If Only They Could Talk
Janelle Icon

My apologies for not being around much the past week. My mother has been here from California and she spent Mother’s Day weekend with us, which was wonderful. We’ve been busy and my computer time has been minimal — which is why I haven’t been around. She left yesterday, so things should be getting back to normal for me!

Now, on to today’s blog topic, which is about our precious pets and my wish that they could talk. Like when they’re sick or not feeling well. A couple of days ago after taking our dog, Sandie, out for her daily walk, she came home and I went to scratch her belly and I noticed that there was blood on her fur near where she urinates. The first thing I did was check to see where the blood was coming from — if maybe she’d been cut or had gotten scraped somehow. She was fine, which led me to believe she had blood in her urine! :( Of course this was on Sunday, when the vet’s office isn’t open — as well as later in the afternoon, so I had to wait until Monday morning to get her into the doctor’s.

zzz1

My first thought was, “how long as this been going on?” Followed quickly by “is she in any kind of pain?”. I’m assuming at this point that she had a bladder infection, and if you’ve ever had one of those you know how painful they can be! :drama: The only thing I could do was check her out physically to see if there had been any signs that she wasn’t feeling well that I might have missed. Her nose was wet and cold. Her pretty eyes were bright and happy. She was wagging her tail and playing with us, and she was eating her food and drinking her water. Truly, she wasn’t acting like she was “sick” and showed no outward signs of distress or discomfort.

Monday morning I took her to the vet’s and they found “crystals” in her urine. It looked like a bladder infection and they gave me some strong antibiotics to give to her, and I have to take in another urine sample in about a week to make sure the infection is cleared up, and there isn’t an underlying problem.

Whenever our kids are sick, they can tell us. But what about our fur babies? They have no way of telling us how they feel, and because of that it’s difficult for us as their parents to catch any kind of illness early on. I thought to myself, if only Sandie could talk she would have told me that something wasn’t right — and I would have taken care of the problem right away.

So, today’s blog is all about the special pet in your life. If your pet could talk, what do you think they’d tell you?

JanelleJanelle Denison finds it hard to believe that it’s been nearly 25 years since she first started writing romance novels. At first, it was a way to pass idle time while her husband worked swing shift, but before long it became an obsession to get published. Luckily, she kept at it (it took her over 5 years to get that first book published!) and is now a Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, and USA Today Bestselling author! Now, after selling over 45 plus novels, she finds that her Plotmonkey pals help to keep her stories fresh and unique, and she can’t imagine writing a story without their input. Janelle lives in Oregon with her husband, Don, along with two teenage daughters that keep life interesting.

I don’t have fur babies, but I remember the relief when my oldest (and my other boys) could tell me what hurt and how they are feeling. Of course, now they say, “my ear hurts” and I rush them to the doctor. That’s my weakness.

Janelle, I’m so glad your fur baby is going to be okay. I hate it when they get sick.

Dulcie was obviously sick earlier this week. She was very lethargic, and clingy (I told Bruce I felt like somebody had slathered her with Super Glue and stuck her to my leg.) She also had one particular toy that she would NOT let out of her mouth! And she kept whimpering.

But she was eating, she was drinking, she was going to the bathrooom regularly, so I figured I’d give it a day or two to play out.

Yesterday she woke up her crazy, spry, bouncing-off-the-walls self.

Yeah, it would have been a whole lot easier if she could have told me what was wrong, but it’s funny how you can always tell when there is!

Charlie :dog: would say “I really am a lap dog and you should take me eveyrwhere with you!” I am dealing with another tick, although they all get their meds, he managed to get one stuck in his leg. :sigh:

Max and Isis would both let me know that although they liked going for a ride today, dropping them at the groomer’s was not what they had in mind. I imagine they are plotting against me.

Blue would let me know how upset he was that he had to go in the cage when I left with the short and stubbies, although the entire neighborhood heard him. I wonder how long he yelped? (Can’t let him wander when he is alone-he gets into way too much trouble.

All three cats would want to know why these dogs are invading their territory and when are they leaving.

tyring to figure out when they are sick or not on their game and what is wrong is a full time job around here. One of the cats has very dry skin, but yet doesn’t like Tuna or Salmon in oil-veggie or olive. She doesnt like the gravy for skin and coat. I don’t know what to do, as taking her out of the house is very tramatic to her.

    i need chocolate.

Hope your fur baby is better. I have 2 dogs that totally dominate our lives. They don’t need to talk they communicate what they want without having to!
    1. 06.45 – whine = time to get up mum I need to pee.
    2. 07.00 – whine = where’s my chew stick? (breakfast)
    3. 08.30 – 09.00 – whine = time for our walk.
    4. 09.00 – 1400 – quiet = I’m tired – time to sleep
    5. 1400 – 1500 – whine = afternoon walk time
    6 1600 – 1700 – whine/look at you = whats for dinner?
    7. 1900 – whine = time for bed!
I kid you not! I don’t need an alarm clock anymore. Take care. Caroline x

Caroline- I feel your pain. I know when it is 5am, 6am, 5pm and 10pm without a clock either.

Never mention the words ride, treet, cheese or walk. Leads to a stampede!

Isn’t it hilarious how our animals can tell time?

