Let Them Eat Cake!
Julie Icon

Finally, my brother and his new bride returned home from their honeymoon in Fiji and Australia and with them came the pictures. I can finally show you the groom’s cakes that I made! The one on the right was the one that got messed up in transit…so of course, that’s the angle the photographer decided to take it from. The one in front is they cut.

The cakes themselves are four layer chocolate fudge with my famous, homemade chocolate buttercream frosting. As luck would have it, I accidentally added more cocoa to my usual recipe and the frosting came out incredibly more delicious than it normally did…and my recipe is thereby forever changed. The “goldfish” on the cake are chocolate. I had them custom made by a chocolate shop in a small town north of me. The cakes themselves were simple, but I decorated the “stands” to make it classy.

I bought the concave vases at Walmart, as well as the glass platters the cakes are standing on. Inside, I put in those battery-operated candles, white tulle and then pretty green fishing line that I’m not sure you can see…and fishing lures. Did I mention my brother loves to fish?

Here’s the bride & groom cutting the cake:

Here’s the groom feeding his cake to the beautiful bride. Notice he’s not pushing it into her face…they didn’t do that with the bride’s cake, either. Classy people, IMO.

Here’s the very happy couple:

Isn’t she gorgeous? Isn’t he handsome? Yes, I’m very proud. They will make beautiful babies…I know this because my daughter looks just like them and could have been born to them instead of me.

It was nerve-wracking to be charged with something so important, but I’m really glad I did it. I was able to improve my cake making techniques…something my now 18 year old nephew appreciates since I made him one of these cakes (sans fish) last night for his birthday!

So…let’s talk cake. What’s your favorite flavor? I’m totally into chocolate cake…though I just got a flan cake recipe that is quite yummy. I have to perfect it, though. It’s good…but with practice and ingenuity, it will soon be great.

EDITED TO ADD: OOOOH! You know we don’t pay attention to reviews unless they are fabulous, right? Well don’t miss AAR’s review of Leslie’s FADE TO BLACK! I would have given the book a DIK and think that the romance was more than equal to the suspense, but hey, I have my opinion and the reviewer has hers. Still, it’s an awesome review and we’re so proud of Leslie’s new venture!!!

Julie Leto

JulieBy all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold nearly thirty books to three publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her husband, daughter, spoiled dachshund, enormous guinea pig and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

Oh how beautiful the cakes are! And the couple is gorgeous – and they look so happy. :madlyinlove:

Believe it or not, Super KMart used to make the most incredible cake I’ve ever tasted. It was all chocolate, with this wonderful mousse-like frosting that wasn’t overly sweet. The cake melted in your mouth. It was so luscious. Sadly, I haven’t had it in years. But it as the best cake evah.

Great job, Julie. You’re right, the bride and groom are stunning, but those cakes are to die for! How creative and what a thoughtful thing to do for your brother. Leigh, who loves chocolate cake more than life itself

Oh, those cakes are awesome! Nice job! As for a favorite, if it’s cake, I’ll eat it. Yeah, I’m that picky.

Very cool cakes. Love the fish. And the lures. Great touch.

I love chocolate cake but am not a big frosting fan. I don’t like that sickly sweet stuff that so many places use. A nice buttercream or whipped frosting (my BFF makes this awesome boiled frosting).

My b’day cake is usually angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream or cheesecake. Our wedding cake was cheesecake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. mmmmm

Now I feel a trip to the cheesecake factory coming on. damn it.

Julie, you Ace of Cakes! Those are gorgeous – and so are the happy couple! As for my favorite cake…well, I’m all about the frosting, superficial thing that I am. The thicker, the creamier, the better. Throw in a gold-covered chocolate fish and I’m yours forever. Great job! Seriously, in my next life, I want to be born into your family.

    Holy Moly, Julie, gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today is my 20th Anniversary! Hubby’s in bed with a herniated disc in his back and I fell down a flight of stairs last night. Chocolate cake sounds good to me!

Happy Anniversary Carly! Hope you and hubby both feel better soon.

Julie, the cakes are beautiful, as are the bride and groom! I would love to get your chocolate buttercream frosting recipe. I love to bake cakes, but only really do it around the holidays. I make about 10 rum cakes at Christmas for gifts or gathering. My sister and BIL gave me the Kitchen-Aid Mixer a couple of years ago, and I love it. I did make my BIL his mom’s red velvet cake as a super huge thank you and he said I got it just right. It has a great buttercream frosting, but I’ve never tried to make a chocolate buttercream frosting.

