Voo Doo Donuts
Janelle Icon

Well, my mom has been here in Oregon visiting for the past week. We’ve done some things around the house, but mostly we’ve just hung out together (along with my daughters), shopped, caught a few movies we wanted to see, and have done a bit of sight-seeing since I’m so new to the area. Recently, a girlfriend was watching the travel channel on TV and caught a segment on the best donut places in the U.S., and they featured a place in Portland called “Voo Doo Doughnuts”. She insisted that it was a place I had to visit, and so me, my mother, and my girls headed downtown to see what the fuss was all about.

Well, the donut shop wasn’t quite what we expected — actually, we didn’t know WHAT to expect, LOL, but the establishment was small, dark, and very eclectic in decor. But it also had a very fun vibe to it, too. Mostly, Voo Doo Doughnuts are know for their unique types and flavors of donuts, and I have to admit that there were quite a few I’ve never heard of, or seen before. And, of course, they had a Voo Doo Doll Donut, which is frosted in chocolate with creme filling and a pretzel “pin” stuck into it so you can pretend that the donut doll is your worst enemy and stab away at it while eating it, too. Very cute! Here are some of the types and flavors they had when we stopped by:

Grape Ape (raised doughnut with vanilla frosting and grape “Pixie Stick” type of powder sprinkled on top)

Dirt (raised doughnut covered with vanilla glaze and oreo cookies)

Butter Fingering (Devils food, vanilla frosting, and crushed Butterfinger)

Neapolitan (chocolate doughnut with vanilla frosting and strawberry quick powder)

Triple Chocolate Penetration (chocolate doughnut, chocolate glaze, and cocoa-puffs)

Dirty Snowball (chocolate cake doughnut covered with pink marshmallow glaze and surprise filling)

Apple Fritter (apple/glaze/doughnut as big as your head — No kidding, this thing was HUGE!)

The Memphis Mafia (chocolate chips/banana/ peanutbutter/glaze — also very big!)

Portland Creme (raised doughnut filled with creme and covered in chocolate with two eyes)

Bacon Maple Bar (raised doughnut with maple frosting and topped off with bacon — actually this was VERY good!)

VEGAN (thats right, vegan doughnuts! Amazing!)

They also had the typical sprinkle donuts, crullers, buttermilk, and chocolate bars. Overall, it was fun to taste some of these untraditional type donuts, and it’s a place I’m sure I’ll visit again to try something new.

And just for fun, you can find out what type of Donut you are! Here’s what I am:

You Are a Boston Creme Donut

You have a tough exterior. No one wants to mess with you.
But on the inside, you’re a total pushover and completely soft.
You’re a traditionalist, and you don’t change easily.
You’re likely to eat the same doughnut every morning, and pout if it’s sold out.

So, what is your favorite donut place? Dunkin Donuts? Krispy Kreme? A place like Voo Doo Doughnuts? And what is your favorite KIND of donut? Mine is a chocolate French Cruller

Huh. I’m also a Boston Creme.

There’s this hole-in-the-wall donut place called Spunky Dunkers who makes these melt-in-your-mouth toasted coconut donuts that are to die for. I could eat 6 in one sitting, they are soooo good. It’s the only donut I’ve had there and the only one I want. Love them.

Voo Doo Donuts sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe one day I’ll get to try them.

I am also a Boston Cream. Go figure.

Beside Dunkin Donuts (the one Krispy Kreme we had only lasted less than 2 years), there is a local Italian Bakery down the road who we frequent. A lot.

I have seen the Voo-doo donut program. It’s always fun to watch that stuff! Makes me want to jump in my car and drive cross country to find all these places.

Well I’m a Boston Creme also, maybe we should make a club. :happy2:

My favorite kind of donut is sprinkles. I love the colors, :hide: , I can be such a little kid in the donut shop. Usually after my sprinkled one, I get either a raspberry or lemon filled. I also like the cream filled. Who am I kidding, as long as it doesn’t have coconut I have never met a donut I didn’t like. :hissyfit: This could be why I have to go to the gym four days a week now.

    You Are a Glazed Donut

Okay, you know that you’re plain – and you’re cool with that.
You prefer not to let anything distract from your sweetness.
Your appeal is understated yet universal. Everyone dig you.
And in a pinch, you’ll probably get eaten.

    What Donut Are You?

I love plain Krispy Kreme donuts especially when the hot light is on! I always ate chocolate on my donuts growing up. My Pawpaw would always pick up donuts for breakfast every Sunday before church. I still will pick up donuts at the local grocery bakery when I’m home for a visit.

Krispy Kreme…no contest! Though I do like a good indie when you can find them.

My favorite donut is the Krispy Kreme lemon filled. If I’m at Dunkin’ Donuts, it’s the chocolate donut holes or a chocolate glazed donut.

Janelle, this Voodoo place looks like somewhere I’d want to go for sure!

*joins the Boston Creme Club* Weird. And I should drink a full cup o coffee before reading the Monkeys. I got to “Chocolate Penetration” and had a :wtf: moment! 8O My mind went all sorts of places it shouldn’t have! *pulls brain back from the brink*

I wish I could do donuts but I’ve been on a strict diet for 5 months and have lost 17 pounds with at least 20 more to go. When I break it, I go for my absolute empty calorie nemesis – a Sonic M&M Blast(tm). However, if I ever get to Portland, I’ll definitely track down VooDoo Donuts. I HAVE to try that bacon maple bar!

