Books, books…and more books!
Julie Icon

Everyone looks forward to Fridays because of the great giveaways we do every week…and, of course, the weekend. But now you have reason to look forward to Wednesdays because for the next few weeks, Julie is going to be CLEANING HER CLOSET.

Which means…free books for you!

If you live in the continental US because shipping books out of the country is VERY expensive. Sorry!

I have a closet in my office that is overflowing with books. There’s a set of old encyclopedias that simply have to go–I’m sure they’re mostly outdated and definitely obsolete thanks to the Internet. No, I’m not giving those away here! Those will go somewhere local (if anyone wants them, which I doubt they will.) They’ll likely be recycled.

I have research books…OH GOD, do I have research books! I started writing with historicals, remember? But no, I’m not giving those away either.

What I’m giving away are MY books…the books I’ve published that I simply have too many author copies of. I have quite a few, actually…my early works not so much (except those that were reprinted) and a few books I only have a few copies of for some reason (ESSENCE OF MIDNIGHT and MORE THAN WORDS are two I’ve had to order copies from eBay in order to have just a few on my shelves.) But on others…well, the wealth runneth over. And since I don’t have another new book out until June, I thought I’d use my Wednesdays to give some books away…I’ll either do one package of 10 backlist titles or 10 winners will receive single or double books.

I’m not sure how to organize it, so for this week, it’s one winner with 10 books (or more)…just post a comment about how you feel about reading an author’s backlist.

I’ve only ever gone back and read one of my old books ONCE. I never read my books once they’re published. I’d rather read other people’s books! I’m a little nervous giving away my older books since I think I’ve improved a lot since then…what do you think? When you like an author’s new work, do you go back and read backlist? How far back? Do you think there’s a big difference between new work and older work?

Let me know for a chance to win a big old box of books!

Julie Leto

JulieBy all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold over forty books to four publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her daughter, a spoiled dachshund, a haughty lynx-point Siamese and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

I’ve really enjoyed your more recent books!! I especially liked Marisela Morales in Dirty Little Lies and Dirty Little Secrets! :cheer:

I’d love to read your earlier works. I occasionally go back to read earlier works of authors that I like. Lisa Kleypas, Julia London, Susan Wiggs, Carly Phillips and Jill Shalvis to name a few.

10 of your books… WHAT A TREAT!! :snoopy:

Good morning Jules! I LOVE book giveaways…you shouldn’t be nervous. When I “discover” a new to me author and fall in love with them, I absolutely go back and find their BL. I don’t care! If I love you, I love you. It doesn’t matter how you wrote before, and if anyone judged you on your past work after falling in love with your present work, they really stink in my opinion. Gosh, if I didn’t try to find the BL of authors that I fell in love with, I would be lost. I wouldn’t have discovered how much I love their voices. I would never have discovered this place if I hadn’t picked up one of your earlier works Jules. I loved WYP!!!! PICK ME :praying: I wouldn’t have met so many wonderful authors since then. I also would not have seen how much some of my fave authors have grown since they started out. It has a ricochet effect for me. I try my best to get my hands on the entire BL if I can. I am still glomming some of you guys because some of the books in your BL are so hard to find. PICK ME :praying: As a matter of fact, found a copy of “Domino Effect” for a nice price last week, and got it in the mail already. Shoot, getting the BL is how I discovered the Divine Sisters and Marisela, the wonderful Santori family, Janelle’s Wilde series, Robyn Carr’s Grace Valley, Sue Brockmann Troubleshooters. PICK ME :praying: I don’t know what I would do with getting an author’s backlist. And, I am still searching for some of your books, and those of the other plotmonkeys as well as some of my other fave authors. I hope I am lucky enough to win this one. If not, I will be soooooo sad! LOL!!! PICK ME :praying: You like my subliminal message. I know it is somewhat futile since you use a number generator, but the begging gods could be listening, right? PICK ME :praying: Have a great rest of the day. Good luck everyone!

      Peace and love,
      Paula R.

I have only been reading romance for a little over a year, so I am constantly discovering wonderful new (to me at least) authors. When I find someone that I’ve never read before I may read whatever book intrigued me about them, but then I almost always go through their backlist. It’s not always easy finding the books, but I really enjoy seeing how the writer’s work has evolved over time.
I hope you have a wonderful day and Good Luck cleaning out the closet!

I enjoy your books, you know that. LOL I am not sure how much of the backlist that I have at this point either.

