Getting to Know You…Getting To Know All About You…
Julie Icon

So…do you have the earworm yet? :ohno:

Sorry. I couldn’t resist.

As I said last week, I’m starting a new Wednesday tradition of giving away books until I have sufficiently emptied my overfilled closet shelves. In celebration of this weekend’s Superbowl, I’m giving away TWO sets of books: A copy of New Orleans Nights, the reprint of my New Orleans set Temptations, PURE CHANCE and INSATIABLE, plus a copy of a little known novella I did for NAL in a collection called DARE ME with Cherry Adair and Jill Shalvis. My store, Dare to Desire, is a very sexy contemporary with a little bit of romantic suspense thrown in. Like the other two, it is set in New Orleans.

Can you tell I’m rooting for the Saints?

I really don’t care about football and I will likely not watch the game, but I do love the city of New Orleans and I’m not even sure where the Colts are from anymore. But it’s a reason to give away books, so there you have it.

I love setting books in New Orleans…I think I’ve done at least four there. Maybe more. I haven’t done any post-Katrina because I feel like I need to visit again and get a real sense for the place as it has evolved after the disaster.

My new book will be set in and around New York City and Albany. I’ve never been upstate, so I’ll be doing a lot of research. The three books after that will likely be set in Southern California, a setting I haven’t used that often–probably San Diego. I love San Diego, though. Another reason for a research trip?

So…in the comment section you must either tell me who you are rooting for in the big game or tell me what your favorite CITY setting for a book is. Or both. Feel free to be chatty. We don’t charge by the word, here.

Winners to be announced Sunday, per usual…which reminds me…if you enter our contests, you need to check back on Sunday to see if you won. If you email us and you haven’t gotten a response, email again a couple of days later. Sometimes, emails do go astray. But usually, you’ll hear back from us within 24 hours to acknowledge that we received your email. Thanks for playing!

Julie Leto

JulieBy all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold nearly thirty books to three publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her husband, daughter, spoiled dachshund, enormous guinea pig and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

NYC and Albany? Coming to visit me here in little ole Troy?? Huh?? :cheer: It will be interesting to read something about here not written by a local. I have to go thru my old books as there is someone I was reading who also set theirs in Syracuse and I don’t remember who.

I love to read ones set in Boston too. And now LA because I am learning the area what with the Spawn living there.

I’m rooting for the Saints. Gotta. Never been to NO but will someday. I watch the game no matter who is playing just for the commercials.

I love your books, but don’t enter me as I have both of them.

Well, since the Vikings didn’t make it, I can’t say I care one way or the other LOL.

I like Chicago (because I live here) but I also like exotic places that you don’t hear about a lot. Small beach cities or maybe a big city outside NYC & LA. How about St. Louis? Cheyenne? Charlotte? Minneapolis? Vegas is fun but it’s been done quite a bit. So I like something a little different. Right now I’m thinking anywhere where there’s a beach and warm sun is just about perfect!

Actually my favorite team, The Packers didn’t get in. me. I’d rather see a team win that hasn’t been there before, so the Saints would be my choice to win.

I actually like the made up towns: Tyler, Wisconsin (series), Diana Palmer’s Jacobsville, Texas, and Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove, Washington.

I like New Orlean’s as a setting for romantic suspense. New Orlean’s has that air of mystery, a dark history, voodooism and corruption. Heather Graham, Alison Kent and Metsy Hingle set several of their books there. I haven’t read your New Orleans nights series YET! I believe the Hotel Marchand series was set there too.

I loved Ashley Judd and Tommie Lee Jones in the movie Double Jeopardy! The creepy cemetary crypts!!!

I am not a big football fan and since I live in NY and neither team is in it, guess leaning towards Peyton’s team. I will be rooting for the score as I have a box in a pool. And since I live about 1 hr from NYC, would say NYC is a good city for a setting. New Orleans is good too with the cajun heroes! Lots of good settings – Paris, Italy, the west – cowboys make awesome heroes. :bananaangel:

I don’t follow football at all, so I could not possible care less about who wins the SB.

I do however, love to read about cities where I’ve lived so I can say, “I’ve been there!” At the request of my children, I have begun reading the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. For those who don’t know, the first book is “The Lightning Thief” and won several awards.