This past year my oldest fur baby (dog) started pacing all day long. My vet told me pacing like that is a sign she was in pain. They started treatment for arthritis (using human drug on $4 Walmart prescription plan, thank goodness, ’cause the dog version of the same drug is very spendy!). Now she only paces in the morning just about as long as it takes her am meds to get into her system.

I hope your fur baby is better soon and the next urine test shows the infection all cleared with no underlying cause.

:dogrun: I hope your baby feels better soon!
I lost two dogs within 6 months of each other last year. It was quite a shock. I knew the older one was not well. Miss Fannie Mae was one week short of her 14th birthday but the other Miss Molly was fine when we let her out one morning and when I let her in an hour later she laid down on Miss Fannies bed and within an hour she had passed away. I wish she could have told me that she wasn’t feeling well. Molly was 11. I sometimes think Miss Molly died of a broken heart after Miss Fannie died.
My babies I have left are Miss Princess our 5 year old Schnauzer-Terrier mix and Ozzy. He’s a 2 year old Black lad mix. I sometimes think the way he looks at me he understands every word I say. I think if he could talk he would constantly be telling me how he loves my homemade peanut butter dog cookies and would I please go make him some. Or perhaps he would simply say “Hey lets dump dad and you and me have dinner without him!” LOL He doesn’t like my husband getting too close. He is jealous! Yeah I have the love of two brown eyed men buying for my attention! What more could a gal ask for? LOL :rotfl1:

I’m sure Sandi is grateful for your loving care. Our 3-year old ferret is suffering similarly, with a bladder infection. Usually he and our 15-year old dog are very healthy. They are such trusting, sweet additions to the family. I’m sure if they could talk, they’d tell us, “I love you. Just take care of me and love me back.” :cloud9:

Janelle, I just spend four hours at three different vets with Button, the world’s largest guinea pig. ;) His eye is swollen and red. He can’t blink, so the cornea is drying out. I have another appointment at 4:15pm with an exotic pet specialist (my vet is off today, his backup vet–who was awesome and didn’t charge me to see him–sent me to a vet ophthalmologist, who made me wait for 1-1/2 hours before telling me they didn’t have time to see him… :dart:

Hopefully, vet #4 will come through for us.

Hopefully, Sandie will be better soon!

(And Lady has a staph infection…when it rains, it pours.)

Janelle, I hope you had a good visit with your Mom.

I am sorry to hear that Sandie is having problems. Hopefully the medication will take care of it soon.

There are no fur babies at my house any longer. I do take care of pets for several couples when they travel. One of the dogs I take care of tries to talk to me but I’m never sure what he wants! Sometimes I figure it out, sometimes not. Mostly they are all easy to take care and mostly well behaved. The owners are all wonderful people that are good to me.

    I have two cats.

The girl is Zippa.. If she could talk she would say.. “I love you, but only on my terms”

Zeeba, our boy cat would say “Pay more attention to me, now, now, now, now… are you looking at me now? It is all about me and how cute I am!” He might have been a dog in his last life..

Donna- we gave up on the stupid eye medicine they always give us. They hate it and it stings. Johnson’s Baby Shampoo works just as well, if not better, and it doesn’t hurt. If they can’t see you, give it a try until they can. Just wet the area, spread a little shampoo on and then rinse it off or use a soft, wet washcloth. (Do not reuse the same cloth, wash it). (BTW, it’s the same thing my eye dr told me to use with pink eye and it also takes of waterproof makeup- I do it daily in the shower. No more pink eye or allergy eyes.)

No fur babies for me, but I can pretty much tell you what my Dad’s dog is thinking most of the time. She either wants to eat whatever you have or wants to sleep on the front porch. These are her two favorite things to do in the world. If my Dad isn’t in bed when she thinks they should, she will pull on him until he puts her blanket on the bed so she can go to sleep.

    Hope Sandie feels better soon.

I have one cat who thinks she is a dog. Abby would say mommy I love you but please continue to feed me Friskies wet food. She loves to play with her laser pointer and hair scrunchies.

I don’t think I’d want our pets to talk, it’s noisy enough around hear already. We have 4 dogs – one a 3 month old puppy. The puppy wants to play, the others are too old and cranky. The youngest is an 8 year old terrier and she is the worst of the lot. Every time the puppy gets close, she goes crazy barking. The other 2 older ones are tolerating her better. Then there are the 2 old cats (12 and 6) who have turned into puppy chew toys. She isn’t hurting them, but the howls would make you think she was. We have 3 peacocks (2 male and 1 female). It is breeding season. They are noisier than usual. They are great watch dogs, although tonight they were yelling at the thunder. The snake is the only quiet one in the bunch. Why would I want a python talking to me? I’m not Harry Potter.

I’m glad your fur baby is getting better. My fur baby (Tiger a large orange tabby) would say thank you for rescuing me from the shelter 8 years ago. For a week or so he wasn’t himself, no specific symptoms until last week, when he started drinking bowls of water so off the vets where he was diagnosed as diabetic. It is amazing that he knows when 10 am and 10 pm is, as he comes to get me and meows till I go to the frig to get his insulin and give him his shot. Life just wouldn’t be the same without them.
