Of BEA and Teen Heartthrobs
Carly Icon

I was going to wait until late Tuesday night to post because we were supposed to have a visit from Bailey’s brother Oscar and his mom and dad. Unfortunately the visit never happened because they had an accident on their way over but fortunately everyone is fine! Hopefully we’ll reschedule. Which means I need a new blog idea for today.

SINCE TODAY IS ALMOST OVER, HERE IS THE ACTUAL PIC OF ROBBY BENSON FROM BEA – read on for more …

So I have a few things that are on my mind:

BEA – this weekend I went to Bookseller’s Expo at the Javits Center in NYC where I had two signings of close to 200 advanced reading copies of SEALED WITH A KISS. (Hurray!) It’s always fun hearing from booksellers and meeting readers. It’s also fun to meet up with other authors. I was interviewed for RomanceNovelTV.com by none other than bestselling author Eloisa James (that’s her with me below.) I’ll let you know when that’s live for you to see!

And I met the fun and fantastic Christina Dodd. I met up with Shannon Aviles, an internet marketing specialist I am working with, and I had a meeting but missed Sara Reyes from Fresh Fiction. I spent the weekend with my youngest daughter because if you remember, last year I took my oldest daughter to BEA in Washington DC. So Jen and I had a lot of fun, mother daughter bonding time, food and laughs. She got to see what conferences are all about and other than a brief moment when she left her purse on one end of Javits and we had to hike all the way back there from the other end (hence the reason I missed Sara Reyes) then all went well!

As usual, Harlequin has a fantastic, gorgeous, huge booth and there was a huge backlit blow up of SEALED WITH A KISS. I signed there and the next day at what’s called the traditional signing and I was next to the old heart throb Robby Benson.

If you are my age, you will remember Robby Benson. If you aren’t, you won’t. Marleah Stout (Harlequin) and I remembered. Michelle Renaud (also Harlequin) didn’t. But we took a photo with him and when Marleah sends it to me, I’ll post it! In the meantime here is a then and now photo of him for you to marvel at. I know I did!

CROSS MY HEART – is out June 26th. How many times, how many ways, can I say it? Check back for my Friday contest linked to the release!

Now back to teenage heart throbs. (why not?) Mine was David Cassidy. (Man this is mortifying!)

If you absolutely can only pick one, who was yours?

Carly

CarlyCarly Phillips would like to take 100% credit for all her stories but the truth is, Carly’s strength is writing family, emotion, funky elderly people and animals. She couldn’t plot her way out of a paper bag, which is why she smartly found her plotmonkey pals early on in her writing career. Thanks to their support, Carly is now a NYT Bestselling author of 23 plus novels. Because writing doesn’t keep her busy enough, Carly is also a wife, a mother of one preteen and one teenage daughter, the primary care giver of her soft coated Wheaten terrier and an expert carpool mom.

Glad you had a fabulous time Carly! Maybe next year you can do the Lori Foster event, hmmm? One of the ladies here got some great news about her writing – it’s so exciting!

One hottie??? Just one??? You don’t know us too well. (Okay, maybe you do!) I can’t decide between Rob Lowe or Jon Bon Jovi, so there. Even now, they both still look great.

    Shaun Cassidy.

::sigh:: He was my pre-teenage heartthrob. After that, there were too many to count.

Can I just say that Robby Benson looks HOT? Now? He never did much for me before, though he royally (ha!) won me over when he was the voice of the Beast in Beauty and the Beast.

The Lori Foster event always sounds so great …

Sean Cassidy – YUM. See, Julie? We were soul sisters even back then! :thankyou:

But when I saw Robby Benson at BEA I was SHOCKED because it showed me how OLD I really am! :wtf:

And yes I’m with Julie. I guess I meant preteen heartthrob because I also had and have too many to count after!

Robby Benson never did it for me either then. But I did like that movie Ice Castles, LOL!

