You know, I think that within the realm of the writer’s life, nothing creates more angst, more dread, more hand-me-a-Xanax anxiety than author promotion. What works? What doesn’t? What do readers really want to see to get them to buy a book…I mean, must we all do this?

In complete honesty, that’s about the coolest thing ever, don’t you think? Yes, that’s really Carly’s latest release (have you bought it yet? If not…why not?) up on the Jumbotron in New York City’s Times Square. She didn’t know anything about it ahead of time, btw. A nice surprise from her publisher. Yeah, HQN!
Seeing this makes me wonder though…especially since my first book from NAL/Signet, PHANTOM PLEASURES, will be coming out next year and I need to start planning what I’m going to do to promote the book.
I know that readers say — first and foremost — update the website.
I’m so bad about that. I just had two new books out and I haven’t updated my website. The problem is this: I have only so much time in the day. It’s either write or put together the updates to my website, which then have to be forwarded to my web mistress, and then we have to make sure it all works. Of course, I always make the choice to write. But then, I also make the choice to watch the episode of HEROES that I missed last night (and no, I didn’t see Claire cut off her toe because I looked away. I love the show, but it can be so gruesome sometimes!).
New Year’s Resolution in October…update website.
I’m actually looking into the possibility of having a new website designed that allows ME to do the updates through WordPress, which is the program we use on this blog. I like this idea a lot.
I’ve also bought a little advertising…not a lot, a little, on a popular website.
That’s about all I’ve got planned…other than hitting heavy here on Plotmonkeys and hoping that my jungle friends will spread the word.
I always post excerpts here and of course, we talk about our books a lot (because, honestly, that’s the point, right?)…but what else can I do to get people into the bookstores, either virtual or brick and mortor? Any ideas?
You’re the readers in the trenches. You know what works on you and what doesn’t. You’re online…which means you’re part of a small community of readers who can influence the larger community of readers who don’t post on blogs or read review sites or watch book trailers. How do I get to those people? Any ideas?
And as incentive…anyone who comments today will be entered to win THE FIRST ARC of PHANTOM PLEASURES that will be out next year! (Actually the first three are in the mail on their way to three very special women with whom I share this blog…shhhh…don’t tell.) :gagged:
Tell me what I should do to promote this book…and what you’ll do if you win the ARC, read it and love it. The winner will get the chance to pony up!

By all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold over forty books to four publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her daughter, a spoiled dachshund, a haughty lynx-point Siamese and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

ACTUALLY adding to Julie’s questions – HOW DO WE FIND NEW READERS – assuming that our die hard readers go out and buy the book – the jumbotron is cool don’t get me wrong – but how many books were sold that way? How do we reach new/more readers?

As a reader and a writer I’ve found the personal touch goes a long way. I discovered Carly’s books when my occasional assistant, Hirsch, read one of her books–he was trying to impress a woman–and liked it. I had to find out what had convinced him to finish an entire book that wasn’t his normal reading material. But it’s Carly herself that will keep me buying her books. When I took issue with a phrase used in the promo material for her latest release and emailed her about it, she emailed back to explain what she’d been thinking. I was impressed. (Hirsch is deeply smitten.)

Wow Carly, too, too cool! Congrats on the awesome promo!
I’ve heard that word of mouth is still the best way of reaching a new audience, and with blogs and reader reviewers, I think that it’s the a very effective and rewarding way for me to discover new authors. Don’t get me wrong – it’s cool to get free books and promo items, but the most frequently used method I’ve used to choose new authors is based on other readers’ reviews and recommendations.
Comment
I think word of mouth is the very best way to go. But to do that….you have to have some readers already! As a newbie, I’ve been trying to think of things to get my name out.
Some authors have shirts made and they wear them shopping, conferences, ect. I think this is great BUT I live in a small town so I don’t see a whole slew of folks shopping. Conference would be good too, but I don’t go to a whole lot of conferences for the simple of matter the majority are just too darn far away! :cursing:
Give aways are going to be the BEST promo out there. I’ll read a free book every time (hey, can’t help it, I LOVE ME some free stuff and cheap stuff). If I enjoyed it, I’ll always look for that author for their next book or dig for their previous works.
I don’t think giveaways have to be limited to books either. You could do a block of chocolate and drop in a postcard or something with an excerpt on it.
I read where someone puts a sticker advertising their book on EVERYTHING they mail. I thought that was great. just think of how many people handle the mail before it gets where it’s going.

