I watched the previews of the upcoming MIAMI VICE movie starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx and following the preview, NBC reshowed the pilot of the original MIAMI VICE with Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas as Crockett and Tubbs. So who was old enough to have watched the original?
Me me me! It was the 80’s. I was in college, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. I had big hair, big tops, leggings (hey did you know leggings are back for the fall?) and a boyfriend. Now he’s my husband of ::gulp:: 17 years! 22 years together if you count the day we started going out, Valentine’s Day 1984. But I digress. Back to MIAMI VICE.
The question that keeps coming back to me is this: Watching the original, knowing my husband wants to go see the new one, will I miss Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas or will I get lost in the new version? I asked my husband and he said we’ll love the new edition.

I don’t know. Can Colin Farrell top Don Johnson? Can Jamie Foxx replace Phillip Michael Thomas?

If I close my eyes, I’m back in the 80’s. They still come alive for me and Don Johnson is as hot as a man can get.
White jackets, hot colored shirts, scruffy facial hair and BAD BOY written all over him.
I was never a huge Tubbs fan, but I’ve always loved Jamie Foxx, so I think he has a chance … but the rest of the guys? How do you replace Edward James Olmos?

I’m going to have to see the movie.
I’m going to have to report back.
But I’m wondering …
Can a remake be better than an original? What do you think? And not just of Miami Vice?

Hmmm, you know, I have no desire to see this movie. I kinda like Colin Farrell, in small doses…okay, did you see S.W.A.T.???? Yum! – but he just seems so skanky in this movie. Jamie Fox though does look tough and very capable of violence LOL. We’ll see. I’m curious to know your thoughts.

You know, when I wrote this I really thought we’d get to the movie … now I’m sort of like you. I could care less about seeing it, LOL. I did really have fun watching the rerun of the old pilot though.

Okay, so I hate to admit this but, yes, I’m old enough to have watched the original. I was in high school and Don Johnson was IT! But I’m actually really excited about the remake. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Colin Farrell so I’m sure he’ll punch my buttons the way Don Johnson did. I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to go and see it, but hubby and I have little ones and get very little time alone, so we’re going through a kid movie phase (Friday nights we try to pile the family in the car and head off to the movies) Since I have a 3 year old, our viewing possibilities are limited to animation and did I say animation? But I anxiously await Carly’s report back. If it’s good, I may just have to beg my in-laws to watch the kiddies for a few hours.

I was pretty young when Miami Vice was popular (so I had to sneak to watch) but I never did find Don Johnson that attractive. Colin, whew, now there is a good lookin’ man, but scruffy? Not sure I want to see him that scruffy.
I’d put this on my list of “only if the hubby makes me go see it” list of movies to see. Happy Tues ladies.

Kim, Saturday night MUST be date night. I highly recommend it. I’ve done it since the kids were born. Hire someone you trust for a few short hours and get out alone with the hubby. It’s the only time we actually can TALK. And it’s worse as they get older, so its even more important that you get into the habit early!!!!!

This is not one that I’m dying to go see. I may rent it later because it’s easier to stop watching it if your at home instead of paying the money to go to the movies.
What does seem kinda sad to me is all the remakes. Are they really having that hard of a time coming up with something new? Okay, maybe something that already been around but still “Fresh, with a new twist”.
Comment
I loved the original Miami Vice. I may rent the movie but I don’t think I will go see it on the big screen. I just don’t think Colin Farrell will compare as Sonny Crockett. Don Johnson was so hot in that role.

I loved the original and I can’t wait to see this one, too!!

Staying up late to watch Miami Vice in the 80s was the big thing to do in grade school.
My first crush dressed like Don Johnson … sigh and I’m still a sucker for the bad boy look … The movie … I don’t know if it’ll live up … and what about the soundtrack … that may be a whole another issue. But if you go – you have to tell us how it is!

