…of great stories, that is!
But first–I’m just back from St. Louis and I apologize for not blogging last week. I thought I had all the laundry, packing, etc, under control, but not only did I forget to blog on Wednesday, I also neglected to remind my daughter to make sure her father took her to Art Class on Thursday. Hmmm…think maybe I was a little anxious to get out of town? St. Louis was fabulous. What a spectacular city!
And let me tell you, I don’t think there could be friendlier people anywhere in the world than Missouri. Not just in the hotel–everywhere you went. I mean, it was startling to me, who lives in the fairly friendly state of Florida. The New Yorkers must have been freaking out. No matter where you went, people said, “Hello. How are you?” Even if you were just walking down the street. I noticed it everywhere.
We went on a ghost tour in St. Charles too that was very cool. My roomie, Diana Peterfreund, got some amazing pictures of orbs. I hope she posts them on her blog soon. We had one run in with a ghost…though our ghost tour guide, a paranormal researcher, is also a magician, so I suppose he might have been playing a trick on us. But if he did, it was a good one.
…but now back to the original topic of this post.
I went to St. Louis to attend the annual conference of Novelists, Inc, which is an organization for multi-published authors. I made a lot of new friends, went to workshops (something I never do anymore at RWA), ate good food, partook of the hotel’s amazing 3 FREE DRINKS at Happy Hour and stayed up way too late every night. But when I did attend workshops one theme came through over and over.
You’ve gotta have your peeps.
Tami Hoag called them her “posse.” Catherine Coulter and Kay Hooper consider them their “divas.” I call them my “plotmonkeys”
in addition to the extended circle of friends I keep close by, who support me in my life and my career–fellow writers who “get” what we go through on a daily, if not hour-by-hour (thanks, Twitter) basis.
These are the friends who I am genuinely THRILLED for when they hit the big time, when their hard work and tireless persistence pay off and they reach levels of success that some of us are still working toward. Two such friends have a book out this week and I’m not only hear to talk about it today, but to give away a free copy, thanks to the generous authors–KRESLEY COLE and GENA SHOWALTER!
Their new book, a hardcover entitled THE DEEP KISS OF WINTER, comes out next Tuesday. (Is that cover hot or what?) I’ve known Gena and Kresley for quite a while and they are incredibly generous, fun women. If you want to laugh until you bust a gut, these are the girls to hang out with. I know. I think my gut is still recovering from the last time. I have watched both of these authors rise up the bestseller lists and I could not be happier for them. Gena’s book, OH MY GOTH, is one of my all-time favorite YA novels of all time and if you haven’t read Kresley’s KISS OF THE DEMON KING, what are you waiting for? The book is one long, amazing love scene. I swear to you! Awesome plot, fabulous characters and sexual tension that simply does. not. quit.
When I learned that Gena and Kresley had a book coming out together, I have to admit that I got all warm inside. It’s one thing to be in a collection with fellow writers you respect, but to be in a collection with genuine friends is a rare and valuable treat. Kresley and Gena are best buds, so I know the joy they must be feeling as the book hits stores and they embark on a book tour together. (Check out dates to see if they are coming near you…they’re coming near me. Yeah!)
Leslie and I have a book out next month together, as you jungle regulars well know. Working with Leslie was an absolute treat…I’d love to do it again! Leslie and I just mailed out all the books we gave away here in the last few weeks and I can’t WAIT to hear what people think of the book! (Insert me biting nails here!)
But to celebrate the release of Gena and Kresley’s book, they’ve given me a copy to gift to a poster here at Plotmonkeys. Winner will be announced Friday! Just post if you’ve read Gena and/or Kresley before, what’s your favorite book or why you’d like to try them and you’re entered to win!
And speaking of winners…I’ll also announce the winners of the Hank Phillipi Ryan contest on Friday, too. Yes, I’m behind!
Oh, and because this is utterly priceless:

By all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold nearly thirty books to three publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her husband, daughter, spoiled dachshund, enormous guinea pig and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

Awsome give-a-way!!!!!!
I am currently reading Gena Showalter’s latest Lords of the Underworld book, Darkest Whisper and it is like a big reunion for me as I haven’t read a Lord book in awhile. I absolutely, positively, 100% LOVE kresley cole, she is the reason I read paranormals today and will continue to be one of my favorite authors. I have been checking out her website and chat room constantly to get updates on the new book and see if I can get a preview for her next one coming out in Feb Pleasure of a Dark Prince. If you have never read either of these authors than you are in for a big treat! I am currently on count down for her latest book and am so upset with amazon that they are not offering this book in Kindle
My favorite Lords book is The Darkest Night and my favorite IAD book is A hunger like no other, but I have yet to read a book by either author that I did not devour in one day and smile all the way through it

Gena and Kresley are like my total woman crushes. I was like Sarah P…..once I read one of the books I had to go out a buy the whole series. Really more like I’m trying to get my greedy little hands on all they have ever written.
I have all of Kresley Cole’s and my favorite IAD is No Rest for the Wicked simply because of the VIRGIN VAMPIRE……..nuf said. Do what you could teach him?!!!!
I have most of Gena Showalter’s books and my fav LOTU book so far is The Kiss….There’s just somethang bout a scarred man!! And his name……Lucien….sigh, sigh.
I just love the idea of these two authors getting together and maybe writing a book to intergrate all these characters together. I get all tingle and warm inside just thinking about it, ya know.

Gena. Cracks. Me. Up. So does Jill Monroe, her partner in Author Talk crime. These two marvelous ladies are members of the OKRWA. Am I embarrassed to say I haven’t read Gena’s books?
I have some of her back list in my ginormous TBR pile but none of the new stuff. I need about six months to do nothing but readreadreadread all the books I want to read to get caught up. And then start on the NEW TBR pile that’s accumulating in my Wish List, starting with this one! (I haven’t read Kresley, either. Yeah. Yeah. SHE’S on the Wish List, too.)

I love both authors! I have so many of their books and I think tehir writing is fantabulous! My favorite (this is very difficult) would have to be Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night by Kresley Cole.

Hi that video was very funny. I loved when Gena delivered the book!
I have read some of Gena’s books. I don’t think I have ever read Kresley’s.
I know shame on me. Geech I can’t read them all, hmmmm or can I?
I just finished Cindy Gerard’s new Feel the Heat and Rocki St. Claire’s Make her
Pay. Both of these books are excellent reads. The point is, I now read both
these authors because of the Plotmonkeys.
Did I mention I am so addicted that I had to buy every book of theirs I could.
Okay, so if I win, I will have to buy and read all Gena’s and Kresley’s back lists.
My favorite Showalter book is: Darkest Night so far!
It surewouldbe nice to win. Good Luck everyone!

I read Gena and Kresley’s books. They are MUST Read authors! Both have such vivid imaginations and just draw you into the pages. I’ve come to love characters from several of their series. I think Gena’s Alien series is my favorite as there is so much inter-species relations but basically, it all comes down to the heart & soul. And I love Kresley’s After Dark series – those boys are mmmmm and I just get so sappy for them when they finally meet their mate.

These both would be new authors for me, love the cover!

My TBR includes Ms. Showalter’s Alien Huntress and Atlantis books and Ms. Cole’s MacCarrick Brothers series.
I’m really looking forward to reading Deep Kiss of Winter!

I have read more Kresley Cole books than Showalter but my favorite is Cole’s Dark Needs At Night’s Edge
The whole IAD series has been a hit with me but this one was my perfect 5 star book for me
Comment
I am a huge fan of both Gena and Kresley!! Fav books by Gena, it’s a toss up between The Darkest Pleasure and Jewel of Atlantis. Fav book by Kresley, definitely Dark Needs At Night’s Edge. However, Dark Desires After Dusk and A Hunger Like No Other are a close second and third.
The reason I love both women so much as authors is because they have pushed passed all taboo boundaries. Some of my own personal wickedest and darkest desires were brought to life through their books!
I could go on and on about them, but I’ll contain myself lol I’m so glad that they’re releasing a coupling book :)

Welcome back, Julie! It sounds like you had a great time!