It’s funny that this is the topic today because hubby and I were just discussing this the other night. I was surfing while eating dinner and he asked why I wasn’t writing! He really was trying to be supportive because he knows about the Marathon I’m participating in.
Anyway, I told him I was researching websites and seeing how authors market themselves. BTW, Julie, no one will know you haven’t updated your website in a year because it says “Wow, it’s October” or something along those lines so you’re good for another month! :happy2:
I told him Carly was the one to watch and do what she does. She’s everywhere when a new book comes out – didn’t know about the Jumbotron!
but I get e-mails from Carly, AccessRomance (I think that was one of them) and then someone else. Of course, guest blogging is great too because I think each group of authors have their own readers and I know I’ve started reading a ton of new authors just by them being here.
The give-away/post a review that Alison Kent does is great too. And as a die-hard fan I should be on B&N and Amazon posting reviews (all good) for each of your books, I just always forget!
On Soapbox Queens a few readers were talking about postcards that Vicki had sent out announcing Over Hexed. But I agree with the others that word of mouth is the best and probably always will be.
About the guy…is romance missing a market there? I know, bear with me a sec… My son and I were talking about this the other day and he cracked some joke about him reading romance. I said, “Not if you want to learn what to do and what women want and like.” And he suddenly got very quiet and started thinking on that. A little later he said, “You know, that’s very true.” ? Just a thought. From years of being in marketing my brain automatically starts searching and looking for a different direction.

I’m with you Julie. The whole promotion thing gives me the hives.
And Carly…omg on the jumbotron. I think I’d pee in my pants if my publisher(s) ever did that for me. CONGRATS!
Word of mouth, definitely works. I also think contests where you give away your books. I’ve heard from a lot of readers that the best prize is always books, because that’s how you introduce readers to your writing.
Great topic. I’m always intererested in finding ways to promote and find new readers!

Good morning, Plotmonkeys and everyone!
Wow to the ad on the Jumbotron in Times Square, Carly! Personally I would think I had “arrived” if I saw my book up there!
For what its worth, here’s my take on Promo–I’m published in E-BOOK only. Although one of my e-books is available POD. My last e-book was released in February.
For a year I did promo with Coffee Time Romance–they were awesome. They did a wonderful job for me, getting chats lined up, getting my books reviewed, putting my name out there wherever they could. The hits on my web site increased steadily through this past May. The most hits I had was in April with 34,000. I was ready to throw a parade.
BUT, despite all the great promo, the hits on my site and wonderful reviews of my books this did not, I repeat, did not translate into sales. Again, I’m published in E-BOOK only and to really make any money at all publishing electronically you HAVE TO WRITE EROTICA and not just man/woman books but alien/man/woman books or SLASH or SLASH/alien/animal books…well you get the picture. Which I don’t. EROTICA is truly where the money is in E-BOOKS.
But hey, I knew this going in. I chose to go the E-book route to start getting my name out there.
Okay, enough about E-BOOKS and on to promo for Julie.
First, update your site and if possible put out a newsletter. I plan to have Coffee Time do this for me when/if/hopefully/if the planets and stars align correctly I get into print and on the bookstore shelf one of these millenea.
Second, I agree that word of mouth does get me out buying books especially if someone says “I just read this really great book by so and so.” And also if I know the author–like the plotmonkeys for instance. Personally, I think word of mouth is the BEST promo tool an author can have. Book trailers are nice, chats are nice, ads are nice but I rarely buy a book based on an ad, trailer or chat. I do read the reviews in RT and I check out the top rated books especially the Top Picks. I don’t always buy them though. I have to read at least the first page before making that decision.
Here is what I do when I go into a bookstore like Barnes and Noble or Borders looking for something good to read.
Usually at the front of B&N they have a “dump” set up with new releases and they also have a section up front with Best sellers shelved both fiction and non-fiction. I look at these books first. I pick up the books, flip to page one and read it. If I like what I’ve read on page one, in other words if I’m hooked, I buy it. Well not every single one because quite frankly I can’t afford to buy out the store although there are times I would like to.
Then I go to the romance section and I do basically the same thing. I look at the books that are turned “cover out” first. I’m always looking for a new author to read so looking at these books helps me find them. I just found a new historical author this way that I love–Anne Gracie.
For me, its important to see books shelved with “cover out”. I look at those first.
But the single most important thing for me in book buying decisions is WORD OF MOUTH. Period. I took this workshop a while back taught by Donald Maass and I remember him saying that books end up on the NYT list because of word of mouth. I don’t know if that is true or not or if the publisher’s marketing strategies had a hand in it. I’ve never had that experience.
Of course, if an author can get Oprah to say she likes the book you’re guaranteed to end up on the bestseller list. At Borders they have a section with “Oprah Selected” books. And they definitely sell.
That’s my two cents,
Cher

