Guest Blogger: Tawny Webber!
Leslie Icon

We’re so excited to have Blaze Babe, Tawny Weber, here today in the Jungle! She’s a whole lot of fun, a great writer and she has a fabulous topic. And she gets to blog while I whittle away at that deadline. Thanks, Tawny, so much for joining us today! (And by the way, honey, you are much too gorgeous to EVER need a makeover!)
——————————–
Makeovers Gone Bad

Sigh. I love makeovers. I am such a total girly girl that the idea of being pampered fills me with joy. It doesn’t even have to be the ultra pampering –you know, the laying in a dark, scented room with soft music playing (hmmm, this scenario could play out a number of ways, but I’ll stick with the makeover theme) while someone pampers the skin and massages away all the stress. I’ll take the mini-pampering, sitting on a hard stool in a loud mall while some dude in false eyelashes swipes the newest shade of lipstick over my mouth and declares it ‘ravishing’.

Suffice it to say, if someone waves a makeup brush my way, I’ll sit down and say “go for it.” Which is always a fun little adventure. Except when it’s not. You know those times. The makeovers gone bad. (cue the sound of doom music here).
There was the time I agreed to let a friend do my wedding makeup. She started with black. I kid you not. Black eye shadow. Victorian wedding dress. No match.

Then there was the ‘sick of my hair’ makeover. I ended up half bald. Only the back half though, so at least I didn’t have to see it. Or the hair show I volunteered for, where I went from shoulder length curls to looking like a spiked bowling ball. It might have worked better if I wasn’t a huge whopping 8 months pregnant and looking like a whale already. A whale with a bowling ball head. Not a good look.

One of my favorite makeovers gone bad was the gal doing my sister-in-laws wedding party makeup who made me look like a drag queen on a bad day. I’m still not sure my SIL didn’t pay her extra for that look.

So when my editor suggested a makeover story, I thought of all those bad makeovers and winced. Sure, for me, makeovers are a game. Fun, easy and rarely serious. But, I thought, what if it isn’t that easy for everyone? What when a makeover is a life changing event? One of those “make it or break it” things? So I took a deep breath and jumped all over the idea. And I had a great time. My heroine did too, I think.

No spiked hair or funky looks for Delaney, although it did take her awhile to adjust to the short skirts and gel bra. Makeovers can be fun. They can be pure disaster. They can be empowering or life changing. And in a book? They can be all of that and more. In Delaney’s case, they can be the key to unlock a whole new world. One that includes a very sexy, very intense erotic suspense author. And thanks to the makeover, Delaney had the confidence to take him on.

The results? One very hot bet, and really sexy adventure.

How about you? Are you a makeover fan? Ever had one go wrong? A bad haircut, horrible eye shadow encounter, poodle perm? Share your horror stories with me and I’ll draw one name to share a copy of my latest Blaze, RISQUÉ BUSINESS!

JulieBy all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold over forty books to four publishers featuring strong, confident women. Good morning Tawny!
I love makeovers and one of my favorite shows it What Not to Wear. They tell women that they are worth the time and effort of making themselves look good and they don’t want to hear about diets and body issues. Everyone can look good and they definitely prove it each week.

    Hi Tawny,

When I was in high school I decided to color my what I thought was boring, brown hair. I bought a box of Nice and Easy and got a friend to put it in for me. When she was finished we discovered that the dye had turned my formerly reddish brown hair Ronald McDonald orange! I was mortified, and my parents wouldn’t fork over the money to have it fixed. I lived in shame for about six weeks until it faded and my grandmother put a darker color in to cover it. I learned my lesson though, and now when I color my greys *grins* I go to a salon and have a professional do it!

Hi Tawny  I am so NOT a girly girl. When I was a little girl I’d cry every Sunday morning because I had to wear those horrible sissy socks (the ones with the lace all around the top) and those black patent leather shoes. I much prefered my cowboy boots! :rotfl1:

In high school I tried out and made the majorette squad. I was a junior, had never worn a spot of make-up in my life. The seniors decided I had to have mascara and just a little blush and lip gloss. They cornered me in the bathroom before a pep rally and “fixed me up.” Truly, no one else could probably even see the difference, but I felt like a floozy!

