Yes, ladies and gentlemen…the time is nearly here. Three days and counting. At least here in Florida. On January 11, Girl Scout cookies officially go on sale.
I can almost taste the Samoas.
I used to be a Thin Mint girl. I still like them, but over time, I’ve become totally addicted to Samoas. Oh, the dark chocolate…the coconut…the caramel. What’s not to love?
And the best part? I’ll be on my way to California on that first selling day, which means the dh will be accompanying our little scout on her first round of the neighborhood.
Usually, I hate fundraisers. I don’t like imposing on people I know, asking them to buy crap they don’t need just so my daughter’s school isn’t properly funded through taxes and whatnot. I grew up in Catholic school, where fundraising was a 365 days a year endeavor. I’ll never forget all the car washes and bake sales my eighth grade class held so that we could go to Disney World for our class trip…only to have the pastor take our money for the new church fund and send us to Busch Gardens instead. (This may not sound bad in the end…but you have to remember that we all live in Tampa and BG was not a big deal. Disney was a big deal!)
Somehow, however, I don’t mind selling Girl Scout cookies. Not only because this will fund the troupe’s trip to the Kennedy Space Center, but because people WANT Girl Scout cookies. We are not imposing…we are bringing them something they long for, that they cannot get in stores or order off of eBay. Okay, maybe you can order them on eBay, but would you want to? I draw the line at food stuff.
Those of you who are beer drinkers who didn’t live east of the Rockies…do you remember the time when getting a case of Coors beer was a treasure? I distinctly remember my father packing cases upon cases of the stuff to bring home to his friends when we were on our skiing trips. Now that it’s available in stores, it’s no big deal.
I liken Girl Scout cookies to See’s chocolate…if you’re in Florida and not California where they seem to have stores on every street corner (and yes, I mapquested the locations of the nearest ones to our hotel for next week…Hi, my name is Julie and I’m a See’s Chocoholic.) Everyone wants them and they’ll gladly shell out $5 for a box!
So…what’s your favorite Girl Scout cookie? And will you be buying them from your neighborhood Scout? You really should!

By all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold nearly thirty books to three publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her husband, daughter, spoiled dachshund, enormous guinea pig and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

I still go for the thin mints, and I love that you can freeze them. There’s a lady at work whose daughter is still a girl scout, so I”m set.

It’s sad. Girl Scouts barely exist here … but I’m a thin mint girl, myself. LOVE THEM! :heart1:
Comment
I love the thin mints and the shortbread. I know my thin mints are safe from mt mom cause she says mint and chocolate don’t go together. More for me!
Comment
We don’t have any scouts in the neighborhood or any where around me who go door to door, but I always catch them at the local Target or Walmart. I wonder, if living in a small city, more parents go for the you come to us attitude rather then having to go with the kids on the rounds? Safety factor? Unless you google the local sex crimes, you don’t know whose door you are knocking on I suppose.
I love the Samoas myself. I hoard them from everyone else. I also put the thin mints in the freezer so I can enjoy them year round.
And how rude to take your hard earned money for something the adults should have been responsible for raising on their own. That is the lowest.
Comment
I sold them as a kid. I hated selling them or anything else for fund raisers.
Our schools, boy scouts and girl scouts all seem to sell at the same time and I hate constantly begging my friends and family to buy. It’s tough too, because I have 3 kids now all selling age.
Now for eating Girl Scout Cookies–oh yeah! Unfortunately they don’t sell my favorites in this area any more. I loved the sandwich cookies (can’t remember what they were called). My nieces are selling them and I’ll buy from them. They are raising money to go to D.C.
Comment
oh man. i love girlscout cookies. as i read this note, i emailed my friend who’s girls usually sell them. i’m so excited. i’m a samoas girl, and the shortbread one whatever its called. yay!
Comment
I always buy one box of samoas and I don’t let anyone else even have one cookie from that box. However, thin mints are my favorite Girl Scout cookies. I get 2 or 3 boxes and keep them in the freezer. They are so great just right out of the freezer and I eat on them all year. One of my co-worker’s daughter is a scout, so I buy mine the day they go on sale(ours went on sale last week). I also usually buy from at least one of the groups in front of Wal-Mart or at the mall.
Comment
I also used to be a thin mint girl, now I love the coconut-y samoas (or as I like to call them samosas, yes, I know it is a beverage, but it makes me feel a little cooky).
How totally rude to take your money for DW and send you to BG. That’s just not right.
Comment
I love Thin Mints, but the last few years Tag-A-Longs are my favorite. The troops normally camp out in front of my credit union, grocery store, Target etc.
Have fun ladies in California. I hope you get a lot of plotting done, your loyal fans are just waiting for more books.
Comment
my favorite is THIN MINTS!!!! Can’t wait. A coworker’s daughter is still a Girl Scout.