The jumbotron looks awesome.
Julie: your web site – I don’t know what’s involved in maintaining what you have or after your potential redesign, but maybe you can find a highschool kid who’s a techie or even at the community college level and see if you can get them to do it for small bucks and they can use it as a portfolio piece either for school or for professional uses. You just tell them what you want?
I like the newsletter idea someone mentioned, but it can even just an e-mail saying x is coming out on x date. It doesn’t have to be long or too involved.
Word of mouth is always good … that’s how my TBR pile grew insane … along with seeing quotes on books by favorite authors on new writers or even established writers I wasn’t familiar with. I also love the book marks at conferences. I don’t know what that entails from the author’s view point, but I’ve also discovered new writers by getting a book mark promting their book or a pen, etc. So, even if you’re not at x event – send something.
Hope some of this helps …

Wow! Great ideas, everyone. I know my website is my biggest issue because the newsletter will come from that. I will do more research on this.
Jodie, LOL on my website being exactly a year out of date! Oy!!!!

Word of mouth works best for my friends and I. If I read something good, I tell them about it, and vice versa. Of course, I don’t know much about promoting a book since I’m not a writer, just a very avid book reader. Also, finding this site was great, because I never read Leslie or Julie before I found this blog, but have made it a point to read at least 1 book by each of them. I’ve read almost all of Carly’s stuff, and have read several of Janelle’s books. Not playing favorites here, just have heard of Carly and Janelle for a longer period of time. I’m in the middle of reading OVEREXPOSED at the moment, but Carly, I bought my copy of SWAK the other day. Plan on starting it this weekend. We have to go to Michigan for a wedding this weekend, so while hubby drives, I’ll be reading. Congrats on the Jumbotron.
OK, sorry I know I got off subject but just had some random things to say this morning.
Take Care all and Have a Good Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more thing…
Julie, when I saw the title of your upcoming book Phantom Pleasures in your sig line I immediately went to your web site hoping to see the cover, read a blurb and maybe an excerpt. I was surprised to find there was nothing there.
So, again all it takes is 30 to 45 minutes depending on how much stuff you have to make a list and send it to your web mistress. If you mention anywhere on-line that you have a new book coming out people will go to your site.

That is so cool, Carly…what does the top jumbotron say (How do I win $1000)!
I was just thinking of this last night while putting my oldest to bed (this is a tad spooky), but what I was wondering is how much time do you have to spend promoting books (and the promotional materials, do you have to pay for them or does the publisher).
I agree with Kathy on everything. I first heard of Carly, then I started reading the rest of you guys and haven’t looked back. I also think going on other’s websites (like when you visit the SOAPBOX QUEENS). I know some of my ‘new authors’ or single title authors on my wish lists are from when they have blogged here. Also, when you blog about the books you are reading (that’s how I found out about Julie Kenner and her soccer Mom series…which I adore!).
What would I do with an arc of yours? Savor it forever, never ebay it, and treasure it forever. I have a signed copy of a book from Leslie, Carly and Janelle (who is so awesome and sent me lots of plotmonkey bookmarks which my five year old gobbled up…the rest of you are awesome, too, but my five year old had stolen my one plotmonkey bookmark!). I will never get rid of those signed copies (who would want to? plus, who would want a copy “Dear Katie”)…..that is the perfect answer. I get rid of the unsigned ones (Okay, Lori Borill’s I can’t get rid of because I stare at the covers…they have such hot cover boys).
Hopefully, that answers your questions!!!

