Saturday Guest Blogger: Karen Hawkins!
Julie Icon

I have so many things I could tell you about Karen Hawkins. The first that comes to mind is how gorgeous she is. Second, how funny. And third, how much fun it is to go with her to get a margarita or Chinese food and chit-chat for hours on end. I love her books as much as I love her, and I’m thrilled to have her here to guest blog when her first contemporary romance, TALK OF THE TOWN, is out this month! Our readers seem to love great contemporaries…and here is one! This blog is open to both readers and writers…as it’s a subject we all share! Thanks so much, Karen, for stopping by today…and hon, we’ve got to get together soon. Let’s do Italian this time.

In my professional I-watch-people-all-the-time-so-I-know-these-things way, I have decided that there are four personality types:

1) Snogger Dodgers – people who get things done and get them done right, the first time, the only time, and b’god the best time.

2) Slooper Snails – people who never get things done and, frankly, don’t seem to care.

3) Spoinker L’Doinks – people who are always trying to get things done, but can’t because they either don’t know what really needs done or can’t decide what needs to be done first.

And, last but not least, the

4) Snickety Wiggins – people who get things done, but barely on time and usually leave skid marks as they sliiiide into their deadline, hair on fire and butts in a sling, hearts beating a frantic pace.

My cousin, Marty, is a Snogger Dodger. She’s had her wedding planned since she was three years old, and has all of her tax forms are from the last twenty-seven years color-coded. She has the clothes hanging in her closets from longest to shortest, puts up her Christmas ornaments the day after Thanksgiving and takes them down the day after Christmas. She eats wholesome, home cooked meals and has never been a pound overweight. We all hate her.

My mother is a Slooper Snail. She enjoys life, does what she wants, when she wants, and doesn’t really care about troublesome things like deadlines. She takes a lovely nap every afternoon, never stresses over things, rarely raises her voice, and looks like she’s thirty-two even though she’s sixty+. We think she made a pact with the devil.

My next door neighbor, Matilda Headly, is a Spoinker L’Doink. Her entire life is in chaos. She’s always TRYING to get things done, but never seems to get there from here. Oddly enough, she THINKS she’s good at organizing and so is in charge of an awful lot of things – the Girl Scout cookie sale, the church bazaar, the local animal shelter’s Pets N Pats day.

She has folders, file cabinets, a Palm Pilot, and really big hair (I don’ t know why the big hair is a part of that scheme, but it is). However, even while carrying around all of her organizational bounty, she’s forever telling us how tired she is, how people let her down, the way things didn’t/don’t turn out right because of the weather or a misunderstanding or some signs that were missing or place wrongly, or some other misfortune. Things seem to get done, though not well and usually not because of her. Things are much more likely to get done in spite of her.

I’m a Snickety Wiggin. I get things done, but barely. It takes every ounce of strength to push that rock up the last few inches of the hill. I can’t multi-task because that would mean I’d have to ‘change gears.’ Snickety Wiggins don’t ‘change gears.’ We strip them. Therefore we cannot ‘change gears’ until we finish our project, whatever that may be, or we simply won’t finish our project — at all.

For example, I began to put up my Christmas Tree two weeks ago, but then, while hanging the second strand of lights, someone called. I put down the decorations and answered the ten minute phone call. Now, two weeks later, my tree is still not decorated and I’ve lost the phone. I’m probably the only person in Orlando who will finish decorating their tree on December 25th at eleven p.m. Worse, it’ll be mid-February before I get around to taking it down.

I know these things. I have ‘a pattern.’ Worse, it affects my writing life, too. When I was writing my book (just out this month!) TALK OF THE TOWN, if I got one email, it would distract me so badly that I wouldn’t write another word all day, EVEN IF IT WAS SPAM.

So, which are you? Are you a Snickety Wiggin procrastinator, too? Or are you a Spoinker L’Doink, the seems-organized-from-a-distance-but-isn’t-really? A Snogger Dodger, organized with a vengeance? Or a Slooper Snail, unorganized and doesn’t care? How does this affect the way you do things? Which would you be if you could chose? And, most importantly of all, when will you put up your Christmas Tree and when, if ever, do you think you’ll take it down?

