Whose Brand Is it?
Janelle Icon

Today we’re going to do something fun and different, and I swear it does have a purpose! :D I’m going to have you take a quiz about name branding and advertising slogan recognition. The reason? Well, as an author, a lot of us try to “brand” ourselves with catch phrases on our websites that correlate to us, as an author, and what we write. For a long time, mine was “Take a Walk on the Wilde Side”, which readers associated to my Wilde series. A brand/slogan is our little advertising “tag line”, usually paired with something visual (a lot of times I used paw prints with my slogan), and it’s something we want readers to remember, so when they see it, they automatically think of us as an author, and our books. :winking:

I really don’t know how well the whole “branding” concept works for us as authors, or even if it makes a difference, but many companies have their own branding and slogans, and I’m honestly curious to know how many of you pay attention to brands and slogans, and if they make a difference. So today is “pop quiz” day, but I promise you it’ll be fun, if a bit challenging. I’m going to send you a link, and all you have to do is answer the question provided, then return back here and post your score. And no fudging your answer, LOL! :nosegrow:

By the way, out of 17 total questions, I got 10 of them correct, and 7 of them wrong!!! :loser: I guess I don’t pay attention to slogans and branding all that much!

JanelleJanelle Denison finds it hard to believe that it’s been nearly 25 years since she first started writing romance novels. At first, it was a way to pass idle time while her husband worked swing shift, but before long it became an obsession to get published. Luckily, she kept at it (it took her over 5 years to get that first book published!) and is now a Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, and USA Today Bestselling author! Now, after selling over 45 plus novels, she finds that her Plotmonkey pals help to keep her stories fresh and unique, and she can’t imagine writing a story without their input. Janelle lives in Oregon with her husband, Don, along with two teenage daughters that keep life interesting.

I only got 2 right – might be because a lot of the brands were US ones, and with those that weren’t the ads they were linked to haven’t been shown here.

I think that how memorable brands or tag lines are does have a bit to do with how much the items appeals to you or is relevant to your needs.

I only got 7 right. The old branding is what I remember, not the newe stuff. Weird. Guess I am not paying attention any more.

I got 8 out of 17 right. However, I would like to say that the Applebee’s question wasn’t fair, as they have used all 4 choices at one time or another. I should know, I worked for them for about 3 years.

Hi, Plotmonkeys and everybody! I’m a big, huge fan of branding and think every author’s name is her brand. And I love secondary branding like the Wilde Side, Janelle! All that said, this quiz was wayyyy harder than I thought it’d be, but really fun. Did anybody go, ‘Apple. Think Different. um, shouldn’t that be differently?” And then I thought, wayyyy too serious on the grammar, Michelle. Cher, I’m sorry Carly’s blog wasn’t up yet. I had to get my kids off to school and was running late. It’s really nice to see you all again. I hope you Plotmonkeys will come for another group visit with us soon, please?

Apparently I don’t pay attention to branding. I only got 5 right.

I normally change the channel during commericals. LOL So this really didn’t surprise me, but I must confess the Target ad was the easiest. LOL

BTW Janelle I do recognize you through the “Wilde” slogan and the paw prints. I guess that shows my priorities. LOL

I guess I don’t pay attention to slogans either…I got a 6 out of 17…hey, it’s not like it was about books anyway…

I pay attention to those all the time because they are usually linked to Series that I love…Janelle, your brand roped me in…

I am going to visit Carly now…

After reading what other people got, I don’t feel so bad with only knowing five. And for one that I got right I actually read the question wrong (one of those choose the one they haven’t used, only I selected the one I thought they had used)… :blushing:

:applause: Congrats to those who did moderately well on the quiz!

Is this good or bad? I got 9 right, 8 wrong. My day job? Marketing communications.

Apparently when it comes to branding, I’m visually oriented, because recognizing the brand (even when there weren’t words with it) was a cinch.

I also think aurally, I guess, because I kept hearing voices using the lines.

    Sad, just sad.

I got 9 of 17 correct which is worse than I thought I would do but not bad compared to what other people are reproting. A couple I got wrong because I second guessed myself…moral is to always go with the first guess. Interesting quiz though.

Well, after reading other scores I don’t feel to bad about only getting 6 right!! :waving: Usually I am reading during commercials, taking a potty break, going to the kitchen, checking email…you get the picture! I really don’t pay that much attention to commercials. I was surprised at some of the ones I did miss but not others.

I actually think I pay more attention to graphic branding – like the Target Bulls Eye, the Apple, etc. than word slogans. I do think word slogans are important though, but my memory goes more towards the visual. I think.

Does this date me? I got 4 right, but I so remember some of the ones I got wrong being marketed with the products. Besides, that quiz was somewhat jaded because most of it was for commercials I never see during the programs that I watch. I think they should have done that quiz by demographics to get a more accurate picture of who’s paying attention to what.

Of course, with the DVR, I just skip the commercials anyway…..