The most important thing to me about websites is that they are current. I also want a lot of info/video/pics/writing articles/etc. to keep me entertained/educated and make me want to return. Definitely link to purchase to make shopping easy and available for impulse buyers.
One thing that works well is having good relations with indie bookstores that will stock/promote books with an option for their customers to order signed copies. I know Kim Harrison links to bookstores on her MySpace and Website. Author Yahoo groups for fans seems to be getting more popular for paranormal readers. Kim Harrison and Rachel Vincent use these, and I can barely keep up with the messages through digest because they are so frequent. But the authors promise to reveal news to their fans on the loop first, etc. Makes it special for them. And those fans do A LOT of word of mouth on those loops about books they like to read.
But the promo king is J.A. Konrath on blogspot. He has MUCH to say on this topic.

well this has been a fun read of all peoples opinions.. i have a combination of alot of the posts. I started reading again heavily 5 years ago, and had nowhere to start, i found a site that featured chats everynight with different authors, i wont post which site being i dont know if thats allowed. But from there i formed friendships and favorite authors. The book giveaways are awesome. It gives me a chance to see if i like that author and if i do i buy alot of that persons work,so the giveaways do work trust me. I have shelfs full of books that i might not have bought or discovered otherwise. and i love everyone of them. I adore even bookmarks, promo items etc. I have kept every single item i have ever recieved.. i will admit it i still have the little lace package of personalized mm,s i won here, they are too cute to eat..lol..
guest blogging is awesome tool too, but like someone said, websites are very important, i always go to an authors website to check out what they have for books..
ARCs? i only have a couple and they are cherished possessions, i have never gotten rid of a book but i will always recommend what im reading during book chats.. we discuss what we are all reading every night…. its the best tool i have to finding new works…

:flamer: Congratulations Carly… Your a hot seller on the Jumbotran. Nice advertising idea from HQN.
Julie, my idea is doing book tours at various cities in the U.S. at Borders or Barnes & Noble. Its another way to promote your book or spread the word. I agree with everyone about spreading the word. Plus if you create bookmarks or post its with your book cover…
But I understand you got deadlines, but if you take 5 mins out of your day, your one step closer in updating the website. :hug2: I know you can do it.
Plus you should update your website.

Advertising is one of the biggest attention getters there is. I have been in retail for nearly 25 years and I can say that getting peoples attention is the first thing. Once you have their attention you can build around that so you keep them coming back for more. Julie, I don’t know how anyone could read your books for the first time and not come back for more. You definately keep me coming back for more!

All of the types of promotions that have been mentioned are good and certainly get the word out about your books. I have found out about new releases of favorite authors using all of those methods. I actually first started reading Carly’s books when I won one of her monthly website contests. Read that book and all of her subsequent ones.
Lately finding new authors for me has been by reading authors websites and blog sites like yours. I have enjoyed the blog days that feature a different author promoting their new release. If I am intrigued by the plot and characters I will definitely check the book out and usually buy it.
Also e-mails work well for me. I have been getting series of emails, usually five, that have excerpts from a book. I will always read the first day and if I am intrigued I will continue reading the subsequent ones.
By day five I am usually invested in the characters and their story and will buy the book.
The book trailers that have been coming out are fun and are a great way to peak the interest of readers, but I am not sure how many sales they generate. Although, it is always nice to see pictures of hot guys.
For me, it’s kind of like seeing a book cover come to life.
Congratulations on the Jumbotron Carly, What a wonderful vote of confidence from your publisher.

A mass media blitz! Subway Posters: Trapped audience who have nothing better to do than stare at a print add for your book. After a few subway rides, your name and the books title will be ingrained in their subconscious! Magazines: Feel free to use someone hunky-looking if it is for magazines like Cosmo. Late Night TV: I still remember adds for L. Ron Hubbard! Let the audience know there is a better option than watching re-runs of Knight Rider at 3am. Internet Banner Adds: Something eye-catching (but not the seizure-inducing ones) placed on reader fan sites. Wow, Carly! The Jumbotron in Times Square—you go girl!!
I think word of mouth is one of the best ways to learn about good books. Most of the friends I see now don’t read–how did that happen?! I’m always recommending my favorite authors (always all the Plotmonkeys) when I discuss books. I’m very active on the eHarlequin website which is for me a great place to learn about new books & authors. It is not always just Harlequin books. The authors that blog here have lead me to trying new authors. As an avid reader I would love to see some authors that do book signings in my area.
I need to go get dressed I’m suppose to leave my house in a few minutes to meet a friend for lunch & shopping! How fun! We haven’t had a chance to get together for awhile. Our weather is gorgeous so it will be a good day to get out and enjoy!

Ok Julie, I’m pretty sure your going to hate my suggestion, but how about Myspace?
I’m finding more and more authors on myspace, its a fun easy way to give the readers a personal connection with the author, and its very easy to keep updated.
Carly
that Jumbotron is awesome!!!