Julie Leto

JulieBy all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold over forty books to four publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her daughter, a spoiled dachshund, a haughty lynx-point Siamese and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

Welcome Karen!!!!!!!! None of the other plotmonkeys know this but I bought your book, started it, was so blown away laughing I wanted you to guest blog, was going to ask Julie who’s in charge but never remembered to do it! Guess what? You’re here anyway, LOL! Hurray!!!!! Guess that makes me a Snickety Wiggin too! Considering I’m on the third massive rewrite of only 100 pages of a book due too soon, that proves it.

Tell me something … OK tell me a few things:
    1. Are you going to write more contemporaries? (PLEASE say YES) and how often?
    2. Did you plot this sucker from beginning to end first? (PLEASE say NO you flew by the seat of your pants? I plot with my monkeys, then somehow end up flying anyway).
    3. Did you plot the town and the people or make them up as you went along? (PLEASE say made them up as you went along)
I think I had more questions for you, so assume I’ll be back! :ohno:

GASP! CARLY PHILLIPS LIKES MY BOOK!

Hold on, everyone, while I have a total fan girl moment . . . EEEEEEK!

And yes, you sound just like a Snickety Wiggin, too. All good SWs are filled with gonna-dos that never quite get done, or that get done but baaaarrrrely!

    As for your questions:

    1. I’m scheduled to write another contemporary as soon as I finish the book I’m writing now — which is the final book in my historical MacLean Curse Series.

    2. I always plot and start right on target, but as I write, my characters sometimes won’t ‘walk the walk’ and I’ll have to stop and replot every few chapters to keep the train on track.

    3. I plotted the town and people AND met new ones as I wrote. I had a whole notebook about the town and people, but discovered new people and businesses as I wrote. For example, Ethan the sexy biker, just walked into Micki and Maud’s — and was I ever surprised!

Not sure when we will put up the tree my 3 year old wants it up I’d say he was asking in September but then he and my boxer will take the ornaments off. and I will take it down right after Christmas.

G’mornin’, Karen! Wow, Carly, you’re up early. Glad to see you both! Questions first (or the answers to, anyway)…

Christmas tree – my *tree* is a three-dimensional cactus made of barbwire. It stands about five feet tall and has chili pepper lights. (We had a Rottweiler who ate the *real* tree.) It stays up year round back in the corner of the living room we only use on Christmas morning.

I’m a Snickety Snail or a Slooper Wiggin, depending on the day. (See, there’s always an exception and I’m quite exceptional :rotfl1: ) By which I mean that I exhibit traits of both the Slooper Snail and the Snickety Wiggin on any given day but some days, the tendency trends closer to one or the other.

My question is, can a Snogger Dodger find true love with a Slooper Snail and will a Spoinker L’Doinks ever get the HEA with a Snickety Wiggin?

*sighs loudly as she adds ANOTHER great book to her BIN list* *writes letter to Santa for very LARGE bookstore gift card*

Have a great day, ladies. I’m 1900 words away from finishing my NaNoWriMo novel and then I can return to you know…living again. Plus reading all those books on my TBR pile and editing Faerie Fate before my editor comes hunting with a large caliber Nerf gun.

    Hi Karen!!

:rotfl1: As I read through each of the descriptions I immediately thought, “Mmm..hmm.. that’s my mother. Oh yeah, that second one is my son. Umm…that one kind of sounds like me. Oh, no, that one’s me!”

I am pretty organized, but I’m scatter-brained. I know exactly where everything is, but I’m so easily distracted. Just like you with the phone, that is exactly like something that would happen to me.

I have to play games with myself and treat myself like a two year old. “Sit in this chair and write for thirty minutes. Then, you can check the e-mail for five minutes. No more. But, after you write another thirty minutes – or finish this chapter, whichever comes first – then you can get up and go get a snack.” :biggroan But it works, so….

B&N called and my copy of “Phantom Touch” is finally in. When I stop on my way back into town tomorrow evening I’ll grab a copy of “Talk of the Town” as well.

Your blog was pretty funny…I would say that I am #4, but I wax and wane between all four types…I remember a time in my life when I used to be just a #1…being in the army contributed to that…then I went through the I don’t give a crap phase, but it never made me happy…

I don’t know which one I am right now…sort of on the line of something…

I hope that everyone had a great time with there families this past Thanxgiving…

Michele, welcome to the world of Snickety Wiggin! We’re late, but happy!