In that book, Percy and his friends travel across the country in the course of their adventures and one of their stops is in St. Louis. Percy falls from the Gateway Arch into the Mighty Mississippi and comes up (yes, he survives!) next to a floating McDonald’s. Some readers might think that’s just one more fantastic fiction in a book full of them, but no. It exists. I’ve been on that floating McDonald’s!

I love books set in England and Scotland–because I’ve never been, so if the facts are a little off, it’s not going to bother me one bit. I love books set in Maine, because I have been, and it’s a great memory-jogger for me.

Books set in big cities fascinate me— I’ve never lived in one. Just reading about the characters getting from one place to another makes me glad. But it’s fun when you know the author’s done her homework and so it’s like a free visit there…I have a good imagination, all it needs is an author’s detailed description and I am there. I need to read about someplace warm! :snowguy:

I’m cheering for the Saints! I’m a TN Titans fan, so I never cheer for the Colts(in our AFC South division). I really hope the Saints win, as it is their first trip ever to the Super Bowl.

New Orleans is one of my favorite setting for books. I also love books set in Chicago, and would love to read one set in Nashville.

I am a baseball fan; not sure if I will watch the Superbowl – maybe a bit of it. Have no favorite team.

Not fussy where a book takes place. I have read some books taking place in NO and they were v.g. Anyplace in the states is great or how about Hawaii – that would be great.

The only time I watch football is if the Broncos are playing. Otherwise, I don’t care. I’m really glad our Broncos aren’t in the Super Bowl. We love our Broncos, but they didn’t deserve to be there this year. And quite frankly I didn’t want to sit there on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and cursing while I watch them get stomped by the Colts. :boohoo:

    Okay, I’m calm now :meditate:

    On to book settings:

My first book was set on a made-up island off the coast of Maine. I made up a mountain town in Colorado for one of my books. I set a book in Montana. I set a book in Denver and Scotland.

Dream settings: England, Italy, France. I have a future project that will be set in the Smoky Mountains and Greece. It’s going to be interesting to write.

    Confession time…

I am reading my first J.R. Ward book–Dark Lover. It was her debut novel. I have said in the past that I don’t read vampire books unless they are written by my friend, Jeanne Stein. However, I freely admit that I am now a card-carrying member of the vampire fan club. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book I’m reading. Now I have to read them all. I have been totally “sucked” in. :giggler: Sorry for the pun. Couldn’t resist.

    Have a great day all,

    Cher

P.S. My TBR pile is mountainous so don’t include me in the drawing.

I’ll root for your team, the Saints, since the Packers are out (hubby is a cheese-head from Milwaukee) and the Vikings are out (Brett – sigh).

All my stories are set in small towns, based on the places I lived or visited frequently. I’m revising a RS which takes place partly in a small town (see?) in France. Google Earth – where would I be without you? And I’m planning a story with a setting in Venice, just so I can go back for further research LOL.

    Have a great writing day!!

I really want the Saints to win but my even saying that is like a death wish for them. This is the honest to goodness truth. Every team that I have pulled for since New Year’s Day (with the exception of Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and the Cardinals in their first playoff game) – both football and basketball – has lost! :hide:

It’s to the point now, that when my husband comes home from work and looks at the scores on television, he’ll say, “Ugh, you must be pulling for….” fill in the blank with whoever is losing. And usually losing badly!

My oldest is rooting for the Colts, simply because my youngest is a huge Saints fan (although oldest is a die-hard Rams fan). Sigh. Should be interesting.

I’d actually like to see the Saints take it. When we were in NO about 10 years ago, we went to the Saints-49ers game (Die-hard 9ers fans, me & hub). Of course, the 9ers got crushed. It was the end og Garcia’s bad showing. The fans there were so sweet. We got a lot of “We’ve been there, we know” rather than being ridiculed for being in our 49er gear. LOL!! I still remember watching them as the Aints, LOL. And I wonder how Archie Manning feels about this game, now that his blessed Saints are in the Super Bowl, but are playing against his son?

I am a Patriots fan therefore I am NOT allowed to cheer for the Colts! At least according to my mother and my 7 year old son! So I guess that makes me a temporary Saints fan :cooldance:

I like it when books are set in smaller towns. The type where it is still safe to let your kids walk home from school or walk to the store and everyone knows everything.

I also like when they are set in big cities that I know nothing about. It is kind of cool to read about a place in a work of fiction and then go Google to check out some real pictures!