Again, Carly, that Times Square thing is a WOWWWWWW moment and I am so happy for you!!!
And Julie…an ARC? WAHOOOO!!!!!
I’m really enjoying reading these suggestions…but would like to take things further with a couple of questions, if you don’t mind.
First, I have MySpace. I have several hundred “friends” many of whom send me bulletin after bulletin either A. Promoting their own books or B. Filling out surveys with 100 personal questions that I really sometimes feel uncomfortable reading about a “friend” who is *truly* a stranger!
So I am not totally sold on the benefits of MySpace. It can be fun and I certainly enjoy following links to other authors sites, as well as “meeting” readers who have sought me out. But as a promo tool? No, I’m not sold.
And secondly-this topic has come up many times, including this week on Dear Author, a site I really enjoy. When is “friendship” with an author too much? Does someone who visits Plotmonkeys regularly–who “knows” us enough to pity Julie’s trash men or wonder what Bailey and Buddy are up to today, or show up to see the latest romantic thing Bruce does, or check on how Janelle’s doing on her diet–lose out on the “magic” of reading because they associate us: Julie, Carly,Leslie and, Janelle, with our books, and maybe give us a break because they *like* us?
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE this community and it is a daily injection of positve energy and happiness and friendship. I am not in any way saying I don’t *want* this friendship…but as a writer, I really and truly hope that you’re maybe picking up my first book because you feel like you “know” and like me from Plotmonkeys. But you keep picking them up because they’re so damn good.
Does that make any sense? How does everyone else feel about it?
Comment
Jumbotron…how cool is that? One easy way to promote is myspace…if you use it right. You can send a bulletin to all of your friends at myspace. Sadly, I need reminders. Yesterday, I ordered two books for my daughter because myspace writers sent a reminder about their new books. I love to read and I am always trying to find out what books are being published. It drives me a crazy when an author’s site does not mention an upcoming book. But you are not alone, Loretta Chase is pretty bad at self promotion. I could name numerous others.
Comment
I don’t get the myspace thing so I’m not sure about that. I don’t think anyone’s going to keep going out buying your books just because they like you on your site. I love reading everyones post on here. But I buy the books cause I like them(books).

I can honestly say Leslie, that because of plotmonkeys I have discovered new ( to Me) authors that I might not have otherwise read and loved their books. I first came here due to Carly’s website. Since then I have started reading you, Julie & Janelle, I’ve also fell in love with Julia London’s books, went to her website and discovered Sheri Erwin. Also through plotmonkeys I discovered Soapboxqueens, I’ve read Vicki Lewis Thompson before but have since discovered Rhonda Nelson & Jennifer LeBrecque.

As for finding new readers besides word of mouth first I would have to say COVERS and TITLES. Sometimes if I am looking for someone new to read I will go to the new releases table and see what jumps out at me, then read the back cover. So in my opinion covers and titles are important.
Another way I have started reading other authors is through a yahoo group. I have joined Lori Foster’s yahoo group and have picked up several other author’s books because they are a part of the group. So I would say online groups are good.
Lastly I would have to say anthologies. I have heard that some authors aren’t big fans of writing for anthologies but it is a good way to reach new readers. I think this could be especially helpful for newly published authors. To be printed with a well known author would mean lots of people would read your work.
Just my opinions but I hope they are helpful.

First WTG Carly on the Jumbotron!!!
Ok for promos I’ve picked up lots of new authors by word or mouth. Visiting different blogs has led me to find many new authors. If fact, I’ve found so many new ones that my TBR pile is even more out of control.
I admit I also love to go websites when I hear about a new author. First I look at the backlist page to see if I have read one of their books and might not remember the writer. I love to get the web newsletters too. The newsletters usually show if there are new books coming out or any contest.

Hi Julie! There just aren’t enough hours in the day, are there? I agree that word of mouth is the first thing to get me to read a book.
But Leslie, you hit it right on the head for me!
“I really and truly hope that you’re maybe picking up my first book because you feel like you “know” and like me from Plotmonkeys. But you keep picking them up because they’re so damn good.”
When I met Carly, Janelle and Julie in Dallas they were the NICEST people and so genuine, that if I’d never read one of their books, I would’ve gone out and bought them because of their personality.
And luckily, you all write such great books
that I keep on buying them!
Congratulations Carly on the Jumbtron – that is awesome! And I’ve already bought my copy!

