A Backseat Reviewer
I’m a backseat reviewer, which means I have no business reviewing, but I’m going to do it anyway. No, not other authors’ novels because unless I’m telling you what I enjoy, I really believe in not critiquing another hardworking writer. Instead I am going to discuss my recent viewing pleasure. It’s been very hard for me to get through the summer without my beloved television shows
but somehow I am managing. As a matter of fact, I’ve been finding new things to do with my time. Writing for one. I must finish SEALED WITH A KISS, the sequel to CROSS MY HEART. And movies. I’ve been seeing movies too.
And so I bring to you, Carly’s Backseat Reviews.
5 Carly Hearts - :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2
on’t Miss
4 Carly Hearts - :love2::love2::love2::love2:Catch it on DVD or Reruns but DO catch it
3 Carly Hearts - :love2::love2:It passes time
2 Carly Hearts - :love2::love2:At least it’s noise in the background while I’m working
1 Carly Heart - :love2
on’t even bother with the DVD or Rerun
Broken Carly Heart - :unlove
on’t even turn on the TV
MOVIES - This summer I’ve seen a lot of movies. I usually go with my youngest daughter who is ten and shares my love of happy endings and comedies. I’m the parent other parents hate, who rarely censor a movie except for the most dire reasons.
So without further ado:
Click – starring Adam Sandler and Kate Beckinsale – if you understand this isn’t a typical Adam Sandler comedy and have the tissues ready, and you DON’T bring your ten year old like I did, there’s a poignant and important life lesson here. This movie touched me deeply and gave me a new appreciation for time, as well as dogs and stuffed ducks. Must see.
5 Carly Hearts :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
The Devil Wears Prada – Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway – I hadn’t read the book so thank goodness I couldn’t compare or already have an image of characters in my mind – and I can say I loved, loved, loved this movie. An added treat is Adrian Grenier as Andi’s boyfriend. I didn’t like his character but how can you not like him? (More about him below) Don’t miss and not just because the clothes are awesome. Perfectly acceptable for ten year olds in my house. ![]()
5 Carly Hearts :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
Keeping up with the Steins - I must admit this is, in my opinion, a movie with a cultural, socio-economic, geographically limited viewing audience. That said, I “got it.” And because I just made my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah (Jewish coming of age ceremony about which this movie is about) and because there were so many other things in the story I could relate to, this is another love love love movie. And Jeremy Piven plays an agent type much like his Entourage character, Ari, and anything he’s in rocks. (See below). Unfortunately I can’t recommend it as “just a comedy”. If you have no frame of reference, it isn’t for you. If you can relate in any way …
5 Carly Hearts:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
On my list to see and review:
Nacho Libre - Jack Black and comedy need I say more?
Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - Will Ferrell as a race car driver named Ricky Bobby. Can’t wait!
![]()
READS - I don’t like to critque fellow authors books, although I do like to tell you what I’m reading. Currently I have Susan Donovan’s The Kept Woman in my pocketbook but the truth is, I have a book due and I need to keep my nose to the grindstone – or actually to the computer monitor and keyboard until SEALED WITH A KISS, the sequel to CROSS MY HEART, is finished.
TV – most of you know I am a television junkie and living during the summer without new shows and only reruns is painful at the very least. I’ve managed to pick up some shows that are new to me and I highly recommend them. Others my family watches and I can live without.
ENTOURAGE on HBO
Okay so I never liked Aquaman as a kid and he was my least favorite superhero. So what? With Adrian Grenier starring as Vince Chase who finds success in Hollywood as Aquaman - and who takes his cast of characters, I mean best friends, along with him, it’s a sure fire hit. Not to mention Jeremy Piven is always worth seeing in anything. I haven’t seen the first two seasons but I may have to buy them and have myself a viewing party.
Definitely 5 Carly Hearts
:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
RESCUE ME on FX - I have to admit, I wasn’t sure about this one at first, but it’s grown on me. It’s compelling drama about America’s Firefighters (and who can resist a man in uniform?) … but these guys aren’t just heroes, they are HUMAN which is what makes the show so good. And they know when and how to add the laughs, which gives me a reason to come back each week. Again, I hadn’t seen it last year and we do have the first season on DVD so I may have to catch up. If I can find the time.
4 Carly Hearts :love2::love2::love2::love2:
So You Think You Can Dance - My family likes it. I tolerate it because nothing else is on. If you still love American Idol and all those shows, then this is for you. As for me …
2 Carly Hearts:love2::love2:
Two and a Half Men - I’ve always watched this off and on, more on this summer and it is HYSTERICAL. Charlie Sheen is such a narcissistic guy and he’s hysterical with his uptight brother raising his teenage son.
Five Carly Hearts:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
OK so it sounds like I love almost everything I see on TV or the movies. I don’t. Trust me. It’s just been a really long and drawn out summer and I’m eternally grateful
for the shows I’ve found that I can come back to and the movies I enjoyed.
Thank you for allowing me to express my views and share them with you.
Now please take pity on me … how are YOU surviving the summer without new episodes of shows like Grey’s Anatomy (let’s not discuss how I’ll enjoy it at all without Denny)? What shows can you recommend to a deprived plotmonkey?