Right now, we’re doing pre-orders…that means going to the door. My daughter goes in our neighborhood only because we pretty much know everyone…as I’ve blogged, at Halloween, everyone is out and parents walk with the kids and it’s a great chance to know your neighbors. That said, she doesn’t go alone. I go with her or my husband or her 17-year-old babysitter. You can never be too careful!
The sales outside of stores & such will begin mid-February. We do that, too. It’s actually pretty fun. Like I said, most people rush toward us and WANT cookies. We don’t have to work too hard!
Has anyone tried the GS Cookie ice creams from Edy’s? We tried one last year (tagalong, I think) and it was okay…but this year, I want me some Samoa!!
Comment
First of all, let me say it’s good to get back to the Plotmonkeys blog and see what’s happening. Hubby and I went on a Caribbean cruise for New Year’s. We got home on Sat. but I’ve been soooooo busy trying to take down all the Christmas stuff and get it put away, I haven’t been to the site since before Christmas. I know, shame on me. By the way, Carly I read SWAK while basking in the sun on the ship, and I must say, it was GREAT.
As for the cookies, I’m a thin mint lover. I have a friend who’s daughter is a scout, so we buy from her, plus hubby buys from someone’s daughter at work, and then we usually get some from those people at the grocery stores in Feb. I also have come to love the Samoas, the coconut, caramel and chocolate together with a cup of hot tea—YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!
Julie, I know exactly what you are saying about those car washes and bake sales. I went 12 years to Catholic school. I can’t tell you how many times when I was younger that my mother baked. There were 5 of us in school, so she did LOTS of baking and worked a full time job. However, our 8th grade triip only took us to Washington D.C. I remember very well, it was the bicentennial year. LMAO how you remember things like that.
I hope everyone is having a good year, since I was sailing on the ship for New Year’s please allow me to wish everyone, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!
Have a good time in California. I hope alot of plotting gets done. Enjoy those chocolates.
Take Care all and Have a Good Day!!!!!!!!!!!

Loooooooove them in this house! I hadn’t even realized it was “that time” until someone knocked on our door Sunday. The little girl and her mother must have thought they’d hit the jackpot because we ordered TEN boxes! lolol! (Of course, college girl was here and she asked so prettily for me to order several boxes & mail them to her in Florida, so of course I did.)
Love the Samoas the best, and I’m glad they’re back to being called Samoas! (That’s what they were when they were little. A few years ago, when I was Cookie Mom’ing, they had been changed to Caramel De’Lites!)
Also like the thin mints, but even more than those I love the peanut butter patties–but only straight from the freezer.
Comment
I’m with you, Julie. I used to be a thin mint girl, and still love them, but samoas…
Also love tagalongs. Thin mints and tagalongs straight from the freezer are wonderful.
Comment
We had ours before the holidays. Right after Halloween, in fact. Halloween candy and cookies. All at once. I bought ten boxes from my daughter and have the extra padding on my tush to prove it.
LOL. Favorite is definitely Tag Alongs. Yum.
Comment
Unfortunately, where I lived Girl Scouts didn’t come around and I wasn’t one. Hopefully now that I live in town I can get some of those Thin Mints everyone loves! I know my husband loves them so I’m sure we’ll be getting plenty. I can’t wait!
Comment
It’s so funny you’re talking about this today. Just yesterday my 9 year old son asked me when girl scout cookies were going on sale. Now I can tell him any day. Yes, they are a big deal here in California and my hubby is a sucker for anyone who comes to the door. One year he bought two boxes of each kind! Our favorites are the Samoas too. But thin mints right out of the freezer are yummy too. Good luck to your daughter and her troop, Julie!
Comment
When I was a kid I was a Camp Fire Girl and we sold candies and cookies. Almond Roca were my favorite. The only Girl Scout cookies I know about are the Thin Mints and Shortbread so I googled to see what they have. I think I’d go for the Lemonades and Peanut Butter sandwiches.
Comment
Okay, I’ll get this off my chest right away…Julie, your pastor was a total JERK for taking your money for the church fund! I’ve never met the guy and I don’t like him!
I LOVE Thin Mints but won’t be buying any this year. I’m lactose intolerant and haven’t been able to eat them for several years now, besides, I have absolutely NO self control when it comes to those cookies. I used to put several boxes of them in the freezer. Then when I had a Thin Mint crisis I would pull out a box and just eat myself silly.
Have a great day all,
Cher