Janelle, just finished “Wild for Him” about two this morning. I couldn’t put it down!

I am a caramel cruch donut (I couldn’t get it to post). Basically, I sit around pondering the meaning of life (not).

I love anything with chocolate on it…my favorite is an old fashioned with chocolate….as for Voodoo donuts…I have heard of them, too….they sound a little scary to me.

I haven’t eaten a donut in 20 years okay. Are you kidding? If I ate a donut today I’d be wearing it tomorrow!!
So no donuts for me. However, if I could I’d go for the French Cruller too although I’d take mine plain with a cup of hot tea. Mmmm, good! :giggle:

Hi Janelle I hope you are enjoying the great Northwest there is so much to do I grew up in Scappoose which is 3o min west of Portland on highway 30 or from Hillsboro we would take Cornelius pass. Havce you been to the Oregon coast yet? so my senior year in high school on the weekends I actually worked at a donut shop so for a long time I didn’t like donuts. I like Krispy Kreme I like the creme filled. we don’t have a krispy kreme close to us so we do dunkin donuts and I like the powder sugar kreme filled.

I love Krispy Kreme, but they didn’t do very well in my town. However, there’s this place by my job called Lamar’s that has really good hot chocolate. BTW, I took the quiz and I’m a Glaze Donut. Which is so true because that’s my fav kind! That Voo Doo Donut place sounds awesome. I sense a story there.

I don’t really have a favorite donut place because there isn’t really one that’s all that close to me. I’m going to have to do a little research and find one. My favorite type is definitely an apple fritter. I haven’t had one in a while and my mom likes to rub in the fact that she occasionally picks one up at Starbucks on Saturdays on her way to work.

Julie — I definitely thought of you while visiting Voo Doo Donuts! It’s a place you and Leslie would love. Carly, not so much :rotfl1:

Wow, lots of Boston Cremers out there!

Silver — I agree that the Triple Chocolate Penetration does make the mind go to places it shouldn’t. :giggle: Good for you for losing that weight! And I’m so happy that you enjoyed WILD FOR HIM! You made my day! :thankyou:

Michele — We haven’t been to the Oregon Coast yet, but as soon as we get more unpacked and settled in this house, and our weekends are freed up, we’re definitely planning a trip! I heard it’s lovely/gorgeous on the coast!

Katie — The movie Jane Austen Book Club is so great. Even my teenage girls loved it. I’m glad you and your mom did, too!

I’ve heard about this place also. Years ago when my daughter & son-in-law lived in the Portland area there was a great place called Coffee People. I don’t know if they are still around but if so check out their Espresso Milkshakes (anyway I think that is what it was, it was some kind of coffee milkshake). It came in a big mug that you keep & I still have the mug. The date on it is 1994!!!!

I hope you are enjoying getting acquainted in Oregon, it is a really wonderful state. Portland is one of the nicest big cities in my humble opinion. Could I be biased??!! My daughter & her family are now living in Eugene.

I really don’t eat donuts as they give me heartburn but I can eat maple bars & they don’t!! I came out same as you Boston Creme Donut!! If I ate donuts it would be a custard filled one, real custard none of this pretend stuff!!!

P.S. After reading all the comments, there is a lot of us Boston Cremer’s out there!

Janelle, the Oregon coast is beautiful & I am biased about that. There are some really beautiful wonderful places all along the coast, Otter Rock is wonderful as is Bandon (further south) and Gold Beach. September is probably good weather & fewer tourists. My daughter & her family go to Florence from Eugene.

Okay, I’ll stop boring everyone!!!

Krispy Kreme donuts are my biggest weakness in life. I actually had an aunt e-mail me a picture of the hot light one time, that’s how bad my reputation for putting a hurtin’ on a box of Krispy Kremes is.

The convenient store where I stop to get gas has a KK display on the right side of the store and I actually have to go in the left door in order to not get them every time – buy 2 get one free! Now, who could resist that. It’s a sale, right?

I either get the glazed or the cinammon ones and I’m actually a “glazed donut” myself. How fitting!

Janelle when you do get settled make a trip to the coast living in Scappoose we spent a lot of time at Cannon Beach (parts of the Goonies filmed there the big rock in the movie is called haystack rock) Seaside has great little shops and Tillamook it’s a must to stop at the cheese factory for Ice creme Rainer a town outside of seaside is where the rest of the Goonies was filmed and Kindergarten Cop. just a little trivial info.

Enjoyed hearing about these diff types of donuts. Who knew there were so many diff kinds.

My fav is the reg jelly donut or jelly stick – there is usually more jelly in the stick. LOL. I love a j.d. LOADED with jelly; nothing worse than biting into a j.d. and there is hardly any in there.

And I took the test and even tho the questions didnt fit me, I came out as a jelly donut. How appropriate?

It must have the been the power of suggestion as last nite I felt like something sweet and donuts popped into my head. I had forgotten about this post – it must have seeped into my consciousness.

Dunkin Donuts used to have (20 yrs ago) a strawberry glazed donut that was really really good! Then they changed the icing to some artificial strawberry flavored icing and they are awful.

My favorite are the strawberry/raspberry jelly filled donuts covered with powdered sugar! Yummy!
