I wish I could take complete credit for finding today’s guestblogger’s books, but I can’t. All I can take credit for is asking her to blog. Credit for finding her books goes to Janelle
. Those of you in the jungle who know me well know I read what I write and that’s contemporary. I’ve even been known to be a paranormal snob
I know now that is because we’re afraid of what we don’t understand and maybe even intimidated by great talent. When Janelle (who also pretty much only reads contemporary) suggested I read PLEASURE UNBOUND, the first story in Larissa’s Demonica series, I was wary, but I figured if Janelle of all people is recommending it, I’ll try. I WAS HOOKED!!!!! I devoured all three books in a row, and quickly read the fourth!
For those who like to know order: (1) Pleasure Unbound (2) Desire Unchained (3) Ecstasy Unveiled (4) Sin Undone
I immediately Tweeted Larissa whom I was already following and asked her to email me so we could chat. I just was so in awe of her talent … I had to share her with you all! So without further ado, welcome Larissa to the jungle!!!!!!!
TAKING RISKS (or how not to rewrite an entire book)
First, I want to throw out a big thanks to the Plotmonkeys for having me! I kind of did a little fangirl squee when I was asked, but we’ll just pretend that I was dignified and offered a simple, “Thank you.” You know, instead of an insane, “OMG, really??? You want ME?”
Ahem.
Anyway I’m Larissa Ione, and I write in a few different romance subgenres, from hot contemporaries to dark paranormals to erotic paranormal/Sci-fi romance.
My first sale happened in 2006, but I’d been writing for years before that sale, and I have learned A LOT.
See, back when I first started, I wrote what I thought the publishers wanted. Oh, I was writing what I liked to read and what I wanted to write, but I was very…careful. I followed guidelines (and writing rules) to the letter.
And I got very, very close to being published. I was winning all kinds of contests and doing well…getting lots of editor requests, requests for revisions…but I never quite got there.
Until I threw caution to the wind and started taking risks in my writing. I threw out the rules and just went for it.
I sold immediately after that. (Strangely, I also stopped doing well in contests – contest judges seem to love The Rules.)
So what happened? I let gave my voice freedom. I let my imagination and my natural dark side go absolutely nuts. I took everything I wrote to the very edge, because I had once heard someone say that an editor would rather pull you back than ask for “more.”
So I gave “more.” I wrote gritty and dark and raw. Yay, right?
Well, mostly.
My editor has definitely pulled me back on a few occasions. I had to rewrite one scene in particular 4 or 5 times because it was too violent and graphic, and each time I revised it, I made it only slightly less violent and graphic.
I had to rewrite the entire book. And when I say, rewrite, I mean that I only salvaged chapter one. Chapter one. It was painful. I drank a lot of beer. And coffee. Yes, I’ve decided that writing is one part determination, one part coffee, and one part alcohol. (The calculations change depending on how the day is going. The alcohol part seems to grow while the determination shrinks.) So did I finally learn from that book that I had to rewrite? Nope. Why not? Because writing balls-to-the-wall without holding myself back is how I got published. I did something right, and I’m not going to stop doing it. My writing isn’t for everyone, that’s for sure. But I thank my lucky stars that it is for some people, and that I have a fabulous editor who lets me run hard but knows exactly when to tug on my reins when I’m headed for a cliff. So for all of you aspiring authors out there, if you’ve reached a place where you are *thisclose* to being published, but you seem to have hit a wall, maybe throw caution to the wind and see what happens. The worst that can happen is you get a rejection. But the best that can happen could make it all worth it. ☺ *****
ONE lucky person who posts will win their choice of any Demonica book OR a Demonica tote bag if they already have the books.

Carly here – after you’ve finished here, check out a fun interview with me about Bailey and Buddy at Coffee with a Canine. I hope you’ll enjoy!

Carly Phillips would like to take 100% credit for all her stories but the truth is, Carly’s strength is writing family, emotion, funky elderly people and animals. She couldn’t plot her way out of a paper bag, which is why she smartly found her plotmonkey pals early on in her writing career. Thanks to their support, Carly is now a NYT Bestselling author of 23 plus novels. Because writing doesn’t keep her busy enough, Carly is also a wife, a mother of one preteen and one teenage daughter, the primary care giver of her soft coated Wheaten terrier and an expert carpool mom.