Believe it or not, I don’t watch much t.v. so I can’t help you there. I guess I’m spending more of my time reading (and blogging).
I did see Click and liked it more than I thought. Also saw Johnny Depp in the 2nd Pirates movie….yum :love2:

I just got PIRATES 1 and once I see that, I’ll go see the sequel!

Personally my all time favorite TV Show would have to been Friends, which is no longer running. Reruns are on TBS throughout the week. I would give this a five, but the show is no longer on tv, in new episodes. :love2::love2::love2::love2:
The other show that is currently running would be Freddie. It is currently running reruns on Weds. at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. :love2::love2::love2::love2:
I am looking forward to seeing what the show on ABC What about Brian is all about. It aired 5 episodes, but I was too busy fixing my new house and didn’t have cable at the time to watch it.
Another favorite of Mine that is not on during the summer is the Bachelor. The last one in Paris was great, I absolutly loved it. :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
Comment by Mary — July 11, 2006 @ 7:32 am
We started watching 24 this year about 6 episodes in and we were/are hooked. :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2: That being said we have rented the past 4 seasons to watch and catch up. That’s kept us busy but now were done and it won’t come back on until January.
I also watch RockStar MSN with this years group being Super Nova.
The History, Travel, Food, and HGTV channels always.
And then there is NASCAR gotta watch it and I used to hate it.
Movies - Priates II - love Johnny Deep :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
all though after seeing it I can’t wait for the third since they set it up.
Comment by Vicki — July 11, 2006 @ 8:28 am
Carly, I also really like Rescue Me. Haven’t seen it much yet this season, but I heard about the very controversial scene last week–it was discussed all over the internet. Gotta start watching again! That show is so gritty and real, outrageously funny, yet heartbreaking.
I haven’t really been watching much else now that everything is in rerun mode. But you can bet I’m already gearing up for September when Lost, Boston Legal and Grey’s Anatomy come back on! (Those are my 3 faves.)
Comment by Leslie Kelly — July 11, 2006 @ 8:49 am
Hi Carly,
I told you you would love The Devil Wears Prada.:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
And Yes, it is a good idea to watch the first Pirates of the Caribbean before seeing the sequel (or you won’t understand the significance of some of the characters and the storyline).:thumbsup2:
Plus the movie POTCB is 2 and half hours. Be sure and go to the bathroom and limit fluids.
I love Two and a Half Men It is roll on the floor funny for me.
I hate to admit it but I’m hooked on Hell’s Kitchen on FOX.
The chef Gordon Ramsey is something else.
I stumbled on it last summer and enjoyed it is a weird way. It is sorta like a train wreck you just gotta watch.
It comes on Monday nights
i’m watching So YOu THink you Can Dance too. I’m really waiting for Dancing With the Stars to Come back on. but like you said there isn’t much on Thursday night until they Move Grey’s Anatomy to Thursdays this fall (which I’m not crazy about the move. )
I saw the previews for Will Ferrels Bobby Ricky. I don’t know if I have the nerve to see it at a local theatre but I know I’ll have to see it.
I want to see YOU ME and DUPREE. I love Owen Wilson movies. From his days with Jackie Chan in Shang Hi Noon to Last years Wedding Crashers.
You did a great job with you backseat reviewing.
I think backseat reviewers are the best ’cause the don’t get paid to say what they think.:doggie:
Comment by Gigi — July 11, 2006 @ 9:02 am
OOOH! :o
HELL’S KITCHEN - i watched two hours of it last night. I am hooked too!
YOU ME AND DUPREE - a must see for me too!
Comment by Carly — July 11, 2006 @ 9:11 am
I’ve been watching the show Treasure Hunters - it’s really funny cause the smartest people miss the clues, and your like WHAT? How can you miss that? I love solving the treasures and the clues.
Its a great brain teaser.
I also like Falcon Beach - though I consider it slow going. So I’ve dropped off watching that. Other than that…I am planning on watching the Nightmares & Dreamscrapes thing on TNT.
Hugs
Steph