I eventually came around, and agree that it does make me look better, I just don’t like bothering with it. And I’ve never taken the time to have a make-over – with make-up or the hair. It is what it is. But maybe someday……

Have a great day and thanks for visiting with us!!!

Hi, Tawny! I love makeovers, too. I’m “this close” to changing my hair again (cut, not color)…trying to pick out what I want. Something a tad shorter, I think.

I’ve only had one bad makeover…really makeup application. It wasn’t for anything special, so it didn’t matter. But I’m one of those people that Estee Lauder counter calls when they have a makeup professional in because they know I’ll go. I’ve learned the coolest tricks. I love makeup!

Maureen, I love WHAT NOT TO WEAR and I love how they deal with the body as is and still manage to make the women look great. I want to be on that show! Someone nominate me!

Hi Tawny! I like makeovers, but don’t do them very often, except the color of my hair. I’m thinking about changing my hairstyle when I get color at the end of the month. I still don’t wear makeup unless I’m going out with friends, and even then, I don’t always remember. I do love to go to the makeup counter and let them do my makeup.

I love “What Not to Wear” (Julie, nominate me and I’ll nominate you). I would love to do a makeover, so long as it wasn’t too drastic (like going from shoulder length hair to spiky hair makes me cringe) and easily fixable (like a make up makeover sounds fine, done that before). I think I have had the same hair since high school (I did have a two year period when I didn’t after oldest). I am the type of person who finds a shirt and buys one of them in every color. My problem with changing my hair color is that I don’t really have the time to keep it up (usually, they are drastic changes that you have to maintain them). If I could be guaranteed that time regularly, I would probably maintain it.

I also love What Not to Wear and would love to be nominated. LOL The $5,000 wardrobe would be great. :cheer:

As for bad makeovers, I worked as a shampoo girl during high school and had some horid haircuts since I let the stylist try new styles on me. LOL I went from hair that was jet black (naturally), silky and down to my butt, to a pixie cut dyed red that made my natural curls go crazy. Not my best look. :fainting:

Ah, the Poodle Perm disaster. My daughter still calls me Fluffy when she wants to get my goat. :rotfl1: Now I just keep it short and spend maybe 3 minutes finger styling it on the way out the door. About 3 minutes on my makeup and I am done.

As for coloring- can’t be bothered. I have earned everyone of the gray hairs that are starting to show (more silver and white than gray which is good). However, at almost 50 and just starting to go that way, I am in no hurry to color it.

I enjoy What Not to Wear, however, I don’t always thing that what the hosts are wearing lives up to the premise of the show. What’s the sign say? No mini-skirts after 35? And just how old is Stacy? However, I do think they have many good tips and I love to see the hairstyles at the end.

I keep thinking about the makeup makeovers for myself- then realize, I just don’t have the time to maintain something like that. Moisturizer, base, mascara and blush and I am done. Lazy? Probably. But more than that and I don’t look like me!

    :yikes:

I loved the book. I just finished reading it over the weekend.

I love makeovers!!! getting them, and giving them. I worked for Clinique for 8 years as a makeup artist and I still do weddings and proms!! I love it. As for my hair I never had the poodle perm but I did let my mil color my hair once, Hmmm can we all say Howdie Doodie.

I went to get my hair cut and had it completey ruined. This man just keep cutting and cutting, I finally told him to stop. And walked out without paying. I got home and looked in the mirror and bursted into tears. I looked like I had a helmet on my head or that I wanted to look like Billy Ray Cyrus, but a little shorter in the back. It was so awful. I called the place to complain and they told me that he was probably drunk and if I want to come in they would try to fix it. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, they knowingly hire a man that drinks on the job. My God are they crazy. But Thank good it finally grew out and I was able to get it fixed after a couple of months. It is amazing how such a little thing like hair can make you feel so horrible, I didn’t even want to leave the house and when I did I always wore a hat. :ohno:

I remember my first make-over, the make-up was like a retro 80′s look and my dad told me I looke like a slut. Suffice it to say, it took years for me to attempt that again.

I’m such a creature of habit that I only attempt any kind of “make-over” every 3-5 years, LOL. Other than that, it’s the same old hair cut, glasses, make-up, etc! I’ve had the same glasses for 3 years, and I think I’m FINALLY ready for a change! :giggle:

Hi Ms. Weber! Thanks so much for hanging in the canopy with us today.