Ok – I admit it – I watched the original. Loved Don Johnson. I will also admit to loving action movies so I have already seen the Colin Farrell/Jamie Fox new movie. It is nothing like the TV show. NOTHING. Except for the names everything has been changed. It was a very dark movie. It was an expensive nap I took. Though Foxx is better than Tubbs and Farrell did have his moments. Sorry – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Miami Vice was a definite ‘Must See’ for me in the 80′s. I absolutely loved Don Johnson as Crockett! I doubt I’ll go to see it but I might rent it.
I don’t think the remakes hold a candle to the original shows.

I was only 14 at the time when the original came out. And of course I watched every week, what 14 year old didn’t love Don Johnson’s character Crockett!!!
I mean, when the Nash Bridges series came out, I HAD to watch that too!
I personally don’t tend to like the remakes of ANYTHING. It seems that when I really like something, no remake can do it justice. I end up picking it apart and comparing it to the original. Nothing against Jamie Foxx or Colin Farrell but I will be skipping this one.

Kim- set up the date nite!! Even though our youngest is now 21, it’s still the only time we get peace and quiet!!
Barbara Jo- thank you! That is what I had heard and decided not to waste the time and money.
I loved the original, especially Edward James, and I just knew this would not measure up to the original. They never do.:soapbox:
Comment
I have to admit, Barbara Jo’s take on the movie is why I don’t want to see it … b/c that’s my feeling from the previews.

Well, first of all, I have to tell you, I was in high school when the original was out. I still remember this…one of my friends HAD to always be home to watch it (she didn’t have a VCR…can you imagine, not having a VCR…okay, I didn’t either, but that is moot), even if there was a dance or some other ‘social’ event. She had this HUGE crush on Don Johnson.
I wasn’t a huge MV fan, although, I did think that PMT was pretty hot. I wouldn’t stay home to watch it, though. I think I was after the ‘bad boys’, also. I married a nice, sweet guy (it’s his birthday
today, so I gotta be nice :), j/k) who is the antithesis of either one of those characters.
Will I see the new one? Maybe on dvd.
On a related topic, we are so booked up, hubby and I haven’t had even a ‘date dinner’ lately. I agree with you, you have to schedule some time, even once a month to have time with just hubby (I have three adorable boys…aged 6, 4 and 19 months). We just started every other week ‘date dinner’ and kinda slacked off last month (we just started our ‘date dinners’ in June, so we aren’t doing so hot). Yeah, you talk about the kids a lot, but it’s nice for us to go out and eat ‘adult food’ that the boys don’t like. Plus, you get to reconnect. It’s really nice…our focus isn’t primarily the boys, but the food and each other. Even if we just went for a walk, that would be nice, too.
Sorry I was way off topic. Have a great day, everyone!

Not so off topic, Katie. Date night for married couples is a really good blog topic. Maybe for next Tuesday

I remember the show………I watched it with my husband and kids………yikes that sure dates me…………..:? But I am not sure that I will rush out and see the new one……….think I might wait for the DVD…………

I know I won’t go see this movie…like Kim, if it’s not animated, then I’m probably not going to see it. My husband doesn’t really like going to the movies, but he likes watching them at home…but then, with the little darling around, he doesn’t get to see many Rated R flicks! (Can’t do it after she goes to bed…she can stay up past both of us, except on school nights…which is also work nights, so we tucker pretty early, too!)
I love the original series. I wasn’t in love with either Crockett or Tubbs, but I loved the series and I adored the music and clothes. The movie looks way too dark and violent for my tastes…as Barbara-Jo pointed out. I’d rather watch re-runs of the original.
Someone mentioned the derth of remakes lately…I feel the same way. It’s not that writers/screenwriters don’t have original ideas–it’s that the suits in Hollywood think that audiences will only flock to that which is familiar. You’d think the flops that were Dukes of Hazzard, Bewitched, etc would teach them a lesson.
Best movie I’ve seen all year is DEVIL WEARS PRADA, which was made from a BOOK. I wish they’d try that a little more often!

I was a big fan of the TV show, too. Like Julie, I wasn’t as attached to the individual characters as I was to the look of the show–the music, the brightness, the speedboats. Just loved it.
I definitely plan to see the movie. I have a long list of ones I want to see. We went to the movies over the weekend with the kids and the little one was too young to see Miami Vice, so we saw Talladega Nights instead. Now, I am not a Will Farrell fan, but I have to say that movie really did crack me up.

