Talk Amongst Yourselves…
Leslie Icon

I’m deep in I-gotta-finish-this-book-like-last-week and am too brain dead to think of anything beyond these couples having another wild wedding night. (fun fun fun!)

So, please, chat amongst yourselves. What’d you think of the Oscars? (I thought they were dull as dishwater.) What’d you think of Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin as hosts? (Double dull. Love them individually, together they had no chemistry and the jokes fell entirely flat.) What about the winners? (Love Jeff Bridges, love the guy from Inglorious Basterds, love Sandra Bullock, haven’t seen Precious.) And the Best Pics? (I saw 5 of the 10 nominees and ranked The Hurt Locker # 4 out of 5 and Avatar # 5 out of 5, so obviously I’m out of step with the Academy. I liked Inglorious Basterds, District 9 and Up better than either of those) The Hurt Locker was a good, solid movie, but it left me cold and rather unmoved, afterward. It was interesting, but not compelling, the characters never really grew or changed. Just overall “meh.”

What about the dresses? I loved Helen Mirren’s and Sandra Bullock’s and the chick in the yellow dress who was giving out awards! Hated Sigourney Weaver’s.

Anyone else?

Leslie

LeslieLeslie Kelly used to say she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up, but then she discovered Nancy Drew books. Being a flashlight-under-the-covers-nose-in-book reader throughout her childhood, she couldn’t think of anything else she’d rather do as an adult than continue to lose herself in fictional stories. Her real life marriage of 20 years to the man of her dreams is a constant reinforcement that happily-ever-afters really can happen…and that they’re worth writing about. Living in Maryland, Leslie spends her non-writing time laughing a lot with the above-mentioned romance hero and their three daughters. Though an author of more than thirty sexy, contemporary comedies, she has recently branched out to write dark romantic suspense under the pseudonym Leslie Parrish.

Huh. Well I didn’t watch the Oscars. Finally saw Avatar 3D though. Good but not outstandingly so. Made me a little sad actually.

Been reading some YA books lately – love Simone Elkeles & Jennifer Echols. Anyone else?

I actually enjoyed the Oscar’s for a change, maybe because I get to see them from a whole new viewpoint.

Heather was thrilled Avatar didn’t get any of the really good awards. And we were overjoyed that Hurt Locker and Bigelow both won. I would have loved Basterds to have won more but QT will get his but the competition this year was big.

I did think Sandra was best dressed and the best acceptence speech by far. I was also glad to see that they dropped the number of stupid filler acts. The dancing sequence was bad enough.

Did you notice on the In Memorium they left out Bea Arthur and Farrah Fawcette? Someone needs to be kicked in the butt for that. :*&#!:

agree about being glad Bigelow won over james cameron, nice to see his ex beat him out… Don’t care for him much anyway…he always seems to leave his partners/wife for a new person he’s working with. He’s been married like 5 times. And I remember him leaving Bigelow for Linda Hamilton (used to love watching her on THE BEAST) then leaving her for Suzy who he met on Titanic. It’s just the way he is and personally…I have no respect for someone like that. IT’s a good thing I saw Titanic before I found out he was cheating on his wife for one of it’s stars because I wouldn’t have watched it otherwise…It’s also why I refuse to watch Avatar or anything else he’s done since, I don’t think slimeballs, even talented ones, should be encouraged.

I missed the first hour due to abc’s greediness.

I loved Demi Moore’s and Sandra Bullock’s dresses. SJP – yuk, and Cameron’s (Avatar) escort’s blue dress was awful, Didnt like those 2 young women with the awful bottom’s to their dresses – the blonde was nominated for something – black dress and the other woman a purple dress. The purple dress worn by Scarlett Johansen would have been fine it it didnt have those flower things on her boobs. There were more I could comment on both ways, but it is too early in the a.m.

I saw: The Blind Side – Excellent – so was Sandra. Up in the Air – good movie, Clooney v.g. – but movie a bit depressing. Julie Julia very good and Meryl v.g. So was Tucci. Saw Nine, didnt care for it. Heard Crazy Heart and Bridges was good.

I did watch the Oscars, but only because my brother ended up coming in to watch them. They were ok, but way too long as always. I had only seen Up of the movies in the running for best picture. I was very excited Sandra Bullock won and thought her dress was about the best one of the night.

For the most part, the dresses reminded me of an episode of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares gone horribly wrong. The folks on Project Runway could probably have done better with newspaper, but hey…who am I to talk as I sit here in pull-on cotton sleep pants, a tank top and a hoodie… Sandra Bullock’s dress was absolutely stunning and elegant, though!

I missed the early part watching Amazing Race (I know the cowboy brothers – :waving: ) and was a bit sorry I tuned in for the end of the Oscars. Boring. That dance number was a real :wtf: moment (and this from a former dancer!).

Leslie, get back to :posting: Me, too.

