Please excuse me while I have a serious fangirl moment. Robyn Carr is guest blogging at Plotmonkeys today! I’m so excited because she has written what is my new favorite series! I’ve read all seven of her Virgin River books–back to back–and loved them all. Few authors can hold up to a glom like this, IMO!
Four weeks ago, I had the rare opportunity to meet Sue Grimshaw, the head romance buyer at Borders Books. We were talking about “what was hot” in romance and she mentioned Robyn’s name more than once. Curious, I turned on my Kindle and found that the first four in Robyn’s VIRGIN RIVER series were available as one document for a low price. Well, never one to pass up a bargain, I downloaded the free sample to my Kindle. I read what was there…and a few minutes later, I downloaded the books.
I read 1-4 and immediately emailed Robyn to tell her how much I loved them. She was so gracious in accepting not only an invitation to chat with us today, but she’ll be back on Saturday to talk about writing! In the meantime, I finished three more of her books and I can’t believe I have to wait months and months to return to Virgin River. Why do I love these books so much? Characterization. Romance! Real romance. Real tug-at-your-heart romance. And comfort. These are comfortable books you can lose yourself in like a big warm blanket. And did I mention the woman writes some super-hot sex? Not graphic sex, mind you…but hot. Emotional, sexy, romantic. This is just the whole package.
So it is with great excitement that I welcome Robyn Carr to the jungle!!!
—————–
About a dozen years ago I was visiting northern Mendocino County. While standing out on a roadside with one of the locals, a helicopter, painted in camouflage, flew over. I said, “I didn’t know the Army was out this way.” He said, “That’s not the Army, that’s the DEA – this is the biggest marijuana growing area in the US.” And my writer’s brain went DING DING DING. I can work with that.
A couple of years later I published a book titled Deep In The Valley. It was a homespun, quirky, romantic look at a small town nestled in the Northern California mountains. Grace Valley, population just over fifteen hundred. At the town’s core was its doctor, June Hudson – a modern woman, if not a cosmopolitan one. As she watches over her friends, family, neighbors and patients, she makes time to fall in love. But alas, her lover is a secret man whose identity she can’t share. And her days are hammered with one complication after another, from a zany octogenarian aunt who writes grizzly murder mysteries to hiring a new physician partner for her practice, not to mention medical challenges that are decidedly different in a small mountain town than they are in a big city where paramedic assistance is readily available.
From the beginning I saw this as a series, anchored by June. In the first book she meets her man, in the second, Just Over The Mountain, she falls totally in love with him and in Down By the River she claims him. Given these books were published a year or more apart, they didn’t exactly make publishing history. Yet.
But there was mail. Touching mail. It came in slowly, over time, as these books were being discovered. I wasn’t exactly sure why my readers loved them so; I never thought they contained what we like to call ‘a high concept plot.’ You know – The Asteroid Crashes Into The Earth kind of high concept.
But people wanted to move there! It almost broke my heart to tell them it was completely fictional. And they told me what they liked about June, about the way the people in town stepped up to help each other, about the real life problems they had to deal with in a idealized little space in the beautiful landscape. And they wanted me to go back to Grace Valley and do it some more.
Well, I had reasons why I didn’t want to keep that series going, the most significant of which was the story arc of June and Jim that was completely satisfied by the third book. But, I was paying attention! My readers liked the romance, liked the day to day adventure, loved the characters and what they were up against. They liked tough, feminine, intelligent women; they were hooked on those manly mountain men who were powerful enough to wrestle a bear to the ground and tender enough to cuddle a newborn baby. They enjoyed plots surrounding medical challenges and interwoven with women’s issues.
Well. I could do that. And do that and do that and do that. The town of Virgin River was born, and not coincidentally, happened to be about a half-hour’s drive from Grace Valley. In Virgin River the central heroine is a nurse practitioner/midwife. Her love interest is a marine who retired to the town to open a small bar and grill for something to do when he wasn’t hunting and fishing. Melinda is the guardian of the health of the town (working alongside their aging doctor) and Jack Sheridan owns and operates the town watering hole, the gathering place. The bar is like communication central.
Along with Jack’s old squad of marines who still gather there and all the townfolk, bonded by the rugged lifestyle in the mountains, rivers and redwoods, where there is danger, passion, the commitment to friendship and honor, story after story emerges. After the first three Virgin River Novels were released in 2007, they scored. And the letters poured in. Once again I had to tell people to unpack those boxes, the town lived only in my heart and mind. Many letters said, simply, “Send Jack!”
Now back to Grace Valley. I still didn’t want to extend that series, but I did understand why my readers wanted to know how June and Jim and others were getting along – so whenever help was needed in Virgin River, the Grace Valley folks were more than happy to lend a hand.
And that’s when it got real interesting. Now the letters were complaining of not being able to find copies of the Grace Valley series. Online used booksellers were asking up to $100 for a used paperback! I was sending copies to readers out of my garage until my own stash was all but gone.
The publisher noticed. Not only did they want to continue the Virgin River Series, contracting for three more, then a special Christmas story, then three more, but they also got to work on bringing Grace Valley back. Grace Valley came back with all new beautiful cover art. And was closely followed by A Virgin River Christmas, which made both the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists. And that was closely followed by Second Chance Pass, (Feb 2009), Temptation Ridge (March 2009) and Paradise Valley (April 2009) – those three spent a total of twelve straight weeks on the NYT’s list. I am finishing up three more Virgin River novels – Forbidden Falls, Angel’s Peak and Moonlight Road for early 2010. And I committed to three more for 2011 and three more for 2012.
Once upon a time there was a little town, and then there was another little town that became a runaway train. And oh boy – what a ride!

