Recently there has been some discussion about whether pubbed authors should discuss political issues. FWIW: think that if they want to and can do it intelligently and reasonably, they should feel free. However, we’re not going to go there on Plotmonkeys.
Not least of which because we monkeys not all in agreement.
(And yet, somehow, we remain the best of friends…go figure. So what’s up with this “You’re blue/you’re red I can’t like you” nonsense?)
Anyway, I digress. The only thing I want to say about the upcoming election is this…VOTE!
This is probably the most important presidential election of the past 30 years. It really, REALLY matters. So please, make an effort to vote this time. Not telling you how to vote, obviously, just DO it. And to help you do it, below is a link to a website that lists state-by-state information on how to register and when the last day to register is.
It is, unfortunately, already too late in several states. But not in all. So please, if you’re not registered, check it out:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/17/94016/0264
(FYI: The above site has a very liberal slant. I’m not pushing it for that reason, it’s only because it’s the best one I found when I did a Google search on state-by-state voting registration deadlines!)
I’d love to see this country set records for voter turnout this year. With everything that has gone on in Washington in recent days, it’s about time the American people were actually heard.
Rant over.

Warm wishes for a Happy Birthday go out to Plotmonkey Pal Gigi Hicks today! We hope you have a fabulous, fun-filled day!

Leslie Kelly used to say she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up, but then she discovered Nancy Drew books. Being a flashlight-under-the-covers-nose-in-book reader throughout her childhood, she couldn’t think of anything else she’d rather do as an adult than continue to lose herself in fictional stories. Her real life marriage of 20 years to the man of her dreams is a constant reinforcement that happily-ever-afters really can happen…and that they’re worth writing about. Living in Maryland, Leslie spends her non-writing time laughing a lot with the above-mentioned romance hero and their three daughters. Though an author of more than thirty sexy, contemporary comedies, she has recently branched out to write dark romantic suspense under the pseudonym Leslie Parrish.

Yes, we have no right to complain if we are not going to do our part and VOTE! Thanx for the reminder.

The final day to register to vote in Tennessee was yesterday, but I’ve been registered since my 18th birthday, so now I’m just waiting for the early voting to begin. I’m really excited about watching the debate tonight, just wish I could have actually been at Belmont to witness history(I’m in Nashville).
I agree that if you don’t vote, you don’t have the right to complain.

“So what’s up with this “You’re blue/you’re red I can’t like you” nonsense?”
Exactly. I don’t get it, either.
Happy Birthday, Gigi!

I don’t get the “I can’t like you because you don’t believe the same way as me” thing.
I am a big believer in voting. I registered when I was 17 (I was 18 by the election). I have never missed one. It has been 20 years of voting…whew!
Comment
As far as voting, I haven’t missed an election. When Clinton ran for his first term, I wasn’t old enough to vote (1 year shy) so I worked in his local campaign office. LOL I have tried not to push my politic views on anyone this year but have stressed the importance of every vote, no matter who it’s placed on.
I come from a family with completly different political views and somehow even in this turbulent electoral year we still love and get along. Of course, we have had heated arguments, but we still hug at the end and offer the “good point” compliment. LOL
Comment
Patty L…in my family, we call it a ‘mixed marriage”. Oddly, enough, all four of us kids agree in our political views…
ROCK THE VOTE!

What a timely message, Leslie. I don’t get all the hate and invective spewing from BOTH sides and I’ve seen long-standing friendships come to an end this year because of it. It’s scary. I’ll be watching the election curiously and will wonder if this is the one that finally kills off the electoral college. That, however, is a debate for a different space.
Have a great day, Gigi!
In fact, I hope ALL the Jungle buddies have a great day!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIGI!!
I will be voting even sooner than Nov 4th because I’m doing the mail in ballot.
No comment on the political stuff
Have a great day all,
Cher

 His attitude drives me nuts.

Happy Birthday, Gigi!
Honey and I don’t always agree when it comes to elections,
but we do agree on getting ourselves into the booths to VOTE!

