It’s been a while since we’ve talked about books we’ve been reading. I have recently been on a romantic suspense glom (since I’m trying to break into romantic suspense) as well as squeezing in other things here and there. I always enjoy talking about books and we haven’t done for quite a while here at Plotmonkeys. So let’s have a book club Tuesday!
I’ve recently read two Allison Brennan books:
I really liked this one. The concept of a heroine having put an innocent man behind bars for 34 years was really different and fresh, and I liked that Brennan let the wrongly convicted man behave as I think a man would behave in that situation.
The romance was really effective in this one, too. I liked the hero and heroine and really liked the way their relationship developed. Their relationship was very believable, they were true partners, and I definitely felt the spark between them.
This was pretty good, though I liked The Kill better. I liked the mystery aspect, but the romance just didn’t feel as compelling in this one. But still well worth a read!
I still have the first two books in the first trilogy…I know I’m reading them out of order, but I’m looking forward to it!
A
for both Brennan books.
I also read my first Karen Rose book, NOTHING TO FEAR:

This one was just terrific. I was fascinated by the villain, and loved the romantic relationship. The h/H sparked from their first meeting and slowly built their attraction into a truly loving relationship that healed them both. Absolutely recommend this one…BUT…it is kind of gory. No problem for a Stephen King fan like me, but if you don’t like really dark stuff, there are a couple of scenes that might squick you out.
But for me, it was just a fantastic read. A big
I read a really good Lisa Gardiner book called THE THIRD VICTIM.
This is an older title, but I didn’t realize it when I picked it up. It was disturbing, since the story revolved around a school shooting at a grade school. But very well done. Not much romance, it’s much more of a suspense with a bit of a romance. But I realized that there’s a sequel continuing the relationship between the hero and heroine and I have just ordered it so I can see how these two very different people work it out.
I also read a Linda Lael Miller book called DEADLY GAMBLE.
WOW–this one I LOVED. The heroine’s name was Mojo Sheepshanks…and she sees dead people. Really. The book opens with her dead husband showing up in her bedroom…he’s trying to make amends for the crappy things he did to her in life. Eventually he brings her her dead cat. Sounds so morbid, but it was really hilarious. Meanwhile there’s this intriguing mystery involving the murder of the heroine’s parents going on, and a very sexy romance between Mojo and a divorced cop. I so hope Miller is going to write more Sheepshanks books because I definitely wanted MORE!
I don’t often write fan letters to authors, but I did write to both Karen Rose and Linda Lael Miller to let them know how much I loved their books. I know, they probably get tons of reader mail, but I really wanted to thank them for the genuine reading pleasure I got from their books.
You might also remember from my blog earlier this summer that I also read all 7 Harry Potter books. I loved the whole over-arcing story. I liked 1-3, really loved 4, liked 5 a lot, 6 not so much, and really liked 7. So I guess that makes 4 my favorite.
That sums up my reading lately. How about you guys…anyone else read any great books?

Leslie Kelly used to say she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up, but then she discovered Nancy Drew books. Being a flashlight-under-the-covers-nose-in-book reader throughout her childhood, she couldn’t think of anything else she’d rather do as an adult than continue to lose herself in fictional stories. Her real life marriage of 20 years to the man of her dreams is a constant reinforcement that happily-ever-afters really can happen…and that they’re worth writing about. Living in Maryland, Leslie spends her non-writing time laughing a lot with the above-mentioned romance hero and their three daughters. Though an author of more than thirty sexy, contemporary comedies, she has recently branched out to write dark romantic suspense under the pseudonym Leslie Parrish.