Talledega Nights – now that is one I am dying to see.

I’m definitely old enough to have watched the old one; I loved Don Johnson.

Great topic Caryl,
My husabnd was telling me yesterday that he downloaded the Miami Vice pilot to his Ipod! Yes he is a nerd!!!!!!!
totally not fair!
He was all excited because he got to watch it at work yesterday. Oh and then he let me know he downloaded Pirates the Curse of the Black Pearl.
I definitely need to get an Ipod!

Carly,
I could help you write it next week (LOL, ROTFL!!!!:happy2:)

I loved the ORIGINAL Miami Vice and Don was a hottie

I definitely have to see Talledega Nights! I love NASCAR and I like to laugh and I’m thinking the movie will be a really great spoof. Date night sounds WONDERFUL. I’m hoping once August passes (new book out and tons of stuff to do and I’m now in deadline hell on top of that) we’ll give it a shot. I like to dance, so I’m hoping I can talk him into it. Then again, I’m so tired most of the time, a movie sounds great. I love those big soft pretzels!

Loved the original Miami Vice. The music was and still is awesome.:love2:
Phil Collins, Glenn Frye (I know I butchered the spelling of their names) Carly you need to add spell check as an option.:happy2:
I just don’t think I could see the new movie without comparing it to Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas. By the way I watched Miami Vice back in the 80′s because of Don, fast cars , fast boats and great music.(plus my new hubby back then watched the show)
Yes, Julie I know the leggings and mini skirts are back in style. I just bought my 15 year old daughter black laggings and a black Levi minisirt for back to school. Kinda neat how fashions keep going round in cirlcles.:doggie:

Oh Boy do I remember the original Miami Vice. Don Johnson was HOT!!
You got to love Bad Boys in great cars!!

To people who remember the original Miami Vice I don’t think the remake will stack up.

I wanted to let you know that there is a great ad in this weeks issue (August 7th issue) on page 24 for your new book Cross My Heart and also Summer Lovin. It’s a 1/2 page full color add and really looks great.
Lot’s of people here at HSN get this mag. to see fashion trends. So, needless to say I had to let them know that this was a great book as well as everything else that you write.
I was just excited when I saw it and although you may already know about it just in case you didn’t.
Comment
Thanks, Vicki! Which mag did you see? I know there were ads in Life and Style, OK, and People Style Issue.

I don’t think I want to see the movie but I do like Jamie Foxx–he’s hot!! I saw Colin Farrell on The View recently & they kept having to bleep him!! The original Miami Vice was never a must to watch with me but I did like it. Action movies are not my cup of tea. I agree with lots of other people I’m getting tired of remakes–lets do some original material. For all the millions of dollars spent on movies there are not that many that I will rush out to see & I love movies. One of my friends went with me to see The Devil Wears Prada when we were having our heat wave–the theater was air-conditioned!! Good movie, Meryl Streep was very good & Anne Hathaway was also. The remakes are rarely (very rarely) ever as good as the original. Often when I am reading I think this book would make a good movie.

opps I was so excited about seeing it that I forgot to say the mag.
It was in OK and trust me it was beautiful. People were talking about seeing it.

Carly definetly go see Talledega Nights, it is too funny to even sit through. So be prepared to laugh. I was not to thrilled to see this but my honey really wanted to, so we went and I am glad we went. I don’t I will see Miami Vice, I was too young to even remember the show, but I do recognize the name since my mom loved the show.

However im not going to run out to the movies with my gift certificate to watch Miami Vice. Dont want anyone to see me sleep thru it… I rather see that cute comedy, Devil wears prada. Im not much on remake films. I saw Dukes of Hazard, in fact i hit the fast forward button several times since i rented it. I never saw Bewitched, and dont plan on it. I thought it was a cute pilot show but not for a movie.
Sorry but off topic…has anyone seen Da Vinci Code? Is that a good movie to watch in theaters or wait to dvd comes out? My friends told me dont bother it wasnt like the book. Of course some movies arent going to be exactly like the book, its hollywood style.
