Since we’re talking about men…
Julie Icon

Carly and I must have been on the same wavelength when we decided what our blog topics were going to be about, though I have to admit my focus is a little different. But it’s still talking about sexy men…so hey, we’re all in, right?

Thing is…I want to talk about sexy men who AREN’T necessarily gorgeous.

It’s a strange, but wonderful phenomena, I think–men who can turn you on in a way that is unexpected and even unexplainable. There’s just something about these guys that oozes sexuality. Not all women swoon for these guys, either, which gives them a special quality that universally worshipped heart-throbs like Brad Pitt and George Clooney simply do not have.

I’ve always been one to fall for the sexier-than-sin, non-traditional guy. I remember seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time and thinking, wow, that Tim Curry guy is hot–and he’s playing a transvestite! Imagine what he’d be like playing it straight. Luckily for me, I got to find out, because at the birth of MTV, they played videos for Mr. Curry singing and swiveling his hips to such sensual anthems as “I Do The Rock” and “Paradise Garage.”

Mercy!

And as he’s aged, he’s only gotten sexier. Even as he’s gained weight, the man has a voice that can melt steel and eyes that reflect so much decadence, they should be made of chocolate.

::sigh::

And then there’s Michael Keaton. I remember, also, seeing him in the original Batman movie and falling deeply and desperately in love. I kept telling myself–this is MICHAEL KEATON. This is Beetlejuice, for Pete’s sake. Didn’t matter. In my opinion, he set the standard. He captured the essence of Bruce Wayne–the sensual, tortured soul–and projected it on the screen in ways that had me entertaining sexy daydreams for months. If not longer.

And of course, the king of all sexy-men-who-aren’t-classically-goodlooking…the incomparable Alan Rickman. Cause here’s the deal, ladies…if Alan Rickman had not been cast as Severus Snape, NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would think this character has a streak of goodness in him that will come out in the last Harry Potter book. Jo Rowling has said over and over that Snape is BAD, but her legions of fans refuse to believe her. It’s because of Alan Rickman, I’m convinced. The Alan Rickman Effect. We even cheered his nasty Sheriff of Nottingham because, hell, he’s Alan Rickman. And as my good friend Diana is wont to say–everything is better with Alan Rickman.

A while back, I participated in a discussion about this topic on an email list I’m on (if any Sucias are out there–I will be back soon!) and they came up with a delicious list of men who while not classically handsome, could really turn on the heat. Now it’s your turn…

Julie Leto

JulieBy all reports, Julie Leto was a sweet child once, somewhat shy, preferring to play quietly in her room making up stories. However, being raised with three brothers in a loud, primarily Italian household did have its influences and Julie discovered her inner tough girl. That’s probably why most of her heroines kick serious butt. Writing sassy heroines has worked out, as she’s sold over forty books to four publishers featuring strong, confident women. Julie lives in Florida with her daughter, a spoiled dachshund, a haughty lynx-point Siamese and a wide range of relatives all within driving distance.

Alan Rickman is on a lot of people’s lists. I kinda agree – loved him in “Die Hard”, “Love Actually” and “Robin Hood”.

My choice would be John Malkovich. He was such a sexy, sinister guy in “Dangerous Liaisons”, and his voice is seductively enticing.

Bill Murray. I don’t know if it’s his crazy sense of humor, but I really dug him in “Ghostbusters”.

Adam Sandler in “The Wedding Singer”. He played a much more sincere and romantic character, and I fell hard.

    I’m sure I’m forgetting someone here….

Alan has to be at the top of the list. I am also one of those who thinks Snape isn’t all he has been made out to be and in the end we will be vindicated. I hope.

I really will have to sit and think about this for awhile. My brain is not cooperating. I think the cold has frozen it.:wallbash:

Too weird, just this week I was looking up pictures of a guy that I think is really sexy and trying to figure out what it was about him that made me think so. I don’t even remember his name, but he played the new age guy in Northern Exposure and the Minister in Raising Hellen. I think he dates Bo Derick.

I guess he would be classified as good looking, but his look changes in everything he’s in and he still has that certain something that just makes me fall for him no matter what role he’s playing. Hmmm…back to google for a name and pics!

I love this topic because my all-time heartthrob while growing up fits into this category. STEVEN TYLER from Aerosmith! He starred in many an adolescent fantasy, and a few adult ones, as well. There is just something about him that I think is ultra-hot. I recently saw him in concert and he’s still got it. He’s ugly as sin if you just look at his features. But the way he moves, and sings, and well, he’s just sizzling!!!

Kim, I almost put Steve Tyler on my list! He’s just a walking, talking sex god.

John Corbett is throwing me–I see him as more classically good looking. I think he’s starring in the Nora movie this week–Montana Sky on Lifetime. It was on Monday night, I think, but will probably rerun on Saturday. But he does change his look and is kind of goofy…but hot. LOVED him in Raising Helen.