OMG, It’s Larissa Ione! Squeeee!!!!
Welcome to the jungle — it’s such a thrill having you here! Loved your post. I think so many new authors make the mistake of “following rules” (who in the heck made those “rules” anyway?), that they don’t write their story the way it’s SUPPOSED to be written. I’m so glad you threw caution to the wind, because the Demonica series is FABULOUS!
If any readers out there haven’t picked up Larissa’s first book in this series, PLEASURE UNBOUND, RUN immediately to the bookstore and buy it to read. You’ll be so glad you did! I’ve devoured all four books and I’m IMPATIENTLY waiting for Sin’s story this summer!
Now, as a fan, I have a question — what’s up after Sin’s story? Do you know yet? Can you share something, anything, for a desperate fan who NEEDS TO KNOW?
Oh, and by the way . . .

See Janelle and Carly, paranormal isn’t that scary…LOL!!! I am so glad you tried it, now you have so many more options of great books and worlds to explore.
Peace and love,
Paula R.

LOL — Janelle, you always make me laugh! And thank you!!! I owe you and Carly dinner and drinks for turning on so many people to my books! :)
To answer your questions…after Sin Undone I’ll be working on a spinoff. The hero will be introduced in Sin’s book. The four-book series will be about the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and will be set in the Demonica world with appearances by a lot of the characters. I’d like to work on some more straight Demonica books too, but we’ll have to see what happens. I have some ideas… *g*

Awesome! I really, truly can’t wait!

Great interview! Ok, now I’ve got to read this book–you’ve captured my attention. And I’m completely cool with gritty and dark if it fits the world of the story. I may not write it, but I enjoy reading it.
Anyway, a trip to the bookstore is definitely in order today. :)
Happy Easter weekend, everyone. :bunny:

Thank you, Gillian! I know what you mean about not writing it, but enjoying it. I LOVE historicals…don’t write them, but I love reading them!
And Happy Easter to you too!

Hi Larissa, welcome to the jungle. I completely understand the whole fangirl moment when it comes to the plotmonkeys…LOL!!! You see it is okay to have the *squeeing* (is that even a word?) fangirl moment. Look at Janelle!!!
It is great having you here. Your blog is very informative, and your voice comes through…nice!!! I am at the beginning of my journey, so it is good to know a few things. Taking risks is something that I shied away from a bit, maybe that is because I don’t know any better. So it is good to color outside the lines in this instance. A few of your points struck me as I was reading the blog…I posted them below:
“Until I threw caution to the wind and started taking risks in my writing. I threw out the rules and just went for it.”
“I gave my voice freedom.”
“I wrote gritty and dark and raw.” Hmmm…so let it all hang out there. That is good to know.
Not to self….Give your voice freedom, just write and let your natural side shine through!
All these points are very important to remember. Thanks again for swinging with us. I have ordered the books I was missing from your series.
Are all your books series or do you have standalones too? Why did you want to write? How did you discover your natural, dark side? Was it your writing that enabled you to latch on to it and bring it to the fore or did you already know that it was a latent beast just waiting for the chance to show itself?
I know, I have a lot of questions, but I am curious. Have a blast swinging in the jungle with us today. I will visit again to see how you are doing.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
Comment
Hi Paula!
Thanks for the warm welcome! Sounds like you’re doing really well with your writing! I really think it’s important to write with some freedom for your voice…makes you more comfortable, and it’ll help make sure you’re writing what you SHOULD be writing.
When I first started out writing romance, I wrote historicals. And I loved it. But I couldn’t quite keep myself from adding really over-the-top elements that just weren’t going to work. Maybe now I could make it work, with the changes in the market and my own personal improvement, but in any case, I switched over to romantic suspense.
Again, my tendency was to throw in over-the-top elements. When I tried to not do that, I ended up with books that just didn’t sound like me. If I had sold…I’d be in trouble. I’d be constantly trying to write books that just aren’t “me,” if that makes sense.
Now, I do have some contemporary stories published (which answers the question about the standalones) — Snowbound, by Samhain, and a couple of Red Sage stories. I wrote them before I let myself go with the paranormals, but I do think they are true to my voice, in part because the Red Sage novellas are erotic (and I tend to write hot,) and the Samhain book was one that I had in my head for years and had wanted to write, so it never felt forced the way some of the other books I’d written did.
As for why I wanted to write? Hmm…well, I just always did. I started writing stories as a kid, and my first stories were always very dark. I LOVED horror, so I think that’s where the dark side of myself took root and grew.
Thanks again for the welcome and the questions, and best of luck with your writing!
I hope I’m making sense…(need more coffee!!!!)
Comment
You make perfect sense. Thank you for answering all my questions…LOL! I will have to check out your other books too. I can’t wait to start reading the Demonica series. Hopefully, my package gets here soon.
This blog is a definite keeper for me. I like RS too and contemps. I am still trying to figure out what genre I would like to be in, but I won’t know until I finish my first ms. Thanks again for swinging with us today. Will see you in a few…duty calls.