I have yet to read anything by Kresley Cole…yet! But I absolutely love “Catch a Mate” by Gena Showalter. I can’t even recall how many times I’ve reread that book.

Asking me to pick a favorite Gena book is like asking the irresistible force to move the immovable object.
But if I have to, it would be the Nymph King. It was the first I read and there is something special about your first.
And Gena looks amazing in her red evening gown she wore to the RITAs.

Hi….I love Gena’s books, I thought Seduce the Darkness would be my all-time favorite but just about a week ago, I started the LOTU series and ohhhhhh, LOVE! Right now, I’m finishing up on Lucien and Anya’s story and waiting patiently for Reyes/Danikas’ book to arrive by mail. I’m hooked!

I absolutely LOVE these ladies! Each one of their books go on my “keep forever” shelf- it doesn’t matter what genre it is, I will pick it up. Hey Jules, welcome back. I am so glad you had so much fun in Missouri. I actually have a student on dorm who is from there, and he is very polite. He prides himself on being from there.
I love Gena’s stuff. I really haven’t read Kresley Cole yet, but I know that they are best buds. I hang out on Gena’s blog a lot too, although I haven’t been there much lately. Really need to remedy that. I would love to be in the running for this book. My fav book of Gena’s is “Catch A Mate” and I love her Lord of the Underworld series. I have been pimping her YA books too. She is amazing! I love her voice, and it was because of her visit here to the jungle many moons ago that I was able to find her. Thanks for that monkeys. She is definitely an auto-buy for me.
I have seen this particular AT video and I loved it then. Thanks for sharing it here and giving us some more laughs. Gena and Jill together are so funny.
I hope that everyone is having a wonderful day.

Am I excited about this book? Does a Lord of the Underworld ooze sex until I’m fanning myself with the book? Are demon kings sexy as all get out? A resounding YES! I have read all of Kresley Cole’s books and most of Gena Showalter’s books, and I. can’t. wait. until my book arrives in the mail. But, if you see fit to pass a signed copy in my direction, you won’t hear a single complaint from me.

OMG – Gena, you so have a career in interpretive dance if you ever decide to branch out from writing! (My favorite part was the birth of the first book – hysterical!)
And now I’ve got to clean vanilla latte off the keyboard…
Gena – My fave book Seduce The Darkness. Love the Alien Huntress series! Also couldn’t put down the The Vampire’s Bride.
Kresley – Cannot tell you how much I crave every Immortals After Dark novel! No Rest for the Wicked is a terrific read – and Sebastian Wroth is a hero to die for! Also couldn’t put down Dark Desires After Dusk – Cadeon Woede is so hot I had to turn up the A/C.
I absolutely cannot wait for February, 2010:

Love both these authors. Have been reading Gena’s books for awhile – definitely favor the Lords series, but very much enjoyed Atlantis series and Alien Hunteress. Darkest Pleasure has been my favorite. Just started Kresley’s Immortal After Dark series so the first book Hunger Like No Other is my favorite so far… but I haven’t started book 2 yet!

if the stories are half as creative as the ‘Authortalk’ videos that Gena and Jill create, they must be excellent indeed! How I love the authortalk. Those women are hysterical. I was actually amazed to learn that they don’t write in the same genre – they seem so attuned to each other.

I have read books by both of these wonderful, talented women! My favorite by Kresley Cole is A Hunger Like No Other. And My favorite by Gena Showalter is The Darkest Night. I would love to win a copy of Deep Kiss of Winter! Two AWESOME authors in one book! WOW!