I just got hooked on “Grey’s Anatomy”. Okay, I have only seen three episodes so far (two from the 1st season and 1 from the second). LOVE IT!!!! Why didn’t I watch this show before? I am so dumb. I have to get them on DVD FAST (I am going through major withdrawls!)!

Hubby and I watch “Rockstar” (we choose one reality show to watch together, usually I am watching some one that he hates and vice versa). What’s funny is that he is that he loves music, so he can tell me, “good version, bad version”, I just tell him whether or not they have the “look’. I am just impressed that certain members of SUPERNOVA can make a complete sentence with a complete thought. :thumbsup2:
Loved “Devil Wears Prada”. I read the book when it first came out (too many books in between)…I remember it was really funny and the movie didn’t disappoint! They did a great job of casting!

NASCAR:thumbsup2:
I have The Kept Woman on my TBR list.
Comment by Cherylann — July 11, 2006 @ 10:45 am
Carly,
I totally agree about Hell’s Kitchen, my hubby and I are hooked. I was very upset that SARA AKA B@&*H wasn’t kicked off.
:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2::love2::love2::love2::love2::love2: - 24 no one and I mean no one can come between me and my Jack Bauer, I just heard that there going to make the movie verison of 24 during the season 6 and season 7 hiatus! Yeah
.
I’m reality tv junkie….. My new favorite Beside’s :love2::love2: - DOG the BOUNTY HUNTER ( what’s not to like a man with a mullet and he’s wife with the biggest chest i’ve ever seen) catching bad guys in Hawaii! is :love2::love2::love2::love2: - BRIDEZILLA.
OMG i can’t believe the things that these women say and do. I even have Hubby watching it now.
and to show what a geek I am I found rerun’s of the A-TEAM. There’s something about bad 80’s tv that I love!!!
Comment by TRICIA — July 11, 2006 @ 10:54 am
I don’t watch much TV in the summer when it’s rerun time. I spend the free time reading more books.
The TV is always on in my house though with my husband and my son. They love baseball (Red Sox rule in our house) and we usually watch a game. I can be in the same room with them when they are watching sports and be reading. All other shows I get distracted and start watching.
My son is really into old Seinfeld reruns. He’s seen them all and he has them memorized. He can tell you what it’s about after the first 30 seconds of the show. Amazing! I only hope that he’s that into his schoolwork.

Love, love, love NASCAR! I also love Rockstar Supernova, Dog the Bounty Hunter and Flip This House (my hubby and I are remodeling junkies). Just saw CARS at the movies (I have toddlers, so we can’t do anything right now that’s not animated or filled with special effects), and it was great! Just saw FAILURE TO LAUNCH on DVD. Really cute and funny. Matt is totally hot!!!! Now back to work . . .

anyway i can’t wait until your NASCAR series comes out!!!

My husband is a firefighter and got me hooked on Rescue Me. It’s HOT!
I love Boston Legal but it’s off right now. :cry:
Comment by Jill Vatican — July 11, 2006 @ 12:23 pm
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Rescue Me, and have loved it since it first started. If you ever need cliff notes I can sum it up for you. LOL!!
I also love to watch Big Brother, this season 7 is the All Star season and I was sooooooo MAD that Allison made the cut. I seriously can not stomach her. She just gets my blood boiling. But I love Howie, Jase, Janelle and the others.
Hells Kitchen is also an awesome show. Gordon Ramsey also has another show that I love to watch I think it’s on the Food Network and it’s called something like Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmare. He visits resturaunts all over and finds what things aren’t working and why, weather it is the current menus, waitstaff, managers etc. He tells it like it is on this show too, which is why I love him. My thought is, if you don’t want to hear my HONEST opinion than don’t ask. :P
I hate to admit it but I have been so desperate for TV that I have even watched My Fair Brady!!!
I am a late bloomer for Grey’s Anatomy so I have been watching the reruns to catch up to speed.
I have also caught episodes of Dog the Bounty Hunter, Bridezilla’s (this show is a hoot!)
I am sure there are more, but this is the majority of what I watch. Thank God for TIVO.
Comment by Kelly — July 11, 2006 @ 12:52 pm
I am looking forward to the premiere of Project Runway tomorrow…Can’t wait. There has not been a lot on this summer. I also like the show, The Closer on TNT and recommend it.