As for the old encyclopidias- maybe there is a kidergarten class that could benefit from the for their arts & crafts projects? I am not a big believer in cutting up or destroying books (don’t get me started on “designers” who use them that way) but since they are basically useless at this point, maybe the pictures won’t go to waste.

When I find a new to me author, I always look for their backlist. Especially if any of the books are in a series. I really try to read books in series in order. I ended up buying about 10 books at once when I found Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunters. I’m really not sure how many of your backlist books I’m missing, Julie, but would love to give them a new home.

Interesting. When I discover a new author and really love her work I ALWAYS look into her back list. Usually I have to get all her older books and read them. For some it takes time because the back list is huge (I remember when I discovered Julie Garwood or Lisa Kleypas). For some others like Nora Roberts… It’s still a work in progress ;-)

As I find new authors I like, I typically go back and read previous books they’ve written. So, I’m frequently reading “backlist” books from the library or discount book sellers. Many authors do get better over time. Some–not so much. I find I’ve stopped reading a few mystery authors who used to be must-reads for me because their books started to sound the same! (Of course, that would never happen with the Plotmonkeys.) Thanks for the generous clean-up giveaway. :dancebanana:

I’m a backlist reader. It feels like a way to get to know an author I’m interested in. If I learn of a new series and I’m really interested, sometimes I’ll try to go back and read forward before reading the newest release. (Did this with Harry Potter.)

If I really enjoy a book with a new-to-me author, I’ll seek out the backlist. I’ll decide I really love this author or maybe I just loved the new book. On occasion but rarely, I’ll come away feeling glad I “met” the author via her latest work, finding the backlist wanting. Thankfully this is very rare.

I love reading books from a backlist. Personally, when I find a new-to-me author that I like, I become obsessive about reading everthing I can that they have written! Then I get frustrated because I can’t find everything I want! I too am in the process of relieving my home of excessive ‘stuff’…..simply because we can’t move in here anymore!! :blushing: Happy cleaning!

If I enjoy an author I usually search out more titles by them whether or not they are newer or older. As far as writing quality, I fall in love with the author’s voice and that tends to be consistent from first to last! Quality is easy for me to overcome when I enjoy the stories.

I do read backlist when I discover a new-to-me author. I often find that, yes, there’s growth as a writer (depending on how old the backlist is), but I’ve also found that sometimes I prefer their older works to the new books (Hello, Linda Howard).

I’ve also seen authors’ backlist that made me wonder if they went through a dry spell creatively, or if something else was going on in their lives at the time they wrote some of their books. When the older backlist is great, the mid-list is very meh, and the frontlist is great again.

    Interesting topic to think about!

Yes, I do read a new author’s back list. I will go back as far as book #1 and read them all. I don’t think there is a published author out there who hasn’t grown and changed and improved with each book they have published. If you read Nora’s first book, Irish Rebel and read her latest Bride Trilogy the difference is astounding. And I’m not saying that in a bad way at all. Nora is amazing.

Curiosity got the best of me! On Nora’s website is a complete list of her books in chronological order. The first book in 1981 was Irish Throughbread, Irish Rebel wasn’t out until 2000. The woman has an amazing body of work out. The list does not mention the book I said she will not allow to be reissued. It was apparently not very good! At least to her.

Love the Internet for all this information!

Count me out of the drawing. I’m not in the US.

I do like to go back and find the backlist of authors that I’ve found I really like reading. Part of the problem is I have a habit of picking up a ‘new-to-me’ author’s book when its part of a series and one of the later at that. With the transition to ebooks I am beginning to find it easier to find the titles for some authors, especially if they primarily write for Desire or Blaze – BUT there are still some authors that I would rather have a print book even if I can get an ebook.

Reading the backlist of an author whose work I enjoy really depends on the author and how extensive the backlist is. When I discovered James Rollins a few years ago, I couldn’t get enough of his work so I acquired all of the books on his backlist. Of course, it was fairly easy because he only had about 9 books out at the time. For some of my other favorite authors, I’ve gone into their backlist, but not the whole thing because they have a ton of books and I don’t have enough time to read all of them while I’m continuing to discover new authors. I have noticed some differences between older works and the new stuff, but I generally enjoy seeing the evolution of the writing.

If the story is good it doesn’t matter how old the book is. I do find older backlist books and they are still good to read unless it was really bad to begin with. Sometimes there are things in a book that dates it but the story stands the test of time. :applause: Great idea, giving away books. Any of the Plotmonkey books! :applause:

I’m always checking backlists for authors. If I like one of their books, I like to try the others. ( I have been known to search through box upon box at booksales for backlist works of my favorite authors.—-Always fun when my allergies are acting up.) Julie, great idea for a giveaway.