I have been bouncing all over the spectrum with reading. I just finished Faye Kellermann’s newest one, The Burnt House. I love her Decker/Lazarus stories. When I picked up the first one a couple of years ago, I immediately orderd them all from the library system and bought the ones they didn’t have. Then donated them to the collection. Love this series.
I also just finshed Kathy Reich’s recent release, Bones to Ashes. Again, I love the recurring characters. Although it bears little resemblance to the TV show Bones, the mysteries are some of the best out there. I love the fact that her love life just plain sucks. I want to smack her somewhat Hero, and slap her not-quite-ex upside the head. But the parrot who used to live in a whorehouse is the best.
Right now I am reading Catherine Mulvany’s Something Wicked. Another suspense story. I get on kicks as to what I am in the mood for. Right now it is dark. My mood, and therefore, my reading, that is.
I am holding onto Overexposed until I feel like I am in a better mood to really enjoy it.
Oh, well, off to physical therapy. And Daughter goes back to college today!!!!

In the past 2 weeks I’ve read Gena Showalter’s Nymph King, which, if you read Sat. blog you know I absolutely loved – I can’t explain why, maybe because I’ve always been fascinated with Atlantis, but I really enjoyed the characters.
I’ve also read “Stripped” – of course, loved it. And then came “Overexposed”, loved it too – and I’d agree that it’s the hottest Blaze I’ve read. And right now, I’m over halfway through Joel’s “Borne to Be Wilde” – WOW!! What a long wait, but so worth it.
I’ve got a couple of old Leslie Kelly books in line next, and another couple of Gena Showalter’s after that.

ev, I love Catherine Mulvany. I had her book in my hands this weekend, but ended up (because my husband was with me and he arches his eyebrow over too many book purchases) putting it down until next week. I bought Shari Shattuck’s EYE OF THE BEHOLDER and Caridad Ferrer’s IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ACCENT.
As for reading, I just finished Jennifer Crusie/Bob Mayer’s AGNES AND THE HIT MAN. Brilliant. Absolutely page-turning, awesome characterization and hot sex. Really, really good. Can’t say enough about how I loved this book.
Prior to that, I read Stephanie Bond’s BODY MOVERS and TWO BODIES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE–also both brilliant. I can always count on Stephanie for a great story with compelling mystery and chuckles, too. And sexual tension…oh, my. There are three guys in this series for the heroine and she’s not sure which one she wants…I have my favorite, but they’re all hot in totally different ways. Awesome series.
I also read one elementary school book for my daughter’s class–CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF A THIRD WORLD KIND by Jennifer J. Stewart. Remember when I was complaining about how dry and boring my daughter’s summer reading books were? Well, Stewart’s book was added by the district to what we call “battle books” meaning the 4th graders will be competing with their summer reading, plus the district books, in a contest at the end of the year. Stewart’s book was awesome! Funny, a little snark in the voice…the book is set in Nepal, which was fascinating. Emotional, but not melodramatic. The voice was my favorite thing, but the writing was flawless, too. I’m really excited about this book and can’t wait for my daughter to read it. This was one I had to email the author–that’s how good it was. If you all have 10-12 year old kids, this is a great choice of a book for them. Boy or girl, though the protagonist is a girl. But the subject matter, I think, would appeal to a boy, too.
That’s all…I’m hogging Leslie’s blog!

My three most recent reads were Nalini Singh’s CARESSED BY ICE and it’s such a fantastic series. This is the third of her series and just releasing this week and it rocks.
I also read the first JD Robb book (yeah, I’m only years and years behind that craze, but now vowing to catch up since I’ve fallen madly in love with Roarke). So now I need to buy…uh….like 30 more of the JD Robb books or something to catch up. Yikes!