WTG Carly!!!! So very cool! It would make me buy the book except, well, I already bought it.
Julie, I pick up books first because of recommendations by other readers. I have also discovered new authors I like because I will pick up an anthology because one or two of the authors I already like and then discover the other author is really good, so I have to go find all of their other books. That is how I got started reading your books. I picked up a copy of Boys of Summer with you, Leslie and Kimberly Raye because I am already a fan of their books and as a bonus the story was set just across the river from where I live. Now I grab your books whenever new ones come out.

I didn’t read any of the comments before I posted so I’m not sure if anyone said this or not.
What about a commerical on radio? I have no idea the cost but if you could get one on say Delilah (I don’t think that’s the spelling). anyway, she reaches tons of people all over the place.
I’d love to win a copy of this book!!
:flower4you:
I’ll tell everyone I know about it.
Oh, and remember I’m giving away a copy of Carly’s new book on my blog this week. Stop by and leave a comment to be entered. (Carly said I could tell you guys. Normally I don’t do that on other’s blogs.)

OMG, the cover is great!!! (don’t count this one since I just posted a comment a few minutes ago)

Absolutely amazing cover Julie!!

Julie love the new cover. What about excerpts or book makers in Doctors offices. We have thousands of doctors offices in the United States. Word of mouth goes a long way. And everyone eventually has to go to the doctors. Congratulations Carly!

Delurking to wish Carly a HUGE congrats! That is just too amazing. I’ve been paying attention to this discussion because I’m always on the look out for something to help promote my books. Loved the posts!
Julie, that is a phenomenal cover!
Congrats!

I am pretty good about telling people I know if I think an author stinks or if they write a pretty good book. I can’t really tell you how to promote anything.I myself when I go into a store I look at the books the first thing that catches my eyes is the cover. if the expert is good then I read the back if the back passes then I get it. BTW If I seen your book I would pick it up I LOVE the cover. I don’t always do that though I would have misses out on Catherine Anderson if I only went by covers of books I am starting to get into those ” romance with a side magic and stupid humor” I wish I could help with the promoting idea but I cant lol. I will used a little word of mouth though :arrr:

That awesome Carly congrats!! Julie I know a few other people said it but I’ll say it again, myspace. Its such a great way to get new readers, one of my favorite things to do, as a member on myspace, is to look at my friends, friends and their friends. You can reach MILLIONS of people that way. Other than that word of mouth is the next best thing.

I think WORD OF MOUTH is the best way to promote a book, but I also love to read about new and future books on various websites and blogs plus the author’s; I also look for books I would read on e-mails I receive from authors and various groups. I have also found another interesting way to learn about new books to read is from the people working at bookstores; they have given me good information when I ask them for books I might like in differnet categories.

Julie, that is one YUMMY cover!!
Carly, congrats on the Jumbotron–serious awesomeness!!
Hmmm… many dittos to what other have recommended–yes, word of mouth, definitely. And an updated website, even if it’s just a single page with release date info and a short blurb. Also the quick e-mail newsletter update is great–Suzanne Brockmann does a good job with hers. It comes out periodically with little bullet point highlights of what’s coming out soon, where she’ll be signing, any interesting events she’ll be involved in… I’ve never personally visited MySpace (am I like the last person ever??) so that’d do nothing for me, and it sounds like it might be a duplication of effort if you’re already updating your site. And have to agree with others who’ve said that they’ve gotten to know all four of you Plotmonkeys better through this site, and now are faithful followers of all four of you authors’ terrific books…
I think someone else already mentioned Alison Kent’s excellent give-away/post a review in return deals, and that may help generate good press, too. (I confess that I always read Amazon reviews for books, so if you can encourage readers to post their thoughts there, that may help traffic in general for your books…)
As for ARCs–cherish them forever, of course!

Julie, Absolutely a w e s o m e COVER AND COVERS DO SELL!
Leslie, the first book of yours I bought cause you were a plotmonkey.
The second I bought cause I liked your personality and wanted to be supportive.
The rest I bought cause I enjoy reading what you write.
I never bought a book cause of Bruce but his support of you makes him a very nice and often funny guy. I also never ever buy more than one book if the writer doesn’t hold my attention. Friend or not.
Janelle, Got my goody envy, Thank you so much.
Carly, how cool is that, that your daughter posted her pride in her Mom.

Julie, excellent topic today and I’m enjoying reading everyone’s posts and suggestions. Promotion is the second hardest part of being a writer (the first is writing the damn book!

