That Time of the Year
Janelle Icon

Yes, it’s that time of the year, where Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays are devoted to FOOTBALL for the next four months. UGH. I know some women are really into football, sometimes just as much as their husbands or significant others are, but not me. I don’t like football. I don’t get football, and I don’t want to learn. I don’t know who the teams are, and what guys play on what teams. And I certainly don’t want to have to watch it for three days in a row.

So for the next four months, chances are I’m going to become a football widow on the weekends and Monday nights. Even as I write this (Sunday afternoon), the husband is watching some football game on TV. College or pro, I haven’t a clue. Football is football, no matter who is playing. I guess I can’t complain too much, considering this gives me hours of uninterrupted reading or writing time of my very own while my husband is glued to the TV.

So, what about you? Do you enjoy watching football, or hate it? Do you have a favorite team you root for or are you a football widow like me? If you’re a football widow, how do you spend that extra “alone” time?

Janelle

JanelleJanelle Denison finds it hard to believe that it’s been nearly 25 years since she first started writing romance novels. At first, it was a way to pass idle time while her husband worked swing shift, but before long it became an obsession to get published. Luckily, she kept at it (it took her over 5 years to get that first book published!) and is now a Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, and USA Today Bestselling author! Now, after selling over 45 plus novels, she finds that her Plotmonkey pals help to keep her stories fresh and unique, and she can’t imagine writing a story without their input. Janelle lives in Oregon with her husband, Don, along with two teenage daughters that keep life interesting.

I much prefer to see the games in person vs. on t.v., so no, I don’t really follow any team. I don’t watch much t.v. at all. I use for reading and internet time. And naps LOL.

Usually only watch the Superbowl, especially if I am in a pool.

I READ or watch other t.v. instead. :ohno: :thatsfunny:

    Janelle,

I also prefer to watch the games in person. I loooooove football and hockey, but I prefer to watch college football. I don’t watch as much anymore because I spend time with my kids and writing.

BTW, I hate to do this to you, but football is on Thursday nights as well at some point during the season.

Besides the SuperBowl, the only mandatory game we watch is The Army/Navy Game. Occassionally, especially when winter gets here, hubby will sit and watch, but he usually reads while they are on. Or naps.

I used game time yesterday to organize my office and actually, gasp!!, cook dinner. :rotfl1:

Didn’t get a chance to pick a book up since Friday when I finished the one I was reading.

Did anyone watch True Blood last night?? I was a little disappointed to find that they started the stories after Katrina, which has a big part of the current story line. I hope they aren’t going to deviate to far from the actual story though. All in all, I liked it though.

I love football, but prefer professional to college. I do watch a few college games during the year. The Tennesses Titans are my team(WooHoo we won yesterday). I think in the 10 years since they moved here, I’ve missed watching one game(I try and go to at least 2-3 games a year). Luckily, I know lots of people with season tickets. I only watch a few of the other games that are played each week. I usually take a nap or read after the Titans games are over. I think the Thursday night games start either the Thursday before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving night, but I’m not really sure.

I did watch True Blood last night and thought it was good. I’ve never read any of the books, so this is my first taste of the series.

In my house there are four seasons – Winter, Spring, Summer and Football. :snoopy: I’ve been a football junkie since I was about 5 years old. I follow college ball (GO NOLES!) and the NFL. That big screen TV in the living room that everyone assumed I bought for the dh? He bought it for me so I could be “up close and personal” to the weekend games.

I enjoy football. I always watch our hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles. I don’t always watch the other teams but I will and don’t mind it. I am not a fan of baseball. It is too slow moving for me. I find it boring.

Janelle..I am with you. I can totally understand following a favorite team and watching them all season long, but watching football for football’s sake escapes me. I am sure it is fun…it just doesn’t interest me. We’ll have to do Powell’s instead!