Julie here again…to celebrate Robyn coming to visit, I’m giving away her first Virgin River book! Just put a comment here and if you’re in the continental US, you’re eligible! If you already have the first book, you can pick another from Robyn.
EDITED TO ADD: The winner of today’s contest is #30, Maureen! Maureen, send me an email (julie at julie leto dot com) with your snail mail address and I’ll have Amazon ship you a copy of VIRGIN RIVER right away! Thanks again to Robyn for joining us at Plotmonkeys!

By all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold over forty books to four publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her daughter, a spoiled dachshund, a haughty lynx-point Siamese and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

Morning everyone, and welcome Robyn! How wonderful to have you here. I have the first 3 books in the Virgin River trilogy (so please don’t enter me in the contest) and I’ve read the first book. Just wonderful. Jack was the hero every woman dreams of.
I have heard various comments about your books, one of them being that the heroes are a little too perfecct. How do you balance your heroes so that they strong, caring, loyal and a multitude of other characteristics without making them too much of a good thing?
I really need to read the rest of the books….

WELCOME ROBYN!!!!!!!!!! Robyn isn’t only a fantastic author she’s a really super nice person, recently helping me out in my time of need (agent search). I’m so glad she’s here in the jungle!!!!!
Comment
Stacy~, that’s really interesting…I’m not going to answer for Robyn, of course, but as a devoted reader
I have to say that the men AREN’T perfect at all. (Though they are WONDERFUL!) They come across that way at first, but as the books unfold, you start to see them more and more as real guys who happen to have an incredible code of honor. Jack, for instance, is a busybody. He can’t mind his own business, even if his reasons are altruistic. Preacher’s protective instincts can be overbearing. Paul…oh, don’t get me started on Paul! I loved him, but he wasn’t a match for Vanessa right away. He had to earn it. Same with Luke. They’re Alpha men who adore women. Literally adore. And this can cause them to be a real pain in the butt sometimes when the women are strong or trying to find their strength, which they are.
I think that reading all the books gives a very unique perspective because even once a character’s romance story is told, there’s so much more to tell about them. Jack & Mel are the leads of the first book, but their story is by no means over. I guess that’s why I couldn’t stop reading until I’d finished all the books…to date. I can’t wait to see who bought the church on eBay! (Robyn’s been teasing me…and it’s worked!)

I want to thank you so much for the Virgin River Series. I am so happy it is continuing into 2010; are there are plans for more after that? Please say yes. LOL.
I recommend this series to everyone; even strangers in Borders looking down the romance aisle.
Thank you, thank you, thank you – one very happy reader.

These books have been on my horizon forever. I always hear a lot of buzz about them but have never found the time to give them proper attention. I can tell that I’m just going to have to knock a hole in my reading schedule and slot these books in.