Hey Paula,
You are going to love this series! I’m giving copies her Demonica series very soon on robyn’s yahoo group in the next month! I love pimping her books. I think you’ll love them. Check out her other series as Sydney Croft too.
BTW I didn’t realize you were writing! How cool!
Hugs,
Ing

Hey Ing, it is GREAT to see you! I figured I would like it since both Carly and Janelle never read paras, and they love this series. They haven’t steered me wrong yet. I will check into the Croft series.
I don’t talk about my writing much Ing, that’s why you haven’t heard about it.
Peace and love,

I like that type of advice! If every writer followed “the rules”, it would make a repetitious formulaic book. When a writer lets their true voice come out, it helps it stand out from the others and grabs the reader from the first word.
Great advice and thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Debbie! Hope you’re having an awesome weekend!

Welcome!! And I’m sold.
I like paranormal, and I see your name all over the place, but I’ve been trying to curb my reading and focus more on writing. But, forget that! I’m off to the Sony Store (or B&N, if I can’t get the digital format).
And I love your advice. It’s the kick-in-the-butt that I needed. I’ve been taking a class on “Crafting Creative Habits” and it’s really made me take a step back and look at my writing. When I first started writing, I wrote under a pen name and figured no one I knew would ever know I wrote that, and I had a great time.
Now that I know my mother reads my writing, I’ve been stymied.
She’s never criticized or commented negatively. In fact, she’s said, “I really like your writing. I think it’s very good.” It was the next comment, “But I was a little surprised with the….um…what was it…you know, the submission thing,” that has caused my freeze-up.
It’s totally me. All physchological, I realize that. But when I really let my muse run wild, is when I’m happiest. And I’m in the process of recapturing that now. Thanks for the great, great advice and for being here!!
Off to the Sony store…..

Hi Alannah!
Thank you ahead of time for buying my book! I hope the e-version is available…the upheaval in the publishing world is temporarily affecting availability.
Ooh, and I totally understand the psychological effects on writing. Mine doesn’t so much happen when I think on who is going to be reading my work (I pretty much flat out told my relatives to NOT read my erotic stuff,) but comes more from self-doubt after (stupidly) reading a bad review. I know I shouldn’t read them…and I usually avoid them. But every once in a while one slips past my protective net and gets me. I’ve toughened up a lot over the years, but that doubt-demon is a sneaky little bastard sometimes.
When I hit the psychological roadblocks, I read. Always helps, so good luck! :)
Comment
I saw on your blog that some were having problems getting the e-books, but I had no problem on the Sony Ebook site. Already downloaded and ready to go.
And I totally get what you’re saying about the reviews. I got one with my first release and I couldn’t believe how badly it affected me. I had lots of great ones. And I received quite a few e-mails from readers who really enjoyed the story. And what could be more positive confirmation than that?! But that one review really sucked the life out of me for a while. I made it a vow to never read another one.
It’s been easy, because I haven’t gotten any further reviews!
Comment
Alannah, please get back to writing. I really want to read more of your stories.