Right after my post this morning I got hit with a stomach bug or something, and I’ve been in bed since. But I wanted to get back on here and read these suggestions. It’s so hard for an aspiring writer to know what’s going to work (if I ever get published) and there has been invaluable information on here today.
Julie -that cover is hot and I’m so glad you’re working on updating the sight.
Leslie – I bought your first book because you were a monkey. I keep spending my hard earned money (okay, hubby’s hard earned money) on your books because I love them! They’re good and that’s why we want you to keep doing them! That’s why we’re here – hoping to pay you back, just a little for all the pleasure your books bring us – by being cheerleaders and encouraging you to keep doing what you’re doing – even when it’s tough and you’re thinking about finding a full time job elsewhere.
:hug2: Janelle – hope today’s trip to the dentist wasn’t too bad and that now you’re finished!
Ugh…back to bed… :sicksick:

Congrats, Carly.
Here’s my idea: Have a contest and give away tote bags with the covers of your most recent books on them. A couple of years ago, I won a nice tote bag from Karen Rose. It has the pictures of several of her covers on one side. I use it as my library bag (my two kids check out TONS of books every week) and I carry it with me when my kids have music lessons, soccer, etc. You would not believe how many people have asked me about that author and her books because of the book covers on my bag! I know of at least 6 people who have gotten her books because they saw me with the bag and asked about her books. WORD OF MOUTH—with a little help. Maybe not as big as the screen at Times Square, but it has spread the word.
Second idea: Guest Blog. I read several blogs and found this one, and you wonderful authors, from a link on another blog.

As for what I would do with my very own ARC……I would make sure that I read it in public (kids sports practice, etc0 so that other people will see me, and be VERY JEALOUS that I have a copy and they don’t & I will be sure to praise it to everyone I know……word of mouth again.

Niiiiccce cover! If I read it, would be happy to post a review on B&N.
As for promos – how about offering up a contest – anyone who buys the book and sends in their receipt to you will be entered for a prize, maybe a gift certificate to a bookstore. I have seen authors do this occasionally.

Julie, that cover is HOT!
For promo: need updated website. Get reviews done and posted. Be visible out there. Go to message boards, blogs, wherever…to get the word out.

Hey Julie, it’s been a while huh?
Congrats on the jumbotron promo Carly…nice surprise….
Julie, I can’t imagine what it takes to go through all the promo and marketing of “your” work…general statement that…I am also in the midst of trying to come up with ways of promoting my poetry book that will be in the marketing phase this December…not sure what to do…
As a reader, I use word of mouth for my fav authors…I also try to talk to my friends via email or I mention you guys and many of my other favs on other blogs…I pushed you guys tonight too…tried to get someone interested in Carly, but the lady I was talking to thought she may have already read SWAK…picked it up today at Walmart BTW…now I will have two copies, just like Leslie’s Overexposed…
Back on track now…I have seen ads for books in subway trains as posters in NYC as well as tv commercials…maybe that’s another way to go…I know that you go to RWA conferences and such, but have you ever gone to local bookstores or libraries to do signings? I think that is another way you could promote your work…the contests you guys do are wonderful as well…I won’t get on you about your site, because you are working hard enough as it is…I rarely pop on the other monkey sites because I know that I can catch them here…
I hope that some of my ideas help you…I am interested in what others say too because I am going to have to do some marketing myself in the near future…Have a great night…I am going to hop off and go get some sleep now…talk to you all tomorrow…
Peace and love,

Leslie, the first book I read that you wrote was before I knew you were a
…I must confess that Julie is the reason I even got to “know” you and the other monkeys…I checked out her site after reading WYP where I found the link to this site…after hanging around here for a while, I got to “know” you guys better, which caused me to buy more of your books, but then I fell in love with your characters and now, I just buy your books because you are a kick a$$ writer…so there…I am a book snob…if I don’t like an author, I don’t buy his or her books…I even give away the one that I already owned and read…I will finish the one I started, but I won’t keep it…I don’t use libraries because I have gotten to the point in my life where I can look at a book and know that it is a keeper without reading the back or the first page…yeah, I am that good…lol…I hope that brought a smile to your face…buying books are my one vice and I spend a lot of hardearned money on them, so know this…I like your style and I love the fact that you have a sense of humor which shows in your books…and you are honest, based on what I have seen here…I don’t buy your books because you are a monkey but because you are a WRITER…you get what I am saying? I have erred on the side of repetition…I know…
I love coming to this community because I get my daily laughs and learn more about what’s going on in your minds…
Peace and love,