I can say that I’ve had some very, very scary makeovers through the years. Once in high school I colored my hair and it turned a deep, forest green. I looked like a spruce tree. I’ve had bad perms, bad haircuts, bad makeup advice. Thankfully, I’ve finally found a great stylist who keeps my hair looking great and I know the makeup colors that work for me and the ones that don’t. Basically I’m done with makeovers.

I do however love makeup, and hair stuff and as you said, the girly girl accoutrements. I search the newspaper especially on Sunday for the “Free gift with purchase” ads and any sort of flyer from Ulta.

    Have a great day all,

    Cher :cooldance:

I love makeovers and luckily, I haven’t had any horrible experiences yet! I love to change my hairstyle and try new makeup colors and products – the only thing I don’t change drastically is my hair color although I keep saying someday I’ll go blonde just because I never have

Risque Business is a fantastic book! Loved the makeover theme and I especially loved Nick  After all, who can resist a very sexy, very intense, super HOT hero? Not me! Oh, and not Delaney either *ggg*

A few years ago, I wanted a change… so I decided to cut my hair. First I cut off 12 inches myself. Then I said to myself I need some style. I went to a local salon and asked for my hair to be shoulder length with some layers and do not touch my bangs. She said okay, wet my hair and then she took the first cut….OMG, I was crying and screamin inside my head! She cut right below my ear… how is that shoulder length!?! I was in a state of shock… when she finished I had a short hair cut with my longer bangs in tact. I went to the car and started bawling… get this my grandmother loved it, I was horrified, no one at work noticed for two days, how could you not all of my hair was gone in the back… and it took me six months before I could do anything different with it!!! :boohoo: I have to say that I have not gone back to a salon since!!!

    So- jumping in…

Hi Maureen! I LOVE What Not To Wear. Sadly, if they ever got footage of me, they’d have a heyday on a show like that. Baggy sweats and skull & crossbone tees are my favorite non-writing-event clothes. I do love how they make people look at themselves and realize what clothes/styles will really suit thier bodies. I’m always a little bummed watching it though because the styles are so classic – very little funky fun going on. I’d hate to lose my funky fun :winking:

ooooh, Cheryl, not the orange hair. I had green once (and not on purpose) Its not fun, is it? Brava to you for learning your lesson, I never did LOL. I just see hair and think “oooooh, toy” I will admit, I see my hairdresser for most of my hair changes now, though. Not so much because I’m afraid of what I’d do to it myself, but because that hour of sitting in a chair with no demands is pure heaven.

Tammy… Shrinkage sucks, doesn’t it? I mean, in bangs, of course :angel7:

Hi Alannah  You know, I think makeup is the kind of thing that has to suit each person and their personality. Some people rock the no make up look, others do the minimal clean look and its perfect for them. Then there are the “yes I’m wearing pink and black eyeshadow today, is that a problem” gals who really pull it off because it simply suits them. It’d be like wearing a mini skirt. If its comfy, it looks great. If its embarrassing or makes you feel uncomfortable, that comes across and everyone can tell. So no makeup and cowboy boots sound like they give you confidence and comfort… which are what really counts, right?

Julie – thank you all so much for having me in the Jungle!! I’m still blushing over Leslie’s comments, you all are so sweet. and YAY to find another makeover junkie. Have you ever tried those computer programs where you scan a picture of your face and can put all kinds of hair styles on to see how they’d look? I keep resorting to that when I start getting the urge to chop my hair off again.

I was so thrilled when my daughter followed family tradition and went to beauty school last spring. She has no interest in doing hair but did get her esthiticians licence because she wants to specialize in makeup. So now I’ve got my own makeup artist on call! LOVE IT.

Hmmm, I wonder if we could get What Not To Wear to do a romance segement? Readers, Authors, some confrence type thingy… the possibilities are endless. Of course, I’d love to be on but just don’t want anyone seeing my baggy sweatpants look in that scary three way mirror!!