I was born and raised in a state where little girls get cheerleader outfits to come home from the hospital and baby boys get jerseys. College football reigns supreme here. I understand the game. I’m aware of the teams. The state college games are for reading or napping. I don’t watch pro except for the Super Bowl and that’s for the ads. My sport is baseball (Go, Cardinals – though they’re WAY out of the pennant race) and fastpitch (even though Team USA bluw the gold medal game. :boohoo: )

Ev, I saw “True Blood” last night. The jury’s still out….

    Have a great week, ya’ll!

I’m a football widow! The day before the Patriots first game this weekend, hubby went to the basement with a huge smile on his face – like a kid – “I’m going to watch the Tennis on the big screen and make sure everythings’ working for the Patriots tomorrow!”. Oh Joy. :boohoo:

I find things to do … but honestly when he’s home and its not football season, he’s channel surfing anyway, only difference is he isn’t in the basement, he’s hanging with me! Which I like so much better.

I used to be an avid watcher of our Sooners, but once one of my favorite quarterbacks left the team, I stopped watching and caring. I don’t follow any of it in the least anymore. And when bf is home, of course he has the tv monopolized by some game or the other going on. He gets in a tiff when I leave the room, so usually I’ll just grab a book and tune it out

My hubbie is the football widow in our house. I like PJ have four seasons, Superbowl (i.e. Winter), Draft (i.e Spring), Training Camp (i.e Summer) and Reg. Season (i.e. Fall). I come from a football family and we have our conference covered, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants and Redskins. Of course, this means that my hubbie never gets to use the big screen t.v. LOL

BTW Carly send your hubbie my sympathies on Tom Brady. Tough break.

I can’t stand it. I avoid the living room like the plague. Hubby & 7 year old college more specifically, UGA Bulldogs, ugh. If we are out and about he has a plug from the radio stuck in his ear.

    Thank you,

I was so bummed to see Tom Brady was injured yesterday. And watching football on TV is great – because then you know, you get to snack!

We do go to the Friday night High school football games. My oldest daughter was in the band so 4 years went by seeing her do that. Now my youngest daughter is in the Mass Media (the TV part of the school) she helps film the games so we go to keep an eye on her.

I do watch the Super Bowl but 99%for the commercials. :monkey

Hubby is only off every 3rd weekend so that seriously limits the amount of time he has to watch. Also, we’re huge NASCAR fans and most of the races are on on Sundays (although more and more are being run on Sat. night) but for the most part we’re watching the race or nothing.

I like football, and don’t mind if it’s on, but that’s probably because it isn’t on all the time.

I love football! I really only watch the 49′ers. Don’t care to much about the other teams until it is closer to the end of the season and then I start becoming aware of who is in the play offs. the 9′er’s did not do well yesterday despite moments of good playing. Hopefully that will improve as the season goes along. It has been way to long since they had a good year. Oh for the days of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Brent Jones, Harris Barton, BY and the rest of the glory teams! The only other sport I watch is figure skating, I’m a long time fan. Also like the Olympics but watch spasmodically!!
Janelle & other football widow, enjoy the time he is in front of the TV to do something you like. I got hooked on football because my dad was a fan!

I prefer other sports to football (hockey, volleyball, lacrosse) but I don’t mind watching it. It’s not on often at my house because it raises my dad’s blood pressure, so I usually only watch it when my brother or friends have football parties, which they do for both the NFL and for college games, depending on who’s playing.

I am the sports fan. I LOVE football. I started seriously watching football when Doug Flutie played for Boston College. I love the tight pants and all that muscle. Have you ever seen so many fine physical specimens on the TV screen at one time?.Oh my Janelle, what is not to like watching all those tight butts in a huddle. Get a load of those fabulous thighs. Look at those biceps. Oh my I’m getting carried away yet again.
The difference here is that while men seem to hit the frig during 1/2 time well some women, ahem, have to find ways to lower the body heat.

I love football. I went to a HUGE football school for undergrad, so that helped. I think my experiences with football also helped. Rather than sitting with a guy who just stared dumbly at the tv for 2-4 hours, we always had parties. Bar-b-q’s, potlucks, just a giant group of people eating, chatting, having fun and rooting for our team.
It was also great -after a game [and win] – to walk around and feel the camaraderie all around.