Silver, good luck with the writing and yes, I think different types can marry other types. That’s what makes the world go ’round! Opposites attract, but whether than can put up with each other’s ‘methods’ is a whole other question.

Alannah, I play games with myself, too! I’ll break tasks into smaller pieces and give myself a reward if and when I get them done. It’s the only way I can accomplish anything.

Thanks for the welcome, Katie! I admire your Snogger Dodger capabilities. If I could choose who I want to be, that would be it.

Tricia, I’m so glad you liked the book! I met my fiancee’ while researching this book, so it’s very special to me in a lot of ways.

Stacy, hello to a fellow goddess! Those Slooper Snails have it made. They just don’t care. I want some of that!

Pat, some people assume different characters for different tasks. My sister is very Snogger Dodger at work, and a complete Spoinker L’Doink at home.

Tina, I’ll see you in the stores Christmas Eve! I’ve bought the BEST presents then, too, because a lot of people while say the week before Christmas, “You know, I hope someone gets me … for Christmas.” Eureka!

Hi Paula! Thanks for the welcome to the jungle! Julie Leto is a long time friend and oh, she’s a sweetie.

As for the personality characteristics, like you, I tend to have some of each, although (sadly) I’m pretty firmly in the Snickety Wiggins column. *sigh* It would be perfect if you could choose which one you want for each project.

TALK OF THE TOWN is actually my hmm …. I don’t know how many. Let me count … one, two … six, seven … fifteen — yup, it’s my fifteenth book. TOTT is my first ever contemporary romance, though. Previous to this, I’ve written a slew of humorous Regency era historicals. The last one, TO CATCH A HIGHLANDER, hit the NY Times list at #17. I’ve got fingers crossed that TOTT will make a splash, too!

I am definitely a cross between a Snickety Wiggins and a Snogger Dodger. I’m not QUITE as organized as the latter, but I do get things done pretty well, I think. But sometimes it’s RIGHT under deadline.

For example, the SD in me planned everything out before my recent surgery, so that I am right on schedule for my book due Jan. 1st. But really, it was the fact that this was an easy book that made that possible. My book from hell (no, I won’t say which one it was) was la-a-ate, and I had to scramble to get it in. So I think my SD or SW-ness depends on circumstances.

And Karen, I can’t wait to read Talk of the Town! As soon as I can leave the house to buy my copy, I will. Hmm, maybe I should order online. I keep MEANING to do that, but …

Yes, I definitely have some SW in me.

I still have the climax and the HEA to go (my ultimate goal is 55-60K) but I’m going to take a couple of days off, read, make my list of new books to add to the pile (TOTT at the top since Phantom is in the mail from Amazon), clean house, do laundry (my family will be thrilled :rotfl1: )

Oh for goodness’ sakes, I am definately a snickety wiggin. I can procrastinate with the best of them

Kid heading 3000 miles away Jan 1 for college- packed yet? Hahaha. Although I have been nagging here since all the UPS stuff has to go out before we leave on vacation.

The light are up and on outside though- they have to be on T-day night, although they were early this year since we were away.

The tree always goes up T-day weekend, except for this year. Since we will all be in Mouseland for the holiday, I am not putting one up. The cats will only tear it down while we are gone.

And it has been Feb and March before I take it down- Valentine’s Day Tree, St Patrick’s Day Tree, Easter Tree- you name it, we’ve had it.

Don’t ask about the Flamingo Tree. :rotfl1:

But only the bottom half lights up. The string covering the top half *did* light up when I tested it, but it doesn’t seem to now, and I haven’t the wherewithal to pull it back off and figure out what’s wrong and fix it. ToTT sounds terrific! I’ll definitely be adding that to the must-acquire list! And I loved your Ask Reeves, and do hope you’ll be adding more to this series someday!

Judy f, thanks! I can TOTALLY agree that, as a firm Snickety Wiggin, those Snogger Dodgers with their personally signed, stamped and mailed Christmas cards by Nov. 1st can be VERY annoying! They make me tired just watching them.

Colleen, I love dogs. I have two right now and am thinking of getting a service dog to train. It would be SUCH fun, although I’m not sure how I’d do giving it up afterward. My lip’s quivering just thinking about it.