    Julie,
Those pictures are beautiful, especially the cake pictures. Its 9am and Im dying for some chocolate after seeing your cake pictures. I love chocolate cake, strawberry cake, and pistachio cake (that my mom makes for me on special occassions.).

    Carly,
Sorry to hear about your hubby. Happy Anniversary by the way.

:yourock What beautiful cakes and an equally gorgeous couple.

:cake: My favorite flavor of cake is Lemon! Yum! My daughter made me a white layered cake with lemon icing for my birthday this year (it was a first for all three layered, cake & icing) all from scratch.

I make an oatmeal cake that my husband loves. It sort of tastes like a spice cake but better.

Yum-O! Those cakes look delish…you’ll have to share the recipe. I was thinking yesterday what I wanted for my birthday cake (we’ll see how hubby can screw it up as he always does…it’s just that he doesn’t like to go to multiple places for stuff) and that is it!

    The couple is gorgeous, too…

    Wow!
Those cakes are awesome. I love the way you decorated. Simple. Elegant. Beautiful.

My favorite cake is the cherry chip my mom used to make me for my birthday when I was a kid. I don’t think they make that flavor any more so I’ve switched to strawberry. :)

But if you ever decide to open a bakery, Julie, I’m coming to you for my birthday cakes and I’m changing to chocolate.

Beautiful cakes, beautiful couple. You are such a wonderful sister to make your brother’s groom cakes. :cheer:

My all time favorite cake is pineapple upside down. I love it and ask for it specifically on every birthday. LOL I am also a sucker for icing. The fluffier, creamer, sweeter the better. :cloud9:

What a gorgeous couple! And you are so multitalented, Julie! Can I be you when I grow up? Srsly! :flowers4you:

Favorite cake? Pies are more my forte but I make an awesome Chiffon Birthday Cake. It’s like an angel food cake only bigger and better.

    Happy Hump Day!

    Julie, they are beautiful!

I’m with Patsy–I love lemon cake and ask for it almost every year for my birthday. I also love spice cake. Chocolate sometimes–but only if it’s as rich and decadent as yours, and only a thin little sliver.

    Yummm…

PS: Julie, my middle discovered a brownie recipe and it is SO much like the brownies you used to bring us from that Italian bakery in Tampa. YUMMY!

Julie, Beautiful bride & groom, & the cakes look decadent. You did great. My fave cake is vanilla with strawberries around the sides. Not really a big chocolate fan.

Karen, Happy Anniversary to you & hubby. To make 20 is a great achievement. So sorry for both of your health issues. Hopefully, the daughters can pick up the slack. Get well.

Happy Anniversary, Carly! So sorry the two of you are basically out of commission. My husband had a herniated disk a few years ago. It was scary!! I don’t ever want to see him in that much pain again. Hugs to you both.

Julie, the cakes are beautiful and your brother and his wife make a gorgeous couple. When I could eat cake, my favorite was carrot cake. I still drool everytime I see one. Oh, the cream cheese frosting and those cute little frosting carrots on top…Mmmmm…

Mmmm, those cakes look yummy. And what a beautiful bride and groom! As to my favorites, I’m torn between chocolate cake with chocolate icing, and white cake with chocolate icing. And don’t forget chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream icing. Actually, I’ve never met a cake I didn’t like.

Has anyone here tried a Jello cake?
They are to die for and easy too.
You take one box yellow cake mix and follow directions for mixing
Next add 1/3 cup extra oil (on top of what the box mix asks for)
1 extra egg (in addition to box instructions)
and 1 small box jello gelatine (any flavor you like)
I like the strawberry banana myself.
Bake to box instructions and WAA LAA Jello cake!
    NO icing is required!
    YUMMY!

The bride & groom look so happy. I love the elegant simplicity of her dress, would love to see the back. Thanks for sharing with us.

Leslie, congrats on the nice review. I’m looking forward to reading your newest venture in fiction.

:hugging: Carly, Happy 20th Anniversary. Sorry to hear you are both suffering from health issues. Hope you will both be better soon. :praying:

Gorgeous pictures all around. The cakes look fabulously yummy, the bride is beautiful, and the groom is handsome. Thank you for sharing.

As for my favorite flavor of cake, I’m a bit torn. The only chocolate cake I really like is the three-hole chocolate cake my dad makes without milk or eggs. It’s super moist and so yummy. Other than that, my favorite would be lemon cake.

I’m partial to German Chocolate and Carrot Cake myself…. I could eat the whole thing in one sitting. And of course carrot cake is good for you because of the veggies…so it’s appropriate any time of the day ;)