One of the best reads for me this year was Andrea Kane’s THE DARK ROOM. Absolutely LOVED it!! Just read Stephanie Bond’s BODY MOVERS 2 (second in her series) and like Julie I loved both books. Read Rachel Gibson’s TANGLED UP IN YOU and thoroughly enjoyed it (it’s the third story in a series about 4 author friends, but they do stand alone). Also recently read Lori Foster’s SIMON SAYS and really enjoyed it.
I’m going book shopping tomorrow and I’m picking up OVEREXPOSED and Janelle’s BORN TO BE WILDE. Really looking forward to those two books! Also looking forward to Susan Andersen’s COMING UNDONE, Jayne Castle’s SILVER MASTER and Jerri Corgiat’s TAKE ME HOME (The 5th book in her HOME series – great series BTW).
Leslie, my Mom has Linda Lael Miller’s DEADLY GAMBLE book. I can’t wait to read it since you gave it such high praise.
Comment
OVEREXPOSED and BORN TO BE WILDE come in the mail tomorrow
I loved THE SECRET SOCIETY GIRL two books and Julie Kenner’s SOCCER MOM books (so much that I ordered the other ones by her). I also LOVED Lori’s UIA. Lately, I have been reading the Harlequin NASCAR series books (fun reads, I don’t even like NASCAR). Don’t ask me why. I guess I need to escape from my stressful life.
Gotta go wake up the munchkins…school starts today :bootyshak:

I’ve been picking up everything Susan Elizabeth Phillips has ever written. Finished her Chicago Stars series, and took a break to read Shannon Hollis’ Blaze The Naked Truth. Next in my TBR pile is Overexposed, and last night I picked up a Jennifer Cruise book, Anyone But You, simply because I’ve never read a Jennifer Cruise and she’s a name that keeps popping up.
Comment
I read Julie’s “Stripped” and loved it. Then I read Carly’s “Cross My Heart” and “Simply Sexy” and loved them too. Then I read “Taken” by Tori Carrington – Great BLAZE! Now I’m reading Double Dare by Tawny Weber.
At the moment I’m kind of hooked on BLAZE because I’m in the middle of writing one. The only problem with reading such terrific books by the aforementioned authors is that after I’m done, I get depressed. Because the books were so good I don’t think I could ever write one that good! In fact, since I sent the proposal to HQ I’m thinking what I sent is crap!
In line to be read are Rachel Gibson’s last two books, Ghosts and Roses by Kelly St. John–Love that title, The Cop by Cara Summers, Susan Anderson’s Coming Undone…and the list goes on.

Cher – :hug2: I so feel your pain! I’m right there with you…will I ever be able to write anything close to those that I love to read so much?

I am currently reading Someone to Love by Jude Deveraux. I’ve recently been on a Julia London kick, who I love, love, love… American Diva was great! Read She’s No Angel…Loved it!! Read The Devil Who Tamed Her by Johanna Lindsey…always enjoy her books!
Also read code name Bikini by Christina Skye which wasn’t as good as some of her other books. I just got Overexposed which I can’t wait to read and Amazon sent me an email to say Joel is on his way
Comment
Cool–I’m loving these recommendations! Julie, you don’t have to send me Agnes…if it’s that good, I’m sure I’ll want my own copy.
So glad to hear so many of you enjoyed and/or ordered Overexposed! I SO appreciate it. Funny on how hot everyone thinks it is…I really don’t consider it any hotter than any of my other Blazes. Is it just the pastry sex? :happy2:
And oy…if you think it’s hot, just wait until One Wild Wedding Night!

Hey Leslie~ Just wanted to tell you again how much I enjoyed Overexposed!
I also recently read Lori Wilde’s Blaze, My Secret Life, which I really liked. I’ve been reading some Brava anthologies too, including I Brake For Bad Boys – and Janelle, if you read this – loved your story best!! Lastly, but not least, I’d like to recommend two fantastic books – Monkey Love and Monkey Star by Brenda Scott Royce. She is a RWA chapter mate of mine and her books are terrific! They’re found in the fiction section but there is wonderful romance, along with a good dose of humor. There’s a blurb from Janet Evanovich on the front cover that says…Holly Heckerling is a lot like Stephanie Plum-only nobody’s shooting at her. And it’s true! Monkey Love should be read first and I really think you all will love it!
BTW, I’m reading the Nymph King right now – thanks Jodie!
Comment
I love all of the books I’ve read by Karen Rose. ‘The Black Sheep and the Princess’ by Donna Kauffman was fantastic! ‘Smart and Sexy’ by Jill Shalvis is a must read.
Comment
HOLY COW, I forgot about STRIPPED (very paranormal lite, like Julie said), Carly’s CMH….
they were awesome, too! I read way too many books this summer!
Got the boys on the bus without hysterics, except from my 2 1/2 year old and he wasn’t even getting on the bus! No school for him until October 1st! Guess he just loves his brothers.
Comment
I also read SHE”S NO ANGEL! I told you this list is way too long!
Comment
I’m reading, and enjoying, Lori Foster’s SIMON SAYS. I’m a slow reader these days — I wish I had MORE time to read!!! But, that doesn’t stop me from buying MORE books! OY!
Jodie, I’m glad you’re enjoying BORN TO BE WILDE! He’s technically released in bookstores this week, and I hope that everyone who has waited two years for his story finds he was worth the wait!
Katie and Tina — I hope you enjoy Joel when he arrives!
Robin — Thanks for the kudos on I BRAKE FOR BAD BOYS! That was my very first “Wilde” story — and is still one of my personal favorites! So glad you liked it, too! :grin1:

Katie — we all love our kids, but isn’t it lovely when they go back to school?

Leslie, I loved the cannoli scene in Overexposed. WOW!
Recently I’ve read Allison Brennan’s Fear trilogy, Nora Roberts’ High Noon, and Eileen Dyer’s Head Games. In between I read Lori Borill’s Underneath It All and, of course, Leslie’s Overexposed. Must have lighthearted, hot stuff to balance the really gory/graphic crime descriptions in the the Brennan and Dyer books.
Although, Nora’s dead snake really icked me out! I had goose bumps crawling. ewww.
I have the new Barbara Delinski calling me. As well as Jude Deveraux’s Someone to Love.
I still have this huge TBR pile and I ordered some more this weekend. How dumb was that? Ijust can’t help myself.

Me, I’ve read two of the Hot Zone books over and over again. I think I’ve already read them about a dozen times and don’t get tired of starting again. Then, I loved the first of the Hot Zone, too but I only possessed it in German and a few weeks ago, I finally ordered it in English . I can’t explain but it sounds that much better in its original language than the translation.
The last book I read wriiten by you was She’s no angel. I truely enjoyed reading it and couldn’t stopp. After being finally through I ordered overexposed but it’ll take a while till I’ll get it. I’m not that lucky like you living in the USA who can drop by a bookstore and order a book.
Maybe you’re wondering why I’m writing such a long comment but I’m really bored because I’m through your books I possess and like I said the books I ordered…it’ll take a while
Comment
Vero, If you don’t mind me asking, where do you live?
Susan I read the Black Sheep and The Princess, and it just didn’t hold my attention, I struggled to get through it and I’m not sure why because I usually enjoy Donna Kauffman?? I think maybe it’s because I thought it was going to be another “glass slipper” book and it wasn’t. I really enjoyed that series.
Janelle, I’m sure Joel will be worth the wait!
Comment
Janelle – thanks for the reminding me about “Simon Says”. I’ve heard a lot of people mention how great it is, but I keep forgetting to get it. Put it on my list right now!
Comment
hey tina, I don’t mind at all. I think it’s great that you’re interested and want to know more.
I live In a small town (about 20.000 residents) called Rosenberg . It’s near Nuernberg. Do you know Nuernberg. If not: Its a city near Munich. I really like our town but sometimes I’m a little annoyed about living here because I love reading American books. Between us? American writers are much better than German ones. But it always takes pretty long till I receive my ordered books because they have to be imported from the United States.
I hope I don’t bother you but where exactly do you live? Is it a big city or a small town? Do you like living there?
Another thing that bothers me is the time. when it’s for example 7 a.m. in the US, it’s already 1 p.m. in Germany.
Love,
Vero

Right now I am reading Kidnapped by Jo Leigh and before that was Beyond Seduction by Kathleen O’Reilly & Take Me Tonight by Roxanne St. Claire and Into the Storm by Suzanne Brockmann. Those are my most recent reads. Not sure what I will read next, probably not another Blaze. I love them but need something else for a change. It is fun to see what everyone else is reading especially the Plotmonkeys. It is always dangerous to see all the recommendations and at the same time good to hear about books you may not have looked at.