I love reading about places that I know. Especially if the author has done their research and throws in landmarks, proper travel time, etc. ;) Nothing throws me out of a story more than incorrect geographical information.

And oh the memories! I grew up in Vermont and Albany used to be THE BIG CITY that we would go to for back to school shopping! We knew those malls so well! Nothing like driving 2 hours just to go clothes shopping! LOL!

There are so many great cities I’ve been to that I love to read as settings because I can read and think ‘I remember that place – it was great’. But, if I have to go with one, I’d say San Francisco.

Since I live in northern California, I love San Francisco (does that give you a hint as to what team I love!) as a setting in a good book but keep facts straight! I am aware as a fictional story there are allowances but some things should be kept to the facts!! Fictional towns are also good and it is fun to read about places I’ve never been, it is the story that counts more than where it is.

Go Saints!! Here in my house we decided early on in the season that we would cheer for the Cardinals (our hometown team) and the Saints (because mommy loves New Orleans). I’m not a huge football fan, I prefer hockey, but my son certainly is which means we watch the weekend games. That boy lives and breathes sports and gets up each morning to check scores before school- he’s only 10! Can you imagine what he’ll be like when he’s a teen, or beyond? At least his interests are sports related and not something creepy or dangerous- my worrying mom heart really hopes it stays that way. Anyways…We’ll be watching and having our annual football party here at home- it’s just us and we make yummy treats and dance during the halftime show :snoopy:

Favorite setting for a book? I actually enjoy reading books set in places that I’ve been or lived because it’s fun being able to recognize things. On the other hand, I also like reading about places I haven’t been because it gives me a chance to mentally visit. So my answer is: I just love all books!!

I’ve been watching football since I could say touchdown so obviously the Superbowl is a huge deal in my family. I’m going for the Colts because my dad always told me to never bet against a Manning. Plus the Colts have earned it.

And best city for the setting of a book? Hmm, I’d say Boston :)

Okay, I do watch football and it will probably be on our little TV that sits next to the big TV, so I’ll end up keeping an eye on the score.

I do like the Indianapolis Colts though. But I do like New Orleans as a backdrop for stories.

But I like isolated mountainous regions and science fiction settings too!

Okay, I admit it, I don’t care where a story takes place as long as it’s a good one!

I sent you an email, but Moonlight, Lace and Mayhem has passed the Plot Monkeys a Mr. Linky Award!

Jules, I love you. Please consider me for this one…I have been looking for the New Orleans books…pick me, pick me, pick me!!! Yep, I haven’t begged like this in a while…oh, wait, I almost forgot about last week.

I am not really a big football fan, so I won’t be watching the game. I do have a lot of cities that I love the settings of for books. NYC is a big draw for me, so is San Fran. I also love NO because of the aura of mysticism that surrounds it, and all that voodoo stuff people talk. The setting becomes a character in that way, because now it makes anything possible, and it can drive the plot/conflict of a story. Paris is another city because of all the romance in the air. I really hope I get lucky this time. If not, I will just keep searching until I find a copy of your NO stories for a reasonable price.

Thank you for the song floating through my head, btw. I love that song and the musical, the King and I. Deborah Kerr and Yul Brenner were phenomenal. Oh, I lusted after him for a very long time.

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

I am rooting for the Saints, but I won’t be watching the game. I’ve felt bad for them since Katrina, when they had to move to Texas. Also they’ve never won a Super Bowl and I like an underdog. I’m not really a sports fan but I will be watching the Olympics. It just so happens New Orleans is my fav city for a read too. I’ve never been to New Orleans but through books it seems so familiar. I love the Sandra Hill Cajun series!!! Thanks, Sue

Is it Superbowl time already? I don’t follow football at all. The only sports I watch without complaint are those my son plays. But the Saints do have awesome colors on their uniforms.

I don’t have a favorite city, but I do love books set in New Orleans. Or anyplace in the South.

There seem to be so few set in Northern California. Other than Christine Feehan’s Drake series, I can’t really think of any.

Huge football fan. And although hailing from NC, I am rooting for New Orleans. I have friends who are major NO fans, so I will be Who Dating it all evening! Love your books. Love most settings for books, but frankly the city really doesn’t matter. It’s the relationships that matter in a book to me.

I have a cheap and tawdry love affair with Boston… it makes me happy.
I’m not really a football fan, but the Saints beat my new city’s team (Cardinals) at some level of playoff (no, really, I’m not a football fan) and if you’re going to lose, it may as well be to the champion.