Ummmm…..I’m dying here….:happy2: have you looked really close at that old picture of Robby Bensen? Like, maybe scroll back up and stop when the picture is half way up his chest! 8O

Now that I’ve gotten past the “obstacle delusion” I did like Robby Bensen back then and he looks great now! But Andy Gibb was my absolute favorite! Don’t ya hate it when everyone else looking older tempts you into feeling like maybe, just maybe, you’re getting older too?

I loved John Stamos(in his Blackie days). My older sister(who loved Shaun Cassidy) and I would pretend we were married to our main loves when we played dolls. Had pictures all over our walls. We even had the Shaun Cassidy shirts, jeans, and jackets(I liked Shaun, but John was my fav). I have to say that John Stamos has only gotten hotter as the years have passed!!! I did like Robby Benson in Ice Castles, but loved him as the beast in Beauty and the Beast too.

Hmmmm, my crush growing up was on John Taylor of Duran Duran. LOL! Yes, I was like 14 when they first came out and HAD to see them in concert. My room was wall to wall posters of him.

Glad you had fun with your daughter. I am sure they both feel special having such a cool mom to share all these neat memories with. :D

Tina, I actually think it’s his toes! I was laughing so hard when I first saw it that I had to blow it up and check it out! My first thought was, Carly wouldn’t post a picture like that…Janelle, maybe, but not Carly! :happy2: Kidding, Janelle, although I am still waiting for the Joel shot with his quote.

Anyway…my second thought was, wait a minute…how old was he when that picture was taken? That can’t be what it looks like! I don’t know why it struct me as so funny – I think it was because I was so caught off guard – but I laughed until I had tears. I guess I’m easily amused!

First of all, I realized, yesterday I got all hung up on the canolli talk to wish Tina a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Okay, back to teenage heartthrobs…okay, I am a child of the 80s. Let me just say, I was partial to the bad boy rockers…like Sting and Simon Le Bon (from Duran Duran). A friend of mine actually knows the whole band, now and she said that John is HOT and that all of them have aged well (okay, except for one, but he’s remaining nameless!)! I also thought that Jon Bon Jovi was hot. I wasn’t so much into the ‘safe boys’, probably why I married a CPA…they are more of the marrying type (I liked the bad boys, much more interesting…probably why I love Janelle’s bad boys in her books!).

My oldest is back to school, but they just changed the final date of school (moved it up). Geez, now I have more stuff to fill my final days of school….yikes!

I wasn’t into Robby then, but wow, he’s aged well!!

Being a big fan of racing home from school to watch The Monkees, I also really had a thing for an older man…Davy Jones! I actually was at Epcot a few years back during the spring flower festival, and he was performing. My kids thought I was out of my ever-loving mind the way I screamed and danced.

I had an anniversary yesterday – 13 years – and hubby was off so I didn’t make it to the jungle to post. I stopped by early yesterday morning and read it quickly but didn’t have time to post. So, here’s my late thoughts…

First off, Happy Late Birthday, Tina! :cake: Hope it’s sunny today and a better start than yesterday!

Second, since it was my anniversary, I was in a mushy mood and had thought about the fact that Bruce could probably offer some incentive that none of the rest of us could. Glad to know you stopped by, Bruce!

However, the whole canoli things is a real eeewwwwww moment for me because my son works in a restaurant and guess what one of his jobs is? Making the canoli!

Finally, did you make the 15 pages yesterday and do we get a page count today?!? You can do it!!!:cheer:

With my morbid curiosity I’ve blown it up as large as I can get it in Corel. Guys sit different than girls, at least hubby does. If he’s on his knees like that he curls his toes under and uses them for support. I lay my feet flat because it hurts my toes to be all bent under.

However, thank God it’s NOT what I initially thought in my blurry vision this morning!! :happy2:

 Lorenzo Lamas was mine. I am only 26, so I watched Renegade all the time. That long hair and biker leather really got me.

The funny thing is that now I think he is just about the cheesiest man around. He doesn’t appeal to me at all anymore.

Of course most of the men who I thought attractive in my teenage years don’t seem that way anymore. Christian Slater, for one.

Ones I still find hot… Brad Pitt & Johnny Depp.

You guys are too funny! Only one is hard – and I’d have to pick someone you all probably don’t know – Vince Van Patten. He was a professional tennis player (and I played tennis).