Janelle: I am SURE I am going to love reading about Joel. Holy Cow…I think I am going to need to crank the A/C.
Honestly, Janelle, I miss the buggers….LOL. My youngest is now too quiet (he screamed for an hour because he missed his brothers earlier). When I put my middle guy on the bus, it was a little tough. I don’t know why. I am exhausted, though. I am going to let my sitter hang out with them this afternoon while I nap. :grin1: :grin1: :grin1: :grin1: Think positively that Joel is in my mailbox tonight (I think it is going to be tomorrow, but we can hope). Then, I have to wait for Leslie’s canolli story…whew!

Most of my summer reading this year was magazines like Redbook and Good House Keeping. I read lots of lovely articles about child rearing and marriage. Yeah, I was in the mood for comedy! I did read Tim Sandlin’s ” Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty” and a collection of short stories” The Guy Not Taken” by Jennifer Weiner. Both were interesting. Sandlin has a very readable and warm style. It takes place in the near future about a bunch of folks who were hippies ( or on the other side)in the 60’s and now live in an assisted living facility. And that is all i am sayin’!
I enjoyed it.

Leslie, I have read most of Lisa Gardner’s work and I would categorize her as suspense, not romance. I do enjoy her books.
As far as recent reads, I am currently reading Overexposed. Have recently read She’s No Angel, Janelle’s Borne To Be Wilde, Lori Foster’s Simon Says, Suzanne Brockmann’s Admiral’s Bride, and Susan Mallery’s Tempting. I loved them all.
Enjoyed seeing what everyone else is reading. Have a few ideas of what to pick up next. I didn’t even know Crusie/Mayer’s next book was out.

I have been trying to get my TBR pile down….but it grows everytime I go to the store. I’ve read about 12 Blazes in the past month(including Stripped and Overexposed
). I finished Perfect Stranger and Beyond a Shadow by Alison Kent, Playing with Fire by Gena Showalter, Scent of Darkness by Christina Dodd, 6 Rainer Drive and 74 Seaside Avenue by Debbie Macomber, Sealed with a Kiss, and re-read Born to be Wilde.

Hey everybody…today begins the day of less free time for me…but I always find time to read…we had the first day of teacher orientation and then the kids move into the dorms…
Leslie, it is funny you should ask about what we have been reading…I have a long list…I finished Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series…they are wonderful books you should check em out…Carly’s Body Heat…I will take any excuse to talk about this book over and over again…it is
…if you guys haven’t read it yet, check it out…I guarantee you will need something to cool you down…I have been reading multiple books at once (four/five) just so I can reach my goal of completing my TBR list before school begins and before the new ones I just ordered come in…Right now, I am reading Mary Higgins Clark’s No Place Like Home…finished James Patterson’s Beach Road and Cross…Starting Robyn Carr’s Grace Valley series, a spin off from Virgin River…Cara Summers’ The Defender, Jackie Merritt’s Montana Passion and many more…All the books I have read or am reading are all awesome reads…I would like to push Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series though…I loved them so much…they are well written in my opinion and they plot is a very good one…you guys should check them out when you get a chance…
BTW, I am still on cloud 29 about the fact that I am getting autographed copies of books from each of the plot :monkey :monkey :monkey :monkey….I can’t wait until my books get here…
Janelle, you are the first author ever whose books I am tempted to read out of order…but I am trying to be strong…those Wilde’s are really tugging at me though…
Julie I ordered one of your Marisela books…I can’t wait to meet her…I love characters like that and it is a shame that her story is ending…let me know if harassing the publishers will help to get her back on the racks…
Leslie, the town of Trouble is calling me too and I don’t know what I am going to do, when I find myself reading the stories in that town instead of planning Spanish and Algebra lesson plans…I guess I just might have to get in some kind of trouble…lol…yeah, I know that’s corny, but I never said that I was a comedian right…just a poet who loves to read…
I hope the day is going very well for everyone…talk to you all soon…
Today has been a really good day…

