Live from ….
Carly Icon

Guess where I am?

You got it.

Live from THE APPLE LINE WAITING TO GET THE NEW IPHONE. What’s that you ask? Didn’t I say I’d never do this again after spending 5 + hours on the same line last year?

Technically it’s different. Last year I waited on opening day only to find those who went on day 2 walked in and out with a brand new phone after five minutes. This year I swore I’d be one of the smart people, so I waited until day 2 only to find there was still a three hour line. So now it’s day 3. The line is two hours.

Why the difference this year? Instead of buying a phone, going home and activating, Apple and AT&T have decided you must activate in the store or you can’t buy a phone. SIGH! And guess what happened? from the start of the launch? Problems, problems and more problems, as first Apple’s network didn’t work on day 1, and then AT&T problems with some people’s activation slowed things afterwards. We will see what happens when I get inside.

In case you’re wondering WHY I caved in and am waiting on line, the reason is this: I had to be in the mall anyway. I met a friend fir lunch and now I have 2 hours to kill before an appointment next door. I asked before getting on line how long they anticipated it would take, and they said approximately two hours. Will I make it to my appointment across the mall? Can’t promise, but should be OK. So here I am.

But I will tell you one thing: If I have to leave this line to make it to my appointment before I get this phone, after waiting 2 hours I will not be a happy camper!

One hour to go … Stay tuned!

Oh! Did I mention I typed this whole thing on the notepad of my old iPhone????

End Result: I got my iPhone. I missed my #$@% appointment by 15 minutes. But I have my little gadget in hand as I fly off to Miami/South Beach for three days. No kids. Just husband and another couple. I NEED A VACATION. Translated: I need to write and this is when I get the most done!

So … did any of you wait in line this year? Last year? WOULD anyone be as crazy as me for a gadget?

HAVE A GOOD WEEK and miss me while I’m gone!!!!!!!

PS – Thank you, Cher, for being our intrepid reporter from RWA!

I can honestly say that to my memory, I’ve never waited in line to buy ANYTHING except the Harry Potter books, and I even stopped doing that for the last two by purchasing them from a private bookseller who had a party in his home and gave out the books while we drank fake butterbeer and played Harry Potter SCENE IT on the tv!

I’m not much of a gadget girl, though as Carly knows, I’m getting sucked into the idea of the Kindle. I’m waiting for RWA, hoping to see a few in person. Anyone have one? Like, love, hate?

Carly hated hers and sold it. Julie Kenner wrote an article for a newsletter about how much she loved hers. (Did you know her new Demon book is out? It was amazing! Finished it last night!) I’m still pondering.

    Carly!
I have an iphone, got it two months ago and I LURRRRVVVV it! I took it to Hawaii with me and didn’t even have to have a map. The map on the iPhone worked beautifully! My truck broke down while the dh was out of town and I was able to go onto the internet smartpages.com, look up a wrecker, call him and take care of the truck all from my iPhone. It is way toooooo cool!

When I got to work Friday morning the line at the AT&T store next to mine stretched down the hall. Since we open an hour before all the other stores in the mall, customers who come in for their coffee couldn’t figure out what was going on at Border’s to have such a line! They were in shock that anyone would wait in line for a phone.

On top of that, they ran out by hour 2. And weren’t getting more until Monday.

Since I have Verizon, I don’t need to worry about wanting an iPhone. I have my iPod touch anyway. And am waiting for my paychecks to kick in to get the new Samsung Touch. But I won’t wait in line.

Julie- I have to get the new Kenner book yet, so NO spoilers, please.

There’s a hot thread running on SmartB!thces about the Kindle. I am bouncing around the idea in my head also. Hubby loves his Sony ereader and barely puts it down these days.

We are doing Disney for Xmas and taking the sleeper train so I would love to bring my books but not the bulk of them. I keep saying the Kindle because I can dl books when I want to- which is why he doesn’t want me to have one. I understand this, I do.

On another note, we adopted a new resuce this weekend. He’s a 2 year old wire haired daschund from SC, where our other one is also from, although not related. He was one of 3 sent here from a puppy mill, the other two were already adopted. He’s laying under the computer desk at my feet. Gets along well with the other 2 dogs and 2 of the 3 cats. The 3rd cat just doesn’t like change at all- still won’t go near our other doxie.

Anyone know how to teach a really long dog how to walk up and downstairs?? He doesn’t know how and keeps falling down them, so I am guessing Mac never learned how since he was probably caged our outside. I am guessing outside since he likes it and doesn’t even look at the cage we keep all the dog toys in.

What I don’t do for my hubby.

I’m a verizon customer, so no iphone for me. Plus, at&t cells don’t work where my dad lives, so I can’t switch(my whole family is on verizon).

I did get a new ipod over the weekend. I got 160G and it was cheaper than the 30G I bought 3 years ago. I love the new menus and graphics. I sold my old one to my oldest niece since she only had a 1G nano. She hasn’t put it down in 2 days.

Carly, hope you have a blast on your vacation.

You’re welcome, Carly! I’m going to have fun with being a reporter. :giggle: Hope you guys will like what I have planned.

