Saturday Chit-Chat

It’s Saturday and time for us to chit-chat in response to a question asked by one of our blog readers. Remember, if you have a question or a topic you’d like us to explore, send an email to Carly at carly@carlyphillips.com.

Gigi asked:

If you could have one of your books turned into a movie which book or series of books would it be? On that same line of thought….has any of the plotmonkeys ever sold a book for a screenplay?

CP: I need to make this first one a two parter of my own. The series of books most readers mention as wanting to have it turned into a movie is the Chandler Brothers series, THE BACHELOR, THE PLAYBOY and THE HEARTBREAKER. As for me, I think those would make for a fun movie, but I also think CROSS MY HEART, coming up in August and it’s sequel SEALED WITH A KISS combined tell really compelling stories/drama! I’ve never sold a book or a movie, unfortunately.

LK: I would love to see a movie made out of my first single title, KILLING TIME. It is still one of my all-time favorite books and Mick Winchester is probably in my top 3 favorite heroes. I loved writing the reality TV stories and I just think a movie about a murder on the set of a reality TV show could be lots of fun.

And while I never sold a book for a screenplay, I did actually option a *real* reality TV show based on my book MAKE ME OVER. A production company liked the concept of the reality show in that book, asked me to develop it into a real TV show, and optioned it for a year while they shopped it around Hollywood. It never sold, but it was kind of fun to dip my toes into that side of the business.

JD: I’ve never sold a book for a screenplay, but I think it would be fun to see my Harlequin Blaze, HEAT WAVES made into a movie. It was such a fun book to write, with a sexy radio DJ plot to it. The characters had a lot of depth, and overall I think it would translate well into a movie. If I had a second choice, it would be one of my Wilde books. Any one of them would do — I would just LOVE to see one of those Wilde men come to life on the big screen!

JEL: Well, of course, I’d like to see Marisela on the screen most of all. With all the hot Latina actresses running around Hollywood these days (helllllooooo, Jessica Alba?) I’m actually disappointed that there wasn’t any interest. Of my romances, I’d probably like to see PRIVATE LESSONS because it would make a great romantic comedy with a tiny suspense story-line just to keep things hopping. My upcoming Blaze, THE DOMINO EFFECT could be really good, too. A strong plot, great setting, interesting characters. In my opinion, of course!

Now you tell us–which of our books have YOU thought were the most “visual” and best to bring to the screen?

    I thik the Wilde men (and woman) would get jealous if one got to be on the big screen and not the rest.

    I’d like to see a Chandler/Morgan combo

  3. I think the “Hot” series (by CP) or the “Chandler” brothers series. I haven’t read much of the other plotmonkeys’ books, so I can’t comment on that (don’t hate me!).

  5. Katie, we won’t hate you…but there is an easy way to remedy that.

    Thanks, Rachael…I think so, too. Unfortunately, Hollywood has yet to agree.

    If I had to pick Plotmonkey books, I would definitely pick her new book, CROSS MY HEART. I think it has great settings, a fabulous story, an element of intrigue that the screenwriters could use and of course, wonderful characters. For Leslie, I agree with her about KILLING TIME. It would make an awesome flick. Janelle, I’d have to say that as HEAT WAVES was one of my favorite books of yours, I could see it onscreen. But I think it might have an NC-17 rating if done right!

  6. I will have to jump in & agree that the Chandler series would make a good movie, all those hunky men, yum! When I’m reading a book I really enjoy I have a tendency to “cast” the main characters! It would be fabulous if any or all of the Plotmonkeys sold a book for a move!:thumbsup2:
    Have a great Saturday, enjoy the day.

  7. I would have to agree that I would love to see Cross My Heart make it to the screen. It has everything in it. As for the other plot monkeys stories I would not be sure of, but I am starting to remedy that a little at a time……:thumbsup2:

    I sure would love to see the Chandler guys in a movie or three for that matter

    Just finished your new book and loved the Hot series too.

    These two series get my vote for an upcoming movie.

  11. Julie, I am catching up on my plotmonkeys’ books as fast as I can….yikes….you are so funny! I read the NO Nights book, does that count??? I got to thinking today, maybe Leslie’s “She’s Got the Look” (okay, that pecan pie scene is still vivid in my memory) or was it “She Drives Me Crazy”? I read them out of order, so now I am confused! Janelle, I am catching up on your books, slowly, but surely!

  15. I hate that I missed Saturday’s question because it was mine. I wasn’t feeling good so I just stayed on the sofa most of the day Saturday reading.

    I agree with Carly I could see all the single stories of the Chandler/Morgan combined into a miniseries. Because a two hour movie would cut out way too much of the good stuff.:lightbulb:

    Janelle’s Wilde boy’s books are a given. I always imagine Hugh Jackman playing the lead of one of her men. I love Hugh Jackman.:love2:

    So cool Leslie that a reality show concept nearly made it from one of your books.:thumbsup2: You never know. it still might happen.

    You know the best things usually happen when you don’t expect them.

    Julie, you are right Private Lessons would make a great romantic comedy.
    Romantic comedies are my favorite type of movie. There is just so much meanness and sadness in the world that I want to see something that will bring a smile to my face.: As far a a Latina actress I have loved every Romantic comedy JLO did I think she would be good. I loved JA in Fantastic 4 and Never been kissed. Either would be a good choice

    Talking about smiles and laughes. You guys gotta go see Pirates of the Caribbean DMC. I went Friday afternoon it was a sold out showing.
    Screw the critics. I loved it. I didn’t compare it to the first one. You hardly can ever top the first movie of a trilogy (sorta like a book trilogy). But the movie was loads of fun the crowd was laughing out loud at Captain Jack. If you do go watch for Jacks make-up job whe he is god of the cannibals. The make up artist ought to win an award or something. It was hilarious. plus the movie has a few surprises. I won’t tell you,but you need to see the first movie to really enjoy the second installment.

  16. Hi Everyone:
    I have to get my 2 cent’s worth in on this topic.
    I would love to see the Hot Zone novels make it to the screen- they have it all: strong women, hot guys, one in the closet and a crotchety old man and woman who will put up with him!! What more could you want? Just think of all the hot guys they could get to play the various players, and all the skimpy/tight uniforms they would be in. ::sigh::

  17. The bachelor series and the Wilde series were what got me hooked on Carly and Janelle As for the other monkeys, I am also guilty of not following their books as closely(something I put my local used bookstore on alert for):doggie: I will admit I’m a Blaze fan thru and thru…I buy all the books each month…and went to the bookstore to buy all the ones I didnt have(thank goodness they are numbered!!)

  19. I’m love that this question came about!!:thumbsup2: I’ts hard for me to choose because I love all of CP books. But, I can give out an order inwhich I would see them if they were made movies;

    Hot Zone Series:love2::love2::love2::thumbsup2::thumbsup2::love2::love2:

    Chandler Series

    The Costas Sisiters, I think there should be a third book to this series about Samantha goes to college or gets married or something . . . what do you think?::lightbulb::love2::love2::love2::thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

    Brazen:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2::thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

    I’ve read a few more but these are the ones I think would score big on the big screen.