But so many of you picked Shaun Cassidy and John Stamos (both of who I loved too) that I have to tell you – Patrick (Shaun’s younger brother) Cassidy’s son is on my son’s baseball team and Shaun has been out several times to watch the games. OMG – the first time we (the moms) saw him we wanted to die. However, I have to say he hasn’t aged as well as Robby Benson.

And about two months ago I was lucky enough to be eating lunch at a table right next to John Stamos! He still looks pretty good and was very, very nice to everyone who came up to the table to talk to him. He’s taller in person than I thought he would be.

Oh my here’s where being old makes this blog strange to most I guess.

Does anyone remember Dark Shadows daytime tv soap.

Well there was this actor David Selby. I thought he was someting.

I guess I saw thru the beard. :happy2: He was also on Flamingo Road,

Falcon Crest and Soldiers of Fortune Inc.:happy2::happy2:

Okay a heart throb for me but I was older and they were too young for me

Hmmm? Richard Gere pick any movie. Brad Pitt was striking in Troy.

He could play my archilles anytime. Mel Gibson was nicely bulked up in

Braveheart. Don’t want to forget Paul Newman and those gorgeous baby

blues. Oh my I had better get back to work. Whew! It surprised me

    no one mentioned Tom Cruise.

Does Tiger Beat still exist? I remember my mom never let me buy it, but I always bought it when they had Duran Duran (I was a Duranimal, you know).

Okay, Tom Cruise (around the time of COCKTAIL) and Paul Newman…I remember, the pool movie and my mom and I drooling over different males….Brad Pitt (pre-weirdness, too)….and I totally agree with Johnny Depp during the 21 Street Days…I lived about 4 hours away from Vancouver BC and I used to dream of going up there (where they filmed it) and meeting him….he was a HOTTIE!

Bo Duke. (I wasn’t a teenager though; I fell in love YOUNG–probably 6.) I still think John Schnieder is hot.

I don’t remember the ‘celebrities’ of who I crushed on as a teenager. Probably Patrick Swayze–Dirty Dancing was big for some years. Eeek, Tom Cruise would make the list for Top Gun. And when I graduated high school, I had a huge crush on Kevin Costner.

No one near my age. That’s…terrifying. *LOL*

I don’t remember Robbie Benson; but I do recall he played in Ode to Billie Joe, my favorite novel when I was a teenager. (Book is better than the movie, I think.)

Yummmmmm! :love2: I made everybody be quiet so I could adore in peace! (Of course my mom thought I was obnoxious. My BF wasn’t too impressed either.)

Although, I must say Sean Connery in his older years was quite the sexy man. So, the best thing ever was for my two “lusts” to come together in “The Presidio”. :thankyou: I was in heaven.

I think I have a new image for my next hero…

You know, I think I missed the whole “teen heart-throb” thing when I was a teen. I liked Harrison Ford, who was WAY too old for me. I had Indiana Jones pinned up in my locker.

However, I appear to be catching up now. I’m way too into Jason Dohring, who played Logan Echolls on Veronica Mars, and, sadly, Timothy McVeigh in a made-for-TV movie.

I went to college with Robbie Benson’s daughter, so he’s definitely more on the “dad” side of things to me.

Patrick wayne was a total hottie. I also loved Dark Shadows. Do you remember the Dark Shadows movie. My stepsister, Terri, jumped up and screamed during the movie.

Lynn, I totally forgot about the Coors commercials! I have always loved Mark Harmon and will even tape Idol so I don’t have to miss NCIS. Do you remember when he was in three episodes of Moonlighting playing Maddie’s ex-boyfriend, the astronaut? Oh, my. When he dances with her to the Frank Sinatra song….it’s a romance author’s Heaven!!!

Boy, I guess I’m a bit older than everybody here. My first crushes were two of the Beatles: Paul McCartney and George Harrison. I also liked Justin Hayward the lead singer of Moody Blues. Followed by Robert Redford and Omar Shariff(Dr Zhivago). Christopher Reeves in Superman. Guess I could go on and on..