Hello to Vero from Germany! Thanks so much for joining us!
And I am really appreciating all of these recommendations. I forgot to mention a book I read earlier in the summer, called A Widow of the South. A historical fiction. Very interesting read if you’re into Civil War history at all. (not a romance, btw, but based on a true story.)
Comment
Curious–anybody here a “re-reader”? I have been going through boxes of books that I haven’t seen in a looooong time. They were probably in my attic in my old house, now they’re in my office and I am weeding stuff out. Anyway, I stumbled across a few old-time favorites from my only-Historicals romance reading days. I’m going to go on a nostalgic re-read glom, starting with Laurie McBain, whose books Tears of Gold, Wild Bells To The Wild Sky, and As The Splendor Falls are probably three of my all-time-favorite romance novelas.

Leslie, I do re-read but only if I don’t have something new. I have read The Bachelor a few times, Shanna by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, and Wishes by Jude Deveraux many times because they are my favorite’s. Every now and then, I re-read on accident…lol I start a book only to realize I’ve already read it

I just finished nora Roberts’ High Noon, and i loved it the suspense and twists and turns had me turning the pages.
Before that I read Marley and Me: Life and Love with the Worlds Worst Dog– if your the owner of a lab or just a dog lover this book will have you laughing and crying at the same time. Leslie I just started reading Overexposed and I can’t wait to get home from work to read more!!

Not much of a re-reader here Leslie.
I barely have enough time to read them once.
I do have a favorites saved shelf that maybe when retired,
I’ll read again.
Comment
Leslie, I am a re-reader to the max…that is why I buy books…when I invest my money, I don’t do it so that I can read the book only once, I read, re-read and re-read again…Tina, I was about 14 or 15 when I first read Shanna…I have read it about 5 or 6 times…I have re-read wishes several times too…I just went through a re-reading phase with Johanna Lindsey and I am about to re-read the Calder stories by Janet Dailey…Another book that I have re-read several times is A Knight in Shining Armor by Devereaux…that book was the first one I had ever read by her, which caused me to fall in love with her books and the Montgomery clan…I am a big Barbara Delinsky fan as well and I have re-read her book called Facets so many times, I can’t even count them…it has gotten to the point where I can pretty much tell you the entire story now by just looking at the cover….when that I happens, I give myself several years before I even think to open it again…the Jackie Merritt book I just finished, Montana Passion, was a re-read for me as well…
On another note, I am going to recommend some non-romance books that I read this summer that were really good…
The Memory Keepers Daughter (the author’s name escapes me right now)
Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns: Khaled Hosseini
Snowflower and the Secret Fan: Lisa See
Sisters: Danielle Steele (sorry, this was a romance, but not like Blaze. I loved her old stuff, but stopped reading some of her new stuff, and this book is causing me to go back and re-read some of her older stuff and taking a look at her more recent books…)
Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas and Sam’s Letters for Jennifer: James Patterson
I loved these books…can you tell that my reading taste is varied…I have been reading mostly romance lately because I needed a little romance in my life…I know, that’s pathetic, but if one doesn’t have it, one has to live vicariously through others or the printed word, no?
Julie, you mentioned reading young adult books…I have read several, and there are several that stuck out to me…
Speak (can’t remember the author’s name…I am a bad girl…I think it starts with L though…could be wrong) This books is primarily for young girls and I believe it should be read with a parent or another adult that they trust, so that they can discuss the material they read openly and honestly…I feel that this world has changed too much to try to shield our youth from its harsh realities, especially when they are inundated with images of demoralization, rape, abuse, bullying and such through the media…I will get off my soapbox now…sorry, I got sidetracked…can you guys tell that I am getting in school mode?
Downsiders by Avi. This book is a wonderful story about difference, acceptance and tolerance…
Both these books speak to a lot of things that young adults live daily in society as a whole or individually, albeit not necessarily personally…
Peace and love,