I did love Sandra’s speech when she said, “this movie is for the Mommies who raise babies who no one wants’. I cried at “The Blind Side” only because I have my oldest with autism and I know a lot of families who struggle with that. I hope that people ’see’ how hard I fight for him and how much I fight for people like him. I push him so much to do well and to be successful. Anyway..that movie really ’spoke’ to me and that line really resonated with me.

      Boy, I am chatty today…Sorry!

Katie, I have a special needs daughter so I can relate. I think the biggest misconception about parents with special needs children is people don’t realize they are truly a gift. :flowers4you: My daughter has taught me more than I have ever taught her. She isn’t autistic, she has mild to moderate mental retardation. She’s a beauty and the sweetest most loving kid on the planet.

All the best to you and your son,

        Katie & Cher,

I had my Down’s Syndrome daughter almost 47 years ago. She was my lst child, I had a great pregnancy, &, after her birth, thought my life was over. She has turned out to be the most compassionate, kindest & lovliest person I know, &, even if I could change circumstances, I wouldn’t change having her. She has multiple medical challenges, but, every day, she has a great day. All the rest of us could learn from her.

Hmmm…methinks Leslie’s deadline has made her cranky.

I loved the Oscars! I loved Steve Martin and Alex Baldwin…I laughed hysterically enough for my daughter to come find out what was so funny. The stare-down with George Clooney, the roast of the nominees…all fabulous. I loved the dresses…though Bullock was top-notch, loved Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz (who is always best dressed), but my favorite of the night was Elizabeth Banks (whom I’ve never heard of.) She wore the gray dress and presented the technical awards. Beautiful. I thought Neil Patrick Harris was a fabulous way to open.

I love the way they do the best actor-actress nominations with the friends who come up and talk about the person. It’s very personal and touching. I tivo through the dance numbers because they’re always ridiculous. Leave that for the Grammy’s, thanks.

Bea Arthur probably wasn’t in the In Memoriam part because she wasn’t really a film actress. The Emmys did a big deal and I think the Tonys probably will if they didn’t already. She was more a star of TV and stage than film. As for Farrah, didn’t she die right before the awards and was honored previously? They count up until the end of January, I think.

I thought the worst dress of the night was Charlize Theron with the swirly cinnamon buns on her breasts and Miley Cirus, whose bodice was simply too tight. Wasn’t a big fan of Maggie Gyllenhal, but it’s really hard to pull off a print.

I watched all the way until the end (using Tivo to go through the boring parts…maybe that’s why I liked it so much) and thought Tom Hanks went a little too fast at the end, not that he had a choice because they were right up to the midnight hour.

But all in all, I thought it was great!

I loved Maggie Gylenhall’s dress (of course, I would shorten it and add little spaghetti straps…I am trying to find a colbalt dress for a wedding this summer and I thought, that would be perfect…typically, I go for black dresses for myself and I am having trouble finding a colbalt one…I digress..typically, I wouldn’t go for prints, but if I had changed it up a little, it would be perfect for this wedding I have to go to!). LOL.

Did not like Miley’s (too small and didn’t work for her top) and the Charlize donuts,…nuf said.

Julie, Like you, loved those personal stories by co-workers of the male & female actor nominees. They were very touching, & seemed authentic.

I was so happy for Sandra Bullock (loved her dress, too), because I listened to an ESPN interview with the real man (then a boy) her character adopted, who is now a NFL player. Even with the small scene shown on the telecast, I was tearing up. Can imagine how difficult it would have been for a white Southern woman to raise an African-American child.

Also loved that comment about mommies raising children nobody wants.

Oh, Julie, you’re right, I forgot to mention Neil Patrick Harris’s opening number–it was wonderful! And maybe that’s why the rest of the show seemed so flat to me because I absolutely loved that opening and was prepared for the rest of the show to be great. And it just wasn’t. (Though I also really liked James Taylor’s song.)

I had 2 other couples & a few teens over for an Oscar party, and every one of us felt the same way. Just “meh”.

I don’t know if it was just overly rehearsed or what, but nothing felt natural or the least bit genuine. I far preferred it when Steve Martin hosted by himself. (Or Jon Stewart, Whoopie Goldberg, Chris Rock, Hugh Jackman or Billy Crystal…all great hosts all on their own.)

Oh, also forgot the Tina Fey/R.Downey Jr. moment–that was great. They should co-host next year!

As for Bea Arthur & Farrah Fawcett, it is absolutely shameful that they weren’t included in the tribute. Farrah Fawcett, who actually made movies and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Extremeties, died the very same weekend as Michael Jackson…who WAS included, for some strange reason. (He made, what, one movie? The Wiz?) Bea Arthur also made movies — Lovers & Other Strangers and Mame right off the top of my head.

It was really rotten (and short-sighted, IMO) of the producers to leave them out in favor of people nobody in the TV audience had ever heard of.