Leslie, I buy yours books because they are so darn good and want more canolli scenes.
Plus your a fellow marylander who gave me awesome tips to explore in Frederick area. :grin1:
Julie… love your new cover.
I added that book to my future reading books for next year.
Janelle… :tinitime: Can you drink any alcohol to numb the pain from the root canal? Im sorry to hear your in pain. Here’s a east coast hug… :hug2: Hope that helps.

that is so cool. such a great cover

Huge congrats to you Carly!! :tinitime:
Promos: I absolutely love free books! Can’t beat it!! I won Leslie’s Killing Time… GREAT!! and moved on to all of the “Trouble” books!
Janelle & Carly I’ve been reading a long, long time… I think I first got into your books via “The Temptation” line. Julie I started reading Dirty Little Secrets because of this website.
I like reader /writer recommendations on blogs. I don’t always agree but it sparks an interest in at least checking it out. I used to go to Mary Gardner’s Recommended Reads site so I was disappointed to see it end.
If I won an ARC I would post on various websites my opinion and on B&N!
Good Luck Julie!! Absolutely Love the Cover!!

There are alot of great suggestions posted here. I’ve found some really great authors stemming from ONE contest I entered through an online contest site. The listed contest had you go to this author’s site in order to enter, which I did, checked out the site, and on their LINKS page found other author sites which I promptly visited, entered contests, read blogs, and joined yahoo groups. I can’t even remember who that author was, but if I could that person would get a big thank you from me. Since that first contest 5 months ago I’ve gotten to know many new (to me) authors and their books, won some prizes (which I love!), and received freebies (magnets, bookmarks, bookplates, etc.) of books that I look forward to reading. That’s my story. Thanks for all the great topics and chances to know new authors and different genres.

Hi,
Congrats on the jumbotron. I’m a newbie to your site, but found this blog entry while searching for ideas to help promote an author I work with. I run a small PR firm. This is not a commercial for me, but I wanted to share a few things I have learned (in addition to agreeing with the Word of Mouth, and update your website suggestions posted above).
-Go to Amazon and update the search suggestion tags for your books, so that when someone is searching for your name or your type of books, your name will move up higher on the search list. Or ask your fans to do so. It’s really easy.
-Update your website often – and here’s why…google (an other search engines) now use new or updated content in it’s rankings. i.e, new content brings you higher on the search engine list.
-Talk with your web person to be sure that your website uses Keywords and metatags behind the scenes to help search engines find your content when someone searches for your type of book, or your book titles and your name.
-Be sure that your Amazon page links to your webpage (as well as your publisher’s page, B&N, Borders etc) links to your website, that’s another way that search engines find you and move your info higher in the rankings.
-Use the personal touch with bookstores is another idea that worked for one of the authors I work with was to take a few copies of the book to the big bookstore chains and the Idie bookstores and meet the book staff there. Get them excited about your book, and sign a few copies for those who buy for/or stock/handle your section.
-And ask your readers to review your books on their favorite on-line bookstores – Amazon, B&N etc.
-send a press release to your local newspaper books editor, ask if they would consider reviewing your book, if they have someone who reviews your type of book. often the local angle can really help you get in the paper and books local book sales.
Thanks for listening, and I hope I didn’t intrude too much.

I would talk about the book on my blog. I talk about what everything I read on there. To reach readers not online? Commercials on TV and ads and excerpts and contests in magazines seem to work. I love when I see a commercial for a new book. I don’t see many on TV but when I do, I always get excited and check it out.
Carly that is awesome about them promoting your book like that! I’m sure it will get a TON of attention!!
Author websites are very important. Whenever I hear about an author that I’ve never read, the first thing I do is search for their website. I like when they list the order of their series books and tell you whether or not you can read them out of order. I like to hear about upcoming books and books in progress. Contests are fun. I like excerpts and sneek peaks. I like to hear what the author likes to read and what they’re currently reading. I like a colorful and fun site. Some sites are very bland. It’s VERY dissapointing when an author doesn’t update their site for a long time as I like to visit everyday. A blog on their site is fun too.
I’d love to be entered to win your new book Julie as I love everything you’ve written.

Oh also postcards in the mail to your readers to remind them about your new book coming out works too!