I saw Pirates 2 LOVED IT. Thought it was better than the first one.
:love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:
Also, with all the reruns this summer I have been watched Saved on TNT :love2::love2::love2::love2: It’s very likable.
I’ve also been watching Windfall. Love it. It’s my new addiction. Luke Perry and Jason Gedrick could have something to do with that though, but that aside, it’s still a great show. :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:

Kelly,
I am a closet “My Fair Brady’ fan. It’s like watching a ‘train wreck’…not pleasant, but you just can’t turn the channel. Yikes.
I wish we got Bravo so I could see “Project Runway’. I have been told I would like it.
Comment by katie — July 11, 2006 @ 2:55 pm
Sara should have gone for attitude, the other for lack of ability!
And I LOVE HOUSE.
Comment by Carly — July 11, 2006 @ 3:17 pm
I haven’t seen The Devil Wears Prada but can’t wait. Glad to hear a good review on it. I’ve watched some older movies on DVD lately & that has been fun. Hitch, I liked, The In-Laws, okay, funny but a bit over the top!, The Wedding Date, not as funny as I expected but still enjoyed, Meet The Fokkers, very funny, especially Barbra Streisand & Robert DeNiro, great parts they played, The Upside of Anger, okay, more serious another “baseball player” part for Kevin Costner.
TV, I’ve started watching Two & A Half Men & am very impressed with how funny it is. I watched it the first time or 2 out of curiosity but now I’m hooked. I’m watching Grey’s Anatomy now because it was on too late for me when I was working. It is all new to me! I love HGTV, Antiques Roadshow on PBS, I am a die-hard try not to miss Jeopardy fan, even the reruns!! Also been watching CSI: Miami which I like but hate to watch & then go to bed with all the violence following me! It is a good show. Daytime, I love The View! What can I say!
Can’t think of anything else. After reading all the comments here I may try to catch Rescue Me.
It will be nice when the fall season starts, not that I want to rush the summer away!
Comment by Donna M — July 11, 2006 @ 3:27 pm
Summer is all about escapism and wiling away the hours so yeah, in between reading tons of books (which I list monthly on my blog), I’ve spent time watching:
Cartoons with my 3 sons :love2::love2::love2: on the cartoons but :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2: on spending time with them
Hell’s Kitchen :love2::love2::love2: I could do without the profanity but I find the show strangely comical
So You Think You Can Dance :love2::love2::love2::love2: I’m an American Idol fan so I had to get my fix from somewhere
Run’s House and Making the Band 3 on MTV :love2::love2::love2: Ghetto fabulous stuff and takes me back home to NY
Repeats of What Not to Wear :love2::love2::love2: Waiting for a friend to nominate me so I can get a $5,000 new wardrobe!
And I’ve watched the movie Ray on HBO or Cinemax “a million times” according to my son. I’m captivated by it and probably will read his autobiography.
Comment by Patricia — July 11, 2006 @ 4:15 pm
Not much TV in the summer - husband steals remote and it’s mostly the history channel lol. Boston Legal, Grey’s and Survivor are my favorite shows with Two and a Half Men as my favorite comedy with Seinfield as my favorite rerun.
Comment by jeanne — July 11, 2006 @ 5:00 pm
I love Project Runway. Love Heidi Klum. But mostly, I love the clothes…my favorites are always the last show so you can see the whole collection. I never knew how much I enjoy LOOKING at fashion…I just don’t like wearing it! (They don’t exactly make it for my body shape!)
I love America’s Top Model.
I love…believe it or not…The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.
Love Dog, the Bounty Hunter.
I’m catching up on all seasons of Charmed. Can’t believe I didn’t watch this show religiously when it was on.
And I love, love, love SUPERNANNY! Just when I think I’m the worst mother in the world…Jo proves me wrong! There are people who are MUCH worse at parenting than I am and kids who made my daughter look like an angel. Love it!