Sabrina, having known you for oh, a few months or so, I’d agree you have both SW and SD goin’ on there. You are WAY more SD than I am, and you always seem on schedule. Fiona, I just love decorating the Christmas tree! It’s my favorite holiday tradition. I put on the music, make some egg nog, pour some wine for my sweetie and we hum carols and hang ornaments. The kids used to do it with us, but they’re in college, so now I put the tree up beforehand so it’s waiting on them when they come.

Hellllo, fellow goddess Amy! I’m delighted you enjoyed TALK OF THE TOWN! You sound like you have your holiday schedule down pat — PLUS it’s flexible! That sounds very healthy to me. See you on the mount!

Julie, I want PHANTOM TOUCH band plan on being in my local B & N bright and early Tuesday night, money in hand, ready to purchase! I loooove the premise! A magical sword, a kick butt heroine, and a time traveling hero … YUM!!!!!!

Silver, enjoy your nap! It’s such an important part of the creative process. Seriously, I read last week that if you take an hour’s nap every day, you score much higher on IQ tests. I think we should all write to our employers and discuss this development even if we have to bribe them with pecan pie.

    Oh yeah. It’s THAT important.

Hi Gannon! Oh, that was the BEST review — made me get all teary-eyed. You never know if the characters are as vivid to a reader as they seem to be inside your mind, so it was AWESOME to see that you ‘get’ them so clearly!

Janelle, I think you’re right — a lot of authors seem to be SWs. Must be that creative spirit warring off the internal organizational enzymes, darn it!

I’m delighted you have TOTT! I wanted to write that book for almost six years, so it was awesome to finally be able to do it. Every time I see it on a shelf, I grin like a loon. :D

Carly, the next story is about Mark (Roxie’s brother, the accountant) and the dispatcher-now-reporter Susan. Tundy and the Murder Mystery Club are hot on the trail of a new set of clues and all sorts of hapless people get pulled into their mayhem.

I agree with you — I think contemporaries are definitely on their way back. Certainly this one has done well so far — #5 on Borders, #5 on Bookscan, #103 on the USAToday — not bad for a genre change during Christmas book season! My editor and I are happy as clams!

So ev . . . tell us about the flamingo tree! (Yeah, I know you said not to ask, but that’s throwing the gauntlet to a story teller, so … spill!)

One year, I hung Valentine’s hearts on my Christmas tree so people would quite saying, “Your Christmas tree is still up!” as if I hadn’t noticed. That way, I could say, “EXCUSE ME, but that’s obviously a VALENTINE’S TREE! Sheesh!”

Oh, Fedora, the dreaded ‘lights at the top won’t work’ scenario! That’s happened to me before and I usually just wrap an entire new strand around the top of the tree and plug it in where the bad lights were plugged and then leave the bad lights up. No one can really seem them from a distance. Oh yeah, it’s lazy, but hey, ya do what ya gots to do, right? Us Snickety Wiggins know that!

As for my Reeves series, I’d love to do the other childrens’ stories — there are nine total — but for now, I don’t really know what I’m writing for the historical field after I’m through with the final MacLean book. I just know I’m going to write something! Guess I’d better get to thinking about it because I’m almost done with the final MacLean story right now! EEK! ANOTHER DEADLINE!

    I’m a combination of a
Snogger Dodger and a Snickety Wiggins. I get it done , but not always the first time.
I put my tree and decorative lights up on Dec 1 and take them down on Dec 26.

Hi Karen, what an interesting & fun blog for today. Welcome to the Jungle!

These days I don’t put up a tree. The place I am in is way to small for even a small tree! I will decorate with candles, Christmas knick-knacks & such! When I still had a family at home my tree usually went up the first weekend in December and came down the day after Christmas. One reason I always took it down right after is because my oldest daughter was born on December 28 and I wanted to make sure it was never considered a part of Christmas. Besides once the presents are open the tree looks a bit sad! Now that my two daughters are grown & gone with families of their own it doesn’t matter much if there is a tree, I’m the only one here!!

I’m one of those that doesn’t fit into just one category but more than one!! Mostly, I think, I’m #4 SW but I don’t always leave everything until the last minute. Somehow I do manage to get things done on time. Since I am now retired deadlines are not as set in stone and I have more time to do things which means I end up putting it off to long—sometimes!

Karen, I’m going to shop & go to a couple of bookstores next week. I’ll put your book on my list.

Thanks for visiting us today and entertaining us.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend Everyone. :givethaks :turk2 Leftovers anyone??!!