People that don’t vote really upset me! I always urge people to vote then they have a right to complain otherwise, be quiet!!
The voting age was 21 when I rolled around to that big step in life. In all the years I have been able to vote I’ve only missed once. Not a bad record when you have been voting as long as I have. :giggle:
Not only do I urge people to register but don’t forget to register again if you’ve moved. That was one of the many things I had to remember when I recently moved.
Great idea Leslie to remind people how important it is. Two of my long time friends, they have been married for over 50 years, have different political views but they respect the differences. They are a good example of marriage.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Leslie. I don’t care how anyone else votes as long as they actually get out there and DO it. My mom helped my brother-in-law’s niece register over the weekend so she can vote. Voting is one of those civic rights that should be exercised and I intend to do it.

If you don’t vote, don’t complain!

When I was 18, my bff and I were in the student union at our university and people were registering to vote. She didn’t want to register because she didn’t want to be called for jury duty. I called her a communist. In front of a lot of people, if I recall. She registered. No idea how many times she was called to jury duty, LOL, but I know she votes!
I always vote. I don’t always like the choices and in retrospect, I’m not always sure I chose the right person, but it’s a liberty our forefathers gave their lives for, not to mention our foremothers, who didn’t get to vote until years later. I cannot defile their memories by not exercising my right to speak my piece.

Well said, Julie.

When the president wins an election without having the popular vote, I often wonder does my vote really count? But I always vote.
This will be my daughters first presidential vote, and she is very outspoken about her choice which of course is not the same choice as hubby and I, so we will be watching the debate tonight in separate rooms…but we all will be watching….say a prayer for me ….lol

I forgot to wish Gigi a very Happy Birthday!
Comment
Amen, Julie. I had a friend in high school who was exactly the same way.
Go figure I was called on jury duty TWICE! Once I went (no one picked me, I am TOOOO opinionated!). The second time was a week before we were moving and I could not get a sitter. I would have liked to have been picked, though (not the case they wanted me on, though).

Half of our family goes one way and the other half the other and we all kid and joke with each other- we even put McCain stickers on the backs of the grandkids whose parents are Obama supporters and opposite with the other ones.
I despise listening to the hollyweird crowd try to tell the poor working people who are the backbone of this country, how to vote, while they sit there in the million dollar houses trying to feel our pain.
Sorry.

Thank you for posting this, Leslie. I agree that it’s very important to vote, and this election is particularly important.

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes.
I have been busy with the family today. The kids are out of school for Fall break) and my DH took the week off.
I know lots of people that are getting really upset and worried about the election. All I can say is that I am going to vote (that is the most anyone can do) and hope for the best.
:monkey
Again thank you. You guys are the bestest. :flower4you:

Happy Birthday, Gigi!!!
It’s so funny that this is the subject today because I was just thinking about my oldest son and that I really need to lecture him and make sure he votes this year. I’d love to tell who to vote for :giggle: but I can’t do that. He needs to make his own decision but I feel like you do. This is an important election and his vote counts!
Good news to share. Hubby had a follow-up appt today at Duke and they said everything looks great. They said the MRI is stable and even hinted that their might be some slight regression with the tumor!
They were very, very positive and said to keep doing what he’s doing because it’s obviously working! Also, he’s gone for several weeks now without any seizures and he’s back to working almost full time.
I just wanted to share that good news with all of you! Hope it’s been as great a day for everyone here in the jungle!

It is very interesting that we’ve been talking about this today as I have gotten into a civil email discussion on the election with members of my family today. The key being civil–we can disagree and still love/like each other. Just like here with the monkeys!

Hey everybody…Gigi, I hope that you had a wonderful bday today…sorry I am so late in joining the party…
Well, I am off to read a little before going to bed…ttyl…
I am on the last book in the Twilight series by Meyer and it reads like a romance novel…great YA series,…
Peace and love,

Thanks for posting this!
I take my kids with me to vote in every election. I want to raise voters!
A great thing to do is offer to drive a neighbor or friend to the poll. Make voting a part of a breakfast, lunch or dinner out.

Besides, if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain for the next 4 years!

My daughter is traveling back from college to vote and traveling back (about 4 hours) because she couldn’t find the right place to switch her address in time (monday was our last day). All of their boyfriends present and past get lectured until they give in and vote lol. And Nov. 4th is my husbands’s birthday so we always make a celebration of both!!!!