BTW, in last week’s Nora movie–Angel Falls–the hero was played by Johnathon Schaech, who also played Jimmy (the jerk who dumped Liv Tyler) in That Thing You Do. I love that movie. He wasn’t great in Angel Falls, unfortunately…but he didn’t get enough good lines, IMO. The movie over all was great…Heather Locklear was fabulous, though. He’s classically good looking, of course, but well, I had to mention it!

This has gotten me to thinkin’ this morning and I remembered an article that Country Weekly did on this subject. Of course, I picked it up because Keith Urban was the person they were using as the example but I kept it because it was so interesting.

Researchers at the University of Tampa actually did a study on charismatic people trying to figure out what they had that others don’t. They believed it “dreives from a chemical transmitted through the sense of smell.” Well, I’ve never smelled Keith or John Corbett but I sure as hell would like to!!!

I think Country Weekly was more accurte: “Charisma is the ‘it,’ the X-factor that makes you want to know all about someone even if you don’t know why.” They listed FDR, Elvis, James Dean and Ronald Reagan as others who had “it,” whatever “it” is. Just some useless info for the day.

Wow, definitely count me in on Alan Rickman–I adore him! I was so excited to see he was cast as Judge Turpin in Tim Burton’s movie version of Sweeney Todd!

And I am also with you on Tim Curry, Julie! Seeing him in person in Spamalot was a huge thrill.

Kennneth Branaugh does it for me. He’s boyishly cute–not superstar handsome–but wow, when he speaks, I just melt.

I also love Dennis Leary. Another kind of boyishly cute, but there’s something very sexy about him, especially in movies like The Ref and in his show Rescue Me. (Maybe it’s because he’s such a dog…lol!)

Leslie, seeing Spamalot this weekend definitely inspired this post. Tim Curry, of course, wasn’t playing the role (oh, for a trip to London!) but the actor who played him had this one line–one brief moment–that had Tim Curry written all over it. Even my 15 year old nephew, who loves Curry from the Muppet Treasure Island, LOL, noticed! In fact, it was funny because all the kids knew him from that role except my daughter, who had no idea what we were talking about. I suppose I must now rent Muppet Treasure Island!

Have to agree on Keaton and Rickman, Julie, and would add Kevin Kline (He was so sexy in French Kiss…) and Victor Garber, oh, and Gary Oldman. Maybe it’s more the parts they play, but I love Spy Daddy more than Michael Vartan, and for that matter, Anthony Stewart Head (Giles in Buffy). All hot, I think. Nice to give these less talked about guys some airtime, yes. ;)

Okay, who is now playing the music from That Thing You Do in their head? I know I am! Love, adore that movie! One of my all-time favorites. And yes Guy…oh, Guy. ::swoon::

Kevin Kline in French Kiss was delicious (who else must drink a bold red wine after watching that scene where he teaches Meg Ryan about the flavors?)…and a big whopping thumps up to Nicholas Cage, too! Yes, he’s weird…but he can be oh-so-sexy when he wants to be. It’s the eyes.

Sherry- Actually, I like Larry myself. Now he’s married and they just had a baby. The thought of him reproducing just cracks me up. I want to be that kid with him as a dad!! I love a good sense of humor and he definately has one.

I like Billy Bob Thornton. So I fall into the weird catagory too.

Tim cury is definately on my list.

I have a thing for musicians so yes, Steve Perry was on there. The new lead for Journey, Jeff Scott Soto, is awesome. We saw him in concert over the summer, while he was just filling in, and WOW!!! All 6’4″ of him and can he move and sing. Daughter and I were drooling before the show was over. He has brought a life back into the bad that has been sadly lacking since Steve P. left. The Steve that took over for him was so much like him, it was weird going to a show.

The Kenneth Branaugh movie is Dead Again(I think he directed too and he was very hot in that movie). Everyone’s list is so awesome, but I have to add Patrick Stewart and an older Sean Connery (not that he wasn’t great as James Bond, but so much hotter as he aged) as well as agreeing that Nicholas Cage is hot(could watch him in National Treasure everyday..pluse the guy that plays Rilley is too cute, in that nerd kind of way). As for Alan Rickman…all I can say is you have to love what a bad boy he is in his movies.

Katie, you betcha on the Food Network gang. Alton Brown and Ham on the Street because they’re so funny. And the guy from “The Secret Life Of”. Jim O’Connell? Delish!!

And Sherry, the person to get boo’d would probably be me for…gulp…Simon Cowell!

Leslie, WAY yes on Dennis Leary! Even when he’s doing his “I love to smoke” routine and puffing them up like a chimney.

And I have to ask, WHAT is Spamalot? The only time I heard that word was in Monty Python & The Holy Grail during the Knights of the Round Table song, thrown in only because it rhymed with “Camelot”.

Ooh, and add in Judd Nelson and Judge Reinhold. I fell in love with Judd in The Breakfast Club, and Judge as Brad in Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

Leslie got to see it with the original cast! I just saw the traveling troupe and they were fabulous…Robin was hands down my favorite character.