Good morning, everyone, and thank you for the warm welcome! Julie — what an intro! Wow, you sure make me look good. Of course it always zoops me up when someone likes something I’ve written, but when a hugely popular bestselling author loves your stuff, it is like a trip to the moon!!
Stacy — to kind of echo what Julie says about those “perfect heroes”, one of the really fun things about writing this series is the further development of some of the characters, especially the men, after their romance is resolved. It’s been fun watching Jack turn into a husband — one who routinely pisses off his wife. He’s possessive, grumpy, nosy, domineering and has a bit of a temper. And Luke — one of my favorite bad boy heroes from Temptation Ridge — well, you’d have no way of knowing this because I just barely finished the 2010 books, but there are some things Luke just can’t help — like being a terrible worrier, he has a real short fuse, and I can’t figure out who put him in charge, but he certainly thinks he is, not to mention pretty crude where women are concerned (while he thinks he’s just plain funny — I mean, he did grow up as the oldest of 5 sons and probably not the most sensitive of men!) Those guys — I gotta love ‘em, and they’re pretty perfect, I’ll give you that. Except when they’re not.
Someone asked if there would be more. Every Jan/Feb/Mar for the next 3 years. So far. I mean, it’s a town — that’s a pretty big canvas. People come, people go. I keep thinking we should find a reasonable end — but maybe not. Maybe it just goes on forever like any other town.
Again, thanks for having me. I’ll check in periodically today.

Welcome, Robin…I feel as if I have read one of your books, if not, I’ll look at your books when I get a chance :)

Robyn, Welcome. I am so glad to see you here. I love your towns. I have been reading them for years. I think the covers caught my eye in the first place.
I really do love the way you string all of the stories together. And the one where June’s Aunt resolved her old issues. Oops also gave away a major point of the plot. That was Priceless.
I adore your writing. As long as you keep em coming, I’ll keep buying ‘em.
YOU ROCK!!!!

Robyn,
I’ve only just heard of your series (within the last two weeks or so) but you’ve gotten SUCH great reviews I went and put the first VR book in my Amazon shopping cart ! Now I get the chance to win a copy
Seems someone is telling me I REALLY need to read your books ! Have a great day.

I really enjoyed your post here Robyn. Your style of writing inspires me to do better in my own writing and I simply love your work. I can’t wait until Saturday. Being a writer (still unpublished…sigh) I love to read how other authors complish their goals.

Hi Robyn!
I was introduced to your Virgin River series by Julie and the plotmonkey fans and I have to say these books will forever be in my top ten list! One question, I noticed in Paradise Valley that while the book focused on Rick and his recovery, the story line did not revolve around him in the same way that it did with other “heroes” in your past books. Was this intentional on your part or a result of the development of his story line in previous books? Thank you so much for writing stories that truly represent the emotional ramifications of war and the beauty present in the hearts of our returning veterans.
Comment
Totally concur! Absolutely love Virgin River, although I’m behind in the series a few books. Wonderful, delicious writing.
Can’t to see Saturday’s writing post from Ms. Carr.

Thanks for asking that particular question, Corrine — because in Rick there was a huge writing lesson for me.
When Virgin River was complete, my agent kept saying, “I love it, but I feel like something is missing.” As agents and editors will do, she carried on with a long list of suggestions and I just listened. Sometimes I yawned. And then she said, “What about a teenage boy? Would a teenage boy add anything?” And it happened — I heard that noise in my brain. Ping! Jack would mentor a teenage boy, help him grow into a man. And in that slowly developing character, there could not only be good story drama, but more of those “women’s issues” juxtaposed with the romance.
The First Lesson — some of the best stuff can come out of the 20th revision.
After 3 books in which Rick was an ongoing character, I was pretty much done with him. First of all — he’d already had some real tough times and gotten through them admirably. Second, by the end of the third book he was only eighteen. Now, I hate to discriminate, by I like my heroes with a little more experience.
The Second Lesson — A HUGE percentage of my reader mail asked for more of Rick. I might’ve felt Rick’s story was complete, but my readers didn’t. Another HUGE amount of mail asked for more story on The Mysterious Marijuana Man. This town, this story, is not just about what I want — it’s a collaboration with the readers.
I actually put a book aside to create one that focused more on Rick and incorporated his story with that of Dan, the mysterious marijuana man (another character I wasn’t personally driven to explore, but readers wanted it). But because Rick had been around for so many books already and was a well known and greatly loved character, I felt readers might get a little fatigued by a whole book devoted solely to him. So I decided to give his story central billing, along with Dan’s story, and also with a couple of 3-book story arcs that had been developing.
Lesson Three — Readers know what they want. I can’t give them everything they want all the time — but I can certainly listen. Anything that comes from popular demand is worth giving lots of consideration to. And it has paid off — they continue to ask for things (which gives me ideas to draw from) and they remain addicted to the series; these people have become important to them.
So — that’s how Rick ended up with at least a major part of a book. And he wasn’t even a player in the first drafts of the first four books. I went all the way back to page 1 of book #1 and wrote him in. It certainly taught me how important revision can be!