Katie, I so hear you on the upkeep. My solution is to just keep my natural color (that red in the picture) but I get black lowlights and for awhile had light blonde highlights to keep it fun. I had the blonde taken out and now its way too conservative so I’ll be fixing that when I change the bang issue too

LOL Ev on the poodle perm disaster. It sounds like you’ve got your look down now, though. 3 minutes? I envy you. and you know, I never do all the tricks they do in makeup makeovers. Hi Tawny, Welcome to the Jungle. Thanks for visiting with us today.
I’m a Blaze reader but have yet to read this one. Sounds great. Love the name Delaney, it is my only granddaughters name. Her brother’s name is Nick!!

I love watching makeovers! Oprah has some great ones on her show. Sometimes they even do a guy which is interesting. One man had really long gray hair, they cut it, dressed him up & he was a silver fox!! It was amazing. Years ago I gave up wearing makeup so I had time to get in a walk before work. As I have aged the make up just didn’t seem that important. In the past I loved make up and learning new ways to wear it that looked best on me. For a short time I sold Mary Kay, great products. I have always been in to skin care and love bath/shower products. My hair is very short which makes it easy to care for. I call it wash & go. My hair has been various versions of short for more years than I care to think about.

Reading about make over disasters here made me laugh! Sorry to all of you that had a disaster. Cher, your green hair really made me laugh out loud!! Sorry, couldn’t help myself!! :grin1:

Fun subject Tawny, thanks for the entertainment. I’ll be looking forward to reading your book.

I have always been what some would consider adventurous with my look. I like changing my hair color and style, and I love the punk look. My worst look- well when my husband left for basic training my hair was long and mostly purple. We had also just discovered that I was pregnant about 2 weeks before he left. My big plan was to have my hair done before he came home which was also when my family decided to hold my baby shower- since we would be moving away. So… my hair ended up about neck length and mostly yellowish in color. The stylist was trying to tame the purple and stripped it of color entirely. I was crushed. All I could do was use little clips to make it fun and hope my husband liked yellow. It was terrible but my man was nice about it. I hate seeing the pictures of my shower though :sosad:

Nowadays I scour each new place for a salon that I love- which means yucky cuts until I find the right place. I have been lucky here in Tucson because I have had the same stylist for 3 years. She rocks and we always have fun doing the hair makeover!

Well my make-over gone back was about 3 years after my youngest daughter was born, I needed a new hair style and color. I went to my stylist and said I want something in the auburn color and just a new style. Well when I got done I looked like a Farrah Faucet Carrot Top – - it was so orange, I couldn’t believe my eyes. All my stylist said was give it a little time it will tone down. Well I left there, and after about 10 looks from people I had no idea who they were, I went straight back there and told her to give me my brown hair back. Her comment to me was – “your hair really took to the orange didn’t it?” Needless to say, I didn’t say what I was thinking, I smiled and kept my mouth shut. What really makes it worse is the next day I hear my two girls playing beauty shop and my youngest says don’t make my hair orange like mommies was yesterday. It’s funny now – - but sure wasn’t back then.

Hi, Tawny!! Great to see you here, too! I’m not very girly, but I’ve had a couple big changes before. Nothing that has to do with cosmetics seems to take–maybe because I’m so incredibly lazy that I can’t seem to stick to using the cool products! My very first experience with makeup was in eighth grade, when my classmates helped me get ready for our graduation pictures–it was when using black liner on your lower inner lid was all the rage. I was so pleased then, but in retrospect, yikes!

Since then I’ve mostly stuck to big changes to hair–my “routine” is to grow it out as long as I can stand it, and then cut it short (usually every few years). I haven’t done it “boy” short yet, but close. The good thing is that even if I don’t like it, it always grows back ;)

    Hi Tawny,
Boy this is a great subject I bet everyone has experienced :rotfl1:

The biggest makeover mistake I ever remember was about 24 years ago, I had only been married for a few months, I got a perm (remember this was the middle 80′s) and my new hubby back then said I looked like Shirley Temple. I cried, I pulled my curls and overconditioned just to get those curls to settle down. I am still married to the same man years later. :thatsfunny:

Hi Donna ;-) Isn’t it cool to watch guys get makeovers, too? I always wonder if they have the same psychological effect as they do for women.
I hope the idea of a heroine and hero with your grandkids names isn’t a deterent to reading, although I have to admit, I’d totally understand if it was. A friend of mine writes for a much less steamy line (Medicals) and named her characters the same as my husband and daughter. I couldn’t read it. No way, nuh uhn. :onfire:

Ahhhh, Anna! I’d have been upset about yellow hair too. Julie asked me where MY makeover pictures were for this blog and I had to laugh. I keep very few horrible pictures of myself (ie: I keep very few pictures at all) but I was sure I had the shaved head one somewhere. I just couldn’t find it :-( Isn’t it great to find a good stylist you can count on? I hope you get to stay in one place and keep yours for awhile.

