! I could tell the tuna was super-fresh (it didn’t taste “fishy” at all), and I think that has to be key in enjoying any kind of sashimi.
Are you a sushi eater? What do you love the most about Japanese food? And if you eat sashimi, since I’m such a newbie, what do you recommend I try the next time I go to Yuki Sushi?

Janelle Denison finds it hard to believe that it’s been nearly 25 years since she first started writing romance novels. At first, it was a way to pass idle time while her husband worked swing shift, but before long it became an obsession to get published. Luckily, she kept at it (it took her over 5 years to get that first book published!) and is now a Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, and USA Today Bestselling author! Now, after selling over 45 plus novels, she finds that her Plotmonkey pals help to keep her stories fresh and unique, and she can’t imagine writing a story without their input. Janelle lives in Oregon with her husband, Don, along with two teenage daughters that keep life interesting.

I like my food cooked, at least the meat. And I don’t do fish. Tofu has a texture that I abhor in my mouth. I don’t mind a Japanese steak house every now and then but that is about the extent of it for me.
but I do know what it’s like to find a really good place you like close to home. We have a steak house here that I love to go to. The problem is deciding what I want to eat! Oh and the desserts are homemade. Hello? Doggy bag anyone??

I love sushi. I’ve only tried tuna sashimi, and really liked it. Tuna is so mild, I can eat it raw without a problem. Crunchy shrimp rolls are one of my favorite sushi rolls, and if I go eat with my friend Fran, she always makes me try something new. Not a huge fan of tofu(it’s the texture), but love it in miso soup.

The tuna sashimi was really good AND mild! I really liked it. I’ll try some other kind of sashimi the next time we go.

I LOVE Sushi and Sashimi – Dragon Rolls are delicious! Spicy Tuna and the usual California Roll, NY or Philadelphia Roll (interchangeable in some places) … YUM!
Comment
I never would have thought you’d eat sashimi! I thought you didn’t like seafood, LOL! I just learned something new about my best friend!

The first time I tried Sushi, I was not impressed. It seemed bland to me, and I’m not a big fan of the sauces. But I decided to give it another try, and I liked it much better. I’m rather daring when it comes to trying food, not too squeamish (though I hate onions with a passion) so it was cool finding out I liked it. I love Japanese steakhouses and watching them prepare the food in front of you.

I’m not a fan of sushi. my husband loves it and he and his buddies will usually do their “man date” at a sushi place. he usually orders the chef’s choice, which I guess is whatever the chef wants to put on the plate. that way he gets to try new things.

I love sushi. I love everything…ok not everything. I still can’t get past the huge pieces of salmon roe and I just never acquired the taste of wasabi.
Tuna is definitely the best for sashimi but a Japanese market opened near my house recently and their yellowtail is awesome. If you can trust the quality of the fish at the restaurant definitely give the yellowtail a chance.
Comment
I’ll try the yellowtail next. Thanks for the recommendation, Amy!

Janelle first to answer your question no I’m not a sushi person, In the future if you are looking for certain food and places to eat if you givem me some notice I have a friend I graduated with (Scappoose OR) who is a food writer there in Portland anytime I need help with food he is my go to. He is going to be on the cooking Channel in August.

Michele — That’s so good to know! My husband and I are always searching for new places to eat in Portland!

There’s a sushi place by my house (just hop over the river, Janelle). I like my food dead (as in dead, cooked, not going to swim, moo or cluck….LOL). I like California rolls, but haven’t had one in a long, long time. Glad you found a new restaurant. I love doing that.

I am definitely not an adventurous eater. So, no don’t do sushi. But, I’m so happy you found a new place to get what you like!

Now Janelle you know I think you are wonderful, a terrific writer and I usually take all your recommendations for good reads and good authors.
and skip the raw stuff.
But ah..ah.. I ‘ll have the wine
Finished Larrissa iones 4 book series and you were right once again. I enjoyed them.
Carly,
kiss me if you can
I finished
I really enjoyed it and read it cover to cover stopping only to eat and powder room breaks. The book is fun and entertaining. The characters are realistic and funny. the family ties are believable and I loved seeing past books character names interwoven throughout the book. I liked it a lot and it was a wonderful vacation read.

Jeannie, I”m so glad you enjoyed Larissa Ione’s books! Her newest one is going to be out the end of next month. I can’t wait. WOOT!

I have no personal experience with sushi, because whenever I even think about eating it, this is what happens….
But I’m glad you found something new that you enjoyed.
I hope everyone going to conference has a fantastic time!!!

I am not really a fish person but I do like eating sushi. One thing I didn’t expect to like but I adore it now is eel. Once I got past the fact it was eel it was really tasty.
Comment
Hmmm, I’m not sure about eel. That reminds me too much of a snake, LOL!

Not a fan of sushi. Sushi…bad.
Comment
Sushi . . .good!

I haven’t had any for a while, ever since my favorite place closed (where else could i get o-toro?). For me, sushi and sashimi are all about texture: the way flying fish roe (tobiko) crunches and pops in my mouth, the firmness of giant clam when I chew it, the melt-in-you-mouth maguro… I also like the seaweed salad for the same reason. To me, these are fun foods.
By the way, shrimp and eel are among the sushi/sashimi meats that are cooked.

I am not a Sushi fan. Usually when it comes to food I am adventurous but I’ve stayed away from Sushi. I’m happy to know that you have found a good place for something you missed. Enjoy!
Carly, I got my notice that my copy of Kiss Me If You Can has shipped, yea!!

Hey I’m a fellow Oregonian!!! There is an awesome sushi place called Mio Sushi. It is amazing. They also havegood yakisoba for the people that don’t like sushi. My
kids love the mango tea and I love the cooked and uncooked sushi. My favorite is the spicy tuna roll. They even have a Portland roll. They have a few locations on the westside and in the NW area. Check it out. Hope you like it. Happy eating=)

We’ll have to check it out! Thanks for the recommendation!!!

I love, love, love sushi! Japanese cuisine is one of my favorites. I love everything about it–the rolls, sashimi, edamame, udon, etc. Regarding sashimi, my favorites are salmon and hamachi (yellowtail).

Love sushi. My favorite item has been the Inari. It doesn’t contain any fish but it is delicious. I also enjoy squid and cucmber salad. The best sushi I ever had was in San Francisco. Since I’ve been in Ohio it’s not as easy to find.

I love sushi, but don’t eat it very often since its hard to find decent sushi here. It probably doesn’t help that I’m rather fussy with the quality of the sushi that I’ll eat since I have spent some time in Japan. I have no problem with eating sashimi, but I did have the opportunity to have octopus sashimi will I was in Japan – it is something that I just couldn’t eat.
The one Japanese food that I haven’t been able to find here that I liked while there is okonomiyaki – its kind of like a mixed pancake, and how its made depends on where you eat it. I had the opportunity to try it in Kyoto and Hiroshima.

all’s I can say is YUCK!!! YUCK!!! YUCK!!!. I hate sea food, fish, lobster, ect….I can’t even stand the smell…which really sucks for hubby because I won’t let it in the house….he has to cook any he catches….at someone else’s house or outside. Honestly…if that smell were in my house I’d puke…no if ands or buts…heck…my neighbor has fish fridays which means every friday she cooks fish…and i can smell it at my house, 3 doors down and I always tell her to stop cooking fish with the doors open because it’s killing me.lol. I can smell it in my house all the way from hers….
She’s being better about it, probably because she doesn’t drive and I bring her everywhere she wants to go (She’s a little old retired lady) and never ask for a dime and doesn’t want me to stop bringing her places but hey, I don’t care why she’s better about it, as long as she is..lmao.