This would be a new author for me!

Welcome Robyn to the jungle…
I am sorry but I have never heard of you until today. Your books sound like a great read. If Julie loves them than I will too.
Comment
Robyn, that is fascinating. I just finished Paradise Valley and I interpreted it to be a work where three secondary characters got their stories, each almost equally–Cam and Abby (who I wanted to throttle for a good portion of the book, though I totally could see where she was coming from…she simply didn’t know Cam like we did!), Rick & Liz (man she turned into a ball-buster. Good for her!) and then Dan and Cheryl, which I thought was the sweetest story. And of course, Walt & Muriel, too–the hottest of the stories and these characters are in their 50s/60s! I thought it was the perfect “end” to one trilogy before we get into the next one.
I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us…Luke is definitely the most flawed of all the Virgin River men right now, so I can’t wait to see what trouble he has coming up! And he has all those brothers!!
Comment
I have read a couple of your books and loved them… I just bought them at random, so I do not have the complete sets… One of these days I have to buy the others, because I truly enjoyed your books! Thanks for visiting today!!!
Comment
Well Julie — in 2010 you will meet the minister who bought the church on Ebay — and he is NOT your mama’s minister. Noah is one hot preacher, with a most unusual and provocative love interest. Then Sean Riordan will be back — that story is pure fun because Sean is such a screw-off. Former fighter-jock and current spy plane pilot, he runs into an old flame, one he shouldn’t have let go, shouldn’t have treated with such a dismissive, man-on-the-move disregard. And finally — the wonderful Aiden Riordan will be back, in trouble up to his handsome eyebrows, in a very disquieting female tug of war.
As has been the case before, many of the other characters in town, including Luke, Jack and Mel, others, have smaller ongoing stories. In case it hasn’t been obvious, I LOVE to work with ensemble casts.
Comment
Hi, Robyn!
I have read the first 3 VR books, and I just loved them. They are so emotionally satisfying to read. Jack and Mel are one of my favorite couples in romance.
The rest of the series sounds wonderful, too, and they are on my TBB list. I need to re-visit VR soon!
Comment
Robyn, I’m so thrilled that there are 9 more stories to come. I can hardly wait for early 2010.
As you may remember (or not) from my email, I’ve loved this series & discovered it before many, so, have made it a point of yelling to the rafters about it. You’ve made characters that just live with readers. Mel/Jack are tied with my all-time fave couple, Suz Brockmann’s Alyssa/Sam (which is a huge compliment), but yours are less neurotic-LOL). As much as I love Jack, I love Mel more, as she’s the most gutsy, caring, strong-willed, involved in her town & its people & take-charge heroine I’ve ever read. I loooove that she & Jack, even after marriage, can’t keep their hands off each other, & the best, they can’t figure out why–LOL. It’s a great hook, & I can never get enough of them. I love how Mel’s dedicated to her patients, & though she’s a loving & caring mother, she’s not obsessed with child-caring, freely passing her kids off to her hubby at the bar/restaurant, who quickly slides them into the child-packs while he serves drinks to the customers. To me, the root of the series is how much these townspeople care & feel about each other. It’s what we all seem to be missing in our day-to-day worlds. I’ll stop raving now, but, thank you for making so many hours of my reading so memorable.

Well Paula, didn’t I just about have a heart attack — totally unaware of any reissue. So I checked Amazon — All the Mira backlist is available on Kindle, which I so appreciate, but not a new issue of paperback. For anyone who enjoyed the VR series and has a kindle, I would for sure recommend Olive Street and Never Too Late — a couple of my favorites.

I wish it was, Paula — I love that book. I think it’s some of my best work.
Cher — I’m often told that characterization is what I do best, and I’ll try to think of one or two tips before Saturday, but I’m afraid it might be one of those things I just do very slowly and redo and redo and redo — working a lot of the time by instinct rather than by clear technique. but I’ll try.

My son — the April poster boy on the Men of Virgin River calendar — has been recently reassigned for a 4 year assignment. He’s an orthopedic surgeon and will deploy to Afghanastan for 2 6 mos. tours during the next few years, the first he expects to come within 6 months. While he doesn’t like the idea of being away from his family, he’s needed there and wants to go where he can do the most good. Those are the docs that put the soldiers back together, and his going means another doctor coming home. God bless all the men and women who stand the watch.
