Hi, all. I’m blogging for Janelle today because she’s been visiting California friends and family and isn’t home yet. She’ll take my Thursday!
So. Some of you might remember I bought the first version of the Kindle and promptly sold it on Ebay. I thought it was because I couldn’t get used to not holding a book in my hand. There was also the fact that I hated the odd shape and every time I’d read, I’d accidentally hit a button and move a page. But a funny thing happened while I was laid up. I started thinking of the new Kindle. First, Julie loves hers. Second, my new agent loves hers! Third, when I’m bored and stuck in the house, I tend to think of things to buy. OK so this is NOT a good trait. But I know myself. Added to the fact that last trip cost me a lot of money in weight overage fees. Traveling with books is not a good thing. Unless you own a Kindle …
See where I’m going with this?
So one late night when I couldn’t sleep, I managed to convince myself I needed a Kindle. Kindle came. Whispernet (wireless) didn’t work in my house, so I plugged it into my laptop and downloaded my first Kindle book. STORM WATCH by Jill Shalvis. I read (and loved) the story in a few short hours. Other than the Plotmonkeys, it was the first Blaze I’d read in awhile (Brenda, if you’re reading this don’t KILL me!) … and I promptly downloaded a few more. Since then, I’ve read Jill’s entire Firefighter series (3 Blazes and an anthology I think) AND Leslie’s Heated Rush and Slow Hands (in wrong order).
So can I just say I LOVE THIS KINDLE? It’s much better made than the first. My hand doesn’t hit keys or move pages. No cut off corners or funky shape to annoy me. And did I mention it’s cheaper than my last Kindle? So my house isn’t the best place to use its wireless. What else is new? Cell phone service isn’t good here either. But I’m reading on it. And I Haven’t found time or inclination to read lately. Until the Kindle! This is a good thing, yes?
So of course it cost me money to rediscover my love of reading. And my love of Blazes. But I’m happy. AND I LOVE MY NEW KINDLE!

Carly Phillips would like to take 100% credit for all her stories but the truth is, Carly’s strength is writing family, emotion, funky elderly people and animals. She couldn’t plot her way out of a paper bag, which is why she smartly found her plotmonkey pals early on in her writing career. Thanks to their support, Carly is now a NYT Bestselling author of 23 plus novels. Because writing doesn’t keep her busy enough, Carly is also a wife, a mother of one preteen and one teenage daughter, the primary care giver of her soft coated Wheaten terrier and an expert carpool mom.

I’m still thinking about the Kindle – I really do want one especially when I travel. I have a question:
Do you have to scroll to read one page?
Comment
No, you do NOT have to scroll to read one page! It’s a normal read.
Comment
I know it’s practical, and it would make a lot of sense to get one, but so far I haven’t been able to bring myself to buy it. Glad you’re enjoying yours so much. My friend Beth loves hers, and it’s so incredibly easy to get books! Someday I will succumb…
Comment
Do NOT buy until you are mentally ready. I wasn’t the first time and I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. I can now!

Me too Stacy … I usually wait a few years for new technology – let them work all the bugs out and address customer concerns etc. I really love holding books but I will be getting one someday. It just makes sense …
Happy reading Carly !

I have the Sony reader, and love it. My oldest niece loves it too, as she reads on it the entire time she is at my house. It is much easier to carry lots of books, but I still love the feel of a “real” book in my hands. I got my Sony reader before the new Kindle came out, or I probably would have gone with the Kindle.

Hey Carly, good to see that you are reading again. I don’t know about the Kindle. Everyone seems to have one now, or some other type of ereader…I just wonder what will happen to actual books and libraries in the future if everyone starts getting one of these reading devices. I am glad that you are feeling well enough to read. How long will you be recupping? It is good to see you today…I will swing by later…
Peace and love,

Paula,
I have no answer for you. I also know this is part of why I disliked the first Kindle. Fear of exactly what you said … Sigh.

I don’t have one yet but have been thinking about purchasing one. My problem is I really enjoy the real books. Have a huge collection. And I love the Blaze line.

Hi Carly,
Glad to see you are feeling better. Spending money and reading are always good signs.
We owned a repair shop/service station when self serve gas came out. I know how quickly it shut us down on the gas end. I want a kindle but I guess I’ll resist for a while. hugs. I do like my paperbacks.

I always find ways to spend money when I am stuck at home, too. Glad you are enjoying books again….I loved Jill Shalvis’ series and Leslie’s series, also :)

Carly, glad you’re feeling better and enjoying your new Kindle. My husband and I are thinking about getting one because we read so much and we basically have book shelves in almost every room to hold our books.
I just finished Storm Watch and it was fabulous. I also read Unbridled by Tori Carrington, Hard to Resist by Samantha Hunter, A Few Good Men by Tori Carrington, Naked Ambition by Jule McBride. I found a copy of The Sweetest Taboo by Alison Kent and also Wild and Wicked by Joanne Rock. I ordered all the August and September Blazes to read as well.
I found a pubbed author on line–Eliza Knight–who has a critique service and she also reads a lot of Blaze and is familiar with the line. She is also a visiting professor at Romance University so I figure I’m in good hands. I’ve hired her to read my Blaze before I submit it to Brenda. I just want to make sure I’m focusing my scenes where they need to be to help increase my chances of a yes this time from Brenda.
Have a wonderful day all,
Cher

Good luck with that Cher.
If I had a house, I would have bookshelves in ALL the rooms too…maybe one day, I will be that lucky. Should probably start saving for a castle or a Victorian home…lol

Hey there, how are you feeling? And thank you so much for the kind words on my Blazes! You know you’ve always been an auto-read for me.
As far as the Kindle goes, it’s on my wish list. I hope Santa is listening …

Jill, loved the stories!!!!!
Awhile ago you wrote a book, a trade, a woman who wanted lots of sex from her neighbor – I still love that one!