Cher, the worst part of it was–he WASN’T a jerk. He just retired last year and he’s incredibly beloved and even 20 years after I left that school, he still knew me when he saw me. As an adult, I think there was much more to that story…but alas, we’ll never know.
But it did make me VERY jaded at a young age about giving money to that church and when I became an adult, I refused to get married there or to become a member of that parish. Very negative feelings for a very long time.
I’m like an elephant when you piss me off…I don’t forget!

My daughter was in girl scouts for 4 years. I hated selling because you have them at your disposal. But when you’re hunting them down they’re nowhere to be found. My favorites are the thin mints and the shortbread. I think I still have thin mints in my freezer. My nieces will be selling them so I’ll be set. We have so many troops in my area. It gets frustrating when you leave every store and are asked. I know they are doing what they’re supposed to but we have too many troops and the people get angry because they’re everywhere.
Comment
Love Thin Mints and the Trefoils but my favorite is the peanut butter sandwich cookie. Hands down! I’ve tried freezing them to keep from eating a whole box only to discover that they’re even better when frozen.
Not buying this year. Uh-uh, no way! Will avoid all GS at all costs, except to make a donation.
Comment
I’m a Thin Mints gal. Yum Yum I will buy mine from a girl scouts that set up tables at the local grocery store, since the troops in our area don’t do the door to door.
Comment
Michelle, there’s no reason for people to get angry. A polite NO is already acceptable. Most people just say, “I just bought a box yesterday.” Our troop, at least, is not high pressure!
Comment
Yes! GS Cookie time!
Okay, my faves are the peanut butter patties (Tagalongs, I think) and the Samoas. Truthfully, I liked the peanut butter ones from 20 years ago. They changed bakers and changed the flavor.
I remember when they were only $2.50 a box and my mother remembers when they were under $1.00. Yup, we’re old.

Mmmmm… I love Samoas, too, and the Tagalongs! Is it that time of year already??
Comment
I was a Girl Scout for years and I hated selling door-to-door. I barely sold any because I was so shy. What made it worse was that my twin sister was always the top seller in my troop!
Around here, the troops sell in front of the grocery stores, etc. I try to buy a box whenever I can. I love the Samoas!
Comment
Julie:I have seen the ice cream with thin mints in it (out here it is Dryer’s, you know how we West Coasters are). It has always looked good, but I never had room in my freezer. Now that we have a separate freezer, I’ll have to get some!
Comment
Julie, I am in California & love that you map-quested locations for See’s! You know you can order online!!!
Whne I was in GS there was only one kind of cookie & I don’t recall the price but it was cheaper than they are now! I love the peanut butter ones & the thin mints. They are all good!!! That’s the problem!!!
Thanks for letting us know it is time for Girl Scout cookies! Yea, a friend of mine has a granddaughter that is still in GS so I always buy from her. It is nice to have a supplier!!
Comment
I still love the Thin Mints, but also love the Cartwheels. :) Yummy.

lol Donna on having a supplier! You cookie junkie you.

Julie,
Jaded is my middle name when it comes to the church and religion. My beliefs have changed so much over the years. I’m a member of the Cher Gorman church now. :-)
I suppose where your minister was concerned he probably was pressured from the local Diocese to take a great portion of the money and give it to the “church” fund. Like the Catholic church needs money…Too bad.
I used to be an elephant about never forgetting a slight but I’ve learned to let them go. Granted it took a lot of therapy to make that happen but hey!