    Hi Tawny,

Makeovers, OK I did Glamor Shots when I was 22 & they turned out awesome! Other than that no. Too worried about the horror stories that happen.

Now a good Swedish massage from the spa, YES! I went b/c I had purchased one for my hubby as he has a physical job bent over wrestling horses all day, a farrier, I thought he would enjoy it. Well expiration date comes up & I had spent a small fortune, wasn’t going to waste it, so I went. A Mack truck could of run over me & I wouldn’t of cared after that experience. I will take one for Valentine’s Day, birthday, anniversary, Mother’s Day, Christmas, & any other day of the year.

    Thank you,
    Susan B.

Susan, How scary :flamer: You could have gotten burned really bad. Did you ever forgive your cousin?

Fedora, hey you!!! I’ll bet your mom loooved your school picture, huh? LOL. My mom and I ended up making a deal. I looked however the mood struck me on a day to day basis, but for pictures and formal events, I’d be a little less, um, out there. I love your hair tradition though :giggle: grow, cut, grow cut.

Gigi, I’m no picturing Shirley Temple and thinking how cute that must have been. Probably not quite the hot date look, but still cute! I’ve had the way too cute looks, or the “hey you look just like XYZ looks” before that made me go home and immediately grab scissors, cleanser or something to change it.

Hi Estella  How are you doing!!! How cool to see you here, and thank you so much.

Susan, I always used to want to do Glamor Shots! I never did, probably because my parents own a modeling agency and and the photographers there were always so, um, uncomplimentary of it. But it was like cotton candy fun in my mind LOL.

I sooooo love a massage. I haven’t had one in years and years, but I recall how deliciously relaxing it was. I hope you get them regularly now?

My poodle perm turned out with my hair looking much better than our poodle; better in the sense of more curls, much more.
Yikes, I still have a picture and can’t imagine why I accepted that perm.

They weren’t all bad, Tawny! Just most unusual, new to me and the world! I’m talking
about the hair styles I’ve had over the years of my life. Yes, I did have a poodle perm!
It was the first one done by the shop and stylist I was using then. Then there was the
pineapple cut, the Afro perm (which one of our priests also got, we had the same stylist),
the spiral curls. Name it, I’ve probably had the cut or perm!!

Oh I don’t feel so bad now- the perm was bad, however, I did cut my below the butt hair off way back when and it has progressively gotten shorter to where it is now. Except the time (early 80′s) when I was, uh, partying too much and ended up out with some theather friends, and woke up with almost no hair. Dyed rainbow colors.

I was still in college. I loved it. Talk about wash and wear! :rotfl1: :rotfl1:

Now I may just towel and finger dry it, or throw some gel in it and finger style it. Soooo much better than when I used to sit on it and it took hours to dry. Then it was long and straigh, now it has body which is so much nicer.

As for the eyeliner– :monkee2:. I usually poke myself. I am dangerous enough with the mascara wand.

Then there is my daughter, who currently has short, spiked hair. I think it is still purple. this week. and the eye makeup is definately very futuristic when she does put it on. :cooldance:

    Hi Tawny!
You’re a lot braver than I am! Or, more successful? I’ve tried to get a makeover a number of times, but have always… failed! Considering all the horror stories I’ve heard from friends and family, however, this might be a good thing.
It’s also giving me something to think about – as I’m going to donate my hair in the next month or so, and I’d say chopping off about 20″ of hair is a big change – probably up to “makeover” level. I once had a HORRIBLE haircut while overseas. Just thinking about it is upsetting, and it’s been a number of years. The stylist wouldn’t believe I’d never had a perm or dyed my hair – and I think I’d know, thankyouverymuch. I told them I wanted to leave my hair a certain length – pretty much everything I wanted, and they didn’t listen.
They had to break out the straight iron to try to trick me about my hair – and talked about me over my head, thinking I couldn’t understand them… and I ended up with a horrible messy mullet and just a mess. Ugh. And it was a really expensive cut too! Grr. I’m still traumatized. I was actually thankful I was out of the country for another month so I wouldn’t have to face any of my friends looking the way I did.