You all know I’m still having a year-long love affair with my Kindle, only enhanced by the fact that there is a Kindle app for my iPhone.
BUT, I want to assure you, I still read paper books, too.
First, some books aren’t available for the Kindle. Second, there are some books I just want to own, have on my shelf. Third, I go to booksignings and well, you can’t sign an ebook. So while I’m buying infinitely fewer paper books, I still buy them. (I’m reading THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Rick Riordan right now in paper.) But the amazing thing…I’m reading more. Just like Carly, the ease and comfort of the kindle makes reading easier. And with my iPhone, I don’t even have to decide which book to take with me when I leave the house because it automatically syncs with whatever I’m reading on the Kindle. Great fun!

Carly, in regard to your cell reception, my husband installs Microwave antennas and DAS–Distributed Antenna Systems–indoor cellular. We have it in our house. I told him about your problem and he’s going to write something up to help steer you in the right direction. As soon as he gives it to me I’ll post it for you.

I love my ereader, and I have a few books on the Kindle app for the iPhone (several Blazes and other Harlequins
), but haven’t been able to reconcile the fact that I don’t actually own the books that I’ve paid for on the Kindle. So I have a different ebook reader, but I’m so happy that you are loving yours!

Carly, I hope your recovery from surgery is going well. Glad to hear you are enjoying the Kindle. Lots of people are switching to that type of reader. At this time I can’t afford it even if I did want one so am not wanting one—yet!
Maybe in the future, but I really love books with pages! I am afraid that as ereaders and other devices become more popular that books will disappear, horror!
Where will that leave all the people that don’t have readers? I haven’t read Storm Watch yet but glad you enjoyed it. Jill is right up there as one of my favorite authors like the Plotmonkeys. Leslie’s books were great, glad you read them!
Take care as you keep recovering. I need to get in gear as I am having lunch with the two visiting grandkids today!

I stayed away from the first version because I checked out a friends and was always turning the page on accident, too, Carly. But I can see I may have to rethink my aversion to the Kindle. I’m guessing my old, tired eyes will like the illumination at night as well.

The Kindle doesn’t light up…the Sony does, though. When I want light up, I switch to my iPhone. Most of the time, I like that the Kindle looks just like paper. But mostly, I love my Kindle for Whispernet. It’s a bummer Carly can’t use hers at home, but she does have awful cell service in her house.

No light but I bought a clip on night light so I cAn read when hubby is asleep. It’s cheap and awesome!
Comment
Even with the light on the Sony, I didn’t feel like it was bright enough. I have a clip-on reading light that I use at night.

Glad you are feeling better Carly!!
I love my Sony. I wouldn’t go anywhere without it, and since I ALWAYS have a book in my purse, this is much easier and lighter. When I fly off to LA again I won’t have to worry about what to take out of my backpack to make room for all my books!!
I just bought a neoprene case for it.
All my electronics will be coordinated in my back pack now.

I love my Kindle, too, especially when I travel. I used to pack way too many books, for fear of running out of something to read. Now I just take my Kindle, and if I’m going to be gone less than a week, I don’t even need the charger!
I still buy paper copies, but only of my most favorite authors. I also love the ability to download first chapter for free to see if I want to purchase the book.

Having recently had surgery myself, I completely understand the being home bound and therefore buying things! My DH threatened to take away my Debit/Credit card for the fear that I would drain our account
I didn’t but I wanted to! LOL! Glad to see the recovery is going well!
My issue with getting the Kindle is that I have over 650 books on my keeper shelves. These are all the books that I just love rereading. And I guess I feel that I would then want them all on the Kindle as well and I am not a patient sort…therefore getting the Kindle would not be cheap for me.
I am sure this will just be like the iPod and I will be one of the last to get it!
Comment
Aly, I wouldn’t say Loser, I would say economical. I am the say way too. I remember when I bought my iPod, I wanted all my favorite CDs on it, which makes absolutely on sense, in retrospect. It would cost much more and take more time to put all he cds I have on there…I don’t buy stuff I don’t like.
Peace and love,
Paula R.

can you download books from other sites and read them with the kindle ?

Only if they have it in the Kindle format, I think.

I love my Kindle. I wasn’t sure I would like it because I do love books. But it was awesome to be gone 2 weeks and have 29 books with me. I love that it downloads the latest books I have pre-ordered right at 12:01.
I am still getting paperback books but I may be convinced that this is the way to go.
My husband loves that I am not cluttering up every surface with my piles of books.