Best two parts of the show in my personal opinion….Neil Patrick Harris opening the show (He should have stayed on to host the whole event because it sucked otherwise) and the ending when Sandra Bullock won for best actress…. it was the whole reason I watched was because I was waiting to see if she won…I love her…and love her hubby Jesse James…lol. Otherwise the only memorable moments were actually moments where I felt sorry for people…Ben Stiller as Avatar guy…. I wanted to cry for him because that fell so short of anything even remotely funny….and when that B#*&^% of a producer woman came up and Kanye Wested her director who was giving a someone heartfelt speech until she came up and ruined it…I wanted to B$%&( slap her myself. Some people have no class, she was one. I’d hope that people who saw that disgusting display would think twice about wanting to ever work with her. And what the heck was up with that huge tribute to John Hughes???? I don’t even think the audience thought that he deserved all that….what about Patrick Swayze and others who died last year…some of whom the academy should be ashamed with themselves for forgetting to mention. There was a lot better, more important people that John Hughes that should have been immortalized instead. IMO anyone with a screen actors guild card should be included if you are going to do it at all.

There were so many pseudo-wedding dresses at this year’s Oscars! Lots of whites and silvery shimmery stuff. Kind of odd. And all the strapless gowns–ladies, there is a way to have them fitted so you don’t have to hunch over and/or jerk them up every five seconds!

I didn’t watch the Oscars. It’s always so boring I just wait and check the Internet the next day or the paper to see who won. I love Jeff Bridges–glad he won and Sandra Bullock too. Haven’t seen either of their movies though. The only movies I have seen that were nominated were Up and Inglorious Bastards. Liked them both. I love Steve Martin. Alec Baldwin can take a flying leap–he also needs a zipper in his mouth.

On to the dresses: I looked them up on the Internet. SJP’s yellow dress was awful, so was Nicole Richie with that Bohemian thing she had going on. I hated Sigourney Weaver’s dress as well- it looked like draperies she pulled on as an after thought. Demi Moore looked like a party favor as did Vera somebody in the pink ruffled number. What’s with all the ruffles? Charleze Theron who is so beautiful–why did she have to wear that stupid dress? It almost looked like hands cupping her breasts from the back. Maggie Guillenhall (sp) made a very bad choice in that print dress. And what was up with J Lo’s dress? It looked like she was hiding a growth or something. And Zoe Saldana, whoever she is in that Rio de Janeiro purple number–all she needed was a bowl of fruit on her head and she could be in a Chiquita banana commercial. And Diane Kruger–What the heck was she wearing? I can’t figure it out.

Helen Mirren was a vision in her dress. I loved Cameron Diaz’s dress and Sandra Bullock’s.

That’s it for me. I have totally dissed just about everyone and proud of it.

I guess I needed that because I had not one but two panic attacks yesterday…Keep your fingers crossed that I don’t have anymore today.

Hey Les, I didn’t watch the Oscars much. I was too invested in a college Women’s game Tennessee versus Kentucky…Championship game…need I say more? I did see some of the opening with Neil Patrick Harris though, he will always be Doogie Houser MD to me though. It was great! I saw dresses on Extras and Access Hollywood…Sandra Bullock’s dress was pretty. I also liked Meryl Streep’s dress. Loved the fact that Sandra won for her role. She is one of my fave actors, and she seems to be very genuine.

Les, can’t wait to read about another wild wedding night. Love Gloria and Tony…well, I loved the whole book, but I was really banking on learning more about them. I miss that family. Happy writing okay.

Julie, I’m so glad that I was not alone in liking the Oscars!! Sandra Bullock’s dress was so classy & elegant, probably my favorite of the night. Helen Mirren always is a beautifully dressed woman. Some of the dresses I did not care for at all but then I am so far from a fashionista it is almost pitiful!! I am all about comfort. My take is that, who I am to critize the experts in the field. :? I have no idea how some of them can even sit down in those gowns!!

Things I did like, the presentation of the nominees by friends/co-workers, Katherine or is it Catherine Bigelow winning for Hurt Locker. By the way, since no one knows the winners until the envelope is opened is that really why Barbara Striesand presented… Anyway, I mostly enjoyed despite that it is not a perfect presentation.

Great subject for today. Fun to see everyone’s comment and once again realize what an interesting diverse group we are. :applause: :flag: :flowers4you:

I have to agree with Leslie. BoRiNg! I was thrilled for Sandra Bullock who looked stunning. The cinnabun dress was a good way to draw the attention away from a beautiful girl to “what the heck was the designer thinking?” I thought Barbara S. looked old even with all her money. Ysk, Tsk. I loved Avitar and think Cameron’s x won because he said in several interviews he wished his x would win. She sure didn’t give him the same warm and fuzzies.LOL Not to bash a teen but Miley Cirus
needs posture classes. Put them shoulders back girl. Did I mention I was tickled pink for Sandra Bullock. It is so nice to see her happy and happily married too.
Bet their relationship would make a heck of a romance novel.

Glad that Sandra Bullock won, she deserved it and I liked her gown.