So yeah. Boston for books. Saints for Superbowl.

I love stories set in New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston and most that are set in cities on the ocean or very near water with moss hanging from the trees. I love the southern charm and slowing down of the rat race in the south. Good old southern drawl…LOL

I like to read books set in areas I’ve lived in or visited frequently. Mostly those are books set in southeast Texas around the Houston area and the hill country and books set in Southern California as I’m quite familiar with that area too.

I love football – especially college, but pro works for me too. I’m totally rooting for the Saints. I love that they’ve never been to the big game before and I definitely want them to win.
As for books in cities? Well, I have to say I’m partial to cities I’ve been in. I love it when I recognize places in Austin, Boston, Seattle, DC, NYC. But I think DC might be my favorite. Georgetown especially. Columbus is fun too, though I don’t think I’ve read many books set there.
And definitely not the international places I’ve been. Osaka doesn’t really count, and Taipei – well frankly I’d be surprised. I think I’ve only seen Taiwan mentioned in a (fiction) novel … maybe twice. Ever. How fun to have characters mention it though. It’s definitely a metropolitan city. Otherwise, Beacon Hill… Dupont Circle… Farragut – ok, yes, I’m partial to DC. It’s fun in different places too. In Boston the [subway] is the T. In DC, it’s the metro. In NYC, the train. (Or subway if you’re old school, it seems.) And I thought Seattle’s trolly was quaint. Heh – and loved the “oops” campaign they had to pull, that was “Ride the S.L.U.T.” *giggle* :X (South Lake Union Trolley. So now it’s called the Streetcar… but trolley has stuck.)
Oh, and duh – you mentioned it, I love books set in Nawlins too. I definitely didn’t get to spend enough time on Bourbon Street. And everyone knows a good time can be had in Vegas… [Ok. I'll stop.]

First off Julie the Colts represent the great state of Indiana and have been know as the Indinapolis Colts since 1984. As an Indiana girl I am rooting for Peyton Manning and the Colts to win this year’s Super Bowl.

My mom was from Louisiana so I have a great fondness for that state as well and personally have a great love for the city of New Orleans. I love books set in NO and other Louisiana locations. I also like Chicago and San Francisco and NYC settings for books mostly because I have visited those cities enough to love them and have a feel of what those cities are like.

Coms sunday I will be rooting for the Colts all the way though. Go Colts!!!!!! :cheer:

I’m not a football fan so I’m not rooting for anyone. However, other people in the house will be watching it so I’m sure I’ll see pieces of the game. I take the best naps during football games and immediately fall asleep the minute the game comes on. I do like seeing the halftime show but that’s all I’m interested in.

I don’t know if I really have a favorite city for a book setting but I’m not a big fan of books set in New Orleans. Depending on the story line, some of them are okay but usually I don’t enjoy them as much.

I think we’re rooting for the Saints, just because they haven’t won the BIG GAME recently, but we don’t have a strong affiliation with either city. As for city settings, I think it’s fun to read stories set where I know the city a little and it’s like a chance to revisit through the characters. I like the City by the Bay, San Francisco, for that reason :) On the other hand, it’s just as much fun for me to “visit” new-to-me cities, so, I’m not picky!

:waving:  geez, not many on here are behind the Colts but I am! Frankly, I’d be behind Peyton Manning no matter which NFL team he was on. The guy is total CLASS in this day and age when sports stars are embroiled in scandal & controversy. I also am a Tennessee Volunteer fan so another reason to back him. I went to his first ever NFL game vs Seahawks here in Seattle too.

:reading: My all-time preference for setting of books is Historical times in Ireland, England, Scotland & American Revolution America but that doesn’t say if the book is contemporary and is written by one of my favorite writers, no matter where the story takes place, I will still get it to read.

I am so not a football fan but over the years I am exposed to the game and teams.
I am rooting for the Saints!!!!! All the way, Baby!
Why? Ironically, the reason is part of your question. I read Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches. She wrote of diverse and rich New Orleans, specifically the garden district. To this day, I still have the image of the house and the district. It made a lasting impression on me.
Every time I think of New Orleans, or anything to do with the city, I think of Anne Rice’s descriptions.
I would LOVE to visit and see with my own eyes. But I worry that the real thing wouldn’t live up to my image.
Anyway, thanks for giving me the chance to enter in the contest.