Oh my, Robyn. I’m picturing lots and lots of curls now.

Hi Pat :winking: I loooved spiral perms. I never got one, because I just have too much hair and any perm made me look like Robyn just described LOL – but I always thought they were stunning. I’m going to have to google a pineapple cut – I dont’ know what that is and am totally facscinated.

Hi there, Deborah  YAY that you haven’t had the makeover gone bad yet ;-) And thanks for the words on Risque Business -now *I* can’t wait to hear what you think!

oh Ev :-) thats SO much hair to cut. But it sounds like you’ve nailed your perfect style now. I’m giggling over the party look, though. :giggle: My youngest daughter wants pink hair. She’s only 9 though and her father is having a fit. He comes from a long line of natural haired women, so I think he’s stil having shock over my refusal to leave mine alone. Then there was the time he gave in and let our oldest do the temporary black hair. Only it wasn’t so temporary. She looked like a goth snow white for a year.

Hi, Tawny, fellow Northern CA resident. :) I’m not big on makeovers since I’m pretty low-maintenance. I usually have my hair in a ponytail and rarely wear makeup. But I did experience a disastrous haircut the summer before eighth grade. A relative, who cut hair professionally, cut my hair sooo short that I looked like a boy. I don’t have the kind of face that can rock very short hair, so as you can imagine, I was devastated when I saw what she did to my hair. I’m still not sure why she thought I wanted my hair that short. I didn’t cry in front of her, but I did when I got home. After that, I was paranoid about letting other people cut my hair and cut my own hair for a while.

Hey Limecello! Oh MAN!!! Your haircut sounds horrid. I hate it when people don’t listen. I’ve had a few of those. Even worse are the ones who pat you on the shoulder and explain that they know much better than you do what you should have.

And WOW you — how wonderful that you’re donating your hair. Thats such a lovely gesture!

Hey Diana — great weather lately, huh? You know, its haircuts like the one you had that sent me to beauty school to learn how to cut my own hair! Like you, my face doesn’t do short hair well. I just look like, well, a bowling ball. Not fun

Hi Margie :winking: Thanks so much for coming by! I hope you get to have fun with a makeover soon. And thanks tons on reading Risque Business – I hope you’ll let me know what you think

Hi Tawny, this is such a fun topic. I’m not one who where makeup except for on special occasions, but I am more than willing to let other people give me a ‘makeover’. Usually it’s not so bad and, since it has always been a friend or family member, they do the hair and makeup for whatever it is I’m doing – a dance or a party or whatever.

Unfortunately, the worst makeover I ever had done was by a friend of mine who actually worked at a makeup counter at a department store. She talked me into letting her do my makeup for a dance we were going to go to. She went way over the top and seemed to use a trowel to put a layer of foundation on – a layer that happened to be a few shades too dark for my extremely pale skin. It was an absolutely horrid look. One I didn’t really have a chance to fix since I was already running late to the dance. The only saving grace was that nobody saw me in anything that could be described as good lighting since it was dark by the time I arrived, dark at the dance, and dark when I left. Needless to say, I never let that friend convince me to let her give me another ‘makeover’.

:ohno: Oh man, talk about a bad experience, Karin. D’ya think its harder to take a bad makeover (or ruined hair) in the case of it being a friend doing the dirty work than someone you pay? I’d have to wonder.

Oh, I definitely think it’s harder when it’s a friend more than someone you pay. I mean, if my friend hadn’t planned on showing up at the dance when she was done working, I would’ve found a way to get another friend to help me scrub it all off in the bathroom at the dance. And I never could tell my friend the reason why I begged off of the other ‘makeovers’ she offered.

I also have two friends who stopped talking to each other after one gave the other a hair cut and dye job she wasn’t satisfied with and wanted the first to do again. The problem was that the friend doing the hair hadn’t made the one getting her hair done pay for it, even though it was done at the salon where the first girl worked at, using their dye.
