Jungle Madness Winner…and Father’s Day post
Julie Icon

Congratulations to Kim Wilson, comment #2 who has won this week’s prize! Please send me an email: julie @ julieleto . com (no spaces) with your snail mail address so I can get the books and chocolate to you!

Now, for Father’s Day…last year, each of the Plotmonkeys posted pictures of their dads in our tribute to the men who have been such a great influence in our lives. This year, I’m inviting everyone to post a memory of something you shared with your father…something special, something ordinary…something that brings a smile to your face when you think of your father.

I have so many I could share…but just yesterday, I was in Borders looking through the movie section when I found a collection of Errol Flynn movies. Memories flooded back. I remember sitting on the couch with my dad and watching Errol Flynn shine up the screen as Captain Blood so vividly. We watched him as Robin Hood. As The Sea Hawk. In Elizabeth and Essex. Great films, all. But the best part was sharing time with my father. I have three brothers and none of them shared the same film tastes as me and my dad. In fact, I don’t remember my brothers ever watching much television. That was my domain. And my dad. And no doubt, these movies greatly influenced my love for the action genre. There’s a little Errol in most of my heroes, I think. (And my heroines, LOL!)

This weekend, he’s in Yellowstone with my mother and my nephew, so I know he won’t see this…but thanks for the memories, dad! Love you!

Julie Leto

JulieBy all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold nearly thirty books to three publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her husband, daughter, spoiled dachshund, enormous guinea pig and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

My dad was such a wonderful man. I remember how hard he worked and yet still had time for the family.

One of my favorite memories is the random Sunday’s that he would wake us up at the crack of dawn to go to Fort DeSoto. We never knew when this would happen but those Sunday’s we didn’t go to church but put on our bathing suits, grabbed the cover ups, toys, games and of course food.

Dad would cook breakfast on the grills at the beach and then the family would play games, take walks by the water, laughing and talking about nothing and everything at the same time.

Lunch would be simple. Sandwiches, chips and coke. We really weren’t allowed to drink much soda back then but on that day we could have all we wanted.

Late in the afternoon the ice cream maker would come out. This was not the kind that we have now. Oh no. This was the old fashion one that everyone took turns turning the crank. It was some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had. Maybe it was the beach. Maybe it was the family. Maybe it was just because my dad took the time to take the family away for the day and spend time together.

I hope you bought the set- I did with my 40% off coupon!! LOL Great minds and all that.

My father was a big softy. When it came to movies he was a Disney guy all the way. Way back when he had taken my friends and I to see Cougar Country and somehow it became our movie. Along with Born Free. Never missed them.

I miss him. Thankfully, I have hubby to spoil on father’s day so it isn’t so hard. This day is actually worse than his B’day for some reason.

I have one of those charm bracelets that you can put the little slider charms on (not the dangling kind). Shortly after he died I found one that said Cougar Country. I think it was one of the signs he was watching over me. There have been others. But this one I get to wear daily.

Enjoy Dad’s Day everyone- including any single mom’s out there!!

Yey, Kim! My favorite memory of my dad…is that after I had my first, he turned to my mom and said to her, “It’s tough having kids” (yeah, I am the youngest, I have three older brothers, so one is a walk in the park). My three boys wear him out! LOL! Thank you, Dad for all of your hard work!

Every summer, between planting and harvest of the cotton crop, my dad would take me, my sister, and brother to the mountains of New Mexico. We had this remote location in a national forest near the Colorado border. We actually had to go into Colorado and come back into New Mexico to get there. It was the best. There was never anyone else there! The best part – port-o-potties! My sister and I would go anyway, but it did make it easier to swallow.

Sometimes it was a bigger trip and my Mom would go, but those weren’t the same as the bonding we did with my dad while fishing up and down that stretch of river we camped at.

I went back several years ago and it wasn’t the same. Other’s had found our “secret” place, so it was crowded.

I have so many great memories of my Dad! Going skating at the local rink and when it when it was “couples only” we would skate together because my Mom could not skate. My family had a water ice truck and every night in the summer me and my Dad would go around the neighborhood selling water ice. He was a great man who would make you smile even if you were having a bad day. He passed away 5 years ago and I would do anything to have him back.

I have been fortunate enough to have two wonderful fathers, my own and my stepdad. I lost my father this year to lung cancer. So today has been really hard for me but the one thing that I wanted to do was make sure that my stepdad knew how much he was loved and how important he was in my life. How I understood that he loved me uncontionally as his own.

There are so many good memories of my father but there is one special one. After he and my mom divorced and he would get me & my sister on the weekends, he always brought out his guitar and sang, “How Much Is That Doggie In The Window.”

Even years later after I was grown and had children of my own, I would say, “Daddy sing my song.” He instantly knew what I was talking about.

I can remember before I had my son that I told him if anything ever happen to him, the only thing that I wanted was his guitar because of those memories.

On the day that my son was born, he said, “Tina, I’m sorry but I can’t leave you the guitar.” I didn’t understand until he told me that he was giving it to his first born grandson.

That was fine with me. That guitar was passed down through all his brothers and he being the youngest at 74 when he passed this year. I was so proud of my son when a few years ago, he took the guitar to my dad and ask him to sign it and date it. Now it has been glossed over and will be passed down for generations to come.

I just hope that all you ladies that still have your fathers or someone as special as my stepdad, let them know today just what they mean to you. They don’t stay with you forever and you’ll never know how much they are missed and how much they mean until they are gone.

:cheer: Congratulations Kim. Enjoy all those books & the See’s candy. Yum! :present:
Oh memories, a whole bunch are crowding in on me! Watching football games with Dad on TV, picnics in the summer when he would fish, just being outdoors, camping, going after our Christmas tree in the snow, how much my two daughters loved their Pa, how he laughed at Tom & Jerry cartoons (his favorites), how much I have missed him since he passed away in 1980, to young. We were blessed to have him while we did.
    Thanks for the memories. :love2:

Congrats Kim!!! I have so many awesome memories of my dad. We are still so close even today. I still remember his taking me fishing in the summer(my brother and sister never liked it). We went on so many camping trips as a family I think I could still put the tent up in my sleep. He also taught all of us how to cook at a pretty young age. I loved to be in the kitchen with my dad and my mom when they fixed dinner. My mom died when I was 12 so he had to be mom and dad most of my life and has pulled it off without any problem. One of the sweetest things he does now is calls me on my birthday every year to tell me about the day I was born…he also calls my brother and sister on their days too.

I am signing in late, but I just wanted to share about my dad, too. My dad is now 80 and has Alzheimers’. It is very hard to see him like this he was always such an intelligent man, despite having to quit school in 7th grade (the depression).

One of my favorite memories of him is him and I going to Alamo and Overton to sell for our store. We would get up super early and drive and set up at a local senior center. In Overton we would always stop at the Rooster for breakfast. On those days he treated me just like a little adult. Man I only wish we coul’ve had more of those days. They seemed few and far between.