Welcome to the jungle Larissa! I have to do a little “squeeing” of my own here. I read Pleasure Unbound on Janelle’s recommendation and went out to buy the next 3 in the series when I was about half way through I was loving it so much. I love your Demonica series and can’t thank Janelle enough for the suggestion.

Hi everyone!!! Awesome to be here! I’ll reply to everyone individually, but wanted to mention that the book with the scene I had to revise and the book I had to REWRITE were different books. I think all that beer made me miss a transition between those paragraphs or something…
Anyway, thanks to everyone for stopping by!
Off to reply more…

Can I ask what book you had to completely rewite? As an author, I feel the pain you must have gone though having to do that!
Comment
It was Ecstasy Unveiled. I turned it in at 102K, and then had to toss 100K in the revisions. It was traumatic. OMG, that book nearly killed me. After the complete rewrite, I had two more rounds of major revisions. For some reason, that book just gave me hell.
BUT…I’m so thankful for my editor. The book is much, much better for all the work, and I’m happy with how it turned out. My poor editor has the patience of a Saint!
Comment
Comment
Yeah, that book nearly did me in. I ended up turning it in with a final word count of 107K. So altogether I wrote around 205K words for that book.

Welcome to the Jungle, Larissa. Your books have been on my radar forever. I really need to bump them up to the top of the list. Like right now!
Thanks for sharing about your rewrite. I’m in the process of doing that now. I had to chunk the first 8 chapters and then figure out how to incorporate some of that information back into the story at later junctures. I broke some rules with it, and quickly discovered some rules really shouldn’t be broken. I still hope I’m pushing the envelope with the story but won’t know for sure until it’s finished and in my CPs hands for an opinion.
Comment
Hi Silver! Oh, I feel your pain. I hate losing even a scene, but entire chapters? *shudders*
Hope the book turns out the way you want it to!

It’s great to be back in the Jungle. Organizing all of our tax stuff so we could get it to our CPA has kept me away. And I had to talk to him more than once which I don’t like doing because he has the “Why don’t you focus on cooking and housecleaning because you’re too dumb to do anything else” attitude. In all fairness he does a good job and doesn’t charge us out the wazoo. I’m not sure if it’s just me he doesn’t like or all women. But I reframed him and now I see him as a cockroach sitting at his desk, his attenna twitching, his little insectasoid fingers punching numbers into his calculator. And he’s wearing this huge sunbonnet.
I feel so much better now.
Without further adue WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE LARISSA! When you popped on to the blog recently I went over to your web site and read an excerpt. I was floored by your talent. You’re an amazing writer!
Now I have to read all of your books of course. I love it when I find a new author.
Great blog about not following the rules. I would love to do that. It must have been totally liberating. I long to just break away and let it rip. But writer’s fear holds me back. I hate being embarassed or humiliated. A rejection is one thing but feeling like the editor/agent was chuckling while they read your pages–and not in a good way–is too much.
Carly, love the interview about Buddy and Bailey. So adorable! It makes me want to cuddle and kiss my little guy. I think I will!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone,
Cher :bunny: :eggs:
Comment
Hi Cher! OMG, your CPA sounds so rude! Glad he at least doesn’t charge you too much. Yikes.
As far as not letting yourself go…well, if what you’re doing now works for you, then that’s great! I think some writers feel better with more control over their writing. I have a friend who is very meticulous, careful, and structured. She writes better that way than when she does exercises designed to create a free-flow of writing. Even when she goes back to fix the raw material, it just doesn’t work for her.
Now, if what you’re doing ISN’T working for you…maybe try letting go a little. I get the fear; the only reason I really let myself go is that I’d just lost everything in hurricane Katrina…and I mean, EVERYTHING. On top of that, I’d gotten a rejection on a project that was SO close to publication — it had gone through two rounds of editorial revisions AND line edits. And got rejected just a day after I came home to find my destroyed house.
At that point, I figured, screw it, I have nothing left to lose. I’ll write what I want. What’s a rejection compared to losing my house and everything in it? Several of my neighbors were killed in the hurricane, and I had to go live with my mom for a year while my husband stayed behind to live on his boat. My son was uprooted, his toys and friends gone, and even his goldfish died. I’m not saying all this as a sob story, but to explain what it finally took for me to get over my fear.
So I totally get it. I’m definitely more of a “better safe than sorry” person, and not usually one to gamble.
You could always try the “go crazy” thing with a short story or something, and see where it goes. Good luck!
Comment
Oh. My. God. That is horrible! I’m so sorry that happened to you. And to have your neighbors killed. Just awful. That really puts things in perspective doesn’t it. And for me too. If I ever whine about anything again I want someone to wack me in the head with an iron skillet!
And I’m not kidding!
It makes me even more thrilled for your success. I hope your books burn up all the bestseller lists! God knows you deserve it. Your story has given me the courage to give my fears a swift kick and just go for it!
Take care and have a wonderful Easter!
Cher :bunny:

Oh, you have a terrific web site btw. It really makes a statement.
And rewriting an entire book. Oh, God I feel your pain. But apparently it turned out great. Can’t wait to read it.

I’ve read all the books in the Demonica series and they’re great.
They’re like the demon world meets General Hospital or maybe ER would be a better analogy. Look forward to reading your paranormals in the future.
And for anyone out there who thinks demons wouldn’t be your cup of tea, I urge you to give these books a try. I had a friend who said she wasn’t really interested in the demon thing and I told her just to read the first book anyway, she wouldn’t be disappointed, and she wasn’t. Demons, especially for contemporary readers, can conjure up certain stereotypes that might make them shy away from these books, but Larissa delivers and her demons are anything but stereotypical.

Larissa, whatever process you use to get your characters and ideas down on paper, roll with it! It works! Hi Kait!
Great question. Wow…I’m not sure. I think it depends on the person. Contests got me in front of editors and got me read, got me requests for fulls. But they never resulted in sales. I think that a lot of time can really be wasted on them…I see finalists finaling in the same contests over and over every year…for the last TEN years. Often, they are recycling the same manuscript. I think that if you’re finaling/winning and getting requests but not selling, you might need to re-evaluate. Obviously you are talented, but maybe it’s time to step things up or make some changes to hit that next level.
I think contests can definitely have their uses, but they can also be a waste of time at a certain point, you know?

Thanks for the great post Larissa! Just goes to show you that what works for one person does not always work for the next. Everybody’s work process is different and you have to go with what works for you and gets you published like you did. Thanks for sharing. welcome to the Jungle Larissa. :bunny:
that being said…I’ve never read any of your books. gasp…I know I know…me not reading any author is amazing right Janelle? Carly? Leslie? Julie? LOL.. Honestly, I have to be in the mood to read paranormal or at least I used to have to be, I’ve been getting better since Twilight saga and Harlequin doing the nocture and paranormal type books. My sister on the other hand devours those kinds of books but can’t stand to read regular romance books, while I will read each and everyone one I can get my hands on…lol.
Anyway. I will have to look yours up and read them, I’m sure my sisters has your books….she has all those kinds of books.
Good Luck and thanks for coming by.

Ever since I read your books Larissa, I could never go back to reading ‘cautioned’ books. Thank you for that, who wants caution anyways!
You rock!

Thank you for stopping by today Larissa. I am ashamed to say I still have not read your books but I do have them on my wish list. Since retirement I have to stay on a budget with my book buying and I am waiting for the day I can order or buy locally. I am hoping for a Gift Card to my local book store for Mothers Day. LOL.. I know, long way off, but not really. I have been an avid reader for over 55 yrs and began reading blogs about 9 mos ago. I have read some of about every kind of book written. I think I have read every review on your books and loved them all. Just keep doing what you are doing and you will have a very large stack of books behind you in no time. Thanks again for stopping by and thanks to Carly and PlotMonkeys for asking you tovisit.