There will be a very special GUEST BLOGGER TOMORROW! Please make sure you stop by and make her feel welcome!
Comment by Julie Leto — July 11, 2006 @ 5:32 pm
If you’re looking for a good show to get hooked on… Veronica Mars. Undeniably one of the best shows on tv right now. Not many shows can keep the viewers hooked into a full-season mystery and the season finales for both seasons blew many people’s minds with the whodunnit reveals. UPN is showing season 2 in its entirety this summer, so you’ll need to get caught up very quickly or wait til Season 2 comes out on DVD in a month or so. If you are planning on watching the whole thing, DO NOT watch any of season 2 until you’ve seen season 1, or you’ll be totally spoilered. *Grin*

Hey Gigi, the show is actually on BBC America channel at 9:00pm on Wednesday. And the title is Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. I love it!!
Katie, I know what you mean about “My Fair Brady” it is a train wreck. LOL!! I think I first tuned in because I was curious to see how Peter Brady aka Christopher Knight aged. :P And I also had watched the first season of America’s Next Top Model which is where Adrianne Curry got her start. Now I am just watching because I want to see if they REALLY make it to the alter.

I have to say, I’m a bore when it comes to tv…I dont sit and watch alot of different shows. I am a CSI junkie,( but I can catch those on repeats, so I dont have to be in front of the tv while it is on) and I can do Law & Order…any of them…I absolutely hate reality tv shows…I know, I told you I was a bore, but I just can not force myself to sit there and watch the orchestrated “reality”. Now first season of Grey’s Anatomy, I did watch the first few episodes, and a couple since then, but I haven’t a clue whats going on now
With four daughters, we watch an obscene amount of Disney chanel, and animal planet, and abc family.) Food network is a favorite with Rachel Ray…and Paula’s home cooking…other than that, I read:mrgreen:

I’m not much for tv in the summer probably because I don’t get a lot of the shows you are talking about like Rescue Me. Back in Sept. there was about 5 episodes of The Closer on. Tonight the tv was on for an hour to watch Rock Star.

Carly,
I am also definately in DT’s over Grey’s Anatomy. Although, I am really loving the show The Closer w/Kyra Sedgewick (sp?). or maybe I was just lazy that Sunday they had a marathon. Ha Ha Anyway– I usually spend my summer’s reading Romance Novels. :thumbsup2: Really! I have to beacuse I can’t miss the winter shows– The Bachelor, American Idol, Grey’s Anatomy, & Desperate Housewives. However, I find that the Home & Garden Network during the summer gets me interested in projects. Take Care!

We saw Keeping up with the Steins a couple weeks ago, and loved it, too. :love2::love2::love2::love2: We are in the midst of planning my son’s bar mitzvah, so we were in stitches the whole time. My poor hubby, who is not Jewish, was just in shock.
I also love 24 :love2::love2::love2::love2:, but the first season wa definitely the best :love2::love2::love2::love2::love2:

I watch way too much tv, too, and summer rerun season usually makes me nuts. But I love cable’s new trend of starting to air new shows.
I’m big time into USA’s “The Dead Zone” and have to go find the first few seasons on DVD since I just got hooked last year. Love “Psych” and have seen the premiere ep run 4 times this week. “Saved” has caught my eye, too. I recorded this week’s and haven’t had time to go back and watch yet.
ABC is running the first season of “Grey’s Aantomy” so I get to catch up on those and that’s cool. I watch all the “L&O”’s though I don’t get to see SVU much except in rerun since it ran opposite “Nashville Star” (I’m still in major withdrawls from that one) and now ECW’s show. I’m a huge wrestling fan and am so happy there isn’t a season for that, it’s new shows all year long. TNA “Impact” is my favorite show, definitely.

The Closer on Mondays on TNT is good. It has an ecentric cast and interesting stories. My husband and I have been catching up on The Dead Zonestaring Anthony Michael Hall. I have finally accepted that the gangly boy from The Breakfast Club and other Brat Pack movies has grown up.It has a good cast as well. We also like House. I will miss Denny too. I loved the story line on Grey’s Anatomy. Good luck with your deadline.

If you can Tivo or DVR Two and a Half Men, stop it when it gets to the comments at the end. The producer uses it to make his own comments that can by hysterical. I want to go back to everyone of the shows and read them all now that I can. I could never get it to work on the VCR, so I missed a bunch of them.