Julie,
all this talk about cookies is making me hungry right now. And that one on top of the page looks yummy. What a pity I’ve never had the pleasure of tasting them. But if they taste as good as they look I think I wouldn’t complain…
Hope everyone has had a great week so far
See you

Having been a Girl Scout from Brownie through Senior Scout (1955 – 1966), I have sold many a box of cookies. I remember when I first started selling them, they were 35 cents a box. It was a good thing when they went up to 50 cents, because you didn’t have so much trouble with change. Times have surely changed.
I haven’t seen any scouts selling them since I moved to Augusta in late 2005. I’ll be on the look out this year. I always loved the thin mints the best – frozen even better. Tried the Samoas once, they were almost too good. I knew I could easily become addicted and definitely couldn’t eat just one.
Cookies sales fund wonderful projects for the scout troops and the councils. I know that summer camps, overnight and day camp, were subsidized by the cookie sales in our council. I spent may a happy summer at camp and would encourage everyone to buy a box when they can.

Hi Julie -
I’ve never heard of See’s chocolate, and am intrigued. I haven’t had many Girl Scout cookies (I know- so deprived) – but I love frozen thin mints. Samoas are good too. They sell them at Target, etc. where I live. Delicious!

Try it…you won’t be disappointed.
(Donna, I do order online, but only for special occasions…too much of a good thing and all that!)
Comment
For all of you who don’t have a “supplier,” I’ll order a few extras and give them away as contest prizes.

I love the shortbread and the samoas.

Gotta have me some Samoas!!! We have a Girl Scout Troop that sets up a booth to sell cookies in front of the store where I work. They usually stay the whole week so I can get my fix.

Julie i am the same way, I used to LOVE Thin Mints but now i’m a samoas girl. I will order from whoever i get a form from first and then i usually buy some from the girl scouts in front of the grocery store. You know what everyone has to try Edy’s Ice Cream has a special girl scout cookie edition, the Chocolate chip thin mint is amazing. I love this time of year!!
Comment
THIN MINTS, baby. At least a case. Yes, a whole case, all for me. I’m afraid I’m a not so secret cookie slut.
Comment
My favorite is Thin Mints.
I always buy them when they come around.
Comment
I think that the Thin Mints are my favourite. They don’t come around selling them in my neighbourhood, but I can usually get them from the tables they set up in one of the malls.

I am a total tagalong girl. They are the chocolate covered peanut butter cookies!! I can and have eaten a whole box in one sitting. It’s a sad state of affairs. I have several suppliers and have already got my order in for the year. It is sad when a eight year old calls and asks if you want the usual order!!!!
Comment
You guys are making me hungry! I love thin mints (frozen!) and the peanut butter cookies! YUM! :grin1:

Frozen Thin Mints – they are my friend. Now to figure out how many points they are since I just joined Lb Watchers. :wallbash: I feel bad about you having to go to BG. BG is fun but that was definately a bait and switch! But now there are cookies I haven’t heard of, I may have to try them. I used to have to sell them and it’s a good cause so it’s good to buy them. Maybe I’ll just buy them and give them away.
Comment
Tagalongs for me! Yummy peanut butter and chocolate!!!! I just wish they had the cookies now!!!….I am very impatient waiting for them to arrive! :) I really enjoy when they have tables in front of local grocery stores! I can always stock up on the ones I missed or the ones I already ate all of ..LOL
Comment
Yay, samoas! I’ve loved them ever since my Brownie days.

Hey Jules, my fav girl scout cookie has always been, and will always be the shortbread cookie…yeah, I am plain jane…I remember selling these cookies when I was younger and lived in Jamaica…actually, I ate more than I sold and my mom had to pay for them…I usually support the girl scouts, having been a brownie…is that what they are called in America? I actually enjoyed my time while I was in the group…unfortunately we didn’t sell cookies for wonderful adventures like going to BG or Disney…we did some things for people who were homeless as well as spread awareness about drugs with the money we made…
Peace and love,
Paula R.
Comment
Laura J, I also liked the Sandwich cookies…those are the ones I ate the most of instead of selling them…I really did hate going door to door to try and get money from people…even to this day, I hate soliciting people for anything…
Peace and love,
Paula R.

Anyone looking for GS cookies should check the phone book for their local council phone number — We don’t get the door-to-door either — but plenty of parents let us know when they are for sale .. along with various troops selling at grocery stores, and other stores.. I sure wouldn’t let my child go door-to-door by themselves these days.
Comment
I’m a slave to Samoas, and I have twin girl scouts right next door. Therefore I expect four boxes of cookies coming my way shortly.

My husband was very kind to the girlscouts. He clearly and willfully defied the diet I put him on.