May I add – if I find a new author I like, then I go look for their backlist books. And yes times change, look at Sandra Brown and Linda Howard books – years ago they were strictly romance; now rom suspense mostly. I get a kick out of older books where there were no computers, cell phones. etc.

If I really like an author’s book and all the books in the backlist sound awesome and got good reviews, I’ll read them all! I try to stick with new books and I think some authors improve as the years go on.However, some just keep writing books, usually in a series, that never get better at all.

When you like an author’s new work, do you go back and read backlist? How far back? Do you think there’s a big difference between new work and older work?
When I find a new author I always go back and read from their back list. Most of the time the writing is on the same level and just as great. Sometimes they may go into another direction or genre but their books have always been great regardless to age. Before we had a good used book store locally, I would go on line to ebay and buy the back listed books. Now that I am retired and have more time to read I go the our new local book store and get some new books and some back listed. I try to get the series in order but if I can’t, I read it anyway or wait until I can get the one before.
Thanks for this great giveaway. A box of books will keep me busy reading for a while. I have been avid reader for over 50 yrs and reading is the best way to relax.

lmao…..was cringing thinking you meant those encyclopedia’s…I donated mine to the local salvation army years ago…along with my wedding dress from exhubby…then thought I should have burned it rather than jinx some poor woman…but that’s a whole nother story…as for reading backlists…or rereading backlists….that’s when you know you either A.) really like an author if you are a reader or B.) you know that you are really good if you are an author and people reread your books…I have all of my favorites (all romance of course) 10 bookcases…and every once in a while I pick an author..and reread every single backlist book I have by that author….then will pick someone else…) I’ll be honest…It only take me 2 hours to read a paperback so I can sit and read 5+ books a day when I’m in the reading mood…and if the author wrote a series…well then…I love just sitting there reading them from beginning to end… For me it those first few usually remind me why I fell in love with that author to begin with….Hell…I have Janelle’s early ones like Heaven’s Gift and The Family Man (not even written under her name) and Carly’s original Karen Drogin Books Then of course I went and bought the reissues because hey….have to have all the differnt copies available…and of course Julie and Leslie books…and I have every book ever written by VLT and Rebecca Winters and Tori Carrington to name a few…it’s somewhat an addiction but mostly it’s like coming home to family…the good ones make you feel like you’ve come home again.

so yes..to answer that question….i do go back and read backlists..and honestly…I think authors need readers to do that because if they don’t have anything new out at that time….it keeps them on readers minds…and if a publisher sees that people are still seeking out backlists of a certain author I’d like to think that would motivate them to resign that author to more books which becomes a win win win for everyone…the author who gets to write more, the reader who gets to read more and the publisher who gets to have their pockets lined too.

While vacationing in Mexico last year I found a book by the pool “Sealed with a Kiss” by Carly PHillips and instantly loved it. When we got back home I found all her backlist of books and have been buying them up. Actually drove an hour one day to fing one at a small bookstore. I live in a very small town so I have been using the internet to find most of them. It has been fun to track down older books. Since my kids went off to college this has been my hobby!

AS FOR YOUR QUESTION – I LOVE DISCOVERING NEW AUTHORS AND IF I FIND ONE I LIKE I HAVE TO GET HER OLDER ONES. SOMETIMES AUTHORS CHANGE WRITING STYLES, GENRES. ETC. SO THAT WOULD HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON WHETHER OR NOT I WOULD SEEK OUT OLDER BOOKS. SOME AUTHORS DO WHAT I CALL STRAIGHT CONTEMP WHICH I LIKE THEN CROSS OVER TO PARANORMALS, VAMP, ETC.

I love reading author’s backlists! It’s fun when I find an author I really like and checking out the books I’ve missed! It’s especially fun when sometimes they date back to the 90′s and 80′s because you get to read about those times and what was going on then.

Hmm…hope this is still a valid entry. I’m answering the question anyway!

I love going back and reading or re-reading an author’s backlist. I’m actually doing that right now with Lori Foster’s books. Sometimes I’ll pick up a book by an author I don’t recognize or that I’ve heard of, but never read before. If I like the book a lot, then I will definitely hit up the store or the library (depends on budget and level of interest) for more of that author’s books.

My sister got me hooked on Jayne Ann Krentz’s newest series, so I found her backlist at a library booksale. Dug up from 1979 to 2004. Read them in order. I think it’s fun to see how an author has evolved. By the mid 80s in JAK backlist you could see the beginnings of her Arcane Society and paranormal plots.