Karen, congrats on USA Today!!! And WOW on the Bookscan numbers and Borders, too. I’ll be at B&N myself on Monday to pick up TOTT since I can’t get it for my Kindle. :ohno: I kept waiting for it to come available…sometimes Kindle releases are a few days after the book releases…but it’s been a week. Do check with Pocket and find out what the deal is! (In the meantime, I keep clicking the “I want it for my Kindle button!”)

Karen, you should definitely mention the Kindle thing to Pocket. When Snowy Night came out a few weeks ago, the Kindle release was delayed, for no reason that I could say. I mentioned it to Pocket and it was out in a day or two. I think they get behind or something.

Oh, Sabrina! I hope they can get it fixed. I so want this book on my Kindle. It’s become my lifeline to reading lately.

Estella, you’re a better woman than I — you have ‘a plan’ and it sounds like you stick to it. Me, I have a plan, that I have to change it when I don’t get something done in time. It’s a sad, sad bidness!

Donna M, aren’t Thanksgiving leftovers the BEST ever? I love them. It was hard leaving my mother’s house this morning because she has them all in her fridge! I’m with you on the tree thing … for now, I’ll put one up, but soon, when the kids have their own Christmases, I’ll probably just do some lights and things. Ah, the beauty of simplifying!

Hi Julie! We need to go out for margaritas, woman! I’ll ask about the Kindle, but my understanding is that it’s in the works. I’ll get details on Monday, but so far they’ve put them all on Kindle, so I think TOTT will be there, too. I hope so, anyway!

    Hi Karen~

I am a snickety wiggins…I get things done but it is often at the very last minute!!
We have not put up on our tree yet, but I would imagine that we will do it in the next few days as the kids will want it up. They have been helping Grandma put up her tree the last few days.

    Happy Holidays

Besides Kindle, tell Sony they need to get a move on too for the book. It’s not up yet either.

I can get Julie’s new one from BOB but not Sony. And I am not sure BOB supports the new Sony 700, which I got this weekend for an early Xmas since we will be travelling.

I thought I would order a Kindle too and compare them since I have until Jan17 to return the Sony, but they are on back order for a while. Oh, well, my daughter wants a Sony and I can always pass it on to her if I like the Kindle better I suppose.

As for the Flamingo tree- plastic yard Flamingos started as a joke with my hubby, before we were married- he hates them, so the kids bought him a bunch. When I moved here I found where they were hidden and proceeded to put them in the yard.

Then the kids added other things to the collection. Then my mother and my BFF. And I started to pick up Xmas Ornaments wherever we went. And lights. So I had to do a theme tree. I do one every year but that is my favorite theme.

Hubby went and entire week before he decided to make a comment about it- and then he only rolled his eyes.
I am such a :loser: at times.

I also have a light up one that I keep in the yard. :rotfl1:

I will definitely call my editor first thing Monday morning and ask her to look into ‘the case of the missing ebook.’ I daresay someone just hasn’t updated something yet.

Thank you all for having me here — it’s been awesome hanging with the plot monkeys!

And Julie . . . did you say something about margaritas? I can never say no to a good gossip and a frosty ‘m!’

Hi Karen, welcome to the Jungle!! Loved the blog! So funny!

I am a day late and I so missed you guys on Saturday. But my Saturday was a little nuts and couldn’t be helped. I didn’t even get to check my e-mail. Yikes! My M-I-L had to go to the airport to go home and we took Lilly to to see the Nutcracker where we met a bunch of her friends then went out to dinner…so it was a busy day.

I must say I am a Snogger Dodger. I am a planner. I make lists. I hate being late for anything!! So you can imagine how I feel visiting the Jungle an ENTIRE day late!!

I have one of those daytimers so you can see the entire month spread out on two pages and it is always open on my desk so I can see everything that is coming up that month. I usually check it once more before I go to bed just to make sure I’m on track for the next day. I have thought about getting a Blackberry but then I couldn’t just see the whole month at a glance. I’d have to click through several screens and that would make me nuts.

Anyway, hope you guys had a great day and sorry I’m so late getting here…

    Cher :jiveturkey:

Cher, I’m a mix. I make lists. Cross off lists. Get things done. Arrive early. And write like a Snogger Dodger. With a list. :writeblock: :danmonk
