Family Game Night
Janelle Icon

uno_cardToday is a quick post for me.  My in-laws are visiting from California for the week, and it’s been super busy every single day — and night!  One of the things we’ve always loved to do as a family when we lived in California is play cards, and we haven’t done much of that since moving up to Oregon.  But Don’s mom and dad brought Uno and Rage (card games), and all six of us have been playing every single night.  It’s been a lot of fun — lots of joking and laughs and teasing.  We’ve really missed our family game nights! rage

What favorite games does your family like to play?

Janelle

JanelleJanelle Denison finds it hard to believe that it’s been nearly 20 years since she first started writing romance novels. At first, it was a way to pass idle time while her husband worked swing shift, but before long it became an obsession to get published. Luckily, she kept at it (it took her over 5 years to get that first book published!) and is now a Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, and USA Today Bestselling author! Now, after selling over 40 plus novels, she finds that her Plotmonkey pals help to keep her stories fresh and unique, and she can’t imagine writing a story without their input. Janelle lives in Oregon with her husband, Don, along with two teenage daughters that keep life interesting.

Huh. Our family wasn’t much into games, but I have friends that love to play Uno and other card games – it’s always fun to get together around the table and play, as long as they’re not too complicated LOL.

When we play cards it’s either Poker or Hearts. We haven’t played in a while though. I love to play Mahjong and Free Cell on my computer.

    Have a great day,

    Cher

We play Shanghai Rummy when all of my family is together(mom’s side only). My cousin(by marriage) taught us all how to play years ago, but from looking at the rules online, her family has changed the game up a bit. We only play 7 rounds instead of 10 and score the game differently as well. When we are together with my dad’s side of the family, we sit around talking about books and drinking wine.

we don’t really play games (we’re either too competative or the kids don’t have the attention span), but hopefully, we’ll do it later :)

We aren’t much into games as a family. The few times we’ve tried my husband’s too competitive and it isn’t fun! :groan: But I am addicted to Scramble on my iPhone. Sometimes I’ll play against my daughters.

We’ve been known to play a cutthroat game or two of UNO in our time :)

Also on the docket is Risk or Monopoly. Just depends who’s choosing.

I love that Risk gave my kids the desire not only for world domination, but also a knowledge of world geography. It’s how I learned my geography back in the day, too. I must have been the only 3rd grader who knew where Kamchatka was. My kids could say the same thing. In fact, I’d venture a guess that they’re the only high schoolers who know where Kamchatka is. LOL.

My family played board games- Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue and even Candy Land! :dancebanana: My folks when I was younger played Pinocle…I could never figure that one out. :wallbanger: My husband’s family play cards every time they get a chance, Pitch is their game. I just don’t have the patience for card game. I addicted Sudoku, both paper and on my Blackberry. :D I do love the commercials where the mom’s are on the game aisle at the store trying to pick out game for the family’s game night. It’s kind of like the Hallmark commercials that pull at the heartstrings! I’m such a :loser: !!!

I love family game night!!!!! My family and I had game night up until I graduated high school, and even still when I go home to visit. Collectively, our favorite card game is SkipBo but we also played UNO and Rummy among others. Once it awhile we’ll mix it up with a board game. To me, it’s just a nice way to relax with my parents and watch tv in the evenings. My mom also suggests a game when I’m feeling really down about something to get my mind off of it.

    Aww…now I’m homesick…. :(

Hope everyone has a great Thursday!

    <3 J

Uno is a classic and everyone loves that. I also found that the card game SLEEPING QUEENS is a hit for the younger kids.

When my girls were growing up we played quite a few games, Candyland when they we very small and as they grew older Yahtzee, Monopoly, Clue but not much as far as card games. Now when I go to Oregon I play games with the grandkids, Battleship, Yahtzee and once in awhile Scrabble. I love Scrabble but don’t know anyone now that plays. It is a fun time with family or friends, turn off the TV and listen to each other while enjoying company. :applause: I don’t like it when people get to competitive. Takes the fun out it!! :(

:flag: Enjoy the rest of the time with family.

We played Yahtzee last night and the kidlet stomped hubby and I. 2 Yahtzee’s in 3 turns!! I would’ve accused him of cheating if I hadn’t seen him roll them!

We play a lot of Uno, Phase 10, Yahtzee, Rummikub (my personal favorite but the last on everyone else’s list). I haven’t heard of Rage but I’ll have to check it out.

    Enjoy the company!!!

We like Bananagrams, like Scrabble, but you play on your own, but against an opponent. Fun to play with my son and his girlfriend.

Hey Janelle, I am glad that you have the chance to pick up your family game nights again. What exactly is Rage? I have never heard of that card game. What are the rules? Is it similar to UNO?

Growing up, we never had family game nights, but if I am ever fortunate enough to have one of my own, we would definitely play…probably scrabble, chess, boggle, uno, scattergories and maybe even pictionary. I would save Taboo for fun and friends night. Trivial Pursuit would be a great one too.

Go ahead and continue to spend time with family and friends okay.

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

I prefer games like Cranium, Likewise!, imaginiff…, apples to apples, Blokus and other light strategy and party games where it doesn’t matter who wins, just fun to play. Keeps the competitive types at bay :)