I don’t have an IPhone, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have one but just can’t justify the cost because I’m making such little money with my e-books at the moment. Maybe one day if the planets line up and boogie to celestial music, the stars twinkle in unison, the butterflies all flap their wings to the same beat and I get in print and actually begin to make a few bucks at my writing, then I will get myself an IPhone. In fact, it will probably be one of the first things I buy just for myself.

I hope to see all of you Plotmonkeys while I’m in San Fran. I’ll of course be doing a report about the Literacy Signing so I will at least drop by your table and say hi if I can even see you through the crowd of fans clamoring at your table. Otherwise, I’ll give you all a wave.

BTW, I’m almost finished reading Hot Property and it is sooo good!! No wonder it’s on the NYT list!

Have a terrific and safe trip on your vacation!

    Cher :snoopy:

Ev, I have a doxie and they really can’t learn to go up and down stairs except by necessity. We bought one of those mini-stair things so she could get up on the couch (her favorite sleeping spot) without jumping, but she can’t do it. The stairs are too close together for her to hop and too far apart for her to walk with her short little legs. At my mother’s house, though, she’ll go upstairs if that’s her only way to get to me. So they’ll learn when they need to.

Do try and keep him from jumping. Ours started having back issues at 2. She only jumps onto the couch and my daughter’s bed. She’s good about staying off everything else and not jumping down, but waiting for us to get her down. Of course, with the surgery, she’s having to get herself down. She’s a hefty little puppy (15lbs!) and I still can’t lift her at all.

    Congrats on the new puppy!

Ev, we have a miniature dachshund as well and he has no problem going up and down stairs. We have one of those step things too for him to get on the couch–also his favorite sleeping spot. He learned by necessity as well.

As Julie said, be careful of their back and try to discourage them from jumping although it’s hard. Those little guys have that damn-the-torpedoes stubborness. :giggle:

Pretty much the only thing I’ve ever stood in line for is school registration. I can’t see myself ever standing in line for a phone. While having an iPhone might be pretty cool, I like my phone being simply a phone and don’t really plan on ever getting on that does more than take pictures, which I hardly ever use since I have a great digital camera.

Good luck with your new dog, ev.

I’m so non-geek, I’m almost Amish. I have a real love/hate relationship with the computer even though I need it to write. But, I love my Kindle because it is SO simple and non-techy. I think most of the negative reviews of it are people who are more gadget seeking and want it to have more features like a PDA or a computer. But the whole point is it’s only a book reader, why would you want to carry around a big ass PDA the size of a Kindle??? It sure beats reading a book on the small flickering Palm screen. If you remember it’s just for reading and if you read a lot of books, you’ll love it. Once you figure how to click the cover into place (it’s very tricky until you learn how), it takes care of the other bad reviews of hitting the prev. page button too easily. Only my two cents…

    Leslie,

I just read Sean Murphy’s story and LOVED it! However, I have a question–at what age do you allow your girls to read your books.

I only ask since I noticed the dedication to your lovely daughter.

Thanks for all the great scenes through the years–ALL of you Plotmonkeys.

As much as I love some technology I don’t get why anyone wants to stand in line for something so they can buy it the day it goes on sale!! There just isn’t anything I need that bad! Sorry!! Can’t remember the last time I stood in line, oh yea! A couple of weeks ago I went to see a local production of Miss Saigon & they opened the doors late so there were all these people standing outside the theater. Later we found out that the power had gone out so they were scrambling around inside!! Needless to say they didn’t need a bunch of people coming inside to a completely dark theater. Luckily the problem was quickly solved. The show was great, there was some really wonderful talent performing.
Carly, have fun on your quick get away.

Julie and cher- We have the stairs by our bed and my daughters for our other Doxie (the cats use them too- lazy bums) but this poor boy never learned to negotiate them at all.

However, after I did my post all the dogs came back inside- our girl doxie at the forefront. Max, the new guy, tried and backed off (one of the cats was trying to get out) and then our lab came barreling around the corner, jumped over him and went it. I guess he decided not to be left out, because he just jumped right up and in the house. To be fair the back stairs are really narrow. He was so proud of himself. I praised our :dog1: for teaching him how to do it.

We have stools of various levels by almost all the furniture so that they can all get up. Nothing is off limits. Isis (the girl) goes up a stool, onto the couch, over the end table and onto hubby’s lap, or chair, all the time. You just have to remember not to put anything breakable on the table. Then she reverses her direction. Daughter has pillows all around her bed on the floor in case someone jumps off.

No, we don’t spoil them at all.

We took them both for a bath and haircut today (she got Silver nail pawlish this time) and they both look so pretty. He got a new collar and leash and bowl and bed and toy….

    Nope, not spoiled.

Ev that is funny I thought our dog was just being crazy because he goes across the end table to get to me. We have a long haired Doxie I named him Mickey ( I love Mickey mouse so everything had to be Mickey) we have stools all over for him to because I am afraid he will break his back. I know he does think he isn’t supposed to jump up or down off stuff. :dog1: :dog:

Carly glad you got your phone I have verizon so I will not be able to get that one. I do need a phone that I can text better with, the girls have moved out they are 21, 22 but they want to ask me stuff all the time and that is what they do while I am at work saves on calls but by it makes the fingers really work.
I hope you have a great time on your mini vacation…
